2022 Toyota Corolla cross problems
The Toyota Corolla Cross (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラクロス, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra Kurosu) is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota since 2020. Adopting the Corolla nameplate, it is positioned as a more practical and larger alternative to the C-HR and built on the same TNGA-C (GA-C) platform as the E210 series Corolla. By size, the Corolla Cross is positioned between the smaller C-HR—with which it shares a platform—and the larger RAV4, in Toyota's global crossover SUV lineup.
It was first unveiled in Thailand in July 2020 along with other Southeast Asian markets and Taiwan in the same year, while its introduction in other markets started in 2021.
The twin model of the Corolla Cross, called the Toyota Frontlander (Chinese: 锋兰达; pinyin: Fēnglándá), is available exclusively in China and was introduced in late 2021.

Common 2022 Toyota Corolla cross problems
The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross has been a reliable vehicle for most owners, but there have been some reported issues. One of the main concerns was a recall for the front passenger airbag, which may not deploy as designed due to a manufacturing error in the instrument panel. This issue could increase the risk of injury in a crash and affect 96,000 2022 and 2023 model year Corolla Cross SUVs. Toyota advised that no one should sit in the front passenger seat until the vehicle is inspected and the remedy is performed if necessary.
Another issue reported by consumers is the excessive road noise in the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross, which lacks insulation or cavity wax/sound pads or undercoat. This can make for an uncomfortable driving experience, especially at higher speeds.
There have also been complaints about the engine, with 49 out of 65 owner reports for the 2023 Corolla Cross relating to engine issues. This is a significant concern, as engine problems can lead to expensive repairs and decreased vehicle reliability.
Lastly, some owners have reported issues with the fuel sending unit and blindside detector chip, both of which were covered under warranty but were unexpected. While these issues were resolved without additional cost to the owners, they still highlight the importance of being aware of potential problems with a new vehicle.
In conclusion, while the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross has been a reliable vehicle for most owners, there have been some reported issues, including a recall for the front passenger airbag, excessive road noise, engine problems, and unexpected issues with the fuel sending unit and blindside detector chip. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
- VIN: 7MUDAAAG5NV
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I had this issue 2 times so far, and I thought I was crazy since it hasn't happened since, but I noticed another report of someone else having the exact same issue. This prompted me to include my own report, as this could be a fatal flaw that needs review immediately. While I was pulling out into traffic from a stop sign to cross multiple lanes, my engine on my 2022 Corolla Cross XLE shut off without any warning. I was stopped at the stop sign, which the engine shut off as it's designed to. Upon releasing the brake, the engine started and I accelerated to cross the lanes to get into the left turning lane. As I accelerated, the engine shut off without any intervention from my part. There were no warnings on the dash, beeps, or error messages. I pressed the accelerator multiple times without any propulsion as traffic to my left was approaching me. Thankfully they slowed down seeing me "stopped" in the middle of the road. After a few seconds of being dead in the water, the engine kicked back on and I was able to accelerate again. The same thing happened at another time that was nearly identical to this situation. I do not remember the exact date of the occurrence, but I believe it was in April of 2023 and the second occurrence was a about a month later. Since then, I have not had this exact issue happen. Although, I have pulled into traffic and had the accelerator not react quickly, which caused me to "crawl forward" at a slow speed, even if I floored the pedal. This issue has happen many times, around 8, since I purchases the car in January of 2023.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- VIN: 7MUCAABG3NV
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: On [XXX] at [XXX], my 2022 Corolla Cross popped up with the message “Engine Maintence Required Visit Your Dealer.” I sat on the phone with Toyota for an hour and a half scheduling and asking for help. I got my car in July of 2024, I only had driven my car for a MONTH when this happened. It was a certified GOLD used toyota vehicle. I went to Lia Toyota of Northampton at 9:00am for my appointment and they could not get me a diagnosis until Monday morning. I drove 100 miles across the state to Ira Toyota of Danvers to get my car looked at. I was in the waiting room for six hours waiting to hear updates— I didn’t get one until two and a half hours of waiting. They said it was a COOLANT BIPASS VALVE issue. And it was a serious one. This was a SERIOUS danger to me and my car. I had to drive 100 MILES to get it fixed. HOWEVER: to get this fixed I missed 6 HOURS of Work, totalling to 195.96 dollars in MISSED payroll. I also had to take TWO HOURS (another 65.32) to get my car fixed. I also spent half a tank of gas to get there (20 dollars). I also missed CLASS on Friday to go to and from my appointment (1.5 hours of missed classes/work). I had a LOT of emotional strain during this. I was ping ponged across the state and told very scary stuff. I am absolutely appalled by this and I want to make sure my voice is heard. - Summary: When driving in the rain and my start/stop function is turned on, my car will turn off and make a loud beep with a message stating “engine stopped steering power low”. The check engine light and the power steering light pop up on the dashboard and I have to restart the car. This happens in the middle of traffic and is scary to think that it can happen any time while I’m driving. My car has less than 15,000 miles on it. This has happened numerous times, but more and more frequently lately.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
