1993 Gmc Safari problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-08-27
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: 1993 GMC SAFARI ALL WHEEL DRIVE 7-PASSENGER STANDARD WHEEL BASE VAN WITH 42" TORSION BAR FRONT SPRINGS AND 182,000 MILES. THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT TORSION SPRING BROKE INSIDE THE ADJUSTER SLEEVE AT THE FRAME CROSSMEMBER, DROPPING THE DRIVER'S SIDE ONTO THE FRAME. WHILE THIS FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, JUST THREE DAYS BEFORE I HAD USED THE VAN TO TAKE A TRIP WITH MY FAMILY ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH. A FAILURE HERE WOULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT THE ORIGINAL SPRING DESIGN WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE, AND THE UPDATED VERSION COULD ONLY BE SOLD IN PAIRS(BOTH SIDES). IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IF SUCH A CRITICAL COMPONENT AS THE FRONT SPRINGS ARE SO UNRELIABLE AS TO REQUIRE A COMPLETE RE-DESIGN, THAT A RECALL IS IN ORDER. *JB

- Date Of Incident: 2002-07-14
- VIN: 1GKEL19WOPB
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: EXCEPTIONALLY DANGEROUS SPONTANEOUS SHEARING OF FRONT LEFT TORSION BAR. GMC MUST KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM, BECAUSE THEY HAVE COMPLETELY REDESIGNED THE TORSION BARS, REQUIRING A MAJOR RETROFITTING (AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE) OF THE VAN'S CROSS FRAME MEMBER. FORTUNATELY FOR US, THIS MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE SUSPENSION BROKE WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED. OTHER REPORTS ON THE INTERNET DESCRIBE THE PART AS BREAKING WHILE DRIVING, INSTANTLY DROPPING THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CAR UNTIL THE TIRE HITS THE WHEEL WELL AND THROWING THE CAR VIOLENTLY TO THE LEFT.*AK

FIRESTONE DEALER HERE IN MCPHERSON WHERE THEY WERE PURCHASED WOULD NOT WARRENTY THE TIRE BUT WOULD GIVE A SMALL DISCOUNT. WE ELECTED TO KEEP THE TIRE AND NOT TAKE THE DISCOUNT. IT'S AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. WE HAVE OTHER TIRES OF SAME KIND AND TYPE IN WHICH THE STEEL CORDS ARE SHOWING READY TO BLOW SO WE REMOVED THEM ALSO, THEY WERE ON ANOTHER TRUCK OF OURS. WE ALSO HAVE ANOTHER TWO TIRES STILL AT THE DEALER WITH SIMILIAR PROBLEMS , THE DEALER HAS SENT IN A CLAIM TO FIRESTONE ON THEM FROM IN DEC. 2000. LUCKY FOR US WE ARE DOING VERY LITTLE HIGHWAY HIGH SPEED DRIVING. THE LAST BLOWOUT WOULD PROBABLY RESULTED IN A ACCIDENT IF WE HAD BEEN IN TRAFFIC.*AK (DOT NUMBER: VN11818087 TIRESIZE: LT245/75R1)

SUSPENSION,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-10-09
- VIN: 1GKDM19W4PB
- Components: SUSPENSION,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: WE FEEL THAT THIS VAN HAS HAD MORE THAN IT'S SHARE OF REPAIRS. IT HAS BEEN TOWED HOME FROM CAMBRIDGE MD TWICE. ONCE DUE TO ALTERNATOR FREEZING UP AND BREAKING BELT, AND ONCE FOR FAULTY IGNITION. IT HAS HAD 4 ALTERNATORS, AN AC SENSOR, COMPRESSOR AND ORAFICE. THE RT. FT. PASS. DOOR HAS HAD: NEW ELEC. MOTOR, WINDOW GLIDE, WEATHERSTRIPPING. I'VE HAD 3 EGR VALVES INSTALLED, AN "O" RING REPLACED, AND 3 MOTOR MOUNTS REPLACED. POWER STEERING PUMP AND HOSE REPLACED. I'VE HAD THE ROOF REPAINTED. AND SEVERAL SPOTS AROUND THE WINDOWS REPAINTED BLACK WHERE THE PAINT IS JUST PEELING OFF. THE STARTER WAS REPLACED. I'VE ALSO REPLACED THE VALVE SEAL, AND WATER PUMP. I'VE HAD RUST REPAIRED 3 TIMES ON THE INSIDE HINDGE AREA OF THE UPPER DUTCH DOOR. AND IN JUST LAST TWO MONTHS, I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE IDLER ARMS, PITMAN ARMS, AND FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM. THESE ARE JUST REPAIRS THAT I HAVE RECEIPTS FOR, MANY WERE DONE AT THE ORIGINAL DEALERSHIP WHEN NO RECEIPTS WERE ISSUED. I'VE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE GAS MILEAGE EVER SINCE WE'VE OWNED THE VAN. THE MANUFACTURER CLAIMED WE WOULD GET 15/20 MPG. WHEN I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALERS, I WAS TOLD THAT ONCE IT WAS BROKEN IN, GAS MILEAGE WOULD IMPROVE. WELL, I'VE GOT 100,00 MILES ON IT NOW, AND MY AVERAGE GAS MILEAGE IS 14 MPG. WE'RE LUCKY IF WE EVER SEE 18-20 MPG. WHEN WE GET 14 MPG, THAT'S A COMBINATION OF HIGHWAY, AND STOP AND GO DRIVING AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. I'M JUST GLAD THAT WE PURCHASED THE GEICO MECHANICAL BREAKDOWN INSURANCE WHEN IT WAS OFFERED.

