2013 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2013 Honda Civic problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2013 Honda Civic, several common problems have been reported:

  • Engine Problems: Owners reported instances of the motor shutting off while driving, often caused by faulty sensor issues. Fortunately, this repair is relatively inexpensive, typically around $200.
  • Brake Problems: Complaints about premature wear of brake components were occasionally reported by owners.
  • Interior Material Quality: Some drivers noted that interior materials showed wear relatively quickly or felt less durable, although this is not a mechanical issue.
  • Exhaust System Rattles: A few owners reported rattling noises from the exhaust system, which could be bothersome.
  • Suspension Noise: Some drivers experienced noise or rattling from the suspension system, particularly over rough roads or bumps.
  • Trunk Space: Certain models had limited trunk space due to factors like the Hybrid's battery pack, offering less cargo capacity compared to other models.
  • High-Tech Features: While Honda added popular tech features, some drivers felt that the Civic lagged behind rivals in terms of infotainment offerings.
  • Lack of Versatile Hatchback Model: Unlike some competitors, the 2013 Civic lineup did not include a sporty and versatile 5-door hatchback model.
  • Airbag Investigations: The 2013 Civic had two open airbag investigations related to potential issues with the airbag control unit, which could lead to non-deployment during collisions.
  • Steering Wheel Lockup: A few drivers reported instances of steering wheel lockup, possibly due to issues with the power steering pump.
  • Jumpy Acceleration: Some owners experienced hesitant and jumpy acceleration, affecting a small number of five-speed automatic 2013 Civics.

