2022 Honda Insight problems
The Honda Insight (ホンダ・インサイト, Honda Insaito) is a hybrid electric vehicle that is manufactured and marketed by Honda. Its first generation was a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation was a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2018–2022). It was Honda's first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability — for the length of its production run.
Honda introduced the second-generation Insight in Japan in February 2009 and in the United States on March 24, 2009. The Insight was the least expensive hybrid available in the US. In December 2010, Honda introduced a less expensive base model for the 2011 model year. The Insight was launched in April 2009 in the UK as the lowest priced hybrid on the market and became the best selling hybrid for the month.
The Insight ranked as the top-selling vehicle in Japan for the month of April 2009, a first for a hybrid model. During its first twelve months after first available in the Japanese market, the second-generation Insight sold 143,015 units around the world. In July 2014, Honda announced the end of production of the Insight for the 2015 model, together with the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car and the Honda Fit EV electric car.
At the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Honda announced the third-generation Honda Insight prototype, based on the tenth-generation Honda Civic sedan. Unlike the previous Insight, it was a traditional sedan, not a five-door liftback. The third-generation Insight went on sale later that year.
In April 2022, Honda announced that the Insight would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, with production ending in June. It has been replaced by a new Civic Hybrid.

Common 2022 Honda Insight problems
The 2022 Honda Insight is a hybrid vehicle that has earned a reputation for efficiency and reliability. However, there are some common problems that owners of this car have reported.
One of the most common problems with the 2022 Honda Insight is related to the check engine light. This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including aftermarket items that are not installed correctly, a loose or damaged gas cap, a dead battery, or a faulty O2 sensor.
Another common problem with the 2022 Honda Insight is related to the battery system. This issue has been reported in earlier models of the Honda Insight, particularly in the 2000-2006 models, where it led to unexpected failures and replacements. While there have been no specific reports of battery system problems in the 2022 model, it is still important to be aware of this potential issue.
Transmission problems have also been reported in the 2022 Honda Insight, with some owners experiencing rough shifting or even total transmission failure in severe cases.
The air conditioning system in some model years of the Honda Insight may pose problems, with some owners reporting inadequate cooling or malfunctioning components. This problem has been reported in earlier models of the Honda Insight, but it is still important to be aware of this potential issue in the 2022 model.
Electrical glitches, including problems with power windows and door locks, have been occasional concerns in the Honda Insight. This problem has been reported in earlier models of the Honda Insight, but it is still important to be aware of this potential issue in the 2022 model.
In summary, while the 2022 Honda Insight is generally a reliable and fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle, there are some common problems that owners have reported. These include issues with the check engine light, battery system, transmission, air conditioning system, and electrical glitches. By being aware of these potential issues, Honda Insight owners can take steps to prevent or address them, ensuring that their vehicle remains safe and reliable for years to come.
What is the common problem Honda Insight?
Problem: It is common on the Honda Insight for the fuel cap release switch to fail. The fuel cap release switch is located at the right hand side of the drivers side footwell and the problem is caused by corrosion, or failure of the release spring.
Is the Honda Insight a reliable car?
The probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 16% for the Honda Insight, compared to an average of 9% for alternative fuel vehicles and 12% for all vehicle models. The average total annual cost for unscheduled repairs and maintenance across all model years of a vehicle.
Why Honda Insight is not selling?
Fuel Economy
However, subsequent design changes to the model (including adding more seats) decreased the MPG, thus allowing the Prius to usurp it in terms of sales. The Insight never recovered, and earlier this month, Honda dealers announced they would no longer be ordering more Insights for their lots.
Why did Honda stop making the Honda Insight?
