The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2014 Honda Civic problems

The 2014 Honda Civic has been praised for its low cost of ownership, great features, and excellent reliability ratings. However, there are a few common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most common issues is related to the transmission. The 2014 Civic's Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) has been known to have problems with its software, which can lead to rattling in Eco-mode.

Another common problem is related to the seats. Uncomfortable seats are the number one complaint among 2014 Civic owners. The design of the seats and lack of padding can lead to back and hip pain on long drives.

Tire pressure warning lights are also a common issue in the 2014 Civic. The sensors for the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) can fail, leading to false warnings or no warnings at all.

Air conditioner failures are rare, but some owners have reported issues with the A/C in their 2014 Civic. When the A/C fails, it is usually due to a compressor or condenser problem.

There have been two recalls for the 2014 Honda Civic. The first is for a potential problem with the CVT transmission, where the transmission drive pulley shaft could be damaged if the transmission fluid level is low.

In terms of technology and safety features, the 2014 Civic is well-equipped. Base technology includes a five-inch infotainment system with USB, AUX, and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as a four-speaker stereo in the sedan and a six-speaker stereo in the coupe.

The 2014 Honda Civic's three engine options offer enough power for daily driving, solid fuel economy, or athletic performance. Performance is average on the 2014 Civic, and quick on the Si model.

In terms of color options, the 2014 Civic is available in a variety of colors, including white, silver, black, gray, blue, red, and green.

The 2014 Honda Civic is a compact car, and is available as either a coupe or a sedan. There's a decent amount of passenger room in the sedan, but rear seat legroom is cramped in the coupe.

In summary, while the 2014 Honda Civic is generally a reliable and well-equipped car, there are a few common problems that owners have reported. These include issues with the transmission, uncomfortable seats, tire pressure warning lights, and air conditioner failures. However, with regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise, these problems can be minimized or avoided altogether.

What is the common problem of Honda Civic?

Brakes. Some Civic owners have complained of squealing brakes; Honda is said to be aware of the problem and working on a fix, though it's worth keeping in mind that any Civic you test drive with noisy brakes may not be easy to fix.

Is the 2014 Honda Civic a reliable car?

Great car, but small.

Civic LX sedan. Small car that is extremely reliable and handles like a sports car.

Does a 2014 Honda Civic have transmission problems?

On the 2014-2015 Civic and 2015 Fit, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) may have a weakened drive-pulley shaft (the part connected to the crankcase) that can break when exposed to high hydraulic pressure. This can result in power loss and even the front wheels locking up while driving.

What was a bad year for Honda Civic?

What Year Did the Honda Civic Have Engine Problems? The Honda Civic years 2001 – 2006 is a notorious batch of vehicles in the lineup with multiple engine and airbag issues. However, models from 2006 to 2008 and a few 2009 models had coolant issues such as leaks that could blow up your engine.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
  • VIN: 2HGFB2F87EH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The issue with the engine start/stop button in Honda cars is a concerning matter that has drawn attention due to its potential safety implications and inconvenience for drivers. Reports have surfaced indicating that some Honda vehicles equipped with this feature may experience intermittent or complete failure of the engine start/stop button to function as intended. One notable manifestation of this problem is the inability to start the engine despite repeated attempts to press the start/stop button. In some cases, the button may become unresponsive altogether, leaving drivers stranded and unable to operate their vehicles. This malfunction poses not only a significant inconvenience but also a safety risk, particularly in emergency situations where the ability to start the engine promptly is crucial. The root cause of this issue is not always clear, as it may stem from various factors such as electrical failures, software glitches, or mechanical defects within the start/stop button mechanism itself. Regardless of the underlying cause, the consequence remains the same—an unpredictable and unreliable operation of a fundamental component in the vehicle's ignition system. For Honda owners experiencing this problem, it can lead to frustration and concern about the reliability of their vehicles, especially if the issue persists despite attempts to rectify it through repairs or maintenance. Additionally, there may be associated costs involved in diagnosing and fixing the malfunction, adding further inconvenience and financial strain to affected individuals.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-04
  • VIN: 19XFB2F82EE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission suddenly started slipping and wasnt pulling reliably while I was on the highway in the middle of St. Louis, MO with heavy, fast traffic. There were no warning lights or signs to alert me that something was wrong before this happened. I immediately pulled off the highway, but struggled to change lanes in heavy traffic with very little pull from the transmission. I was forced to cut in front of people that were moving faster than me in order to get out of the way. Once I got off the highway, I immediately stopped to check under the hood. The fill plug for the transmission was off, and was laying next to the fill hole. I had to have it towed, and the shop told me that the vent plug on top of the transmission was clogged. They believe that this is the cause for the excessive pressure buildup which caused the plug to come out. They also said that a sensor on the bottom of my transmission started leaking oil due to the pressure. The sensor was not damaged in any way, but the oil leaking out caused damage to my transmission. The shop informed me that my transmission was low on cvt oil when they drained it, but didn't see any concerning signs in the oil. They refilled it hoping that it would fix the problem. After testing, they informed me that too much damage was caused to the transmission, and I would need a new one. Honda told me that the transmission was out of warranty both by miles (85,000) and year (2014). I had the car towed to another shop closer to home, and they put a new transmission in. I have had the new transmission for less than a week, and the fill cap has already popped off again. The vent does not look clogged this time, but I'm worried that dust or grit could have gotten in or that I may have lost a significant amount of cvt oil. I have to have it towed to the shop again to check my cvt oil level and make sure it's safe to drive.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-03
  • VIN: 2HGFB6E57EH
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Air bag light came on like 1 year ago. I had the dealership do the diagnostic on the car. They said it was cable relay. They said estimate to repair was over $2000. I have contacted Honda Goodwill department and after several emails and phone calls they gave me an option to pay $100 and they cover the rest. I have agreed. They have replaced cable relay and everything was fine. About a month later the airbag light came back on. I went to the dealership for diagnostics and they said that its the driver side airbag that is defective and that they recommended it to be replaced. Cost with labor $1100. I wrote to Honda Goodwill again but the said they only did a one time courtesy and that i am responsible for the future expenses. The car has never been in an accident and its not my fault that there is an airbag issue. Im afraid of my and my family’s safety when i drive the car. Please help.

