1992 Pontiac Bonneville problems
The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.
The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.
The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

Common 1992 Pontiac Bonneville problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Pontiac Bonneville 1992, several common problems have been reported:
- Electrical Issues: Owners have experienced issues with the power windows and locks, dashboard instrument cluster, battery drainage, and stereo system. The power windows and locks may stop working due to a malfunctioning power window switch or blown fuse. Problems with the dashboard instrument cluster, including faulty gauges, are often caused by a faulty instrument cluster circuit board. Battery drainage can be attributed to various issues like a faulty alternator, parasitic draw, or short circuit in the wiring. Stereo system problems, such as random turning on and off, could be due to a faulty stereo unit or wiring issues.
- Faulty Alternator: A common issue in the Pontiac Bonneville 1992 is a faulty alternator, leading to battery drainage and loss of power. This issue, particularly prevalent in the 1977 and 1978 models, can cause significant inconvenience to owners.
- Ignition System Wiring: Faulty wiring in the ignition system has been reported to cause stalling or failure to start the car, sometimes resulting in a fire hazard. Drivers have mentioned smelling burning plastic before experiencing ignition system failures.
- Power Window Mechanism: The power window mechanism in the Pontiac Bonneville 1992 is prone to issues due to cheap plastic parts in the power window pulley assembly. This can lead to window regulator malfunctions, causing windows to get stuck or fail to move.
- Electronic Dashboard Display: The car's electronic dashboard display may fail, resulting in non-functional gauges and warning lights. This issue is often linked to a faulty printed circuit board and can be costly to repair.
- Electrical System Grounding: Owners have faced issues with the car's electrical system grounding out, leading to problems like flickering headlights and radio interference. Corroded or loose connections are often the culprits behind this issue.
These problems with the Pontiac Bonneville 1992 can be frustrating and costly to address. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs are essential to prevent these issues from escalating and causing further inconvenience to owners.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1995-06-01
- VIN: 1G2HY5216N1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: VOLTAGE FALLS AND MOTOR QUITS IN HEAT. BATTERY IS DEAD. REPLACING ALT & BATT DOES NOT HELP. VOLTAGE GETS LOWER AS HEAT BUILDS UNTIL BATTERY DIES. ENGINE FALTERS AND QUITS. HAS HAPPENED 8 TIMES SINCE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED (DIDN'T HAPPEN BEFORE). SSEI DOES NOT HAVE A VOLTMETER AND WE HAVE NOT SEEN THE BATTERY LIGHT COME ON IN ANY OF THE EVENTS (THOUGHT IT IS WEAK AND HARD TO SEE SO WE CAN'T BE SURE). DEALER KNOWS NOTHING. WE HAVE NOT FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE PROBLEM. I INSTALLED THE 130 AMPERE OPTION ALTERNATOR (FOR CARS WITH ELECTRICALLY HEATED WINDSHIELDS) THE LAST TIME AND HAVE BEEN MONITORING THE VOLTAGE. THE VOLTAGE DROPS STEADILY AS HEAT BUILDS, BUT SEEMS TO STOP AT ABOUT 13 VOLTS (I DIDN'T ADD VOLTMETER BEFORE GOING TO THE LARGER ALTERNATOR SO I DON'T KNOW HOW LOW VOLTAGE WENT IN EARLIER EVENTS .. THOUGH I DID EXPERIEMENT WITH SEMI-DEAD BETTERY AND THE ALTERNATOR DISCONNETED AND THE ENGINE QUITS AT ABOUT 10 VOLTS). I SEE OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS PROBLEM ON YOUR WEB SITE AND I'VE TALKED TO SEVERAL OTHER SSEI OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. ALL HAVE REPLACED ALTERNATOR AND/OR BATTERY TO NO AVAIL.

I AM NOT VERY HAPPY THAT I HAVE TO DRIVE A UNSAFE MOTOR VEHICLE THAT DOESN'T HAVE OPERATING TURNING AND EMERGENCY SIGNALS. I HAVE A WIFE AND CHILDREN THAT I TRANSPORT IN THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE. I AM AFFRAID FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AND OTHERS. MY VEHICLE IS A HAZARDEROUS TRANSPORTATION THAT WILL CAUSE TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS OR ACCIDENTS SUCH AS GETTING HIT FROM THE BEHIND. EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

