Honda Insight problems
The Honda Insight (ホンダ・インサイト, Honda Insaito) is a hybrid electric vehicle that is manufactured and marketed by Honda. Its first generation was a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation was a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2018–2022). It was Honda's first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability — for the length of its production run.
Honda introduced the second-generation Insight in Japan in February 2009 and in the United States on March 24, 2009. The Insight was the least expensive hybrid available in the US. In December 2010, Honda introduced a less expensive base model for the 2011 model year. The Insight was launched in April 2009 in the UK as the lowest priced hybrid on the market and became the best selling hybrid for the month.
The Insight ranked as the top-selling vehicle in Japan for the month of April 2009, a first for a hybrid model. During its first twelve months after first available in the Japanese market, the second-generation Insight sold 143,015 units around the world. In July 2014, Honda announced the end of production of the Insight for the 2015 model, together with the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car and the Honda Fit EV electric car.
At the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Honda announced the third-generation Honda Insight prototype, based on the tenth-generation Honda Civic sedan. Unlike the previous Insight, it was a traditional sedan, not a five-door liftback. The third-generation Insight went on sale later that year.
In April 2022, Honda announced that the Insight would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, with production ending in June. It has been replaced by a new Civic Hybrid.

Common Honda Insight problems
The Honda Insight, a pioneering hybrid vehicle, has been praised for its fuel efficiency and reliability. However, certain model years have been associated with specific problems. Here are some common issues reported by owners:
- Air Conditioning System: Some model years, such as certain 2010-2014 models, have reported problems with the air conditioning system, including inadequate cooling or malfunctioning components.
- Electrical Glitches: Occasional concerns have been reported with power windows and door locks in various model years.
- Excessive Noise: The first-generation Insights (1999-2006) were known for engine noise, which was a part of the vehicle. However, some drivers reported changes in engine noise, which could indicate a problem that should be checked by a mechanic.
- Autostop Feature: The Insight's "Autostop" feature, which shuts down the engine while idling to save fuel, sometimes fails to restart the engine when needed. This issue is often linked to the hybrid battery, but there can be other reasons as well.
- Transmission Problems: The 2012 model, in particular, has been associated with transmission issues, including rough shifting and total transmission failure in severe cases.
- Brakes Issues: The 2012 Insight has been reported to have brakes issues, which should be addressed immediately by a mechanic.
- Engine Problems: Excessive oil consumption and engine failure have been reported in the 2012 and 2013 models, with the engine jerking while accelerating and stalling while driving.
- Spark Plugs: Occasional problems with spark plugs wearing out and even melting have been reported in some models, which can cause stalling and increased fuel consumption.
When considering a used Honda Insight, it's crucial to be aware of these potential issues and conduct thorough inspections. Consulting with a knowledgeable mechanic familiar with the Insight's unique hybrid system can provide further peace of mind.
Are Honda Insights reliable cars?
Overall, the Insight is little more than a commuter runabout. Hybrid battery failures are fairly common. Production for this generation lasted until 2006. These 5-year-old models are reasonably priced and reliable, and deliver class-leading mileage.
Why did Honda Insight fail?
Battery Problems
Batteries in hybrid cars are tricky things to begin with, because they don't operate quite the same way as those in gas-powered vehicles. But the Insight (as well as other Honda hybrids like the Civic) tends to run through its battery quite quickly, sometimes within a matter of only six or eight years.
How many miles will a Honda Insight last?
You can expect a standard Honda Insight to last around 150,000-200,000 miles. The effort you put into the machine will make a big difference in how long it survives but also keep an eye out for rust, corrosion, and potholes on the road. With care, the Honda Insight will survive longer than expected.
Why is Honda discontinuing The Insight?
Late in its production run, the Insight certainly was a slow seller in the Honda portfolio. From 2018 to 2021, Honda moved a mere 70,000 Insights. Those numbers pale in comparison to Honda's much more notable Civic nameplate.

- Summary: Vehicle a/c system did not effectively cool cabin in warm weather on long drives. Last trip there were white particles coming from the vents. There is a known issue with the systems and Honda extended the warranty on a/c system due to problem condensors. Brought it to a dealer who found that the evaporator was leaking causing refrigerant to enter cabin area. Dealer quoted over $1500 to replace a part that was defective from the factory. Vehicle is out of bumper to bumper warranty and Honda has refused to cover the repairs.

