The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common Problems with the Honda Civic 2023:

  • Steering Rack Recall:
Some 2023 Honda Civic owners have reported experiencing sticky steering when traveling at 55mph or above, which can be caused by a faulty steering rack. However, not all Civics with this issue are included in the recall, leaving some owners to wonder what they can do if their car is not covered.
  • Interior Comfort and Features:
Some drivers have reported issues with the interior of the 2023 Honda Civic, including uncomfortable seats and a lack of power seats, as well as a weak sound system and the absence of Sirius radio in some models.
  • Electrical Accessories:
Some owners of the 2023 Honda Civic have reported issues with various electrical accessories in the car, including the body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, and wireless charging pad. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to significant safety concerns.
  • Dynamic Driving and Fuel Consumption:
Some drivers have reported that the 2023 Honda Civic's small turbo engine can strain under dynamic driving conditions, leading to suboptimal fuel consumption and a less enjoyable driving experience. This issue may be particularly noticeable for those who use their car for commuting or long trips.

In conclusion, while the 2023 Honda Civic has received positive reviews from many owners, there are some common issues that have been reported, including lane control/steering issues, steering rack recall, interior comfort and features, electrical accessories, and dynamic driving and fuel consumption. Negative 2023 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Otho Balistreri 2025-01-28

I really appreciate the styling of this car both inside and out! Although I opted for the lunar silver in the touring model, which is the first Honda I’ve ever owned, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. I purchased this car for its gas savings, and it was one of the few cars on the market that wasn’t price gouging! However, I didn't compare it to other cars in this segment. Regardless, at this price point, Honda could have done better. Unfortunately, Honda didn’t provide an option for lumbar support or a decent seat in any class of this civic. As someone who is 5’11 and 42 years old, I cannot get comfortable at all! The legroom is about an inch short, and I experience constant back pain. The lower part of my back has no support at all! I’ve tried various pillow types, but none have worked. I’ve been to the chiropractor several times since I’ve purchased this car, and now it’s parked, and I’ve gotten back in my truck. So be warned! Let's talk about the road noise for a bit. I’m not even sure if they have any sound deadening in the flooring at all, and if they do, it’s paper-thin! The tires are all-season Goodyear, which I’m sure makes this worse! If I keep the car long enough to change tires, I guess I’ll find out! I’m sure I’ll trade and eat the negative equity at some point! The drivers who don’t live in areas where the idiots opt to use coarse pavement won’t have issues, smooth surfaces are great! On the bright side, the engine and power are spot on, and I’ve had no mechanical issues as of yet (3200 miles). There are some personal things that, well, just irritate me that some won’t even care about. In no certain order, lane assist isn’t worth using, system warnings are too low even at max volume when the radio is on, Honda link app for this car is a joke!! Remote start is only useable via key fob, but you have to be in eyesight of the car when using it, or you won’t know it worked (parking lights flash 3x), then the whole car is dark. I’m not a fan of the windshield wiper change mode, nor the washer system. There is no digital gauge to display tire pressure, but you will receive a warning if a tire is low. This is a minor issue that I have noticed, but it is not a major concern. Another issue that I have noticed is that the paint is very thin. I was standing near my car parked under a tree when an acorn fell out of the tree, bounced on my hood, and gave me two chips that were fingernail deep! Overall, I think this is a great car with stylish looks and peppy performance. If you are considering purchasing it, I would recommend asking to keep it for a day or two to see if it suits your needs.

  2. Oscar Abshire 2025-01-17

The paint quality on these Civics is subpar. My black 2023 model has a dull appearance with noticeable orange peel. Additionally, the bumper still has buff marks from the factory's attempt to fix the issue. As a Honda owner, I am disappointed with the paint quality.

  3. Jaycee Bailey 2025-01-12

I was a bit surprised by Edmunds Top Rated Awards car choice for 2023. Before heading to the dealer for a test drive, I read through several reviews, both positive and negative, to get a sense of other owners' experiences. After testing the new Civic, I found myself agreeing with many of the other drivers' complaints, particularly regarding road noise and driver seat comfort, specifically the lack of lumbar support and tight seat. I didn't have enough time behind the wheel to experience any of the other issues with the infotainment system, but I did find that the driving aids tended to be on the overactive side, which could be more of an annoyance than assistance. While the 1.5 turbo is punchy, the CVT lagging initial response tells me that a CVT might not be the best match for this engine. (The 6 sp. manual may be a better choice). Yes, the Civic is fun to drive around town, but it's not my first choice for my long commutes, let alone my road trips... All in all, while it's not my favorite Civic, fortunately, in this price segment, there are plenty of choices with similar road manners and a comfortable ride. (Mazda 3, here I come...)

  4. Jimmie Pouros 2024-07-17

The car's performance is subpar, with issues such as multiple navigation failures, shaky steering wheel, and poor gas mileage averaging at 28 miles on the highway. The driver assistance system is also unreliable in heavy rain or fog. These problems are not present in my previous 2021 Honda Civic, which I greatly prefer. As a loyal Honda customer, I hope the company will address these issues and maintain their reputation for excellence.

Positive 2023 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Andy Mitchell 2025-02-21

I absolutely love driving my Honda! While I wasn't initially a fan of the more aggressive styling of the 10th generation, I find that the 11th gen looks more mature and refined. The interior styling is the best in Civic's history, and I find the cloth seats to be incredibly comfortable, even on longer drives. The leather steering wheel is also a pleasure to engage with. While there is some interior noise, it's not too bad, and the engine isn't too loud at cruising speeds. While there were some corners cut with this car, and the price (27k+ for a Civic!?) is a bit steep, I still give it four stars. My biggest issue is with the instrument cluster, which could have been better (as it is with the upper level trim). Overall, I have no regrets and am very happy with my choice!

  2. Jess Rosenbaum 2025-01-27

I must say, this car has been the best one I have ever driven. It was super easy to adapt to after driving various vehicles. I felt like I had been driving it forever when I got behind the wheel for the first time. The heating and AC warm/cool the car like lightning, and for the trim that I got, I feel I got significantly more features than I did with my previous car (a ford mustang), which is saying something since this car is 10k cheaper! It's sporty, it's peppy, and the brakes are fantastic. I couldn't have asked for a better vehicle. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and fun ride!

  3. Fredy Gleason 2024-11-15

You're so stylish! I absolutely love the ride.

  4. Percival Heaney 2024-10-10

I really like the color and electronic display. The seats are super comfortable and the ride is incredibly smooth. It handles really well too! The only downside might be that I could end up paying a bit more for gas, even though the gas mileage is pretty good.

  5. Theodore Carroll 2024-10-05

You've got a great car with excellent steering control and low maintenance!
