The GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV manufactured and marketed by General Motors for the 1998 to 2009 model years over two generations. Adopting a nameplate used by GM Canada, the Envoy was a rebadged variant of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X.
General Motors assembled the model line at its Moraine Assembly (Moraine, Ohio) and Oklahoma City Assembly (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Both facilities were closed by 2008, leading to the discontinuation of the model line. The Envoy was not directly replaced in the GMC model line as General Motors transitioned its smaller SUVs to unibody-chassis designs, introducing the smaller GMC Terrain and larger GMC Acadia.
First generation (1998–2000)
The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.
The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.
GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

- Summary: I bought a 2003 GMC Envoy 3/23/24. The main frame and sub-frame have extensive rot, and is unsafe to drive. It is available to inspect. They disguised frame damage and sold me an unsafe vehicle. I brought the car in to have the ac repaired in August 2024 and when they put it up on the lift that's when they saw the damage. This was Rogers Automotive in Westport MA. They told me at that time that it is unsafe to drive. It has not been inspected by any other parties at this time. We had no idea it was damaged, Rogers said it was sprayed to try to hide the damage.

- Summary: Headlight's,taillight's,turn signals stop working whenever they want.It's pretty scary to lose your headlight's when your driving at night.There's nothing i can do about it,except to sit wherever it happend and wait for them to come back on.My wife was following me one day and told me my brakelight's and turn signal stopped working and started to work again,she said this happened a couple time's at the same red light.There a couple of thing's (electrical)inside the vehicle that don't work anymore but i really dont care about them.To get the odometer to work i have to knock pretty hard on the plastic cover that cover's the instrument cluster,sometimes it stay's on,most of the time it wont stay on.The DIC (driver control center) doesn't work anymore.I cant even get to it.The speakers on the left side of the vehicle dont work anymore.I thought i would tell you about the inside also because it could be part of the problem.All of this happened when i was driving home from my daughter's two night's ago.I bought this vehicle about three or four's year's ago,and i had no problem's with it untill the other night.The person i bought it from is a good friend of mine.He said he never had a problem with it,plus i have been in this vehicle countless times,that's why i bought it. Fluid may enter into the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board, causing window switches to become inoperative. Previously, the affected vehicles may have had their master power window switch module treated with a protective coating, instead of having it replaced.
- Consequence: The protective coating may not eliminate the risk that the circuit board could short and result in a fire, even while the vehicle is unattended.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a new driver's door switch module, free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2015. Congratulations on your new vehicle! It's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with it so far. The third row seat is a fantastic extra and it's wonderful that you have so much space inside. The larger V8 engine really helps with pickup and performance, which must make driving it a real pleasure. It's a shame that the gas mileage isn't better, but it sounds like you were aware of this when you purchased the SUV. It's great that you have enough room for 2 adults, one child, 3 dogs, and luggage - that's quite an impressive feat! The engine is very powerful and it accelerates smoothly, while also handling and driving like a car. Additionally, it has the capacity and towing capability of a true SUV. If you're looking for a vehicle with great navigation capability, the Acura MDX might be a better option. However, if you're looking for a more affordable option, the Honda Pilot is similar and priced lower. The Toyota Sequoia is more spacious, but it comes at a higher cost and lower fuel efficiency. Lastly, while the Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango are also 7-seater SUVs, their designs may seem a bit dated compared to the Envoy. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on the Envoy XL SLT w/4WD. I have to say, the ride is exceptionally smooth and the handling is good, although not quite X5 caliber. The 270 HP V-6 pulls strong and steady without hesitation, which is great. The only issue I've had is an occasional squeak on rough roads, but I'm not sure if it's from a seat or the chassis. Other than that, the vehicle has exceeded my expectations, except for fuel economy. It's rated 15 City and 20 Hwy, but so far I'm only getting 13/19. I'm hoping that will improve with break-in (only 600 miles). I considered the Acura MDX, Sequoia, and Mountaineer, but I'm happy with my choice and the value for the price paid. Although I still worry about eventual resale value, I'm confident that I made the right decision.

I absolutely adore this truck! I bought it back in 2008 with only 58k miles on it, and now it has just about 169k. It gets an estimated 15 miles per gallon in town, and when I take my family and luggage on the freeway at 70mph, it pulls an impressive 21-22mpg on average. It runs and rides like a dream! I make sure to stay on top of all maintenance, including fluids, S-belt, brakes pads & rotors, coil overs, shocks, fuel filter, ball joints & driver front wheel bearing (which I consider part of maintenance). The only non-maintenance repairs I've had to make were replacing the plastic upper molding on the rear door, the power steering pump (which was leaking from the reservoir but did not fail), the tensioner pulley, and the water pump - all just this year in 2014. I really can't say enough good things about this truck. In my opinion, it's one of the best SUVs ever built!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our family truck. For the first year and a half, it was wonderful and we had no problems at all. However, we did start experiencing some issues after that. The brake lights would go out frequently due to some wiring issues, but thankfully it was eventually recalled. Unfortunately, we're now starting to see some problems under the hood that are quite expensive to fix. Overall, the truck was great for that first year, but it might be a good idea to consider trading it in now. That being said, it's still a great vehicle despite the issues we've had. I was hoping to get at least five years out of it, but it seems like it might not be the best choice for a long-term investment. Thanks for listening!

There are some things that I really appreciate about this vehicle and others that are extremely frustrating/disappointing. After the warranty was up, it's been problem after problem with many parts of the vehicle. However, the engine has always performed beautifully for me. It's got a lot of power and cruises very comfortably, shifts smoothly and handles well. It's heavier weight (7-passenger trim), low center of gravity and 4WD make it extremely adept at getting around on snowy roads, which has been a huge positive as I live in an area with a lot of lake-effect snow every winter. It's reliably started easy 100% of the time as a daily driver. If you can snag one for a few grand, it's definitely a good vehicle for a teen or an everyday get from point A to point B in wintery conditions. However, it's tough to ignore the fact that there have been some issues with the vehicle's comfort aspects. Despite this, it's still a reliable vehicle that will get you where you need to go.

I recently decided to upgrade from a minivan to an SUV and ultimately chose the Envoy XL. From the moment I test drove it, I knew it was the perfect vehicle for me. However, I have experienced some issues with my Envoy XL since purchasing it, despite GMC's professional grade claim. While I appreciate the ride, comfort, and convenience it offers, I have had to deal with electrical problems, air conditioning failure (twice), and annoying squeaking. I am hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon.

The vehicle experienced several issues within two weeks of purchase, including backfiring on engine start up and blue smoke emission. The electronic control module and the entire engine had to be replaced. Additionally, load balancers, heat and cooling module, signal light indicator, and rear hatch lock assembly required repairs. Currently, there is an engine ticking and loss of power issue that is attributed to a lifter problem, which I believe should be addressed as a GMC recall instead of just a service bulletin notice.
