2003 Gmc Envoy xl problems
The GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV manufactured and marketed by General Motors for the 1998 to 2009 model years over two generations. Adopting a nameplate used by GM Canada, the Envoy was a rebadged variant of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X.
General Motors assembled the model line at its Moraine Assembly (Moraine, Ohio) and Oklahoma City Assembly (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Both facilities were closed by 2008, leading to the discontinuation of the model line. The Envoy was not directly replaced in the GMC model line as General Motors transitioned its smaller SUVs to unibody-chassis designs, introducing the smaller GMC Terrain and larger GMC Acadia.
First generation (1998–2000)
The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.
The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.
GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

- Summary: WHEN TRAILER IS CONNECTED TO THE 7 WAY TO BOX TRAILER CONNECTION TRAILER TAIL LAMPS DO NOT LIGHT CORRECTLY. BRAKE AND LEFT TURN SIGNAL LAMPS WORK PROPERLY. THE RIGHT TURN TRAILER LAMP IS PARTIALLY LIT WHEN TURN SIGNAL IS NOT ENGAGED. WHEN RIGHT TURN SIGNAL IS ENGAGED THE LEFT AND RIGHT TURN SIGNALS START FLASHING, BRAKE LIGHTS WORK NORMAL. THIS TURN SIGNAL ISSUE APPLY ONLY WHEN TRAILER ELECTRIC CIRCUIT IS PLUNGED IN TO THE TRAILER CIRCUIT. MY UNDERSTANDING THERE WAS A RECALL REGARDING THE FLASHER UNIT FOR THE 2003 ENVOY VEHICLE TURN SIGNALS. IT APPEARS THE TRAILER CIRCUIT HAS A SIMILAR ISSUE. BOTH THE VEHICLE AND TRAILER WORK OFF THE SAME FLASHER MODULE. SEE RECALL 05V198000. I PLAN TO REPLACE THE FLASHER UNIT TO CORRECT THIS DEFECT. IF YOU NEVER TOWED A TRAILER THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT BE DISCOVERED. WHEN TOWING A TRAILER DRIVER COULD BECOME CONFUSED WHEN YOUR MAKING A RIGHT TURN. THIS POTENTIALLY COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. THE TRAILER USED WAS A 5X10 FOOT SINGLE AXLE BOX TRAILER WITH FOUR WIRE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT. I HAD NO ISSUES WHEN TOWED WITH A DIFFERENT MAKE OF TRUCK. I DID REPLACED BOTH TRAILER TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY AND ISSUE DID NOT CHANGE.

- Summary: BULLETIN NO.:14423 DATE: NOVEMBER 2015 PART NUMBER: 15077622 TANK, FUEL (18.7 GAL.) THE ICV IS LOCATED ABOVE THE FULL FUEL LEVEL. A FRACTURED ICV COULD ALLOW FUEL VAPORS TO PASS THROUGH AND DROPLETS OF FUEL TO ACCUMULATE ON THE SIDE OF THE FUEL TANK AS IT PASSES OVER THE FRACTURE DURING REFUELING. IF THE ICV FRACTURES, THE VEHICLE'S SERVICE ENGINE SOON (SES) LIGHT MAY ILLUMINATE, AND YOU MAY NOTICE A FUEL ODOR AND/OR A FEW DROPS OF FUEL ON THE GROUND WHEN REFUELING THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS HAPPEN TO ME AND NOW MY TANK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH GMC ENVOY REGARDLESS OF YEAR OR HOW LONG THEY ARE IN SERVICE. THE COMPANY NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR POOR QUALITY OF PARTS ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN AND HAZARD WITH FUEL ODOR COMING INTO THE CAB OF THE VEHICLE AND SPILLING OUT WHEN GOING UP A HILL. BEING TOLD TO ONLY FILL MY GAS TANK UP HALF TO THREE QUARTERS FULL DUE TO THAT PART BEING BROKEN IS THE WRONG ANSWER. IN MOTION WHEN I SMELL GAS AND THEN NOTICE IT WHEN I FILL THE VEHICLE UP AND IT STARTED POURING OUT.

