Following the 2009 model year, the Taurus X was withdrawn. From the 2009 model year, the larger Ford Flex has served as the three-row Ford CUV/wagon.
From 2005 to 2009, the Freestyle/Taurus X was assembled at Chicago Assembly (Chicago, Illinois); the final vehicle was produced on February 27, 2009.

- Summary: Driving my 2005 Ford Freestyle today when I suddenly heard a loud explosion or crash sound overhead. At first I thought something had fallen from the sky and crashed into the top of our vehicle. I immediately slowed down and pulled the car off the side of the road. My husband was a passenger in the vehicle. He carefully got out of the vehicle and looked on top of and around the vehicle. That is when we discovered that the glass in the sunroof had literally exploded and blown out of the vehicle. The track was still in place and operating normally. The glass was completely blown out of the vehicle. Because the Ford Freestyle was only in production for 3 years (I believe), there probably are not many still in use. Thus, there are probably not many Ford Freestyle owners having or reporting this problem. Besides being scared, the potential for being hit by the exploding glass and suffering substantial injuries to our heads, eyes, face, shoulders, bodies, could have been tremendous, if not deadly. I reported the incident to Ford Motor Company. The vehicle has not been inspected yet by manufacturer, police, insurance, or others. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the sunroof glass failure.

- Summary: WHILE I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, IT FEELS LIKE THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF. I AM STILL ABLE TO ACCELERATE, STEER AND STOP; HOWEVER, THE LIGHTS, HEATER AND RADIO SHUT OFF AND ALL OF MY GAUGES QUIT WORKING. MY DASHBOARD SAYS "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" BUT THE SOURCE OF THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND. I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE STARTER (WAS MAKING A CLICKING NOISE AT TIMES), BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES ON DIFFERENT ROAD TYPES AND VARYING SPEEDS.

- Summary: ALL ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON AT VARIOUS TIMES WITH NO WORKING GAUGES, BUT CAR DRIVES. WITHING PAST YEAR, HAD INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REPLACED 2 TIMES, ALTERNATOR REPLACED TWICE, INJECTOR COILS & SPARK PLUGS, CLEANED/REPLACED, BATTERY REPLACED, THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY & GASKET, . HAD DIAGNOSED AT 2 FORD DEALERS IN DIFFERENT STATES AND NEITHER CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT IS CAUSING ALL THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS TO STAY ON. BOTH DEALERS WERE ADAMENT IT WAS THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, WHICH CLEARLY IT IS NOT SINCE THE ERROR LIGHTS ARE STILL ON. HAVE BEEN TOLD IT COULD BE ELECTRICAL OR RCM, BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO TEST FOR EITHER. DEALER WANTS ME TO FOOT THE (HOURLY / UNION) LABOR RATE WHILE THEY TRY TO FIGURE IT OUT. CURRENTLY CAR IS CURRENTLY WITH LOCAL MECHANIC WHO IS GOING OVER THE CAR TO FIGURE IT OUT. NOTHING HAS BEEN DETERMINED YET.

THE SIDE DOOR LATCH MECHANISMS MAY EXPERIENCE WATER INTRUSION ALLOWING THE LATCH MECHANISM TO FREEZE IN COLD WEATHER.
- Consequence: AS A RESULT, THE DOOR LATCH PAWL MAY NOT RETURN TO THE LATCH POSITION WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED, AND THE DOOR COULD OPEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SHIELD OVER THE FRONT LATCHES; SEAL A DRAIN HOLE IN THE REAR WINDOW TRIM MOLDING ON THE FREESTYLE REAR SIDE DOORS; AND APPLY GREASE TO ALL FRONT AND REAR SIDE-DOOR LATCH MECHANISMS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 8, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

- Consequence: IF THIS HAPPENS, DRIVERS MAY NOTICE A NOISE OR A FUEL LEAK. A FUEL LEAK IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Hi there! I bought this car as a dealer demonstrator and have put 193,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues along the way. The check engine light was a bit of a headache until I got them to check the fuel pump (which wasn't on Ford's official procedure list). Additionally, the driver's seat heater went out twice. Despite these setbacks, I still love this car. However, I am currently experiencing some transmission issues.

I leased the Freestyle for 2 years and really enjoyed it with few problems, even though we leased it in its first year of production. I'm even considering getting a second one. My husband, who usually prefers Cadillac comfort, likes the ride of the Freestyle and thinks it is a solid and safe ride. Our elderly parents, who are not in the best of health, have been transported easily and comfortably. The height of the seat is just right for easy entrance and exit for them, without having to hop up into the seat. Transporting walkers and wheelchairs was also no problem. I highly recommend the Freestyle to anyone who asks about it.

It's great to have a vehicle that is so versatile and has such great fuel economy! I read a review that said it lacks power, but I disagree. In my opinion, it has plenty of power and is a fantastic wagon (small SUV).

I love driving my Freestyle. It drives like a larger car but doesn't have the truck feel. We just moved our daughter using it and it fit a lot of her things, including our grandson's toddler bed. It's great to know that the recall was taken care of without any issues by a different dealer than where we bought it.

We live in S. MD and bought the 05 Freestyle new while on a trip to WV; happened to pass a dealer in VA and just stopped in for a look. Traded an 01 Explorer Sport, and have really enjoyed the Freestyle. The handling, comfort, and space were very good; mileage averaged around 24 for 65k miles. CVT took a little getting used to, but really liked it in the mountains, and great in up to 10" of snow. No problems or repairs; just traded it in for a 2010 Lincoln MKX, wife's an SUV girl at heart. Interesting note, local dealer thought our Freestyle was so nice, it's in their showroom for sale, and they can only fit 3 vehicles in the showroom. Freestyle's don't stay on the lot long around here.

My father purchased this car new, but unfortunately, it has had multiple problems since then. After inheriting the car from my father, I have had to deal with several issues, including the transmission going out at 93K miles. Despite the dealership quoting over $6000 to replace the transmission, I have decided not to invest any more money into it. It is disappointing that even the dealership has acknowledged the issues with this car. As a result, I have decided to use alternative transportation. It is clear that this car is not worth the investment.

I encountered some issues with my newly purchased vehicle and unfortunately, the dealer did not provide any assistance when the brakes failed at just over 10000 miles. Despite the dealer's lack of support, I was able to find suitable rotors online for a much cheaper price, which have lasted for a long time. Interestingly, when I discussed the issue with the dealer, they dismissed my concerns despite my firsthand knowledge of the issue as an employee of the plant that builds the axle.

Our Freestyle was purchased with the assurance that it was a reliable automobile with no known issues. However, after a year of ownership, the car experienced a transmission failure and required a replacement of the CVT transmission. Despite replacing the mechatronic unit, the issue persists. The dealer's suggestion to light a match and drop it on the floorboard is unacceptable. A new transmission costs $6000 and a throttle body is $500, while the mechatronic unit was $800. Although the transmission has been a costly issue, once resolved, the Freestyle has the potential to be a great car.

I have not experienced any of the problems that some Freestyle owners have, even though I have driven 64,000 miles and am still under the Ford ESP Warranty. While the ride can be a bit bumpy and the gas mileage could be better, my biggest issue is the door locks freezing up in snowy or sub-25 degree weather, which prevents the doors from closing properly. However, I am confident that this issue can be resolved. Although I received a recall letter eight years ago and took it to a dealer, it turned out that nothing was done. Despite this, I still believe that the car is not bad overall, especially considering that winters in Maryland are not as severe as those in other states.
