Common 2003 Gmc Sierra 3500 problems
The GMC Sierra 3500, a heavy-duty pickup truck, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:
- Check Engine Light Due to Gas Cap Issue: One of the most common problems reported by owners is the check engine light turning on due to a loose or missing gas cap. This issue is relatively inexpensive to fix and can be easily resolved by tightening or replacing the gas cap.
- Drivetrain and Brake Problems: The 2004 GMC Sierra 3500 has been cited as having significant problems in the drivetrain and brake categories. The worst reported problem is a rotting driveline center bearing, which can cause transfer-case failure and is extremely costly to repair. Additionally, brake-line rust is a common issue, although it is less expensive to fix than the driveline problem. The 2004 model year received the worst ratings of all, with the 2015 model year also having a high number of overall complaints.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are common in the 2004 GMC Sierra 3500, with issues such as the check engine light coming on, problems with first and overdrive gears, and issues moving between gears. These problems can be related to age and use, and can be costly to repair. Other model years, such as 2000, 2005-07, 2013, and 2015, have also been reported to have transmission issues.
- Recall Issues: The GMC Sierra 3500 has had several recalls, including issues with tire and loading information labels listing inaccurate vehicle capacity weights, incomplete tire rim designations on certification tire labels, out-of-specification brake hydro-boost housing relief valve bores, and corroded tailgate support cables that can fracture and cause the tailgate to suddenly drop and strike the rear bumper. These issues can affect the safety and functionality of the vehicle, and should be addressed promptly.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical issues, such as problems with the speedometer, dash gauges, interior lights, and random locking or unlocking, are common in the GMC Sierra. These issues can range from mild to severe and can be costly to repair, depending on the source of the problem.
- Heating System Problems: The heating system in the GMC Sierra has been known to turn on randomly, even in the middle of summer. This issue can be inconvenient and uncomfortable for drivers, especially in extreme temperatures.
In conclusion, while the GMC Sierra 3500 is a powerful and capable heavy-duty pickup truck, it has had several common problems reported by owners. These issues range from relatively minor inconveniences, such as a loose gas cap, to more serious safety concerns, such as transmission and brake problems. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and to consider the cost and complexity of repairs when considering a used GMC Sierra 3500.

We recently upgraded to a heavier tow vehicle. As we have a horse ranch and haul trailers weighing between 12,000 to 15,000 pounds, we needed a SERIOUS tow vehicle, and we found just that. In our experience, neither Ford nor Dodge can match it. Although it can be a little hard riding due to its towing capacity, it is extremely quiet. The build quality is great, especially considering that it is a TRUCK.

The only issue I've had is that the left door speaker went bad. The one thing that bothers me is that the rear springs make a clunking noise when going over some bumps at lower speeds, even with just the camper on.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my truck that I bought at the end of July. I installed a Una-Goose ball hitch in the bed and I drive it every day. So far, I've put over 29,000 miles on it and I haven't had any reason to take it to the dealer yet. I actually do all my own general service! I've towed loads as heavy as 16,000 pounds without any problems. The transmission handles all the loads with ease thanks to the grade braking. The only issue I've had is keeping my speed down because there's so much power! I find myself going too fast sometimes. Anyway, thanks for listening to my story!

Truck looks great! The fuel mileage (non-towing) is not bad for a ton dually at 13 mpg. However, when towing, it's a different story. The average for this 6.0L engine is six (6) miles per gallon. Unfortunately, the tow mileage is not great and the truck is at its maximum performance on the interstate at 70mph. It seems to have no power left.
