Gmc Envoy xl problems
The GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV manufactured and marketed by General Motors for the 1998 to 2009 model years over two generations. Adopting a nameplate used by GM Canada, the Envoy was a rebadged variant of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X.
General Motors assembled the model line at its Moraine Assembly (Moraine, Ohio) and Oklahoma City Assembly (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Both facilities were closed by 2008, leading to the discontinuation of the model line. The Envoy was not directly replaced in the GMC model line as General Motors transitioned its smaller SUVs to unibody-chassis designs, introducing the smaller GMC Terrain and larger GMC Acadia.
First generation (1998–2000)
The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.
The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.
GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 12 recalls for different components of the Gmc Envoy xl.You can explore the year of the Volkswagen Jetta you are interested in by selecting it from the list.
- Model: Gmc Envoy xl 2006
- Report Received Date: 2015-09-24
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy vehicles, and 2006 GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT vehicles. Fluid may enter into the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board, causing window switches to become inoperative. Previously, the affected vehicles may have had their master power window switch module treated with a protective coating, instead of having it replaced.
- Consequence: The protective coating may not eliminate the risk that the circuit board could short and result in a fire, even while the vehicle is unattended.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a new driver's door switch module, free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2015. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15700.
- Model: Gmc Envoy xl 2006
- Report Received Date: 2015-08-14
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
- Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.
- Model: Gmc Envoy xl 2006
- Report Received Date: 2014-07-02
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 SAAB 9-7x; 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL; and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier and Isuzu Ascender vehicles. Fluid may enter the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board. A short may cause the power door lock and power window switches to function intermittently or become inoperative. The short may also cause overheating, which could melt components of the door module, producing odor, smoke, or a fire.
- Consequence: A short in the circuit board could lead to a fire, increasing the risk of personal injury. A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the part number on the door module, and install a new door module if necessary, free of charge. Parts for the remedy are not currently available. An interim letter was mailed to owners in August 2014. A second owner letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-955-9007 (SAAB), and 1-800-255-6727 (Isuzu). GM's number for this recall is 14309. NOTE: This recall provides a new remedy for all vehicles covered by recall 13V-248. Great vehicle with great leg room in 3rd seat. The 4wd sometimes comes on with the switch in 2wd and they have replaced the switch once already. Has been very dependable with adequate power, nice luxury, and good handling. I will definitely look to buy another GMC before anything else, including imports.

The Envoy XL is truly unbeatable. Whether you need to seat seven or just two with plenty of cargo space, it has got you covered with over 100 cubic feet of room. Plus, you can easily fit four men and their golf clubs without any hassle.

I have a 2004 Envoy XL and I use it to take my kids and their friends to various sports games and events. I also take it on a 500-mile trip to my grandma's house twice a year. I really enjoy the ride on long trips, even though it's not a Porsche but an SUV, so the steering can be a bit numb. Unfortunately, I've recently hit 60K miles, 5 years later, and the transmission is slipping. My neighbor had the same issue with her 2005 Envoy at only 38K miles. It's frustrating that American car builders can't seem to make a reliable transmission. In the past, the Chevys I've owned lasted at least until 100K miles before the transmission died. On the other hand, Nissans and Hondas can go 200K miles without any issues. I'll get the GMC fixed and keep it for a few more years, but I'm considering Japanese or German cars for my next vehicle.

This vehicle is the best. GM really did their homework on this one. It drives smoothly, rides like a Cadillac, and the 270 hp engine gives you the performance of a sedan. All while still having powerful towing capabilities and seven passenger seating.

I bought my 2002 GMC Envoy four years ago when it had only 43k miles on it. Since then, I have only done basic maintenance such as changing the oil, brakes, and tires, and occasionally washing it. This SUV has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I wonder how other people drive and maintain their cars? If you take it easy on the gas, this SUV will take care of you. Even after driving it for 188,468 miles, it still runs as smoothly as butter. It's hard to believe that it's been eight years since I bought it, and it still runs like new. I think it's time to buy a new car and pass this one down to my daughter.
Mekhi Heidenreich 2025-11-08

I strongly resent having bought this car. In just one year, the car has been in the service department 7 times for various issues such as wipers that stopped working, the air conditioning breaking down twice, the car turning off by itself, and rear noise. The transmission or differential joints were replaced, the fan clutch was replaced, and there was terrible wind noise in the vehicle. Additionally, there was a cracking noise on the steering front end, which was taken to the dealer twice for repair. Overall, the quality of this vehicle is very poor. GM could have done a much better job.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Envoy XL that I bought back in August of 2002. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the shop 9 times since then. I've had the A/C compressor replaced twice, the power steering pump replaced once, the rear shock replaced, the On-Star system repaired, and the cracked fuel tack replaced at only 5k miles. Needless to say, I'm feeling pretty frustrated with GMC and this truck. I used to drive a 4Runner and I don't think I'll be buying a GMC again anytime soon. It's a shame because they market themselves as professional grade, but my experience has been far from that. Thanks for listening to me vent!
Chesley Braun 2025-11-02
Vehicle year: 2004
I purchased this SUV brand new in 2004 for $35,000. Unfortunately, it has not held its value and I am now only able to sell it for around $2,000. I have had to invest in some repairs, including an $800 rear AC repair and a $250 door switch replacement (plus an additional $50 for programming). The oil gauge is also not functioning properly. I have already replaced the motor mounts, thermostat, alternator, and other parts for a total cost of around $1,300. Additionally, the latch on the glove compartment has fallen off. I am frustrated that I now need a new engine, which will be a significant expense, but I have already invested so much in this SUV that I feel I have no other choice. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this SUV as it has not been made to a high standard. Despite only having 150k miles on the engine, it seems that it is already time for a new one.

Although I initially enjoyed my Envoy SLT, I have unfortunately experienced several issues with the heated seats, power mirrors, and windshield wipers. However, I am confident that these issues are not representative of the professional grade quality advertised in the commercials. I am currently considering trading in my Envoy for a different vehicle, but I hope that others have had better experiences with theirs. It is possible that my vehicle has some unique issues that need to be addressed.
