The Mercury Monterey is a series of full-size cars that were manufactured and marketed by the Mercury division of Ford from 1950 to 1974. Deriving its name from Monterey Bay, the initial Mercury Monterey served as the top-of-the-line two-door sedan model for 1950 and 1951 to compete with the hardtop models of Oldsmobile and Buick. It came with a vinyl roof covering, upgraded upholstery, and other features. The hardtop was introduced for 1952. During its production, the Monterey would be offered in multiple body styles, ranging from coupes, convertibles, sedans, hardtops, and station wagons.
Over its 22 years of production, the Monterey served variously as the flagship, mid-range, and entry-level offering of the full-size Mercury product range. The only Mercury nameplate to be in continuous production throughout the 1960s, the Monterey was positioned above the Medalist, Custom, and Meteor; later, it was positioned below the Turnpike Cruiser, Montclair, Park Lane, and finally the Marquis.
Following the 1974 model year, Mercury discontinued the Monterey, consolidating its full-size range down to the Marquis and Colony Park station wagon. For 2004, the Monterey nameplate was revived, becoming the counterpart of the Ford Freestar minivan; it was produced through the 2007 model year.

- Summary: Ford is recalling certain model year 2004-2007 Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles manufactured from March 24, 2003, through November 7, 2006, equipped with a third row seat and originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The third row stowable seat can experience corrosion and structural degradation at the seat anchor mechanism mounted to the rear wheel wells. As a result of the corrosion, the third row seat may not fully latch into its seating position.
- Consequence: In the event that the vehicle is crashed into from the rear, an unlatched seat may increase the risk of personal injury.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new third row seat latch striker mounting brackets, free of charge. The recall began on March 28, 2013. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

DUE TO INCORRECT DESIGN, THE QUICK CONNECTORS MAY NOT FULLY SEAT WITH THE TUBE INTERFACE, EVEN THOUGH THE PERSON MAKING THE CONNECTION MAY BELIEVE THAT THE QUICK CONNECTOR IS FULLY ATTACHED.
- Consequence: FAILURE OF THIS CONNECTION COULD LEAD TO FUEL SPILLAGE AND, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A FIRE COULD OCCUR.

The workers at the plant in Canada are incredibly detail-oriented and have done an excellent job with quality.

I have owned both Dodge and Ford minivans in the past. This Mercury is a great improvement over my previous Ford Windstar vans and a world of difference over the Dodge, which was the worst vehicle I have ever owned. While my friends prefer the new Honda's and Toyota minivans, I find them way too expensive. The Honda is far noisier, the power is not as good as the Mercury, and the mileage is about the same. Also, I was able to buy the Mercury for over $3000 less with the same features as the Honda. I, for one, cannot justify the higher prices for the Honda and Toyota.

In my opinion, the Monterey is the best van out there. It is loaded with luxury features and has a powerful 4.2L V6. If you're looking for a great van, I highly recommend the Monterey.

Gorgeous interior, well thought out. My husband and I both love the seat coolers as well as heaters. The power adjustable pedals are great for me since I am only 5'4. The memory settings for the pedals, seat, and mirrors are very convenient. Overall, we absolutely love this van and will be sad to see it go when our lease is up. We will be hard-pressed to find something comparable with all of the extras this van offers. The fuel economy is about what I expected from a minivan. It drives excellently and is very smooth...

We purchased our Mercury in March 2007 for a great price of 22K. It was a steal! As a handicapped individual, I needed it to be converted (VMI) to accommodate my power wheelchair, and the Mercury was perfect for the job. The right side door is the widest I've seen at 33 inches, which makes it easy for me and my 600+ lb powerchair to get in and out. The 4.2L engine provides plenty of power and a smooth ride. The dual air conditioning is a lifesaver in the 110-degree Phoenix heat! My wife loves the front and rear sensors, and we both appreciate the smooth ride. While it's not a Mustang, the Mercury performs and handles well for a minivan. The only downside is the mileage, which is around 15-16 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

It seems like the car has some room for improvement. The gas mileage (13 mpg city) is not great and the cup holder for the driver is poorly placed. The center console could also be better designed. The 3rd row seat is quite close to the floor and is only suitable for small children, although even a small adult could sit back there with their knees up. Overall, there are some areas that could be improved, but it's still a decent car.
