The GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV manufactured and marketed by General Motors for the 1998 to 2009 model years over two generations. Adopting a nameplate used by GM Canada, the Envoy was a rebadged variant of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X.
General Motors assembled the model line at its Moraine Assembly (Moraine, Ohio) and Oklahoma City Assembly (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Both facilities were closed by 2008, leading to the discontinuation of the model line. The Envoy was not directly replaced in the GMC model line as General Motors transitioned its smaller SUVs to unibody-chassis designs, introducing the smaller GMC Terrain and larger GMC Acadia.
First generation (1998–2000)
The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.
The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.
GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

- Summary: I bought a 2003 GMC Envoy 3/23/24. The main frame and sub-frame have extensive rot, and is unsafe to drive. It is available to inspect. They disguised frame damage and sold me an unsafe vehicle. I brought the car in to have the ac repaired in August 2024 and when they put it up on the lift that's when they saw the damage. This was Rogers Automotive in Westport MA. They told me at that time that it is unsafe to drive. It has not been inspected by any other parties at this time. We had no idea it was damaged, Rogers said it was sprayed to try to hide the damage.

- Summary: Headlight's,taillight's,turn signals stop working whenever they want.It's pretty scary to lose your headlight's when your driving at night.There's nothing i can do about it,except to sit wherever it happend and wait for them to come back on.My wife was following me one day and told me my brakelight's and turn signal stopped working and started to work again,she said this happened a couple time's at the same red light.There a couple of thing's (electrical)inside the vehicle that don't work anymore but i really dont care about them.To get the odometer to work i have to knock pretty hard on the plastic cover that cover's the instrument cluster,sometimes it stay's on,most of the time it wont stay on.The DIC (driver control center) doesn't work anymore.I cant even get to it.The speakers on the left side of the vehicle dont work anymore.I thought i would tell you about the inside also because it could be part of the problem.All of this happened when i was driving home from my daughter's two night's ago.I bought this vehicle about three or four's year's ago,and i had no problem's with it untill the other night.The person i bought it from is a good friend of mine.He said he never had a problem with it,plus i have been in this vehicle countless times,that's why i bought it. Fluid may enter into the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board, causing window switches to become inoperative. Previously, the affected vehicles may have had their master power window switch module treated with a protective coating, instead of having it replaced.
- Consequence: The protective coating may not eliminate the risk that the circuit board could short and result in a fire, even while the vehicle is unattended.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a new driver's door switch module, free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2015. This is by far the best SUV I have ever owned. Although I haven't had a chance to tow anything with it yet, it will definitely get a workout in the spring with the boat and camper.

The SLE XL is not a suitable replacement for my minivan, as it is difficult to tumble the second row with all the car seats. However, I am optimistic that it will be ideal in a few years. Despite my previous negative experience with GM products, I am enjoying driving it and hoping for the best.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Envoy XL. I absolutely love it! It has been so versatile and has helped me haul so many things, including 7 passengers. I've only had to take it back to the dealer twice, and one of those times was just for a minor cosmetic issue. Unfortunately, it's time for me to get a new vehicle (I like to switch every 7 years before my GM credit card dollars expire), but I'm having trouble finding a replacement that I like as much as my Envoy XL. The Acadia is the closest option, but I'm not a fan of the back glass not opening. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

I decided to upgrade to the SLT and wanted the DVD option, but it was no longer available. Instead, I opted for the moon roof and had the DVD installed (I have 3 kids). I have owned it for a month now, and I must say, it rides like a Cadillac. This is my first experience with trucks, and I was pleasantly surprised.

I test drove all SUVs that could carry 6+ passengers and drag at least 5,500 lbs. In my opinion, this is the best overall vehicle for the money. The soft suspension tuning makes it ride extremely smooth on the road, which is where it will stay for most of its life. The big V-8 engine is great, although the fuel economy is mediocre. I really appreciate the user selectable 2WD or 4WD and self-leveling suspension in the back. The interior quality is good too. It's worth noting that getting the same vehicle in a foreign manufacturer would cost $10k more, with a dubious return on that investment.

The Envoy XL was chosen for its smooth ride and 7 seating capability. Although initial quality was a disappointment, with required repairs to the front differential kit, audio tuner, and mirror auto-dimming before 10K miles, no other problems have occurred since. While the dealer was moderately helpful, they were a real pain when it came to the differential problem. Overall, I am uncertain if I would purchase this vehicle again.

City driving can be quite challenging, especially when it comes to fuel efficiency. I understand your frustration with the gas mileage of your six-cylinder engine, which is currently at 12.5 mpg using premium fuel. It's not ideal, especially if you're driving conservatively. Additionally, you mentioned that your vehicle 'squeaks' which can be quite bothersome. Despite these issues, I'm glad to hear that you find your vehicle beautiful. In my experience, I have found that the dealerships have not been as committed to the product and the service has been less than satisfactory. However, I have found that Toyota (Lexus) and Honda (Acura) have been reliable choices for me and I plan on sticking with them for the foreseeable future. Thank you for considering my thoughts.

The Envoy sits up higher than most, which is a plus. I found that it has a smooth ride and handles quite nicely on rougher roads. On snow and slush, it controls really well, even with the extra length in the XL model. I owned an Astek for 3 years and loved the way it handled, but I believe the Envoy is going to be everything and more for the money.

During a snowstorm with my 2 and 4-year-old kids, I discovered that my brand new, big, heavy car did not have 4WD. Thankfully, we were able to avoid any accidents. We have taken the car to be fixed, but unfortunately, the part will not be available until mid-February. It seems that this is a common issue with this car. Living in NJ, this means that I will not have a car if it snows. However, I am remaining positive and hopeful that everything will work out.
