The Hyundai Excel (Korean: 현대 엑셀), also known as the Hyundai Pony, Hyundai Pony Excel, Hyundai Presto, Mitsubishi Precis, Hyundai X2 and Hyundai XL, is an automobile which was produced by Hyundai Motor Company from 1985 to 1999. It was the first front-wheel drive car produced by the South Korean manufacturer. The Excel range replaced the rear-wheel-drive Hyundai Pony.

Background

The Excel was based on the second generation of the Mitsubishi Mirage, but it received its own sheet metal design by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The Excel was available in three- or five-door hatchback and four-door sedan models. The Excel was the first Hyundai car to be exported to the United States.

The Excel was available with either a manual or automatic transmission mated to a four-cylinder engine aspirated by a carburetor or fuel injection system, depending on market and model year.

Originally, the Excel was supposed to be replaced by the Elantra in 1990, but it ended up being sold for four more years until being replaced by the Hyundai Accent in the model year 1995. From 1990, there was a coupé variant called the Hyundai Scoupe, which was replaced by the Hyundai Coupé in 1996.

Common 1994 Hyundai Excel problems

The 1994 Hyundai Excel is a popular vehicle among budget-conscious consumers due to its improved design and features compared to previous years. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems based on complaints from owners.

One of the most common engine issues reported by Hyundai Excel owners is engine misfire or stalling. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, such as a malfunctioning fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, or a faulty ignition coil. Drivers have reported that the engine would stall or fail to start altogether, while others experienced issues with the engine misfiring or running rough.

Another issue with the 1994 Hyundai Excel is with the brake system. Drivers have reported that the brakes felt spongy or unresponsive, which could lead to difficulty stopping the vehicle. This was often caused by worn out brake pads, a damaged brake rotor, or a malfunctioning brake caliper.

Electrical problems were also a common issue with the 1994 Hyundai Excel. Drivers reported issues with the dashboard lights not turning on, the radio not working, and the power windows not functioning properly. These issues were often caused by a faulty alternator, a damaged battery, or a malfunctioning power window motor.

Rust and corrosion were still common issues with the 1994 Hyundai Excel. The paint would bubble and peel, and the body would rust, particularly around the wheel wells and undercarriage. To address these issues, it's important to stay on top of regular maintenance and address any issues as soon as they arise. Regular brake inspections, oil changes, and fuel system cleanings can help prevent brake and engine issues. Rust and corrosion can be prevented by washing the vehicle regularly and applying protective coatings to the body.

Fuel system issues were also a common problem with the 1994 Hyundai Excel. The fuel pump and fuel filter could become clogged, leading to poor performance and potential engine damage. In some cases, the fuel tank itself could also rust or corrode, leading to leaks or other issues.

Despite these common issues, the 1994 Hyundai Excel remains a reliable and affordable vehicle for those on a budget. With proper maintenance and repairs, many Excel owners are able to keep their vehicles running smoothly for years to come.

Negative 1994 Hyundai Excel car reviews

  1. Nelson Koepp 2024-09-07

Your car is running well and there are no issues with the engine.

  2. Keyon Nolan 2024-03-16

This car has been a great companion to me! The only downside is the cost of replacement parts, but luckily they are rarely needed due to the car's reliability.

  3. Brooks Connelly 2024-01-10

My Mom bought this car when it was already a few years old and I have since inherited it. I have never had it in the shop for more than normal maintenance. If you're looking for a reliable vehicle to get where you're going, you're in the right spot. Although the suspension is a little suspect and the lack of power steering can get a little annoying, this car is very convenient for driving in Boston. It's small, just zippy enough, and you won't need to make many visits to the gas station. If you enjoy driving, this may not be the car for you, but if you're looking for a practical and dependable ride, you'll be pleased with this one.

Positive 1994 Hyundai Excel car reviews

  1. Carlos Fadel 2024-11-23

I'm so glad to hear that you've had excellent service out of this car! It sounds like you've mostly been doing town driving, going to work, church, and back home.

  2. Presley Shanahan 2024-11-02

This is a great car! It's very dependable - it starts right up, even in the winter. The small car and manual transmission make it fun to drive, and the gas bill and tire replacements are cheap. It always passes emissions, and the hatchback provides a surprisingly large amount of storage space (which was a necessity for my college days!). If you change the oil every 3K miles, it might go forever!

  3. Charles Borer 2024-09-02

It's a pleasure driving this vehicle. I have never experienced any trouble of any sort. It's very economical on gas and other fuel.

  4. Kennith Jacobson 2024-08-25

This car is amazing! Your parents bought it for you when you were in high school back in 2006, and it only had 94k on it. Your mom wishes she had it because of the fuel economy! The only issue you've had is that the timing belt needs to be replaced, and she sometimes stalls if you turn it off and on repetitively, like when you're going somewhere for 5 minutes or getting gas. She also has a little bit of rust on her.

  5. Joaquin Kuhlman 2024-08-08

What a great car! It was a gift from my parents when I was in high school and it has been with me ever since. It was meant to be a cheap car to get me through college, but it has exceeded all expectations. Even after four years of college in upstate NY, it never let me down. Now, my husband uses it to commute 90 miles a day and it's still going strong. We only had one issue with the water pump at 90,000 miles, but it was an easy $400 fix and we've been running smoothly ever since. We couldn't be happier with this car!
