2000 Honda Insight problems
The Honda Insight (ホンダ・インサイト, Honda Insaito) is a hybrid electric vehicle that is manufactured and marketed by Honda. Its first generation was a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation was a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2018–2022). It was Honda's first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability — for the length of its production run.
Honda introduced the second-generation Insight in Japan in February 2009 and in the United States on March 24, 2009. The Insight was the least expensive hybrid available in the US. In December 2010, Honda introduced a less expensive base model for the 2011 model year. The Insight was launched in April 2009 in the UK as the lowest priced hybrid on the market and became the best selling hybrid for the month.
The Insight ranked as the top-selling vehicle in Japan for the month of April 2009, a first for a hybrid model. During its first twelve months after first available in the Japanese market, the second-generation Insight sold 143,015 units around the world. In July 2014, Honda announced the end of production of the Insight for the 2015 model, together with the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car and the Honda Fit EV electric car.
At the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Honda announced the third-generation Honda Insight prototype, based on the tenth-generation Honda Civic sedan. Unlike the previous Insight, it was a traditional sedan, not a five-door liftback. The third-generation Insight went on sale later that year.
In April 2022, Honda announced that the Insight would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, with production ending in June. It has been replaced by a new Civic Hybrid.

Common 2000 Honda Insight problems
The Honda Insight, introduced in 1999, is known for its fuel efficiency and innovative hybrid technology. However, as with any vehicle, there are common issues that owners have reported over the years.
- Drivetrain-to-Chassis Ground Straps Corrosion: The drivetrain-to-chassis ground straps can corrode over time, leading to drivability issues and potential electrical problems. Regular inspection and maintenance of these ground straps can help prevent this issue.
- Manual Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the manual transmission, including difficulty shifting and clutch problems. These issues may be more prevalent in higher mileage vehicles and can potentially lead to more significant repairs.
- CVT Judder: Some Insight models, particularly those with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), may experience a shuddering or juddering sensation during acceleration. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including transmission fluid condition and wear.
- Missing Original Equipment: Some Insight owners have reported issues with missing original equipment, such as low rolling resistance (LRR) tires and aerodynamic underbody panels. These components can significantly impact the vehicle's fuel efficiency and should be replaced if missing or worn out.
- Corroded Fuel/Brake Lines: Over time, fuel and brake lines can corrode, leading to leaks and potential safety hazards. Regular inspection and maintenance can help prevent this issue.
- Cracked Engine Mount: The engine mount, which secures the engine to the vehicle's chassis, can crack over time, leading to excessive vibration and noise. This issue can be more prevalent in higher mileage vehicles and may require replacement of the engine mount.
- Rear Shock Absorbers: The rear shock absorbers, which help to dampen the vehicle's suspension, can wear out over time, leading to a less comfortable ride and potential handling issues. Regular inspection and maintenance can help prevent this issue.
While these issues can be concerning, many Insight owners have reported high levels of satisfaction with the vehicle's fuel efficiency, reliability, and overall driving experience. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.
What is the common problem Honda Insight?
Problem: It is common on the Honda Insight for the fuel cap release switch to fail. The fuel cap release switch is located at the right hand side of the drivers side footwell and the problem is caused by corrosion, or failure of the release spring.
Why did the Honda Insight fail?
Blame fuel economy, battery problems or company indecision — at the end of the day, Honda failed to give consumers a lasting reason to stick with its Insight model.
Is the Honda Insight a reliable car?
The probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 16% for the Honda Insight, compared to an average of 9% for alternative fuel vehicles and 12% for all vehicle models. The average total annual cost for unscheduled repairs and maintenance across all model years of a vehicle.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-07-27
- VIN: JHMZE1376YT
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: HONDA INSIGHT 2000 LOW BEAM LIGHTS FAILED WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH. A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT HONDA IS REFUSING TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIR BECAUSE MY VIN DID NOT SHOW A RECALL. THE HONDA INSIGHT 2000 IS LISTED FOR THIS RECALL. I HAVE OWNED MANY HONDAS IN THE PAST, BUT NOW AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN HONDA'S CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WILL NOT BE PURCHASING ANY HONDA PRODUCTS IN THE FUTURE.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-03-21
- VIN: JHMZE1374YT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: THE HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE 2000 INSIGHT. FIRST, I NOTICED A BURNING SMELL. I PULLED OVER AND CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD BUT FOUND NOTHING. I GOT BACK IN AND THE SMELL CAME BACK AS I STARTED DRIVING. A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE HEADLIGHTS GOT DIM FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN WENT OUT. I STOPPED THE CAR. THE BURNING SMELL WAS COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE STEERING WHEEL, WHERE THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH IS. I TRIED THE HIGH BEAM AND IT WORKED. I DROVE THE REST OF THE WAY WITH HIGH BEAMS ON. I CHECKED WITH HONDA AND THEY SAID THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM ON THE INSIGHT, BUT THEIR RECORDS SHOWED A REPAIR HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE, SO THEY WOULD CHARGE ME TO REPAIR IT AGAIN. I THINK THE REPAIR IN THE RECALL MAY FIX THE PROBLEM FOR A WHILE BUT DOES NOT PREVENT THE PROBLEM FROM OCCURRING AGAIN. OR THEY DIDN'T DO THE RECALL PROCEDURE PROPERLY. HONDA NEEDS TO FIX THIS. IT IS DANGEROUS AND THEY SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IT. *TR
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA INSIGHT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH WITH THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS IN OPERATION, THE HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS WERE ACTIVATED IN ORDER TO CONTINUE DRIVING. THERE WAS A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V086000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS); HOWEVER THE CONTACT'S VIN WAS INELIGIBLE FOR REPAIRS UNDER THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 178,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-01-13
- VIN: JHMZE1355YT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: THE "DIM" HEADLIGHTS ON MY HONDA INSIGHT WENT OUT. THE "BRIGHTS" STILL WORK BUT NO DIMS. I CHECKED ON LINE AND THERE IS A RECALL FOR MY CAR FOR A FAULTY DIM SWITCH THAT WILL MAKE THE DIMS GO OUT. WHEN I CALLED A DEALER AND GAVE HIM MY VIN HE SAID MY CAR HAD ALREADY BEEN "THROUGH" THE RECALL AND ANY ADDITIONAL REPAIRS WOULD COST SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS. I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER (SECOND OWNER) AND DO NOT KNOW IF IT WAS REPLACED OR NOT AND THE DEALER WILL NOT DO ANYTHING EXCEPT FOR FULL PAY. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-06-20
- VIN: JHMZE1371YT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON MY 2000 HONDA INSIGHT WENT OUT AT 7,000 MILES AND THEY TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT. THEY REPLACED THE ON BOARD COMPUTER AND NOW THEY SAY THEY CAN FIX IT BUT WANT $500.00. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY 2 TIMES. THE LARGE ONE THAT POWERS THE CAR. DESPITE MANY MANY TRIES THEY HAVE NOT REPAIRED THIS LIGHT. SO I DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE OR NOT. I TOOK THIS TO CORPERATE AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR IT? *TR