These reported problems highlight various mechanical and functional issues that owners of the 2013 Honda Civic have encountered. It's essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and conduct thorough inspections before purchasing a used 2013 Civic to ensure a satisfactory ownership experience.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
  • VIN: 2HGFB2F8XDH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag light comes on sporadically - almost all of the time when it's cold, and then on/off when it is warmer. Throws the code B0001-13 - Open or Increased Resistance in Driver's Airbag Inflator. Brought it to the dealership and they told me that I needed to get the whole driver's side airbag replaced (to the tune of $1300 dollars). With the plethora of recalls surrounding 2000s to 2010s Civics, I have a hard time believing this shouldn't be covered under some sort of recall, especially with the amount of other people online who have experienced the same issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
  • VIN: 2HGFB2F8XDH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Evap system light also comes on at lower temperatures, and sporadically at warmer temperatures. It used to happen only once every couple of weeks, but now it comes on (and eventually turns off again) every day. Throws the codes P0497 - Evaporative Emission System Low Purge Flow and P145C - Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Range/Performance Problem. I've had my purge flow valve replaced, and not even two months later both errors have come back. My mechanic has looked at the car and cannot figure out what's going on, but lots of people online are having the same issue, which makes me think it's not just me.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-14
  • VIN: 2HGFB2F59DH
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I am writing to express my deep concern regarding a recurring issue with my vehicle's airbag system. Despite no physical damage to the vehicle and no apparent impact on the functionality of the airbag system, I am consistently receiving a "Check Airbag System" warning code. This message intermittently appears and disappears, causing significant uncertainty and raising serious safety concerns. Given the critical role of airbags in ensuring passenger safety, any inconsistency or potential malfunction in the system poses a significant risk. Even though there have been no visible signs of damage or issues, the persistent appearance of this warning message suggests an underlying problem that demands immediate attention. As a conscientious vehicle owner, I place the highest priority on the safety of myself, passengers, and fellow road users. Consequently, I implore Honda, as the manufacturer, to conduct a thorough investigation and promptly address the recurring issue with my vehicle's airbag system. Ensuring that the airbag system operates reliably and consistently is paramount to safeguarding lives in the event of an accident. Regrettably, when I approached the Honda dealership for assistance, I was informed that I would be held accountable for the cost of diagnostics and potentially the repairs. This response is unacceptable. Honda should assume responsibility for resolving a safety concern of this magnitude. I urge Honda to reconsider their stance and take decisive action to rectify this matter without imposing financial burdens on their customers. By assuming accountability and prioritizing safety above all else, Honda can uphold its commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction. Thank you for your immediate attention to this pressing issue. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-19
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 19XFB4F23DE
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Amid sliding briefly on ice, the driver side front and rear curtain airbags of my 2013 Honda Civic deployed. No collision or impact occurred to trigger this and, correspondingly, no external damage to the vehicle was sustained. Post-airbag deployment, despite the unexpected bodily impact, sudden jolt, and visual obstruction caused by the airbags, I was able to maintain control of the vehicle and maneuver to a nearby parking lot. Upon visual inspection of the vehicle, I confirmed no evidence of collision. The following day, Honda ran full diagnostics on the vehicle. The dealership indicated tests would reveal certain codes triggered w/ airbag deployment (what caused them to deploy). Inspection results, however, revealed no codes found in the proprietary computer, nor other detectable evidence of any cause. I asked whether a defect was possible and was told this could neither be confirmed nor ruled out. Per the dealer's explanation, only the presence of improper codes could reveal this with absolute certainty. In essence, the only explanation I received was that no explanation could be found. Honda denied my request to put these details in writing. I was given only a vague summary of the damage and a list of costs required for repair, totaling to over $10,000 (invoice attached). Geico said damages caused by airbag deployment are not covered by any policy unless a collision is reported. If deployment occurs w/o collision but other valid causal factor(s) are detected by inspection, damages may be covered under collision; However, if no cause is determined and no collision has occurred, damages are not covered. I am now left with a vehicle that is extremely unsafe to drive, over $10,000 worth of damage that neither insurance nor manufacturer will cover, and a left-side rib injury obtained by airbag impact, w/ associated ER costs. Although I obtained only minor physical injuries from this incident, myself and/or others could have been seriously injured or killed.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-24
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2HGFG3B59DH
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The assembly of the 2013 Honda civic ex was missing the rear bumper impact absorber. The component was not noticed until a collision removed the rear bumper from the car, exposing the interior of the assembly. The omission of the impact absorber in the bumper assembly from the manufacturer directly puts my safety at risk because this part is designed to absorb energy in a collision, and without the part I am more likely to be in a more serious accident. This problem was first noticed by the service shop who had confirmed that the part was missing from the assembly, and that it was a safety feature of the vehicle. The component had only been inspected by the independent service shop. There was no indication of the missing component before the accident

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-26
  • VIN: 19XFB2F86DE
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Wiper blade broke in an explosive fashion upon activating throwing plastic and metal components onto the drive way. Since this was in the drive way the components did not cause any harm to any other property but if this was the high way it is likely the components may have caused damage to other vehicles or motorcyclists. Wiper blade was purchased new 3 weeks prior to incident on 10-03-2023 and failed on 10-26-2023, in this time frame the vehicle had not been used frequently as it was having multiple parts repaired so the part should not have much wear and tear. The wiper blade is saved and available to test, it broke into 7 separate pieces in an explosive fashion including 2 metal wires, blade backing broke into 2 pieces, component that holds blade to mechanism broke to two pieces and a single rubber blade. Mechanism that holds blade in place was left in a jagged state. Concern was that if blade was allowed to continue operating it may have caused damage to glass. There are no warnings and component has not been notified to manufacturer yet but I will look into contacting manufacturer after completing this report during their next business hours.

  • Summary: Car sitting on level ground, driven previous day with no problem. Upon unsuccessfully trying to start car, I smelled strong gasoline odor. I turned off ignition and opened hood and observed nothing unusual. I backed car up enough to get out to check for gas puddle. There was a puddle about 24 inches across of gasoline where car had been parked. I have arranged to have vehicle towed to independent auto repair. Note: gas was leaking from above rear driver's side wheel.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • VIN: 19XFB2F80DE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Warning lights appeared on my dashboard one morning. I took it to a honda dealer in frisco tx and they advised that my VSA module that controls my ABS system has failed. They advised the part is on back order and could not provide any repairs due to that. Currently my ABS system does not function due to the the failed part that Honda can not replace. They also would not provide repairs even I could source a used part.