- VIN: 19XZE4F5XNE
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Engine will start shaking and making a helicopter sound while idling or driving under 45. Check engine light will begin to blink. While on the interstate, engine began to shake loudly making helicopter sound. Then it began to decelerate from 75 to 40 ON THE INTERSTATE before stalling out completely. I had to coast it into the pull off lane to avoid being hit. Spark plugs were replaced, but issue continues. Mechanic said it sounds like a fuel pump issue when I recorded it on video. When we restarted the car, engine light was not on so error codes could not be read.

- VIN: 19XZE4F51KE
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: While driving on or around September 4th, 2024, a warning light appeared on my dashboard. The warning stated “Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Problem. See Your Dealer.” I took my car to Hare Honda for an inspection and service on September 18th, 2024, and was informed that the diagnostic process would need the car to be in the shop overnight. I rescheduled my diagnostic service for September 26, 2024. On the 26th, I received a notification regarding the diagnostic test and the warning turned out to be an internal issue with the Air Bag Control Module and it needed to be replaced. The cost for this replacement was quoted at $1,353.91. I tried searching for any recalls for my vehicle and could not find any active ones. I dug a little deeper and found out that Honda has a safety recall for the same SRS issue regarding the module used to deploy airbags. The NHTSA recall number is 18V664000 and the Honda recall numbers are B2R, C2P, and Z2Q. I tried searching for a place to claim that my car should be part of a recall that is no longer active, but I could not find a place to submit a claim for it until I found the reporting tool for the NHTSA. Any assistance would be appreciated, especially because this seems to be part of the same part that had a recall in the past and I was not notified. Looking forward to hearing from anyone! I will likely have to approve the service because I am using my car for an extended road journey on October 3rd. 2024.

- Summary: I am urging your immediate attention to a safety issue affecting the 2021 Honda Insight. The vehicle’s infotainment system, which controls key safety features including the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), has failed. This malfunction prevents drivers from monitoring tire pressures, applying necessary software updates, and accessing navigation and hands-free features, which significantly increases the risk of accidents. The system's failure distracts drivers and compromises critical vehicle safety functions, warranting an urgent recall investigation. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
- VIN: 19XZE4F53NE
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving the vehicle around 6:55PM at approximately 40 MPH while exiting the highway the Emergency breaking system fully engaged for no reason. There were no obstructions in the roadway, the vehicle was on center in the roadway and there were no vehicles in front when the braking occurred. After slowing the vehicle under full emergency braking to around 15 MPH the system stopped breaking and returned to normal. There were no warning lights, or system lights that activated before, during or after the emergency breaking. The lane departure warning visual indicator appeared on the dash, but the road departure mitigation indicator did not. This also occurred when the vehicle was a significant distance away from any solid lines in the roadway as the exit lane is oversized where the incident occurred. The incident caused a trailing vehicle to take evasive action and swerve onto the shoulder to avoid a crash.

- Summary: I received the "important safety recall" letter in March 2024 from the Honda Automobile Division regarding the seat weight sensor circuit board. The letter said that in a crash, the airbags could deploy in a dangerous fashion. I have called my Honda dealer three times since that date. Today, Sept. 10, 2024, I was told again that the dealer did not have the parts to perform the repair, and that it had no idea when it would receive them. I called the national Honda number. Same answer. I called 888-327-4236 to see if NHTSA had more information, held on the phone, then provided my number for a call back. When the NHTSA returned the call, the line was choppy. Either the call dropped, or she hung up on me. She did not call back. I have waited patiently for five months. Neither NHTSA nor my local Honda dealer is able or willing to tell me when this safety issue will be resolved. What is the problem and what is NHTSA doing about it?

- Summary: Approximately 29-30 months after purchase multiple panels of the car are peeling with paint. Small knicks continue to bubble and get larger. Honda is not covering this problem because the milage is past 36,000 but this is clearly a manufacturing defect; the dealership did fix two panels for us (photos starting with a 1 and 2) free of charge but will not cover a third repair (photos starting with a 3). I think this vehicle is defective and should be completely repainted or exchanged.