This issue has been recalled for this vehicle but not this VIN. I have notified 3 Honda repair shops of this issue, and have been turned away. The problem is with the electromagnet in the electric steering column. It is well documented, and I have video of several instances of thi issue occurring. Additional witnesses of the problem are available. And the incident itself resulting in property damage and bodily harm. Honda was made aware of this problem on multiple occasions, and did nothing to remedy the problem.

STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-02
  • VIN: 2HGFB2F80EH
  • Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Honda Civic 2014 - The right CV axle (drive shaft) was corroded and detached causing the vehicle to become immovable while in traffic. Fortunately, we were near a stop light and traffic was going slow and able to go around the vehicle without causing a crash. The vehicle had to be towed. This same issue is already a recall for the Honda Accord 2013-2015. We had this same thing happen to our 2013 Honda Accord at a major traffic intersection. Again, the vehicle had to be towed and repaired. The remaining side was replaced via Honda recall. We are asking that there be a mandatory recall of this issue for the 2014 Honda Civic as it is a safety risk. We are just lucky that both of these incidents occurred while near stop lights and no one was injured. However, there is one side remaining on our Civic that needs replaced and hopefully the recall will be issued before the car breaks down and causes a crash and possible deathly injury. We contacted Honda and they said we can take the car in for a diagnostic inspection at a personal cost to us of $100-$500 depending on the dealer. This is unacceptable.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-30
  • VIN: 2HGFG3B54EH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: On August 30, while driving the power steering warning activated and the steering wheel become extremely hard to move. Stopped the car and followed the troubleshoot procedure; however, the failure persisted and had to request a tow truck. When the tow truck showed up several hours later, the steering operated normally and warning lights were gone. The car was towed to the Honda dealership Klein Honda 10611 Evergreen Way south, Everett, WA 98204. As the car was offloaded the tow truck, the steering operated normally and without any warnings. After few minutes at the dealership, I started the car and got the steering warning and the steering was extremely hard to move. The next day I got a call from the dealer and was told that the Electric Power Steering module was filled with water and was completely burned. The Service Manager provided the DTC fault codes 33-01 and 33-06. The dealership brought an expert to trace the water source on Friday Sept 8. The water expert investigated the water leak source. The water leak was caused by deteriorating insulation material on the right-hand side of the car and ended up in the Electric Power Steering module, causing the loss of steering. This raises significant concerns as a customer and as a person sharing the road with other Honda cars for the following facts: The car has low miles, less than 78000, The car is 9 years old, The car has been in mild climate/weather, Honda does not require inspection/removal and replacement of such components, There have been a significant number of events like this for this model. I'd like to request your department to open an investigation to this matter. This potentially impacts any vehicle sharing the road with Honda. In simple terms: Loss of steering = Loss of lives. Due to pure luck this did not ended in a fatal accident. 1/2 down the road it would have! Attached are pictures from the determination of the expert on how the water entered into the Electric Power Steering module.