SERVICE BRAKES,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-06
  • VIN: 2HGFG3B58DH

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-02
  • VIN: 2HGFB2F87DH
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The component that has failed is the abs modulator system. The problem with the abs modulator failing on me puts me and my family at great risk including death because the abs modulator works alongside with the brakes, power steering and the vsa system all of which are the main components to a cars safety. Yes I have take my Honda to a certified technician who informed me that the and modulator has gone bad and will need to be replaced immediately due my safety alongside everyone who is on the road. Lastly when I first purchased the car everything my worked fine and their were no problems whatsoever until one day I was driving down the road and suddenly the abs light, power steering light, vsa light, and brake light all turned on which led to my car having horrible performance alongside my brakes feeling sloppy as well as my steering literally moving even though I was going straight. Overall I hope that you will finally do something about this problem because it is very frustrating.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
  • VIN: 19XFB2F87DE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have to turn on my car start driving it no more than like 15 to 10 mph and then it shakes it jerks and cut off and it does that repeatedly until I pass second gear
2023-07-16

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
  • VIN: 19XFB2F86DE
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Car gives the following codes: Check Power Steering, Check Brake System, Check ABS, Check VSA, it would turn on and off at random times starting around November 2022, was initially informed that it could be a software update by the local Honda dealer, with a 2-3 hour labor charge to update and it might fix it. Eventually the lights would remain on most of the time and I could now pay for a diagnostic which determined the VSA modulator was defective (Code DTC 121-11). This diagnosis was generated on March 18, 2023, as of this date, July 16, 2023 there is no ETA for the part to arrive but have been informed 9 other VSA modulators have been ordered and I am 6th in line, none have arrived to this particular local Honda parts department. Looking online there appears to be a trend of car owners of 2012-2014 Honda Civics and Honda Accords that have observed their VSA modulators fail. The modulator is only manufactured by Honda and currently it does not appear that there is any viable solution apart from purchasing a new part and programing it to the vehicle by the Honda dealer. From my understanding this component ensures the stability of the vehicle in different terrains and ensures the stability of the vehicle in wet conditions.

Negative 2013 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Forest Ortiz 2024-11-29

I bought the manual version of this car because I didn't like how bad shifting felt in the automatic. The mileage is insanely good, averaging about 37 combined with 75% highway and 25% around town. I drive pretty conservatively, using cruise control with the econ button on during highway driving. The car's safety features are impressive - I was rear-ended and not injured, and the car held up fine. It's also fairly quiet and comfortable, with good space for a smaller car. However, it was relatively cheap and feels cheap compared to my previous VW Golf, which felt like a tank in comparison. Additionally, the paint already has a chip after one month, and there is a noticeable sloshing sound that comes from the gas tank if you have the radio off.

  2. Price Parker 2024-09-08

Although I have been a loyal Honda customer for over 20 years, I regret to say that my recent purchase has been a disappointment. Despite my initial excitement and positive test drive experience, the car has proven to be extremely uncomfortable to drive. In fact, the discomfort has been so severe that I am now considering trading the car in for something else, even though it would result in a significant loss of money. As a confident and experienced driver, I have never encountered such discomfort in a vehicle before. I hope that Honda can address this issue and improve their product for future customers.

  3. Lourdes Tremblay 2024-08-29

The gas mileage is great, but unfortunately, this car is not the most comfortable for long trips. I experienced a lot of discomfort in my back and hips, which made it difficult to enjoy the journey. Since returning from my trip, I have found it challenging to get back into the swing of things at work. I am currently searching for a replacement seat that will provide me with the comfort I need.