A SIMILAR PROBLEM OCCURED LAST YEAR WITH A WIRE FOR THE DOME LIGHTS BEHIND THE ROOF CONSOLE. THAT WIRE WAS TOTALY EXPOSED AND SHORTING TO A CONSOLE MOUNT ATTACHED TO THE ROOF OF THE VEHICLE. I CONTACTED GM CANADA TODAY ABOUT THE POWER MIRROR WIRE PROBLEM AND THEY BASICALLY SAID THE PROBLEM WAS MINE TO FIX AND THEY WOULD KEEP A RECORD OF COOMPLAINT. I THINK THEY SHOULD PROTECT THE WIRES IN A CASING WHERE THAY KNOW OR OUGHT TO KNOW THAT THEY MAY COME INTO CONTACT WITH SHARP EDGE METAL SURFACES. - Summary: GM OF CANADA AND THE TRANSPORT CANADA HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS PROBLEM. GM RESPONSE IS THAT IF THEY DETECT A PROBLEM WITH A COMPONENT THEY WILL INVESTIGATE ALTHOUGH IT SOUNDED MORE LIKE A BRUSH OFF. THEY CLAIM THAT THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM AT THIS TIME WITH THE TORSION BAR FAILURE. THE PERSON I SPOKE WITH AT TRANSPORT CANADA WAS AWARE OF 5 OTHER REPORTED CASES OF TORSION BAR FAILURE ON THIS MODEL IN THE PAST TWO MONTHS. A GM DEALER CONTACTED IN HAMILTON ONTARIO HAD ANOTHER REQUEST FOR TORSION BAR REPLACEMENTS YESTERDAY. A LOCAL WRECKING YARD HAS A VAN IN THERE POSESSION WITH A BROKEN TORSION BAR. I FEEL THERE IS A PROBLEM HENCE MY CONTACT WITH NHTSA, TRANSPORT CANADA, AND GM CANADA. INDEED THE DESIGN OF THE TORSION BAR WAS CHANGED ON 1996 AND NEWER ASTRO/ SAFARI AWD VANS AND THE OLD STYLE TORSION BAR IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM GM CANADA. THIS MEANS THE WHOLE FRONT END NEEDS TO BE RETRO FITTED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE TO THE NEW STYLE TORSION BAR. I HAVE NOT RECIEVED A SATISFACTORY RESPONSE TO MY PROBLEM. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOUR ORGANIZATION MAY BE ABLE TO PROVIDE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

I love driving this vehicle! It's so much fun and gets great gas mileage. I highly recommend the van.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new and have put over 300,000 kms on it, and it's still my daily driver in 2022! I make sure to get regular oil changes every 5000km and change the tranny oil every 3 years. The only major expense I've had was replacing the front gear and transfer case. Overall, I'm really happy with how reliable this car has been!
-
We've had our GMC Safari for seven years and we still love it! The van is spacious and comfortable, but the only downside is the limited space for passengers' feet in the front. On the plus side, we really appreciate the built-in coolers in the back.
-
I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I'm glad your fiance is okay after the recent car accident. It's amazing to hear that the van he was driving saved his life. It's clear that your family has a special connection to that van, and I'm happy to hear that you plan on getting another one. It's great to see such loyalty to a brand like GMC. Take care!

I've had this car for 3 years now and I drive it 200 miles a day. Despite the cost of gas and maintenance, I've hardly had to put any money into it - just the occasional oil change and brake replacement. It was a fantastic purchase at only $1000 for 3 years of reliable service. Even with 250,000 miles on the clock, there isn't even a hint of an oil leak. I absolutely adore this car!

We purchased the vehicle when it was only 14 months old and had 43000 miles on it. It held up well for about 18 months, but unfortunately, we have had a lot of issues with it since then. Despite being 10 years old, it has not rusted, which is a positive. However, we have had to replace two engines, two transmissions, two complete A/C systems (front and back), and have had to make numerous other costly repairs. In fact, about 6 months after we bought it, Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide listed this vehicle at the top of their list of VEHICLES TO AVOID - and they were right! By the way, the engine is quite difficult to work on. I hope this information helps.
Jedidiah O'Keefe 2024-05-18
Generally nice - but: there was a secret GMC warranty on the paint which literally flake off after six years. GM denied responsibility claiming their secret warranty had expired and if the dealer didn't tell the customer (me) - too bad! The upshot - had to have the vehicle painted privately at my expense and now have EXTENSIVE RUST - something else that should never happen in this era of vehicle. Mechanically the vehicle has been fair, the rear A/C is a disaster - be sure to close off the coolant lines to the rear A/C - the rear A/C is not needed and you will otherwise have to add new freon EVERY Summer.

This van is amazing! It has over 202,000 miles and is still going strong, with no rust. It has been driven all over the place, from Canada to Florida, North Carolina to Connecticut, NYC to New Mexico, Kansas to Texas, and everywhere in between. Has it ever broken down? I don't think so! It's no wonder why GM sells more cars than Ford and DaimChrysBenz.

I have driven all over the States and Canada without any issues. Despite having driven 450000 km so far, the car has proven to be reliable. Although the rocker panels have rusted out and the back door handle has disintegrated, these are minor issues that do not affect the car's performance. While replacing the spark plugs can be challenging, it is a small price to pay for the pleasure of driving this car. Overall, I am confident in the car's durability and will continue to drive it for as long as possible.