- VIN: 7MUEAAAG0NV
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have a 2022 Corolla Cross XLE. There have been multiple occurrences where I will be stopped waiting to cross traffic. As I go to accelerate forward quickly, the vehicle begins to move and then the vehicle stops like it has lost power but the vehicle is still turned on without any warning lights or anything. You attempt to floor the gas pedal to get the vehicle to move to avoid being hit by oncoming traffic and there is no response for about 5 or so seconds until finally the engine kicks back on. I have been almost hit multiple times from this happening. Toyota claims they can't get the issue to replicate and therefore there isn't anything they can do. There are multiple forums of people having this same issue. This is a potential fatal issue and something needs to be done to get these vehicles off the road.
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-14
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 7MUEAAAG1NV
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I experienced 4 near-death experiences by this car. 1. 10/14/23 Car caught on fire. Car was parked and turned off. Everything inside was shut off. When I stepped out the car, the engine was still running but it sounded loud like a lawnmower. I went back into the car and turned it back on. Several lights and system malfunction messages displayed on dashboard. I turned off the car and everything inside shut off. When I stepped out the car, the engine was still on, sounded like a lawn mower, and caught on fire. Estimator from my insurance couldn't identify the issue and had car taken to dealership services. I contacted Toyota corporate who claimed they would send an investigator, but he never came. Dealership replaced engine and engine harnesses that burned, and discharged car to me on 12/05/23. 2. 01/09/24 while driving on the highway at 65 mph, my engine shut off and steering wheel locked. I had a difficult time getting into the left shoulder to safety. Several system malfunction msgs displayed on dashboard. Car was towed to dealership services that evening. I had an appt for 8:15AM the next day. Servicer from Toyota dealership called me at 8:34 AM and told me to come pick up my car because they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I refused and explained the dangerous situation. Master mechanic ran more tests and couldn't find the issue so discharged the car back as is on 1/13/24. 3. 2/5/24, driving on highway at 65 mph, engine shuts off and steering wheel locked. I had a difficult time getting into the right shoulder to safety again. Several system malfunctions displayed on dashboard. Car was towed to dealership services. Servicer from Toyota calls again and tells me to pick up vehicle. They said they didn't find any issues with car. I begged them to run more tests. 2/14/24 They found "starter" part to be defected. Starter replaced and car discharged on 2/27/24. 4. 2/28/24 Driving on highway again, system malfunction msgs displayed. Car now in dealership. 4.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-23
- VIN: 7MUDAABG8NV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross on the highway, my car’s dashboard indicated a warning stating “12-Volt Battery Charging; System Malfunction Stop in a Safe Place; See Owner’s Manual.” I immediately got off the highway and called Toyota Roadside Assistance to get the car towed to the dealership. I was informed the following day, the Corolla Cross is not putting out enough battery to its alternator, and causing the car to not be safe to drive. To this date, the car is still in the dealership after 70+ days and I have logged a formal complaint with Toyota directly. The service person at the dealership informed there were additional Corolla Crosses at the dealership who has experienced this issue and awaiting solution/parts too. I decided to contact NHTSA when I heard the problem was not just my vehicle but could potentially be a larger issue with this model of cars.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-11
- VIN: 7MUBAABG5NV
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The engine stopped working. Happened already 4th time and on the fourth time I was reversing to park in the parking garage and engine suddenly stopped. Dashboard lights are on but couldn’t start the car. After two minutes and fourth attempt it did start. The third repair toyota mentioned they couldn’t duplicate the concern and my car is working fine till this happened. They don’t want to admit there’s something wrong because every time I bring it to them it’s working. So they keep telling me that they couldn’t find any problem. It’s really dangerous that engine suddenly stopped. First attemp they replace the battery then they did dcm reset third one they said they couldn’t duplicate , so I brought where I got my car and same explanation. They couldn’t duplicate so they send it back to me. Very unsafe.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-05