VISIBILITY PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-12-07
- VIN: JHMZE1370YT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: TL* - THE CONTACT'S 2000 HYBRID HONDA INSIGHT HAD A DEFECTIVE BATTERY. WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT THE VEHICLE LOST POWER . DURING THE LAST INCIDENT THE CAR BECAME STRANDED ON A BUSY ROAD IN THE DARK WITHOUT ANY LIGHTS. THE DEALER TOLD HIM TO COME IN SO THAT THEY COULD REPAIR THE BATTERY.*AK
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-12-08
- VIN: JHMZE1379YT
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: I DROVE MY (ALWAYS GARAGED) INSIGHT TO WORK ON A COLD MORNING WHERE THE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 15 DEGREES WHEN I REACHED MY PLACE OF WORK AT 7:20 A.M. I RETURNED TO MY VEHICLE, IN THE PARKING LOT AT A LITTLE AFTER 12:00 P.M. TO FIND THAT THE REAR GLASS WAS COMPLETELY SHATTERED. THIS IS THE MAIN REAR GLASS THAT INCLUDES THE WINDOW DEFROSTER AND IS ONLY AVAILABLE THROUGH GENUINE HONDA PARTS. THERE IS NO AFTERMARKET MANUFACTURER OF THIS GLASS. MY PARKING LOT HAS FULL TIME SECURITY WITH CAMERAS IN PLACE. NO EXTERIOR FORCE, OTHER THAN THE ENVIRONMENT, HAD ANY EFFECT ON THE MALFUNCTION OF THE CAR'S REAR GLASS. THE ONLY THING I CAN IMAGINE IS THAT THE SUN HEATED THE COLD ALUMINUM HATCH AT A MUCH FASTER RATE THAN IT HEATED THE GLASS. THIS CAUSED THE GLASS TO BURST AND SHATTER. THERE WAS NO IMPACT MARK LIKE A ROCK OR BLUNT OBJECT MIGHT CREATE. BUT RATHER THERE WAS A FRACTURE ALL ALONG THE PERIMETER OF THE GLASS. UPON CONTACTING HONDA, AND TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE ALL SERVICE IN THE PAST HAS BEEN DONE, THEY DECLINED, ON BEHALF OF HONDA USA, TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECT IN THE AUTOMOBILE. THEREFORE, I HAD TO USE OUT OF POCKET AND INSURANCE TO TAKE CARE OF THIS CLEARLY DEFECTIVE PART. I TOOK PICTURES AND DOCUMENTED THE BROKEN GLASS. HONDA MOTOR COMPANY USA SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR AN UNSAFE AND DEFECTIVE REAR GLASS. *JB
AIR BAGS PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-07-20
- VIN: JHMZE1374YT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT DATE, THE IMA BATTERY IN MY 2000 HONDA INSIGHT, HAS REPEATEDLY LOST ITS CHARGE, RAPIDLY (CALLED A "RECALL EVENT"). THIS CAUSES AN UNEXPECTED HESITATION AND LACK OF ACCELERATION. ON THE INCIDENT DATE, I WAS ENTERING A HIGHWAY FROM AN ON RAMP AND COULDN'T ACCELERATE AT THE RATE THAT I WAS ACCUSTOMED TO, BECAUSE THE IMA BATTERY HAD QUICKLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY DISCHARGED. THIS RESULTED IN ME BLOCKING UPCOMING TRAFFIC AND SEVERAL DRIVERS HAD TO PERFORM AVOIDANCE MANEUVERS. THIS SUDDEN, UNEXPECTED LOSS OF IMA ASSIST, IS INDICATIVE OF A FAILING/AGING IMA BATTERY. HONDA'S COMPUTER MONITORING SYSTEM DOES NOT REGISTER/DETECT THIS AS A MIL CODE. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL THIS UNEXPECTED LOSS OF ACCELERATION CAUSE A LOSS OF LIFE. MORE INFORMATION ON THIS CAN BE FOUND ON: HTTP://WWW.INSIGHTCENTRAL.NET/FORUM/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?T=750 THIS FORUM IS MADE OF INSIGHT OWNERS AND I DON'T PUT A LOT OF STOCK IN THEIR EXPLANATIONS OF WHAT A RECALL EVENT IS. I CAN SAY DEFINITIVELY THAT 1). THESE RECALL EVENTS BECOME MORE FREQUENT AS THE IMA BATTERY AGES AND 2).THEY ARE DANGEROUS, AS OUTLINED ABOVE. HONDA WILL NOT REPLACE THE BATTERY, EVEN THOUGH IT IS UNDER WARRANTY, UNLESS A MIL IS GENERATED. THIS WILL ONLY HAPPEN WHEN THE IMA BATTERY IS HEAVILY DEGRADED. THE RECALL EVENTS, HOWEVER, OCCUR WITH LESS THAN THIS LEVEL OF DEGRADATION AND HONDA'S MONITORING SYSTEM IGNORES THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION. *JB
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-09-19