2003 Gmc Envoy xl recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2003 Gmc Envoy xl.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
- Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES HAVE A REAR SIDE CLOSURE LATCH THAT MAY NOT LATCH OR UNLATCH DUE TO CORROSION CAUSED BY ROAD SPLASH, SUCH AS WATER AND ROAD SALT. THESE VEHICLES WERE ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
- Consequence: IF THE DOOR IS NOT LATCHED PROPERLY AND IT GOES UNNOTICED, IT MAY OPEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. IF AN UNBELTED OCCUPANT FELL OUT OF THE VEHICLE, PERSONAL INJURIES COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SEAL ALONG THE LOWER PART OF THE ROCKER PANEL TO PREVENT INTRUSION OF CORROSIVE MATERIAL, AND INSPECT THE REAR SIDE CLOSURE LATCHES. FUNCTIONAL LATCHES WILL BE CLEANED AND LUBRICATED. NON-FUNCTIONING LATCHES WILL BE REPLACED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 24, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, OR ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, VIBRATION AND HEAT MAY CAUSE THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP BULB TO LOOSEN IN ITS SOCKET. IF THIS OCCURS, THE BULB MAY FLICKER AND EVENTUALLY BECOME INOPERATIVE.
- Consequence: AN INOPERATIVE BRAKE LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION OF STOPPING TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES, AND AN INOPERATIVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION TO TURN TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES. BOTH OF THESE FAILURES CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP ASSEMBLIES, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THEM. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER
- Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES HAVE WINDSHIELD WIPER SYSTEMS THAT WILL NOT TURN ON, CEASE OPERATION WHILE IN USE, FAIL TO TURN OFF/ON BY THEMSELVES (MOISTURE SENSITIVE WIPER SYSTEM), OR HAVE CONTINUOUS WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP OPERATION BECAUSE THE PRESENCE OF WATER WITHIN THE WIPER MODULES CAN EITHER CAUSE A SHORT CIRCUIT OR CAN LEAD TO THE CORROSION OF COMPONENTS WITHIN THE MODULE.
- Consequence: DEPENDING ON THE OCCURRENCE AND WEATHER SITUATION, DRIVER VISIBILITY COULD BE REDUCED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL COVER THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MODULE VENT HOLE WITH A PATCH. ALSO, THE WIPER MOTOR, CIRCUIT BOARD, AND ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR WILL BE INSPECTED TO SIGNS OF WATER INTRUSION AND/OR CORROSION AND BE REPLACED AS REQUIRED. THE RECALL BEGAN JULY 6, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.

I absolutely adore this truck! I bought it back in 2008 with only 58k miles on it, and now it has just about 169k. It gets an estimated 15 miles per gallon in town, and when I take my family and luggage on the freeway at 70mph, it pulls an impressive 21-22mpg on average. It runs and rides like a dream! I make sure to stay on top of all maintenance, including fluids, S-belt, brakes pads & rotors, coil overs, shocks, fuel filter, ball joints & driver front wheel bearing (which I consider part of maintenance). The only non-maintenance repairs I've had to make were replacing the plastic upper molding on the rear door, the power steering pump (which was leaking from the reservoir but did not fail), the tensioner pulley, and the water pump - all just this year in 2014. I really can't say enough good things about this truck. In my opinion, it's one of the best SUVs ever built!
-
I am the second owner of this Envoy, and I have had it for the last 4 years. I absolutely love it! I have never felt this way about a car before. It rides smoothly, is incredibly quiet, and shifts like a dream. It also makes tight car-like U-turns, has plenty of interior room, and nice leg room. It currently has 86,000 miles on it. I have had to replace the fan clutch, which cost me $600, the armrest, which was my fault and cost $70, and the driveline, which is the part that causes your vehicle to shift into gear, and cost $200. Despite these minor issues, it has been a dream to ride and drive. This is a vehicle that you want to take care of because you want it to last forever!
-
Your car rides like a Cadillac and has a great engine!
-
This is by far the best SUV I have ever owned. Although I haven't had a chance to tow anything with it yet, it will definitely get a workout in the spring with the boat and camper.
-
The SLE XL is not a suitable replacement for my minivan, as it is difficult to tumble the second row with all the car seats. However, I am optimistic that it will be ideal in a few years. Despite my previous negative experience with GM products, I am enjoying driving it and hoping for the best.

City driving can be quite challenging, especially when it comes to fuel efficiency. I understand your frustration with the gas mileage of your six-cylinder engine, which is currently at 12.5 mpg using premium fuel. It's not ideal, especially if you're driving conservatively. Additionally, you mentioned that your vehicle 'squeaks' which can be quite bothersome. Despite these issues, I'm glad to hear that you find your vehicle beautiful. I hope that the remainder of your lease goes smoothly.

During a snowstorm with my 2 and 4-year-old kids, I discovered that my brand new, big, heavy car did not have 4WD. Thankfully, we were able to avoid any accidents. We have taken the car to be fixed, but unfortunately, the part will not be available until mid-February. It seems that this is a common issue with this car. Living in NJ, this means that I will not have a car if it snows. However, I am remaining positive and hopeful that everything will work out. I received a survey asking about what doesn't work, and I will be sure to provide my feedback. Thank you for your understanding.