  4. Ladarius Crona 2024-08-28

I really like the car overall, but I'm still having a hard time getting past the cheap honeycomb grill and the too black alloy wheels. I didn't realize when I bought the car 3 weeks ago that the radiator is as visible as the grill itself. However, I'm happy to report that the interior noise and engine have improved, and the overall handling is very good. I wish I could get past the toys-for-us grill!

  5. Joey Mayer 2024-04-14

If you're considering buying this car, please be aware that I've had some issues with the USB port for the audio and the radio dashboard freezing up. Unfortunately, despite taking my car to Norm Reeves Honda in Cerritos California multiple times, the issue has not been resolved. While Honda has been unable to find a fix for this problem, they have been in regular contact with me to discuss the situation. Although it has been a stressful experience, I appreciate their efforts to help me resolve the issue.

Positive 2013 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Tavares Stroman 2024-11-19

UPDATE (70,000 mile): Still a great fun to drive car with no component defects or unusual maintenance! As someone who has driven nothing but 4-WD cars for over 20 years, I was frustrated this winter when I got stuck in ice and thick snow on 3 occasions - even with Michelin X-Ice snow tires! So, I've decided to get 4 each Nokian Hokkapolittas v8 studded tires for next year, and I'm hoping that getting stuck will soon be a thing of the past! UPDATE (55000 mile): I'm still driving my Si and, aside from routine maintenance, there have been ZERO mechanical, electrical, or physical problems! It's a great car! To gain horsepower (~36), torque, and engine responsiveness, I've added a cold air intake, 2.5

  2. Samir Wyman 2024-11-15

Test drives alone cannot determine this. My back pain was caused by the car's seat. The cause took some time to identify.

  3. Skylar Harber 2024-11-02

Congratulations on your new car purchase! Last week, I bought a 2013 Civic coupe with automatic transmission for my wife. Recently, I decided to test how much mileage I could get out of the car by driving with the lightest foot possible. I had to drive to the airport, which was a nearly 50 mile round trip. On the way there, I drove at speeds between 60 and 70 with no AC, and the on board mileage computer registered an impressive 53 mpg! Although there is a minor downhill bias since I live a few hundred feet above sea level and the airport is near sea level, I was still thrilled with the results. On the way back, I decided to use the AC and still managed to get close to a hybrid's MPG with a total trip reading of 43 MPG. Overall, I am extremely happy with my car and its performance!

  4. Urban Abbott 2024-10-29

The power steering is incredibly smooth and requires practically no effort. However, the Bluetooth sound quality could be improved. Despite this, the car remains peppy even with econo mode engaged. Overall, I think this is a great car for the money.

  5. Garrick Gutkowski 2024-10-22

I had purchased a 2012 model with a 5-speed automatic, but after 3 years, I missed driving a stick so much that I sold it to a family member. Luckily, I found my '13 manual ex coupe and 4 years later, I am still very happy with it. Honda makes the best compact car manual trannys, and the clutch and precision shifter are a joy to use, even in traffic! I wish more people would ditch their CVTs and bring back the manuals! The improvements over my '12 are the two-tone wheels, automatic climate control, back-up camera, and nicer interior plastics. Although I have a few gripes, such as the tiny toy car-sized battery and the R18 motor lacking guts, these are minor complaints as no car is perfect. Overall, I highly recommend this car, especially with a manual! **Update 8/19/20: The car is still performing well at 83,000 miles. Although I can't find the reason for the gradual drop in mpg to 31 over the past year, I've replaced spark plugs and cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body. There are no codes being thrown. 31 mpg is still quite good, but it's just weird that this happened. Nonetheless, I'm still very happy with the car.***Update 8/19/21: After doing a more thorough throttle body cleaning, the mpg improved to near-original level of 37mpg. I've found that Pennzoil 0w20 synthetic performs best of all oils I've tried in this car. ***Update 9/1/23: The car is still going strong at 109,000 miles, despite some clear coat failure on the roof and trunklid, which is normal here in Hawaii. I'm very happy with my car, especially with how new car prices have skyrocketed lately. Although I wish I had the black interior instead of tan, I had no choice at the time of purchase.