- Summary: MY CAR STARTED MAKING A HORRIBLE NOISE UNDER THE HOOD ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK BACK IN DECEMBER. I LIVE ABOUT 4 MILES FROM WORK. I THOUGHT IT WAS A FAN BELT OR ANOTHER KIND OF BELT. I WAS GOING ABOUT 25-30MPH. SMOKE STARTED POURING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I WAS SCARED THAT IT WAS GOING TO BLAZE UP. I KEPT GOING ABOUT A HALF A MILE SO I COULD PULL INTO A STORE PARKING LOT. BY THIS TIME, THE SMOKE WAS REALLY COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE MEN INSIDE THE STORE CAME TO MY RESCUE. I JUMPED OUT OF THE CAR AND THEY RAISED THE HOOD AND SAE THAT THE AC COMPRESSOR HAD STOPPED WORKING. THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE COMPRESSOR AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE VALVES, GEARS,ETC HAD BURNED UP JUST IN THAT SHORT TIME. ONE MAN UNHOOKED IT SO I COULD USE MY HEATER SINCE IT WAS DECEMBER. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, OUR WEATHER HAD BEEN VERY WARM FOR WINTER. I COINTUED TO DRIVE IT OVER CHRISTMAS BREAK. I TOOK IT TOOK A CERTIFIED MECHANIC THIS WEEK AND WAS TOLD THAT IT HAD THE WRONG TYPE OF FREON IN IT. MY CAR HAS ONLY 78,000 MILES AND I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH THE AC UNTIL THAT DAY WHEN IT STARTED SMOKING. IT APPEARS THAT AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET, THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL SERVICE BULLETINS ABOUT AC PROBLEMS AND FREON. A CAR WITH SUCH LOW MILES SHOULDN'T HAVE AC PROBLEMS AND IF SO, THE PROBLEM SHOULD BE SO BAD. MY CAR WOULD HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE IF I HAD NOT STOPPED AND GOT HELP. LITTLE DID I KNOW IT WAS THE AC. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE HAVE BEEN SIMILAR PROBLEMS TO MINE. OF COURSE, THIS KIND OF PROBLEM PROBADLY HASN'T OCCURED IN MANY OF THE CAR,ESP. WITH LOW MILES. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR HELP IN THIS MATTER, MY CAR HAS BEEN GARAGED KEPT, SERVICED,, WELL KEPT,ETC. ANY HELP OR DIRECTION YOU CAN GIVE ME WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MS. Hi there! I just wanted to share with you the amazing story of my 1992 Bonneville. It was originally purchased by my brother-in-law and has been in our family ever since. My wife drives it every day to and from work, and it has now clocked an impressive 407,000 miles! We had the transmission rebuilt at 375,000 miles, but other than that, we've never had to go inside the engine. Of course, we've had to replace a few things over the years, like 3 radiators, 4 A/C compressors, and 4 alternators, but it still runs like a dream. My wife is determined to get at least 500,000 miles out of it before we even consider getting another car. We're so grateful to Pontiac for making such a reliable and long-lasting vehicle. Thanks for listening!

Great car! Fabulous 3.8/4spd automatic. It's unfortunate that I have to move on at 190k after years of cheap commuting. I had to pull the ABS fuse due to some weird behavior and had several annoying coolant leaks, but the rest was routine accessory stuff (alternator, starter, water pump etc). This is the best piece of Detroit heavy metal I've seen.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you're buying another Pontiac! It's wonderful to know that you've never been disappointed with your previous purchases.
-
I found it amusing to read through the comments because it reminded me of my own car. When you hit the gas, it felt like you could outdrive anyone, even though it was an older car. As for reliability, I can vouch for its greatness. It was my first car, and as a new driver at 19, it handled great in the snow. Recently, I was in a head-on collision with a drunk driver who ran a red light. I'm grateful for this car because if I had been driving a smaller car, I might not be here today. It was like a tank, and I'm going to miss it dearly. If you're considering buying one, I highly recommend it!

Your 1992 Pontiac Bonneville SE just turned 11 years old a few weeks ago and it's still going very strong! Other than one alternator, it's been pretty much trouble-free. It turned out to be an excellent purchase. The bucket seats have held up amazingly well and are still very comfortable. Although the paint has faded noticeably and quickly on the body-molded exterior mirrors, it's still a great car!

Bought used with 100k, right away the transmission 'slipped', but instead of replacing it, I got a full tune-up (plugs, wires, etc.) and it worked wonders! No more transmission slip and I saved $3000! It now has 218000 miles with the original transmission, shocks, and engine. There's no oil loss and it still has great power. This old goat shows no signs of dying anytime soon.

The 160000 mile sand car has been quite reliable. Only minor maintenance items have been repaired and the transmission and engine are solid. For that first review, you should find an honest mechanic (if you can). He is paying 5 times what he should!!!

It sounds like you've had a tough time with your car. It seems like everything that could go wrong did, from the transmission to the A/C, radio, master brake cylinder, interior electrical, front end, and alternator. That's a lot to deal with! On top of that, it sounds like the ride was a bit mushy and the seat was difficult to adjust. I hope things start looking up for you and your car soon.
Hayley Kshlerin 2024-07-27
I love this car! I inherited it from a sweet little old man three years ago when it had only 40,000 miles on it. Since then, I've replaced standard items like the alternator, water pump, and brakes, but this family car has been a reliable companion for both around-town commutes and 300-500 mile road trips. It has a sporty feel and can climb the mountains in Western PA with ease. Plus, it's great in the snow! The classic looks of this car make me proud to drive it wherever I go.

I had a difficult experience with this car. From week one, I had to replace several parts, including three alternators, two wheel bearings, a water pump, a computer, and a transaxle. Unfortunately, when the transmission failed, I had to let it go. Additionally, the plastic interior did not hold up well and was not suitable for children. However, I did appreciate the engine and how it handled on snow. Overall, it was not the best fit for me.