- VIN: JHMZE1357YT
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA INSIGHT. THE CAR MADE VERY MINIMAL NOISE. HAD SCHEDULED THE CAR TO BE LOOKED AT. PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT THE CAR HAD BEEN IN THE SHOP WITH ALL FOUR TIRES OFF THE CAR. WHEN THE CONTACT THE CAR BACK THERE WAS NEW NOISE. BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER NEXT DAY. THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT WRONG LUGS:NUTS WERE ON THE TIRES. THEY REPLACED THEM, AND THE CONTACT TOOK THE CAR. 3,000 MILES LATER, WITH LESS OF A NOISE , MADE A TURN AND THE CAR DID NOT MAKE THE TURN AND STOPPED. THE CONTACT GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND NOTICED THE TIRE WAS STILL GOING DOWN THE ROAD WITH THE CAR IN BETWEEN OTHER CARS . PICKED UP THE TIRE, MADE PHONE CALLS TO GET THE CAR TOWED. WHEN THE CONTACT ASKED THE DEALER WHAT HAPPENED, THE DEALER TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THEY ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THE CAR HAD BEEN VANDALIZED. BECAUSE ALL OF THE TIRES WERE COMPLETELY LOOSE BECAUSE THE RIMS AND POST WERE MADE OUT OF ALUMINUM. THE CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE UNLESS THE RIMS AND POST WERE REPLACED. WHEN CALLING HONDA, THEY TOLD THE CONTACT THAT NOTHING WAS TO BE DONE, AND THAT IT WASN'T THEIR FAULT. THE DEALER DID NOT FEEL RESPONSIBLE , EVEN ON A MAINTENANCE LEVEL TO ADVISE THE CONTACT OF THIS EVEN 3000 MILES EARLIER WHEN TIRES WERE OFF THE CAR, AND TWO NEW TIRES WERE PUT ON. THE RIMS COST $500 EACH. MAKING IT A TOTAL OF $2,000. *AK
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-09-30
- VIN: 1HGCG1657YA
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA ACCORD. THE SRS LIGHT WAS COMING ON AND STAYING ON. THE CONTACT CALLED HONDA AND THEY SAID THE VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER RECALL 02V080000. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE SERVICE DEALER ON 9-30-05, AND THEY DIAGNOSED CODE 15.3 (ELECTRICAL INTERFERENCE) WHICH WAS LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE CODE WAS CLEARED. THE CONTACT WAS CHARGED $110.00. THE CONTACT CALLED HONDA AGAIN AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION. HONDA SAID THAT THEY WOULD OPEN UP A CASE FOR HER TO RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THECONTACT'S V EHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. THEREFORE, AND SHE WILL NOT RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT. *SC *AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-03-24
- VIN: 4S6CK58W4Y4
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: WHILE FOOT IS ON BRAKE AT 4-WAY, CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT WILL COME ON AND THE ENGINE WILL START TO REV UP. TOOK IT TO HONDA IN PEORIA IL - FIRST TOLD THAT "THEY" DIDN'T CARE TO WORK ON MY SUV BECAUSE IT WASN'T A TRUE HONDA. THEN, THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE ME. AFTER THE THIRD TIME, THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS AFTER THE CAR WAS BROUGHT RIGHT OVER AFTER THE PROBLEM HAPPENED. NOTHING SHOWED, SO THEY CHANGED OUT A COUPLE PARTS INCLUDING THE CC SWITCH AND ACUATOR. PROBLEM CONTINUES TO OCCUR, BUT NOW THE CAR SHUTS OFF. NOT GOOD WHEN YOU HAVE A GREEN LIGHT. NOW, THE CAR IS OVERHEATING, ALWAYS A QUART LOW EVEN THOUGH OIL CHANGES ARE AT 3,000 MILES. ALSO, THE FUEL GAUGE KEEPS DROPPING THEN GOING BACK UP.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-03-19
- VIN: 2HKRL187XYH
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: SYSTEM FAILURE WITH AIRBAGS. VEHICLE HAS A SELF-MONITORING SYSTEM (SRS) WHICH IDENTIFED A SYSTEM FAILURE OF THE AIRBAGS. WE WERE NOT INVLOVED IN A CRASH BUT WERE INFORMED THAT IF WE WERE THAT THE BAGS WOULD FAIL TO WORK. MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO WARRANT AND I PERSONALLY HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE THE AIRBAGS FOR MY OWN SAFETY CONCERNS.
LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-02-10
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: WE PURCHASED A 2000 HONDA ODYSSEY IN FEB. WE WERE DRYING IN SNOW AND ICE ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER. THE VAN SLID AROUND AND WAS FACING A DROP-OFF. I HAD TO KEEP IT IN GEAR TO KEEP IT FROM SLIDING. I YELLED FOR MY HUSBAND AND CHILDREN TO GET OUT!. THE POWER SLIDING DOORS WOULD NOT OPEN B/C I WAS IN GEAR (REVERSE). IN MANUAL MODE THEY WERE TOO DIFFICULT FOR THE CHILDREN TO GET OPEN. A CAR WAS COMING DOWN THE HILL OUT OF CONTROL DIRECTLY TOWARDS US. WE REALLY DID SEE OUR LIVES FLASH BEFORE OUR EYES. LUCKLILY THE CAR WAS ABLE TO SQUEEZE BY THE FRONT OF US. I PUT IT IN PARK AND THE KIDS JUMPED OUT AS I SLOWLY SLID FORWARD. AFTER THEY WERE CLEAR OF THE VAN, I PUT IT IN REVERSE, PUT SOME GAS TO IT AND SLID AROUND AND WAS ABLE TO GET SAFELY OFF THE ROAD. I DID NOT REALIZE BEFORE BUYING THIS VAN THAT THE POWER DOORS WERE DIFFERENT THAN THE ONES ON OTHER MAKES OF VANS. MOST OF THEM OPEN EASILY MANUALLY. PLEASE CONSIDER PURSUING A CHANGE. I AM TRYING TO SELL THE VAN NOW- IT HAS PRACTICALLY SCARED THE LIFE OUT OF ME.*AK
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-12-21
- VIN: JHMZE1350YT
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: THE REAR HATCH WINDOW OF THE INSIGHT "SELF-DESTRUCTED" WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE OVERNIGHT. THE WEATHER HAD BEEN EXTREMELY COLD (IN THE TEENS), THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE ALL DAY WHILE AT WORK, AND THE REAR DEFROSTER HAD BEEN USED ON THE COMMUTE HOME. THE FOLLOWING MORNING, THE WINDOW WAS FOUND STILL BE IN PLACE BUT WAS BROKEN AROUND THE ENTIRE PERIMETER AND THE WINDOW ITSELF WAS COMPLETELY SHATTERED BEING HELD IN PLACE BY THE LAMINATE. THROUGH SOME ONLINE RESEARCH, I TRACKED DOWN ANOTHER INSIGHT OWNER WHO HAD REPORTED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM ON "YAHOO! GROUPS" TWO WEEKS EARLIER. I CONTACTED HIM AND FOUND THAT HIS WINDOW HAD "SELF-DESTRUCTED" IN THE EXACT SAME MANNER AFTER BEING PARKED OUTSIDE IN COLD WEATHER. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP ALONG WITH THE RESULTS OF MY RESEARCH AND THEY CONTACTED HONDA AMERICA. HONDA AMERICA TOLD THE DEALER THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE WINDOW THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF AND THAT THEY CONSIDER IT NORMAL DAMAGE THAT WILL HAVE TO BE PAID FOR (MY INSURANCE IS COVERING IT). AS THE INSIGHT IS A RATHER LIMITED PRODUCTION VEHICLE, THE REPAIR PARTS WILL TAKE A FEW DAYS TO OBTAIN. FOR THIS REASON, THE CURRENT DAMAGED PART (WINDOW) IS STILL AVAILABLE SHOULD AN INVESTIGATION BE WARRANTED. I CONSIDER THIS A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE AS THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY FOR THE WINDOW TO SPONTANEOUSLY BREAK WHILE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN. LUCKILY MYSELF AND THE OTHER OWNER HAD OUR VEHICLES PARKED AT THE TIME SO WE DID NOT HAVE ANY MOVING VEHICLE ISSUES. THIS WOULD APPEAR TO BE A CONCERN FOR PEOPLE WITH INSIGHT'S IN COLD WEATHER CLIMATES.*AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-09-14
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: THE ELECTRIC MOTOR ASSIST (IMA) IN MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY AND UNPREDICTABLY LOSES POWER ON A FREQUENT BASIS. THIS CAUSES A SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF POWER THROUGH A PROCESS CALLED "RECALIBRATING" IN WHICH THE BATTERIES BECOME FULLY DISCHARGED, AND THEN RECHARGE AGAIN VERY SLOWLY OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. AS THE IMA IS A SIGNIFICANT SOURCE OF POWER FOR THE VEHICLE, THE SUDDEN LOSS HAS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT ON AT LEAST THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE BATTERIES FOR THE IMA SEEM TO BEHAVE IN A WAY THAT SUGGESTS THE BATTERIES HAVE LOST A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF THEIR ORIGINAL POWER, WHILE HONDA HAS SETUP VERY CAREFUL LEGAL LANGUAGE TO DENY OTHERWISE. *JB