- VIN: 7MUBAABG1NV
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I am writing to complain about a serious safety defect in my 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross (VIN [XXX] ). On August 11, 2023, I recently received a letter from Toyota stating that the passenger airbag in my car may not deploy as designed in the event of a crash. This is a serious safety defect, and I am concerned about the safety of my car. I have owned my Corolla Cross for in excess of a year, and I have never been in an accident. However, I am a father with two young children, and I use my car every day to take them to school and activities. I am worried about the possibility of being in a car accident, and I do not want my children to be injured because of a defect in my car. I understand that Toyota is offering to fix the airbag for free. However, I am not comfortable with having a car that has a known safety defect. I would like to request that Toyota recall my car and replace it with a new car. I believe that I am entitled to a new car, because it is not my fault that my car has a safety defect. I am a loyal Toyota customer, and I have always been satisfied with my Toyota vehicles. However, I am disappointed that Toyota has not recalled my car to fix this safety defect. I hope that the NHTSA will investigate this matter and take action to ensure that Toyota recalls my car and replaces it with a new car. Thank you for your time and consideration. UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-05
- VIN: 7MUDAAAG1NV
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My brand new 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross has 2 issues: 1) The 'pre-collision' feature brakes when I don't need it to. I told Toyota that I've almost got into car accidents but they said they 'can't turn it off'. 2) There is paint peeling from my front bumper for no reason. Brian Kessler at Marietta Toyota said “it's likely because when I ordered my car in 'white', the bumper was black, so they painted it without primer”. They keep telling me that "they'll call me regarding this issue", but they haven't. This vehicle's pre-collision system is over-sensitive as it continues to attempt to prevent an accident by taking control of the vehicle when I don't need/want it to. It suddenly brakes when I need to continue in motion to avoid a particular hazard, potentially causing an accident. I’ve been driving for 30+ years, and I have an impeccable driving record, so I don’t need my car to ‘think’ for me and take control of the vehicle. The service department at Marietta Toyota told me to contact Toyota.com to have them give me a ‘waiver’ with Toyota, stating that if I am involved in a motor vehicle accident as a result of this feature, then Toyota will be responsible. I spoke with at least 3 Toyota representatives at your Brand Engagement center, and was told that this feature cannot be removed, nor is there any ‘waiver’ form. Then they told me that since there is nothing 'wrong' with the car, there is nothing they can do. The last representative I spoke to told me that my complaint has been recorded and is on my ‘Toyota file’. He agreed to email me a copy of my complaint and the case number attached to my record, but I never received an email from him. I can't get them to return my calls, and I'm tired of driving to and from the service department just for them to tell me that they'll 'call me', when they have not. I am beyond angry as my issues regarding this vehicle are not resolved, and I feel betrayed by a company that has falsely gained my trust, and then destroyed it
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-05
- VIN: 7MUEAABG8NV
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was stopped at a red light in a very light rain with intermittent wipers going. Engine stopped as it does when stopped. When light turned green and I pressed the gas, nothing happened. Car rolled forward but due to grade not engine. Display message said something like Engine stopped. Press brake firmly. That’s all I remember. There was a car behind me honking loudly and frequently. I sat there for a minute or two trying to get the engine going again. Y moving the shifter. I was able to take the car in and out of park multiple times, which I should not have been able to do if the engine was off, so the engine was not off. I think I must have finally hit the engine start switch but I don’t remember how many time. Once the engine started again the car without further problem.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
- VIN: 7MUDAABG3NV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: We came to a complete stop and the engine turned off completely. We got a message that said “power steering is low.” Input the car in park and had to restart the car. This happened twice that day. I believe intermittent wipers were on. I believe this is the same issue flagged here by multiple individuals in this Reddit thread https://www.reddit.com/comments/t7rv4b?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=4
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-02
- VIN: 7MUEAAAG5NV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Vehicle message flashes up: "Voltage abnormality Steering Power Low" and car shuts off entirely while driving!!!! A quick Google yields scores of other people experiencing the same problem, many of them bringing in the car to the dealership with no fix made! Only 5,000 miles on the car! Vehicle has been brought back to dealership after being towed home.
