Dodge Viper problems
The Dodge Viper is a sports car that was manufactured by Dodge (by SRT for 2013 and 2014), a division of American car manufacturer FCA US LLC from 1992 until 2017, having taken a brief hiatus in 2007, and from 2010 to 2012. Production of the two-seat sports car began at New Mack Assembly Plant in 1991 and moved to Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in October 1995.
Although Chrysler considered ending production because of serious financial problems, on September 14, 2010, then-chief executive Sergio Marchionne announced and previewed a new model of the Viper for 2012. In 2014, the Viper was named number 10 on the "Most American Cars" list, meaning 75% or more of its parts are manufactured in the U.S. The Viper was eventually discontinued in 2017 after approximately 32,000 were produced over the 26 years of production.
The 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time on a Viper varies from around 3.5 to 4.5 seconds. Top speed ranges from 160 mph (260 km/h) to over 200 mph (320 km/h), depending on variant and year.

Common Dodge Viper problems
The Dodge Viper, known for its raw power and performance, has been a favorite of car enthusiasts since its introduction in 1992. However, like any vehicle, the Viper has its share of common problems that owners should be aware of.
One of the most well-known maintenance issues for early Vipers is tire availability. The car came with unique tire sizes that are not commonly found on other vehicles. This can make finding replacement tires challenging and potentially expensive. Later models of the Viper featured a slightly more accessible 18-inch wheel and tire package, which can be a consideration for those planning to burn rubber often.
Another issue that affects early Vipers is piston ring problems. This led to high oil consumption issues, which required several engine replacements during the warranty period. If you're looking at an early Viper, it may be worth comparing block numbers to VINs to ensure you're getting a vehicle with matching numbers.
Leaking from the thermostat gasket is another common problem in earlier Vipers, while leaks from the rear main seal and timing cover gaskets are more common in later production cars. As these vehicles age, rubber pieces like coolant hoses, bushings, and belts will begin to crack and fail, so a pre-purchase inspection is recommended, especially if the car is not from a reputable source.
The power steering pump pulley is also a well-known failure item in the Viper.
While these issues may seem daunting, it's important to note that the Viper community is incredibly dedicated and supportive. Owners can find plenty of clubs, online groups, and forums to connect with other Viper enthusiasts and seek advice on any issues they might encounter.
In summary, the Dodge Viper, while an iconic and powerful vehicle, has its share of common problems. Potential buyers should be aware of tire availability, piston ring issues, leaks, power steering pump pulley failures, and sagging doors. However, with a supportive community and the right resources, owning a Viper can be a rewarding and thrilling experience.
Are Dodge Vipers reliable?
Are Dodge Vipers Generally Reliable? On average, you'll find that most people consider Dodge Vipers to be very reliable vehicles, capable of doing well over 40,000 miles without running into any maintenance problems or concerns. However, the most reliable and possibly most popular year for the Dodge Viper was 2013.
Why did the Viper fail?
Initially, Fiat Chrysler cited poor sales as a reason for discontinuing the Viper; however, other sources have stated the car was discontinued because the Viper was unable to comply with FMVSS 226 safety regulation, which requires side-curtain air bags.
How many miles will a Dodge Viper last?
According to motorandwheels.com, the Dodge Viper is expected to last between 100,000 and 120,000 miles. It's not a car with a very long lifespan, unfortunately. It will never be a commuter vehicle. However, some items may expand the lifespan of your Viper.
What was the problem with the 1993 Dodge Viper?
Early Vipers (think 1992-1993) suffered from piston ring issues, which led to high oil consumption problems. This led to several engine replacements early on, while the cars were still under warranty.

- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY CAR AND SOMETHING LIKE A RUBBER/ELECTRICAL SMELL WAS NOTICED. I LOOKED IN MY REARVIEW MIRROR AND SEEN I HAD SMOKE FILLING THE REAR OF THE CAR. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER. GOT OUT AND OPENED THE REAR LIFT GATE AND AS I LOOKED TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON MY REAR LIFT GATE GLASS EXPLODED INTO A MILLION PIECES. IT WAS AS LOUD AS A SHOTGUN GOING OFF. I WAS VERY LUCKY I HAD STOPPED MY CAR AS IT COULD POSSIBLY HAVE CAUSE ME OR SOMEONE DRIVING BEHIND ME TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT IF I HAD BEEN TRAVELING DOWN THE ROAD. THERE WASN'T A PIECE OF GLASS NO BIGGER THAN A DIME LEFT OF THE REAR GLASS. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT I DIDN'T GET CUT OR GLASS IN MY EYES. SHORTLY AFTER IT HAPPENED I REMEMBERED THAT IF THE REAR DEFROSTER WAS TURNED ON THAT THE REAR GLASS COULD EXPLODE OUT. I THEN REMEMBERED THAT I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGING THE RADIO CHANNEL AND MUST HAVE TOUCHED THE BUTTON FOR THE REAR DEFROSTER. MY DASH SCREEN WAS DIMMED SINCE I WAS RUNNING MY PARKING LIGHTS AND COULD NOT SEE MY RADIO BUTTONS AND INSTEAD PRESSED THE BUTTON TURNING ON THE REAR DEFROSTER INSTEAD OF TRYING TO CHANGE THE RADIO CHANNEL. SOMETHING ABOUT IF THE CARBON FIBER PANELING WAS TOUCHING THE GLASS IT COULD CAUSE A MISHAP. I CONTACTED MY DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THERE WASN'T A RECALL ON IT AND THAT THERE WASN'T ANYTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT AND THAT THERE WAS ONLY A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT IT. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND THEY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. NOW I HAVE TO PAY TO REPLACE MY GLASS AND ALSO I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO USE MY DEFROSTER IN THE FUTURE. SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS BEFORE THIS HAPPENS TO SOMEONE ELSE OR WORSE CAUSE SOMEONE TO HAVE A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE DEALERSHIP NEVER ENSURED MY CAR WAS UPDATED TO PREVENT THIS FROM EVER HAPPENING. FCA SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND CORRECT THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM ASAP. *TR

- Summary: VEHICLE BEGAN HAVING ISSUES AT 10, 500 MILES BY NOT STARTING. PUSH THE START BUTTON ONE TIME AND THE CAR WOULD GO DEAD. IF I LIFTED UP ON THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE, THE CAR WOULD START WITH NO ISSUES. LET GO OF THE CABLE AND THE SAME PROBLEM. WHEN THIS FIRST OCCURRED, I BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY. PROBLEM SEEMED OK. AFTER A FEW DAYS, THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING AND THE CAR TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING CAUSING LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKE ASSIST. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE BATTERY TEMP SENSOR AND THAT IT HAD DONE THAT ONCE IN THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND THEY THOUGHT THE BATTERY WAS JUST WEAK.. SENSOR WAS REPLACED AND THE VEHICLE WAS FINE FOR APPROX. 900 MILES BEFORE IT STARTED DOING IT AGAIN. I RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER ONLY FOR THEM TO TELL ME THAT THE BATT TEMP SENSOR WAS BAD AGAIN.. THEY REPLACED THE SENSOR TOR THE SECOND TIME AND THEN APPROX. 900-1000 MILES LATER, THE PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY BACK AT THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THEY ARE NOW SAYING THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE IS BAD AND THE HARNESS NEEDS REPLACED FOR THE BATTERY SYSTEM. THIS VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY FCA AS A CORPORATE VEHICLE. I AM THE FIRST CONSUMER OWNER. I THINK THIS VEHICLE HAS MANY ISSUES AND MAY NOT MEET ALL REQUIRED SAFETY STANDARDS ALLOWING FOR ITS SALE. I HAVE A SECOND SAFETY COMPLAINT IN THE SYSTEM FOR THIS VEHICLE. *TR

The design of this car is truly timeless. It's impossible to get tired of looking at it. Every time I start it up, the engine roars with power. The exhaust note is one of the best on the street. The color combination is also a standout feature - the red exterior with black interior, red shifter and steering wheel, and yellow wheels really make it pop. Whenever I take it to a car show, it always attracts the most attention out of all the super cars.

I see that you purchased this car used at a local Ferrari Dealership. It's definitely a fast car, but with gas prices continuing to rise and the requirement for premium gas, I understand your concerns about how long you'll be able to keep it. The SRT-10 does tend to drink up the gas. However, it's still an impressive vehicle. While comfort may not be the best during long rides and handling could use some improvement, it's still a thrilling ride.

The SRT-10 may not be as visually striking as its predecessors, the RT/10 or GTS models, but it still embodies Bob Lutz's original vision: a street-legal race car that can hold its own on the track, all for under six figures. And even though it wasn't specifically built for it, achieving quarter-mile times in the 11's straight off the shelf is quite impressive!