The End of a Classic Hybrid
Although the current Honda Insight is a 10th-generation Civic with styling tweaks and a hybrid powertrain, Honda wants to focus on using core models to increase hybrid volume. To further this goal, the company has announced that it will be investing in new, more efficient hybrid technology.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
- VIN: 19XZE4F5XNE
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Engine will start shaking and making a helicopter sound while idling or driving under 45. Check engine light will begin to blink. While on the interstate, engine began to shake loudly making helicopter sound. Then it began to decelerate from 75 to 40 ON THE INTERSTATE before stalling out completely. I had to coast it into the pull off lane to avoid being hit. Spark plugs were replaced, but issue continues. Mechanic said it sounds like a fuel pump issue when I recorded it on video. When we restarted the car, engine light was not on so error codes could not be read.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- VIN: 19XZE4F53NE
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving the vehicle around 6:55PM at approximately 40 MPH while exiting the highway the Emergency breaking system fully engaged for no reason. There were no obstructions in the roadway, the vehicle was on center in the roadway and there were no vehicles in front when the braking occurred. After slowing the vehicle under full emergency braking to around 15 MPH the system stopped breaking and returned to normal. There were no warning lights, or system lights that activated before, during or after the emergency breaking. The lane departure warning visual indicator appeared on the dash, but the road departure mitigation indicator did not. This also occurred when the vehicle was a significant distance away from any solid lines in the roadway as the exit lane is oversized where the incident occurred. The incident caused a trailing vehicle to take evasive action and swerve onto the shoulder to avoid a crash.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-13
- VIN: 19XZE4F95NE
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Approximately 29-30 months after purchase multiple panels of the car are peeling with paint. Small knicks continue to bubble and get larger. Honda is not covering this problem because the milage is past 36,000 but this is clearly a manufacturing defect; the dealership did fix two panels for us (photos starting with a 1 and 2) free of charge but will not cover a third repair (photos starting with a 3). I think this vehicle is defective and should be completely repainted or exchanged.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-10

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-16
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 19XZE4F57NE
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I have filed a complaint to the Honda Motor Company in Torrence, California. I have notifed Honda of a serious defect with our vehicles Collision Mitiagation Braking System. Here are the defects with our Honda Insight 2022 vehicle: 1) On three occasions while my wife Nino is driving on the 470 freeway in Colorado between Lone Tree and Littleton CO. Brake warning light comes on, light comes on randomly while driving 65 mph, then the Collision Mitiagation braking system comes on and slows the vehicle down to 15 mph while on the Freeway speed of 65 mph. While the brakes are engaging a forceful vacuum and pressure enters the cabin and that pressure goes to my wife's chest which casues pain. 2) 4th event was on August 15, 2023 while driving south on Kipling Ave in Littleton CO. My wife Nino was driving home appx 6:00 pm at 45-50 mph, when the vehicle did the same thing again, brake warning light displays orange yellow color, then the brakes engage to slow the vehicle down, then pressure and vacuum inside the cabin occurs with pressure towards my wife's chest. I have sent a letter yesterday to the Honda Motor Company. I would like to kindly request that you do an investigation into this matter. This defect on our vehicle is a life and dealth situation defect. My wife has been extremely lucky that no collision occured as a result of these horrible experiences. If the Honda Motor comany has not required a recall, then they should be doing this ASAP to prevent unecessary accidents to prevent citizens from dying. Our vehicle was towed on August 16, 2023 to Kuni Honda in Centennial CO. So far, the service manager said they have not been able to find the problem, but then he changed his story and said something needed to be adjusted 2-3 degrees. I requested more detailed information. I called yesterday to request the tow record and service repair records and they have not provided that info to me yet. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-05
- VIN: 19XZE4F50NE
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Experiencing a dead or faulty battery issue in my 2022 Honda Insight. I called the Honda dealership to see if I could charge the battery from the points noted in the owners manual. The service representative said yes. Charged the battery to 100% and proceeded directly to the dealership for service. During the drive to the dealership I experienced the dashboard lights and annunciation display with errors. TPMS, electric steering, brakes, traction control, and to see my dealer. “On my way”… During the repair process and extended waiting period of about 2 hours. It was initially determined the steering wheel was “not centered”, cocked to the left, and would need a wheel alignment. How much is that $179. You must have hit a curb or something. No I did not, and would seek a second opinion first before I allowed that service. Let’s fix the battery and dashboard light error lights first. Proceeding the battery was determined faulty, testing at 95 CCA and would be replaced under warranty. But, upon test driving the car it was still having a traction control skid type light coming on and off, and a diagnostic fee of $158 may be required. I said, shouldn’t that be an issue related to the battery going bad and causing or the cause of the traction control light? We’ll have to see, he said. I asked to speak to the manager and decided I was at tge mercy of the dealership to find a resolve and authorized service. Upon researching on the internet, during my waiting period for the battery change, I learned their is a “steering angle sensor” located under the steering wheel that my need recalibration to resolve the offset steering wheel observation of the service representative. The cause of this need for recalibration may be because of a collision, remove/replacement of a battery. The recalibration requires a special diagnostic electronic device to interface with the cars computer(s). The receipt for service said “calibrated system”.
STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-16
- VIN: 19XZE4F97NE
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: On 2/16/23 I was driving on the highway when I heard a loud pop/bang like an explosion or loud crash on the top of my car. There were barely any cars around, no trucks spewing debris, I wasn’t going under an overpass, and I didn’t see anything fly up from the road. I had a passenger in the car who was looking out the windows at the road and didn’t see anything either. I opened the covering for the moon roof to see if something was stuck to the roof and my moon roof had exploded for no reason. Shattered glass fell into my car. My safety and the safety of others was at risk because I was in shock by what happened and it startled me while I was driving. Also, my car is not drive-able until this is fixed and it is through no fault of my own (or anyone else’s beyond the manufacturer). I took the car to a collision center to have the damage assessed for my insurance company. It is isolated to the moon roof, nothing else was damaged. It will be looked at by the dealership on Monday 2/20/23. There were no warning lights or other symptoms of failure prior to the explosion. The moon roof wasn’t cracked or chipped, not compromised in any way. The car is brand new, I bought it new in June 2022.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-19
- VIN: 19XZE4F56NE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My car was parked safely on my driveway. I turn on the car and all the lights came on including power loss failure, collision mitigation, etc. I had to tow it to a dealer where they claimed it was rodent damage causing an electrical failure on Monday, 9/19/22. The car was towed on 9/20/22. I was then told I was unable to claim any warranty. The dealer charged me $640.00 for the repair. They claim the wire harness was chewed on which caused the system failure. I ended up having to pay out of pocket instead of using my $500 insurance to cover the damages. (Insurance said it would likely raise my rates next if I continuously put a claim). I thought--one time incident, bad luck. The dealership refused to take photos of the chewed wires, but I was able to fight to receive some parts indicating the damage (who knows if it was actually mine or some they kept off of some other Honda--see attached photo). Not even 24 hours after having my car repaired to normal, I turn on the car in the morning and the same issues came up. I towed it again! The dealership claimed the rodent chewed my car in the same spot, at the same area. Charged me an additional $224.00 to solder it back citing that they never seen this happen before. I find it convenient that no other vehicles on this street had issues with rodent damage. And the same area was bitten twice. Why would Honda create such an easily accessible route for rodents or a non-covered protected wire? As a consumer, I end up fronting the bill because neither the manufacturer nor the dealership, nor the insurance company (who would likely end up raising my rates) have to deal with a terrible design. Never had issues with other brands nor other older vehicles had this issue in the cul-de-sac. Dealership ended up having wrapping the harness, but this car is NEW & should have been protected and repaired by Honda to begin with. Online search revealed Honda used SOY BASED insulation which attracts rodents. Very unsatisfied with Honda.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-19
- VIN: 19XZE4F91NE
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Twice, this car has engaged emergency brakes with cars behind me and no cars in front of me. Several other times, the "Brake now" indicator has come on with no cars nearby.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-25
- VIN: 19xze4f53ne
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Driving the vehicle between 60 and 65 MPH on a straight 4 lane divided highway with no oncoming traffic and no obstacles in the road, the emergency braking system triggered the audible and visual warnings and engaged emergency braking in the middle of the highway. There were no vehicles in front of the vehicle, there were no road hazards and the roadway was straight. Other vehicles needed to take evasive action to avoid a collision during the unnecessary braking and while regaining speed after the system deactivated. The vehicle has been inspected and no fault codes were found. This is the second occurrence of the issue. The manufacturer was notified after the first instance and was inspected at a Honda dealer. No action to repair or troubleshoot the issue has been taken by Honda following the first reported issue.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-05
- VIN: 19xze4f53ne
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving 45 mph on a straight 4 lane undivided road with no cars in front of me or in the oncoming lanes. I was maintaining speed and the vehicle engaged the emergency braking system. The visual and audible alerts went off and with extreme braking force slowed the vehicle down to 10 mph with no obsticles in the roadway. There were no road hazards that would necessitate the system to engage. The trailing vehicles, at highway speed, had to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid rear ending me and I was unable to override the system to maintain speed. I've taken the vehicle to a Honda dealer and they were unable to find any fault codes in the system.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-11
- VIN: 19xze4f55ne
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving down the freeway, around 4pm there wasn't much traffic and the nearest vehicle in front of me was abour 100 meters ahead of me when my 2022 Honda Insight activated the automatic emergency brakes and slowed down for about a second before dis-activating them. Since the vehicle ahead of me was not close at all, there should have been no reason for the automatic brakes to activate. I was lucky there was little traffic at the time and no car was immediately behind me as that could have caused a great accident.
STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-07
- VIN: 19XZE4F54NE
- Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Honda Insight. The contact stated while driving approximately 60-75 MPH, the front end of the hood raised up. The contact continued to drive at a slower speed. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving at high speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that there was no service bulletin associated with the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-04
- VIN: 19XZE4F58NE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: It had problems with this car in the first 500 miles on Oct 31st 2021 while driving on Long Island Expressway in Nassau County, NY. I have proof. I took pictures of the dashboard while getting lots of error codes while driving and only had 500 miles on the car. I experience loss of power, loss of steering and brake failure while driving on the Long Island Expressway. I was lucky to be near an exit and I let the car roll away through the exit and I was able to pull over to the side of the service road of LIE. After an hour the car started. I didn't know then, but this car has had chewed up wires ever since I picked it up from the dealership in Pennsylvania( Honda Vinart of Emmaus, PA ). I observed exposed wires when I changed oil for the first time in December 2021. At that time, I thought it is a hybrid thing and didn't think much about it. I was driving with exposed wires this entire time! I could had had the brakes lock up or lose complete power while driving on the highway and cause a major accident. You can try to deflect he blame away from Honda manufacturer, but we all know it is your fault. On March 4th 2022, the Honda Insight barely started , engine knocking and sputtering. I towed it to the Staten Island Honda service (which estimated the damage at $7000 , but the warranty doesn't cover ) and they told me that a rodent finished the job Sunday night. The soy based harness on my 2022 Honda Insight attracts rodents. Why didn't the rodents attack my wife car that is parked right next to mine in the same driveway? I never had this type of problem with the other cars I owned in the past. I had owned dozens of cars and left them months parked in my driveway and they never attracted any rodents. This is a warranty issue and a safety issue . I could have been killed while driving with exposed wires. How do I even know, that other wires are also chewed? Can I trust this car to be reliable anymore? A $30,000 car that can be my death trap.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-13
- VIN: 19XZE4F94NE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Throughout short ownership of the vehicle, a "Charing System Problem" warning light has occurred when starting, and during operation, of the vehicle. The warning light occurs intermittently during start-ups and whilst driving. The warning light possibly indicates an error with the charging system of the vehicle that may potentially result in loss/reduction of power of the vehicle. This may result in an increase of a vehicle collision. The vehicle is currently under inspection by Honda of Oakland, and the service department states they cannot properly reproduce/identify/diagnose the issue at this time. See attachment for photo of first occurrence. Additional occurrences are documented via video and may be provided upon request.

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share some exciting news about my car. It turns out that my car is actually exceeding the EPA's MPG estimates! I've been averaging mid to high 50's with my average commute, and even when I drove over the mountains and back during a holiday weekend, I still came back with 53MPG. I even confirmed that the trip computer was correct during my latest refill. I'm so happy with my car's performance!
-
Love this car in every aspect. It's comfortable, economical, and fun to drive. I average 54 miles a gallon and I challenge myself to see if I can get better mileage every trip. The build quality is great and there are lots of neat gadgets. Overall, I give it an A++!
-
Fit, form and function! The complete package (touring model) includes the highest quality for the money available. It's a shame that they're so hard to find in radiant red with ivory leather.

This is a fantastic vehicle all around. As someone who has owned two newer BMW 3-Series over the past 6 years (320 xDrive and 330 xDrive) plus a 2022 Toyota Corolla LE, I can confidently say that the Insight Touring definitely leans more toward the Bimmers but with far superior fuel economy. The handling is firm and stable, and the ride quality is excellent. While the acceleration is more than adequate for a hybrid, it's not nearly as exhilarating as a 3-series. However, the fit and finish are very, very good, and the interior materials are well above par. Although some people may get annoyed by the low speed alien spacecraft hum, I personally think it's pretty cool. The headroom is only adequate, and at 6’1” I can fit okay, but anyone over 6’2” might be touching the headliner front or rear. The fuel economy has been great so far - initially a bit below advertised (was getting right around 43-45 mpg), but since that 1,000 mile break-in, I’ve been achieving 50-53 mpg per fill up with an equal mix of city/freeway driving. Overall, this is a winner from Honda that seems to be overlooked by a lot of folks for some reason. I had to wait a couple of months before taking possession due to the inventory shortage, but it was more than worth the wait.
-
This car is a great option if you're concerned about gas mileage.

The car seems to have trouble staying in the lane when going around curves, even with the switches turned off. It's not my favorite vehicle, but perhaps it's just this particular one. It wouldn't be my first choice for a car.
Elliott Nitzsche 2024-03-20
My wife and I test drove a Honda Insight just last week. Unfortunately, we found that the front seats were not very roomy. As a tall person at six-two, I struggled to find enough leg room even with the seat all the way back and the height as far as it would go. Similarly, my wife, who is five-three, found that the seat did not rise high enough and she would need a pillow to see comfortably. The front passenger seat has no height adjustment and is barely high enough for me, while my wife felt like a toddler in that seat. We were both surprised by the lack of ergonomic design in the front seats. On the other hand, the CVT was fairly quiet and the car drove well with good pickup. However, the paddle shifters were a bit of a distraction. Although their purpose is to adjust the strength of regenerative braking, we found that we needed to fiddle with them constantly since the system automatically reverts back to factory default (weakest regen) whenever you touch either pedal, gas or brake. This was an unnecessary distraction. We would much rather have a system like Tesla's where the setting stays put until you decide otherwise.

There is a convenient ‘brake hold’ system. However, if you take off your seatbelt, it switches to parking break and requires you to release it in order to drive again, even if you have already put the seatbelt back on.