STEERING,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
- VIN: 7MUCAABG6NV
- Components: STEERING,ENGINE
- Summary: I was on my way back home from work. I stopped at a red light, when my car suddenly shut off and started making a noise and then the monitor said: engine failure and power steering low. I could not move the steering wheel. Everyone was honking at me because I was in the middle of the road with the car shut off. I put the car on parking and then I was able to turn it on again. It is concerning that the car shut off. This is clearly a safety problem with The Toyota Corolla Cross. The dealership seems to not want to deal with the problem. Other owners of Toyota Corolla Cross have had the same issue. I believe there should be a recall.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-27
- VIN: 7MUBAAAG3NV
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I am concerned with the visibility of my car in the night/dark. When driving my car in the night I get flashed by divers behind me. I am almost completely sure it is because the rear lights are so small and dim. This car was not available for a test drive and often isn’t so how is a potential buyer to know of this issue unless it is pointed out? All of the demonstration videos are of the highest model which comes with the adequate lighting. The only way to have an adequately visible Corolla Cross (from behind) is to upgrade to the highest model. I worry that I am at a higher risk from other drivers of being rear ended when driving at night/on dimly lit streets.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-27
- VIN: 7MUBAABG4NV
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: This vehicle stalls intermittently when it comes to a full stop. This problem still exists and last occurred on June 27, 2022. The vehicle has an intermittent issue (unpredictable with months, or minutes in between). Weather and road conditions have varied. Location has varied as well. Dates of occurrence are February 13, 2022; March 12, 2022 (occurred twice within a 20-minute time span); and June 27. The vehicle stalls when it comes to a full stop (on all four occasions, this has occurred at a red light). The check engine light and the power steering light come on, as well as a message on the dashboard, stating, "Engine Stopped. Steering Power Low," "Engine Stopped. Press Break Firmly to Restart," and "Press Break Firmly to Restart Engine. ----- to start." During this time, a continuous *beep* is coming from the car. Shifting to Neutral, Manual, Drive, or Reverse does not resolve the issue. Shifting to Park makes the beeping sound go away, and I have to power on the car. On all four occasions, this happens seconds before or while the light turned green on high-speed and residential multi-lane routes. I have video evidence of this issue, but that is not an allowed file format.

I love my Cross! It has plenty of power for what it is. I think some people may be expecting too much power for what they're buying. The computer-simulated shifts are well-simulated compared to other CVTs out there. It also has a good ride for what we are buying. I just don't understand why people are being so hard on this compact CUV. I mean, it's a Corolla, not a Highlander!
-
The Corolla Cross looks and drives really nicely. It feels more solid than our previous GM SUV. We're so glad to be back in a Toyota. We've owned several Toyota vehicles and this is one of our favorites.
-
Love it! You really couldn't ask for more. It's comfortable, spacious, and economical.
-
I totally get what you mean about Corollas! It's a shame that there isn't a button on the remote to open the rear door. It can be a bit of a hassle to put down whatever you're carrying to manually open it.
-
Hey there! I wanted to share some exciting news with you - Toyota has just added a fantastic new feature!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to bring to your attention that I've been experiencing some issues with my car's headlights. Specifically, they seem to be producing a shadow on the driver's side, which is making it difficult to see while driving at night. I'm a bit concerned about the safety implications of this, and I noticed that the issue isn't discussed in the manuals or by the sellers. Do you have any advice on how I can address this? Thank you so much for your help!

