Common 1998 Gmc Sierra 3500 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the GMC Sierra 3500 1998, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Windshield Wiper Motor Component Failure:
    • Owners of the 1998 GMC Sierra 3500 have experienced issues with the windshield wiper motor, leading to intermittent failure of the wipers. This problem can manifest as the wipers not working, failing to turn on, running continuously, or only working at one speed setting. A defective wiper motor control board is often the cause of these issues. Temporary fixes may include tapping on the control box to get the wipers working again, but a permanent solution involves replacing the wiper motor control board.
  2. Coolant Leaks or Oil Leaks From Intake Manifold Gaskets:
    • Another common problem reported by owners of the 1998 GMC Sierra 3500 is coolant leaks or oil leaks stemming from the intake manifold gaskets. This issue can lead to coolant or oil seepage, potentially causing overheating or engine damage. Repairing this problem typically involves replacing the intake manifold gaskets, which can cost around $1,000 if done by a mechanic.
  3. Restricted Secondary Air Injection Valves:
    • Owners of the 1998 GMC Sierra 3500 have also faced issues with restricted secondary air injection valves. This problem can result in reduced airflow, triggering the check engine light to illuminate. To resolve this issue, the faulty check valves need to be replaced. It is recommended to replace both valves, even if the fault initially appears on only one bank of cylinders, to prevent future failures. The cost of replacing each valve may range from $100 to $150.
  4. Transmission Problems:
    • Additionally, the 1998 GMC Sierra 3500 has been associated with transmission issues, including difficulties related to the check engine light, gear shifting, and gear locking. Owners have reported problems with the transmission not engaging properly, especially in first and overdrive gears. Issues moving between gears and the transmission not locking into gear have also been highlighted as common complaints.

These problems with the GMC Sierra 3500 1998 can impact the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall driving experience. Addressing these issues promptly through proper maintenance and repairs is crucial to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

It sounds like you have a great truck! With just over 140,000 miles, it's impressive that it doesn't burn oil and still has plenty of power. I think it's a great idea to do a minor restoration and keep the original colors of camel beige with cherry red sides. It's always been a head turner and I'm sure it will continue to be. Best of luck with the restoration!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you my experience with my 1993 GMC Sierra 3500. I bought it two years ago with 230,000 miles on it, and now it has 265,000 miles. I'm happy to report that in that time, I've only had to replace the alternator, batteries, radiator, shocks, and two tires. This truck is amazing - it doesn't use any oil and doesn't smoke at all. Lately, it's been a little sluggish when first started after sitting for a few days, but I think changing the plugs will do the trick. This truck pulls my car and trailer beautifully and is perfect for taking the family on trips. I just wish gas was $0.50 a gallon, but oh well! Thanks for listening.

2wd diesel dually, wouldn't go with anything else. 30 gal tank, 400+ miles towing or non-towing. Excellent power, starts in all conditions, pulls anything. Comfortable ride, easy maintenance, great handling, powerful - what more could you ask for?
