Ford Explorer sport trac 2002 problems

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac (also shortened to Ford Sport Trac) is a pickup truck that was manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company for the North American market. The first mid-sized pickup truck produced by Ford, the Sport Trac was marketed from the 2001 to the 2010 model years (skipping the 2006 model year). Sized between the Ranger (whose crew cab variants were sold outside of North America) and the F-150, the Sport Trac largely competed against crew-cab variants of the midsize Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma.

Produced over two generations, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac shared its chassis and much of its body from the Ford Explorer SUV (with the pickup truck bed designed specifically for the model line). All production was sourced from the Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville, Kentucky (taking the place of the Ford Ranger).

As Ford developed the fifth-generation Ford Explorer as a unibody crossover for the 2011 model year, the Sport Trac was phased out of the model line, with production ending in October 2010. Closely matching the Sport Trac in size, the fourth-generation Ford Ranger serves the same market function in its SuperCrew four-door crew cab configuration.

Common Ford Explorer sport trac 2002 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, several common problems have been identified:

  • Rust on Ford Hoods: The Ford Explorer Sport Trac, like many vehicles, is prone to rust, especially in regions where salt is used on roads during winter. This can lead to corrosion on the hood, affecting the vehicle's appearance and potentially its structural integrity over time.
  • Electrical Issues - Dash Gauge Cluster: A common complaint among owners is the intermittent turning on and off of the dash gauge cluster and radio, even when the key is not in the ON position. This issue is often caused by wiring problems at the back of the cluster, including breaks in wires or connector pins, which can be damaged or missing. Mice chewing on wires in garages can exacerbate these electrical issues.
  • Engine Reliability: Despite some reported issues, many owners praise the engine's reliability in the 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The engine is described as robust, enduring high mileage without significant problems. This reliability has been highlighted through various driving conditions, including off-roading and towing, showcasing the engine's durability and performance.
  • General Wear and Tear: Over time, some owners have experienced general wear and tear issues, such as the need for engine replacements after high mileage. While the engine is praised for its reliability, it may require significant maintenance or replacements after prolonged use, as seen in cases where engines were replaced after reaching certain mileage thresholds.

These common problems highlight a range of issues that owners of the 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac may encounter, from mechanical concerns like transmission slipping to aesthetic issues like rust. Addressing these problems promptly and with proper maintenance can help ensure the longevity and performance of this vehicle.

Negative Ford Explorer sport trac 2002 car reviews

  1. Watson Koch 2024-11-09

This has been one of the most comfortable vehicles you could ever own. It seems to fit like a glove. It has performed flawlessly and has never had to return to the dealer for anything. Although it doesn't get quite the mileage you were hoping for, it is very reliable and stable on the road. Most everyone who has seen it has liked it and they comment on how smoothly it rides.

  2. Hector Greenholt 2024-06-24

I've heard that the paint on both the black and dark blue models isn't great, and the brake pads could be better. It seems like some customers have had issues with Ford's customer service as well.

  3. Lowell Nienow 2024-02-23

I just traded in my Sport Trac 4x4 with 24,000 miles. Overall, I really enjoyed driving this vehicle. However, I wanted to share my experience with others and let them know that it can be a bit unstable at highway speeds. I had a scary moment when I was driving on a curve at 70 MPH on an urban freeway and hit an uneven expansion joint. The truck started to skid and I almost lost control, but thankfully I was able to regain control just in time. I found that driving at highway speeds on patched pavement with potholes and during windy conditions required me to keep both hands on the wheel to stabilize the vehicle. However, when driving below 60 MPH, the Sport Trac handled just fine and felt like a typical truck.

  1. Quinn White 2024-11-21

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've been really happy with my vehicle since the day I got it.

  2. Jamaal Kutch 2024-11-15

We leased the first one off the truck at a dealership and absolutely loved it. After two years, we decided to buy one that was fully loaded and we have not had a single complaint since. My wife especially loves the higher view, comfort, and reliability of the unit, and we both appreciate the factory road assistance (even though we haven't needed it yet!). We even purchased the extended 7-year, 75,000-mile warranty, but thankfully have not needed any assistance. We've also added custom wind screens that are custom painted to match the Sporttrac silver.

  3. Clark Monahan 2024-11-14

This is such a great vehicle!

My Sport Trac is the best because it's the perfect combination of a truck and an SUV. It can easily switch between 2x4, 4x4 high, and 4x4 low, making it ideal for rough roads. Compared to the Avalanche (from what I've heard about it), the Sport Trac is better because it's easier to convert and has better gas mileage.