The hatchback is a practical and easy-to-steer car that comes with AWD, making it perfect for inclement weather. It is a great option for first-time drivers and seniors. The stereo system has surprisingly good sound quality. With limited power under the hood, it is a safe option for high-school seniors. The car also offers good outward visibility. However, it may not be the best option for those looking for a 'driver's car', as it is quite underpowered and takes about five minutes to reach 0-60 mph, especially with passengers. The audible turn signals can be quite annoying and unfortunately cannot be silenced or lowered. The seat belt alert can also be quite alarming. The cup holders are quite small and may not be suitable for larger water bottles, but they are perfect for a 12 oz. can of Coke.

The car has a comfortable ride and lots of safety features. However, it may feel underpowered when accelerating on first gear.

I have owned five Toyotas, including this one. While the car has some drawbacks, such as uncomfortable armrests and seat belts that do not adjust well for smaller frames, I appreciate its low profile and sleek black and white design. However, I do not prefer the automated driving features and the keyless entry system, which I find to be less secure. Overall, I believe that Toyota could have done better with this model, especially considering its cost. As a confident driver and experienced Toyota owner, I would not recommend this vehicle to others. The seat belt issue I experienced was not resolved by Toyota's dealership, despite it being an engineering problem. Additionally, the engine cutting on and off is a common issue in many cars and can be detrimental to the engine. It is concerning that the back seats do not lay flat and have a large hump, especially when compared to Chrysler Corp's design which allows for storage underneath and a flat fold into the floorboard. The vehicle's acceleration is sluggish and lacks power when going downhill, making it difficult to overtake other vehicles.

We recently purchased the Toyota Corolla Cross XLE with the Platinum Coverage plan, mainly for my wife. During the first week, we experienced some unusual issues when going up an on-ramp. The car had trouble increasing speed and almost stalled. We thought it might be the torque converter, but there were no hard codes. Later, the problem went away. It only occurred when the car was cold (outside temperature was 40 degrees). We also had an issue with the rear door sticking when opening, but we have an appointment with Toyota to get it fixed. We have only driven about 100 miles so far. Although the inside and outside of the car are nice, there are some design flaws. For example, the platform charger is not very practical. The phone does not stay in place, and my wife's iPhone does not charge because of the camera's round protruding edge. My Android phone also would not charge. However, my home platform charger works fine, but it does not work in the Toyota Cross. Additionally, the mirror adjustment is small and located deep behind the door handle. It might be fine for people with small hands, but for me, it is difficult to reach the electric mirror adjustments with my fingertips. The center console storage box is also quite small, and it is not very useful. The auto-stop feature when at a light is also a bit annoying. Although there is a button on the console to allow the motor to keep running, you have to push it every time to start the car. You cannot turn it off completely. I prefer my engine to keep running, as it is cheaper than having to replace a starter motor for thousands of dollars because it dies out too soon due to this stop/start feature. Finally, the legroom is not sufficient for me. I am 6'-1When I open the glove box, it almost hits my knees. I find the one-touch windows annoying because they automatically go down all the way every time I put them down. This is especially frustrating when it's raining and I only want to crack the window open. Unfortunately, I can't do that without getting wet. Despite the JBL speakers, the sound system needs improvement. The menu display also needs to be redesigned to make selecting items easier. I had a similar problem with my son's new Corolla XLE, which he bought just 300 miles ago. It took me an hour to perform a function link between my phone and the Corolla while traveling in his car. On the bright side, the car is good on gas, much better than my other car which is a 2.4L. There are many features on this car similar to the Volvo, but configuring everything can be annoying. On December 11, 2023, I noticed that the right rear door keeps sticking. I can feel and hear it get stuck somewhere around the trim or door lock. I also noticed some markings on the rear door latch mounted on the frame - rubbing and scratches, so it is not aligned. Additionally, the right front passenger window always seems to have moisture on it after sitting. When I run the defrost, all the windows clear up and seem dry, but the right front passenger window stays wet or damp for many hours unless I wipe it off. I am concerned about a seal leak in the door.
