Common 1997 Gmc Sierra 3500 problems

The 1997 GMC Sierra 3500 has been reported to have several common problems, with the most frequent complaints being related to the wheels and hubs. One of the worst reported problems is the spare tire falling off while driving, which can be extremely dangerous and cause accidents. This issue is attributed to the improper installation or securing of the spare tire, which can lead to it detaching from the vehicle while in motion.

Another problem reported by owners is related to the brakes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received four complaints about brake problems in the 1997 Sierra 3500. These issues include the brake booster malfunctioning, causing a complete loss of braking ability, which could lead to accidents. Additionally, the rear seatbelts may lock up, preventing their use in the event of a crash, further increasing the risk of injury or death.

Steering problems have also been reported, with the NHTSA receiving four complaints about steering issues in the 1997 Sierra 3500. These problems include the steering suddenly locking while making a turn, which can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle and potentially crash. This issue is particularly dangerous, as it can occur without warning and may be difficult to correct once it has begun.

Drivetrain problems are another common issue with the 1997 Sierra 3500, with the NHTSA receiving two complaints about these issues. One of the reported problems is the rear axle seal going out, causing oil to leak into the brake shoes and resulting in a loss of rear brakes. This issue can be particularly dangerous, as it can lead to a complete loss of braking ability and increase the risk of accidents.

Body and paint problems have also been reported, with the NHTSA receiving one complaint about these issues in the 1997 Sierra 3500. These problems include the rear of the cab not being welded properly, which can lead to structural issues and decreased safety in the event of a crash.

Seat belts and airbags problems have also been reported, with the NHTSA receiving one complaint about these issues in the 1997 Sierra 3500. These problems include the rear seatbelts locking up and being unable to be used in the event of a crash, which can increase the risk of injury or death.

Interior accessories problems have also been reported, with the NHTSA receiving one complaint about these issues in the 1997 Sierra 3500. These problems include issues with the vehicle's interior accessories, such as the radio or climate control system, which can affect the overall functionality and comfort of the vehicle.

Engine problems have also been reported, with the NHTSA receiving one complaint about these issues in the 1997 Sierra 3500. These problems include the engine stalling and requiring a rebuilt engine, which can be costly and time-consuming to repair.

Finally, windows and windshield problems have been reported, with the NHTSA receiving one complaint about these issues in the 1997 Sierra 3500. These problems include issues with the vehicle's windows or windshield, such as cracks or leaks, which can affect the overall safety and functionality of the vehicle.

In conclusion, the 1997 GMC Sierra 3500 has been reported to have several common problems, with the most frequent complaints being related to the wheels and hubs, brakes, steering, drivetrain, body and paint, seat belts and airbags, interior accessories, engine, and windows and windshield. These issues can affect the overall safety, functionality, and comfort of the vehicle, and may require costly and time-consuming repairs.

Positive 1997 Gmc Sierra 3500 car reviews

2wd diesel dually, wouldn't go with anything else. 30 gal tank, 400+ miles towing or non-towing. Excellent power, starts in all conditions, pulls anything. Comfortable ride, easy maintenance, great handling, powerful - what more could you ask for?

  2. Adam Waters 2024-05-27

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you my experience with my 1993 GMC Sierra 3500. I bought it two years ago with 230,000 miles on it, and now it has 265,000 miles. I'm happy to report that in that time, I've only had to replace the alternator, batteries, radiator, shocks, and two tires. This truck is amazing - it doesn't use any oil and doesn't smoke at all. Lately, it's been a little sluggish when first started after sitting for a few days, but I think changing the plugs will do the trick. This truck pulls my car and trailer beautifully and is perfect for taking the family on trips. I just wish gas was $0.50 a gallon, but oh well! Thanks for listening.