- Date Complaint: 2024-07-24
- VIN: 19XZE4F56KE

- Summary: I am writing to report a potentially serious safety issue with my vehicle. My car recently had its fuel pump replaced/repaired as part of a recall. However, only about 2 years after this recall repair, my car stopped accelerating while I was driving. This left me and my toddler stranded in the middle of the road in 110 degrees, creating a dangerous situation for us and other drivers. I took the vehicle to the dealership, where they diagnosed that the fuel pump needs to be replaced again. This is concerning as fuel pumps are typically expected to last up to 100,000 miles, and mine was just recently replaced/repaired due to the recall. This incident has caused significant hardship: It put my child and me in a potentially dangerous roadside situation. I lost a day's wages due to being unable to get to work. I am now faced with paying for over a thousand dollars of repairs, as I have no other option. I need my vehicle to get to work and transport my child. I am concerned that there may be a persistent issue with the fuel pumps in this vehicle model, or that the recall repair was not performed adequately. My Honda Service Consultant mentioned that there was a Honda bulletin letting them know of this sort of problem in cars that my make/model/year falls under and beckoned to another car with seemingly the same issue. This leaves me wondering why a, to all intents and purposes, common issue is a bulletin for instead of a recall. I request that the NHTSA investigate this matter to ensure the safety of other drivers who may have had the same recall repair. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car so much! The only issue you mentioned is that it can get a bit loud during hard acceleration, but other than that, it sounds like you're really happy with it. It's great to hear that you're getting such good gas mileage too - over 51 miles per gallon is really impressive! With that kind of fuel efficiency, you can drive from Detroit to Atlanta on less than $35.00 - amazing! It's also good to hear that you find the car spacious and reliable. It sounds like you got a great deal on it, and I hope it continues to serve you well in the future. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I have the Touring model. I traded in my other car as I needed better mileage. It takes a bit of getting used to when using the Eco mode, but the Sport mode is great - much better than expected. Overall, I got 43 mpg through the first tank, which is impressive considering the small 10-gallon tank. The interior is packed with features. Although I experienced some quirks when connecting through Apple Play, I'm sure the kinks will be worked out. Overall, the car is solid, fun to drive, phenomenal on gas, and has a great interior. You'll be happy with your purchase!

This sounds like an amazing car! You've been able to get an average of 43 mpg, which is fantastic. It's great to hear that you've been a loyal Honda customer since 9/1979 and have owned several models, including 3 Civics, 2 Insights, and 1 CRX. Your current Insight seems to be the best one yet, and I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it so much!

Good gas mileage. Although, I must say that the safety features are not up to the mark as compared to other cars I have owned. In case of even a little snow or rain, everything shuts down which can be quite frustrating. The time when you need the safety features the most is when you cannot depend on them. Additionally, the car sits quite low and there is a shield under the engine that keeps coming down. Honda has repaired it 4 times now and I do not have much confidence in their work.

I purchased the car brand new in 2013 and initially enjoyed it quite a bit. It handles well, has some great features (I had the EX with Navigation), and gets really good mileage. However, around 50K miles, I started experiencing warning lights, the car would act strangely, and it used a lot of oil. After getting a diagnosis from my trusted indie car repair guy (who I trust way more than the dealer), I found out that this model has piston issues and may require some expensive repairs. I then discovered from Honda that my warranty had been extended for 8 years, but unfortunately, I was one month outside of the warranty period. My dealer was not helpful either. So, thank you, Honda. Over the past 30 years, I have owned 6 different models, but unfortunately, we are done. If you are looking for a used hybrid, I would not recommend this car.

I really enjoyed the test drive, although I wish I had spent more time on it. Unfortunately, I realized that the car wasn't the right fit for me as soon as I got on the highway after leaving the dealership. I noticed a few issues right away, such as road noise, a bumpy ride, and poor passing power. After driving it for a few days on my daily commute, I started experiencing some pretty bad headaches. This was the final straw that led me to sell the car. I suspect that the hybrid motor and wires running through the cabin may have had something to do with it. I've decided to hold off on buying another hybrid until more studies are done on this issue. Unfortunately, I did end up losing $7k when I sold it back just two months later.

If you're considering buying an early made Insight, it's worth noting that it may have a higher oil consumption than you're used to. Unfortunately, your dealership may not recognize this as an issue, as Honda has deemed it acceptable for engines to consume up to 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. It's important to keep in mind that this car requires less oil than most, with a capacity of only 2.9 or 3.4 quarts. In my experience, my car loses around .75 of a quart, which means I have only 1.15 quarts left at 3000 miles and less than 0 at 5000 miles. While Honda may not consider this a problem, it's something to keep in mind when making your decision. With that said, I would recommend considering other vehicle options.

I really enjoyed the test drive, although I wish I had spent more time on it. Unfortunately, I realized that the car wasn't the right fit for me as soon as I got on the highway after leaving the dealership. I noticed a few issues right away, such as road noise, a bumpy ride, and poor acceleration. After driving it for a few days on my daily commute, I started experiencing some pretty bad headaches. This was the final straw that led me to sell the car. I suspect that the hybrid motor and wires running through the cabin may have had something to do with it. I've decided to hold off on buying another hybrid until more research is done on this issue. Unfortunately, I did end up losing $7k when I sold it back just two months later.