THE BATTERY-CHARGE DISPLAY GIVES NO INDICATION THAT THIS SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WILL OCCUR. GENERALLY IT IS SHOWING CLOSE TO FULL WHEN IT RECALIBRATES, USUALLY WHILE I'M NOT LOOKING AT IT (JUDGING TRAFFIC CONDITIONS) THEN MY CAR STALLS OUT AS I TRY TO LET OUT THE CLUTCH. *NLM

I recently noticed that the power cells in my car were discharging more frequently and with less stress on them. I contacted my dealer and found out that new batteries were unavailable and when they were available, they would be re-manufactured and cost $3-5000. I decided to trade the car, as the value after 3 years on a trade is only $8-9000. If you are unable to sell it privately, I suggest paying it off and keeping it until the batteries need replacing, and then hope that they are available. As of November 2002, they were not. It is concerning that a new vehicle priced at 21k is only worth 9k three model years later, with normal mileage. This says a lot about the manufacturer's and dealer's opinion of the vehicle.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It's great to know that it's been running smoothly for you without any issues, especially since you've only had it for three months and bought it used with 32,000 miles. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!
-
I've owned my car for less than 6 months and it has already saved me over $300 in fuel expenses. With gas prices continuing to soar, the savings margin only grows. On my daily commute of over 56 miles one way, I have been averaging between 80 and 85 mpg, and have even twice attained 91 mpg (!). My record for a shorter 17 mile trip is 100 mpg. This vehicle is truly awesome. Of course, achieving these kinds of figures requires adopting new, more fuel-efficient driving habits. But even when in a hurry, you can easily get 50-60 mpg without even thinking. Depending on driving conditions and locale, you can get 600-900 miles of driving from a single tank. How do you like that, OPEC?!!!
-
The Overview basically sums it up... You just can't beat it for the money, especially when used with an aftermarket 5-year 100K warranty for $7400. Although I did have a few slightly costly repairs from the previous owner's minor accident, it is well worth it in the long run. Everyone should have their own Insight, at least as a daily driver. I'm sure the costs would drop dramatically if enough people were buying them for their commutes.
-
This vehicle is truly impressive! Not only does it have an average of 69 MPGs, but it also has the lowest emissions of any gasoline vehicle on the planet. As someone who cares deeply about the environment, this is a huge plus for me. The car has plenty of storage space, which is perfect for me as I carry an entire soccer team's gear to matches weekly. The acceleration is just right for highway driving and the handling is comfortable. The gauges are also very informative, allowing you to adjust your driving habits to maximize the car's abilities to conserve. As someone who has owned 8 cars, I can confidently say that this is my absolute favorite!

Overall, this is a great personal vehicle (although it doesn't have a back seat). You can't beat the mileage it offers. It's worth noting that it has been factory recalled 6 times, but the manufacturer has taken care of it each time.