Negative 2014 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Hester Hamill 2024-11-09

During the first week of owning the car, I noticed that the air conditioning was not working properly. Although I regret not testing it at the dealer, I was disappointed to have to take a brand new car to the shop for repairs. After two years of use, the car is starting to show some wear and tear, including a few rock chips on the hood. Some aspects of the car that I find unfavorable include the CVT, which produces a loud whine noise and is not recommended for highway driving, excessive road noise, the lack of a volume knob, numb steering, and the driver side window that shifts the interior door in the direction of the window going up and down.

  2. Kip Gutmann 2024-10-06

I purchased a Honda Civic a year ago, but unfortunately, I have experienced several issues since then, including a bad tire, bad hubcaps, paint coming off, rust, an oil pan that was not sealed during manufacturing, and a defective windshield. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my decision to purchase a Honda and believe that these issues can be resolved through proper maintenance and repair. Moving forward, I will continue to take good care of my vehicle and address any issues that arise promptly. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  3. Quincy Wyman 2024-08-01

Nice looking lil car. Everything is good, except the CVT transmission. Unfortunately, we've had to replace it twice already, and we're about to do it again, even though the car has done less than 100k miles. We've had some issues with dealer support, and Honda America hasn't been very helpful either. Would my family buy another Honda? Not anytime soon.

  4. Earnest Marks 2024-02-28

Hi April, I wanted to share with you that I recently purchased a 2014 EXL Honda Civic. When I was looking for a car, I had a list of must-haves and gas mileage was at the top of that list. Since I live 30 miles away from town and drive mostly on the highway, I use the cruise control, Econ button, and try to stay in the green dash light to maximize fuel efficiency. However, I have yet to see 40 mpg or even come close to that mileage. The car currently has over 3000 miles on it and the dealer assured me that the car would get better mileage with the summer gas and once it passed 1500 miles. Currently, the car is averaging 27/33 mpg. Let me know if you have any tips or suggestions on how to improve the gas mileage. Thanks!

  5. Demond Johnson 2024-01-27

Despite being leased through Honda Financial Service, I had a negative experience with the car's seats. My attempts to reposition the seat and add support cushions were unsuccessful, and even my husband and niece experienced back pain during rides. After researching, I found that many Honda seat complaints have been posted in recent years. However, I was able to make it through the 3-year lease with the car, and it was 100% reliable every day. To deal with the uncomfortable seats, I purchased a 'Bottoms Up Posture Seat' and used a lumbar backrest support, which helped a lot. I have now leased a 2017 Subaru Outback, and the seats are comfortable for all of us, even without the added support.

Positive 2014 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Roderick Goldner 2025-01-05

The lines on the car, to my eye, are well thought out and handsome. Although I have not put a lot of miles on it yet, it is immediately apparent that it is screwed together well. It just feels like a solid car. If you are looking for a daily driver that is economical to purchase and own, safe, and has enough 'sport' to put a smile on your face, the SI nails it. So far, it has been a great experience for me!

  2. Eldred Lemke 2024-11-01

If you're looking for some advice on buying a used car, I highly recommend going for a 5-year-old Honda with under 50,000 miles. I've used this formula three times now and it has yet to disappoint me. The Honda is a fantastic all-around car that performs well in many areas. One of the things I love about it is the naturally aspirated engine, which is not available in the 2017+ Si models that come with turbos. It's worth noting that even in 2019, the Acura ILX is still being produced on this older platform. The 2014 Si comes with 18

These cars are definitely among the best values on the market, which is a well-known fact. It's great to see that they are still one of the best cars in their category!

I recently purchased a used 2014 Honda Civic LX with a 1.8 L engine and CVT transmission. Although I've only had it for two weeks, I'm already loving it! This past weekend, I drove it 1100 miles on the highway and was pleasantly surprised to get 47.5 MPG! The ride is smooth, the acceleration is seamless, the seats are comfortable, and the technology package is great for the price. I'm thrilled with my purchase and look forward to enjoying this car for many years to come!

You did an excellent job! Your performance was outstanding. I also noticed that your car has great gas mileage, which is fantastic. Additionally, it looks like you were very comfortable throughout the experience. Well done!
