The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 2023 Ford F-350 sd problems

The Ford F-350 Super Duty is a popular choice for those who need a heavy-duty truck for towing and hauling. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by F-350 owners:

  1. Death Wobble: This is a phenomenon where the steering wheel shakes violently, usually at higher speeds or when hitting a bump. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including loose steering components, worn-out suspension parts, or unbalanced tires. In some cases, it can be fixed by replacing the steering stabilizer, but in more severe cases, it may require a more extensive suspension overhaul.
  2. Leaf Spring Issues: The leaf springs on the F-350 are responsible for supporting the weight of the truck and any cargo it may be carrying. Over time, they can sag or break, leading to a decrease in ride height and stability. This can be a safety issue, especially when towing or hauling heavy loads.
  3. Steering Wheel Sticking and Locking: Some F-350 owners have reported issues with the steering wheel sticking or locking up, especially when turning at low speeds. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty steering column or a problem with the power steering system.
  4. Power Steering Issues: The power steering system on the F-350 can be prone to leaks or failures, leading to a loss of power assist and making the truck difficult to steer. This can be caused by worn-out components, leaks in the power steering lines, or a faulty pump.
  5. Rear Wide Axle Issues: The rear wide axle on the F-350 is designed to provide extra strength and durability for towing and hauling. However, it can be prone to issues such as worn-out bearings or broken axle shafts.
  6. Driveshaft Issues: The driveshaft on the F-350 can be prone to vibration or failure, especially when towing or hauling heavy loads. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out u-joints, a misaligned driveshaft, or a faulty differential.
  7. Transmission Lurching Issues: Some F-350 owners have reported issues with the transmission lurching or slipping, especially when shifting gears. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid, a faulty torque converter, or a problem with the transmission control module.
  8. Transmission Calibration Issues: The transmission on the F-350 can be prone to calibration issues, especially when towing or hauling heavy loads. This can cause the transmission to shift roughly or hesitate, leading to a decrease in performance and fuel efficiency.
  9. Unintended Rollaway Issues: Some F-350 owners have reported issues with the vehicle rolling away unexpectedly, especially when parked on an incline. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty parking brake or a problem with the transmission.
  10. Loose Steering: The steering on the F-350 can be prone to looseness or slop, especially when driving at high speeds or towing heavy loads. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out steering components or a problem with the power steering system.
  11. PTO Pressure Oil Leaks: The PTO (Power Take-Off) system on the F-350 can be prone to oil leaks, especially in older models. This can lead to a loss of power and a decrease in performance.
  12. Spark Plug Issues: The spark plugs on the F-350 can be prone to fouling or failure, leading to a loss of power and a decrease in fuel efficiency. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty ignition system or a problem with the fuel injectors.
  13. Turbocharger Issues: The turbocharger on the F-350 can be prone to failure or malfunction, especially in high-mileage vehicles. This can lead to a loss of power and a decrease in performance.
  14. Engine Block Heater Issues: The engine block heater on the F-350 can be prone to failure or malfunction, especially in cold weather. This can lead to a difficult start or a no-start condition.
  15. Squeaky Cabin: Some F-350 owners have reported issues with squeaks or rattles in the cabin, especially when driving on rough roads or at high speeds. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including loose trim pieces or worn-out suspension components.

It's important to note that not all F-350s will experience these issues, and many can go thousands of miles without any problems. However, if you do experience any of these issues, it's important to have them addressed by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to avoid further damage or safety issues.

SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-19
  • VIN: 1FT8W3BM4PE
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I intermittently lose trailer brakes when towing my trailers on my 2023 Ford F350. I have two trailers and both trailers give me intermittent faults saying "trailer disconnected' or "trailer turn signal lights not working", but the trailer is connected and the lights are working - but the brakes do not. I know this is a truck issue because both trailers have no issues with my 2017 Toyota Tundra. I have independently tested this theory with both trucks and trailers multiple times but only have the issue on the Ford truck. It seems to either be a bad 7-pin connector that randomly faults, or something with the trailer brake controller. It is very scary as I do not want to lose brakes when towing. I bought this truck specifically for towing my trailers. I have taken the issue to Auburn Ford, here in Auburn California and they tested the truck and found no issues. But my hunch is they are only using a 7-pin simulator, not an actual trailer.

  • VIN: 1FT8W3BM5PE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I started my truck normally when a very loud screeching/ pounding was coming from the speakers. My decibel meter was reading 128 dB. Super loud! The volume didn't matter, turning off the radio did nothing. I was on my way to the dealership and stopped half way because of the noises from the speakers. I have a recording but it does even come close to how loud it actually is. No way can I drive it like this.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-05
  • VIN: 1FT8W3BM5PE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The issue I am reporting concerns the management of the climate control in the vehicle. Setting a desired driver and/or passenger temperature setting is fruitless as the temperature will swing wildly on either side randomly either rendering the output to become extremely hot or cold. The safety concern is the ongoing requirement to continually adjust the settings to manage the wild swings in temperature which has been extremely concerning (dangerous) on longer commutes, tight traffic and in trailering as I must continually take my eyes off the road to adjust. The dealership has attempted to address the concern unsuccessfully and Ford will not acknowledge the concern. I am aware of and in contact with at least 4 other owners of the exact year, model, trim, options etc. with exactly the same concern and none able to obtain resolution or acknowledgement. Again, this truck is a large truck and when trailering a 40' load all attention must be on the road not fidgeting with a/c controls. Extremely unsafe. The issue arose within one week of taking delivery of the new vehicle and has continued for 7+ months without resolution. I have videos of the events occurring and have presented those to the dealership but am also told no codes are showing up during these events. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms occur leading up to the events. The vehicle has been into the dealership 5 times attempting to resolve but todate the issue is unresolved. Have included some of the dealership's work orders and write-ups but unable to upload videos.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 1FT8W3DM7PE
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: I have an F350 Dually that we use to tow on a regular basis. It is designed to be able to run a 5th wheel or gooseneck, which means the rear tailgate needs to be removed. When you remove the tailgate, none of the cameras on the vehicle work anymore. it would make sense if all cameras but the one on the tailgate would still work (since that one is no longer on the vehicle). But literally all the cameras, front, sides, and load watching, all become disabled even though they are still on the vehicle. If there was a safety recall on the wrong screen showing up on the backup camera... I would imagine this is an even bigger safety concern not having cameras at all. Especially the load checking camera by the third breaklight. That camera could be very invaluable for safe hauling practices to be able to continually check and have eyes on your load. And having the side view cameras available while towing is also a VERY valuable safety feature for getting through tight places such as gas stations or toll plazas. Dodge cameras all still work when the tail gate is removed. And, I believe previous years of the F250 and 350 all still work when you remove the tailgate. This seems like a major oversight on the 2023 F350s that could be a major safety concern. It is a well known problem on the forums/internet... curious why it hasn't been fixed yet or deemed a recall issue. Hopefully NHTSA can help the consumers with this problem. <3 Thank you for your consideration!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-04
  • VIN: 1FT8W3BT8PE

  • Summary: I was driving and a rock hit my front windshield. While the rock didn’t penetrate my windshield, glass shards hit me in the face and covered my cab. Windshield aren’t supposed to send shards of glass into the cab. This could’ve caused a multi vehicle crash had I not been wearing glasses.

The contact pulled over to the side of the roadway and turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle failed to exceed 5 MPH. The dealer was contacted but no assistance was provided. The vehicle had not been diagnosed. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 192,000.
