2017 Dodge Journey problems
The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Dodge brand for model years 2009 to 2020 over a single generation, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was styled by Ryan Nagode, and was marketed globally in both left- and right-hand drive, including as the Fiat Freemont.
Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.
Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common 2017 Dodge Journey problems
The 2017 Dodge Journey has been reported to have several common problems, based on complaints from owners. These issues include engine failures, computer problems, and a malfunctioning A/C system.
Engine failures are a significant concern for the 2017 Dodge Journey. The camshafts in the engine can break as the vehicle ages, typically around 90,000 miles. This issue can lead to expensive repair costs, with rebuilding the engine using new cams costing approximately $3,800.
Computer problems have also been reported for the 2017 Dodge Journey, occurring around 60,000 miles. The main computer, which controls various functions such as the engine, lights, radio, and A/C, can fail. This failure can prevent the vehicle from starting, and replacing the computer is another expensive project, costing around $1,200 depending on local labor rates.
The A/C system can also malfunction in the 2017 Dodge Journey, usually due to a worn-out blower motor or a faulty compressor. Replacing the blower motor costs around $550, and a new compressor can exceed $1,000.
In addition to these problems, there are two recalls for the 2017 Dodge Journey. The first recall addresses a cruise control system that cannot be canceled, which Dodge will fix by updating the software. The second recall covers a side reflector, which Dodge will replace free of charge.
These issues contribute to the 2017 Dodge Journey lasting around 150,000 miles, with serious engine and computer problems reported. Despite its relatively low cost, between $11,350 and $22,000, the 2017 Dodge Journey's common problems make it a vehicle that potential buyers should avoid.

This is the second Dodge Journey I have owned and both have had the shaking issue. My automatic braking system and cruise control will no longer work as a result of the ABS failure, which makes this very dangerous to drive. I only have around 90,000 miles on this car and planned to keep it long term, but finding that I cannot get parts. I have also always had many problems with the fuel system. The light goes on all the time for the fuel cap even when it is on. The dealership advised it is the closure for the fuel tank that keeps having an issue. I smell fuel inside my car as soon as I turn it off after driving.

2017 Dodge Journey recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2017 Dodge Journey.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Dodge Journey vehicles. The amber side reflex reflector assembled into the headlamp may not reflect brightly enough. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Consequence: A dim reflector may reduce the visibility of the vehicle to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the headlamp assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 16, 2023. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is Z99.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
- Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

Hey there! That's an awesome car!
-
The AWD is great for rain and snow. We have only done normal maintenance and replaced the tires. This is actually our second one, with 162,000 miles.

This vehicle has a great quality ride, especially when driving on the freeway. The 3.3 V6 engine and six-speed transmission make for a very comfortable and smooth ride. While there are some downfalls, such as poor mileage if you drive aggressively, the FWD Journey 3.3 V6 can be difficult to control when turning at high speeds. However, since it's not a racing Hotrod, normal driving is enjoyable. Overall, I really like my Journey.

I've had my Dodge for over a year now and it's just now starting to have some problems, but since it was used, that's to be expected. It's going to the dealership tomorrow and it's still under warranty, so I hope it's still covered. However, even if it's not, I would still consider buying a new one. When I got my Dodge, I was actually looking for a Tahoe, but the dealership asked me if I had ever thought about a Dodge. I'm so glad I tried it! It has everything we were looking for - three seats, plenty of room, and it's not too big or expensive on gas.
-
You have an excellent vehicle! It's great to hear that you replaced the battery 3 years ago and recently had a tune up. Even though you got new tires, it's impressive that you were able to get 65000 miles plus out of the old ones.

It's worth noting that some parts of the car may need attention after a certain amount of mileage. For example, the rack and pinion system may fail around 80,000 miles, which can affect the car's steering. Additionally, the battery may need to be replaced within the first 2 years due to its location, which can cost around $500. It's also important to keep an eye on the struts, as they may fail and leak around 25,000 miles, which can cost around $1400 to replace. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues can be addressed and the car can continue to run smoothly.
Sven Pacocha 2024-10-04
I recently purchased this car and unfortunately, I have noticed some issues with the front-end making clunking noises over small bumps and the headlights occasionally blinking while driving at night. I took it to the Dodge dealer to have it checked out, but they said everything was fine. However, I still noticed the clunking noise and mentioned the headlight issue to a mechanic who confirmed the noise and explained that it is normal for a Journey. Although I am a bit concerned about these issues, I am hoping that the car will last for the duration of the loan. Thank you for your understanding.
Filiberto Bode 2024-06-24
I have been driving this car as a rental for over a month. The cabin is quiet and the seats are comfortable. Although, I have experienced some issues with the acceleration, gas mileage and transmission, which can be a bit sluggish and not shift smoothly between gears. Additionally, the brake and gas pedals are positioned quite high, which has caused some discomfort in my right ankle. Unfortunately, the radio stations do not tune well, but I have found a solution by plugging in my phone. However, this means I cannot talk on the phone while driving. Overall, while I would not personally buy this car, it has some positive features and can be a good option for some drivers. I am looking forward to turning it in and getting my car back.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Dodge Journey that I purchased in January of the same year. While I've enjoyed driving it, I have noticed that the trunk space is quite limited and it doesn't come with Bluetooth or a navigation system. Unfortunately, I ran into a bit of trouble today (02/10/19) when it wouldn't start, even after trying to jump it. It's still relatively new, so I'm not sure what could be causing the issue. Do you have any suggestions or advice?
Tad Hoeger 2024-06-01
I wish I had listened to my gut feeling! During the test drive, I noticed some shaking, but the salesperson assured me that it was just the tires. They even put on a new set, and I thought the problem was solved. Unfortunately, the shaking returned, and I had to call the dealership. They balanced the tires and sent me on my way, but the issue persisted. I was frustrated when the dealership suggested that the problem might be with the tires again and replaced them with another set. Even then, the problem persisted, and I decided to cut my losses and get rid of my Dodge Journey. It's disappointing that the issue was never resolved, but I learned a valuable lesson about trusting my instincts.
