1999 Chrysler Sebring convertible problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ SEE-bring) is a line of mid-size automobiles that was sold from 1995 through 2010 by Chrysler. Three generations of convertibles, two generations of sedans, and two generations of coupes were produced. Although the coupe shared the same name and some styling cues, it was mechanically unrelated to the other Sebring models.

The Sebring line was introduced in 1995 with the Chrysler Sebring coupe. It was the replacement for the Chrysler LeBaron coupe. In 1996 the convertible was introduced, replacing its LeBaron counterpart as well. For 2001, both body styles were redesigned and a sedan version was offered, replacing the Chrysler Cirrus. The coupe was discontinued after 2005 with no replacement model planned.

The redesigned sedan was introduced for 2007, and a convertible the following year. New options included all-wheel drive on sedans and an available retractable metal top for the convertible. All Sebring models were replaced by the Chrysler 200 for the 2011 model year.

Common 1999 Chrysler Sebring convertible problems

The Chrysler Sebring Convertible, particularly the 1999 model, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the 2.7L Chrysler V6 engine, which was used in the convertible from 2001 to 2006. This engine has a history of oil problems due to sludge build-up, which can lead to significant engine damage if not addressed promptly. While these issues were reportedly addressed in later models, the 1999 Sebring Convertible may still be susceptible to this problem.

Another common issue with the 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible is related to the automatic transmission. The car uses the 41TE transmission, which has been reported to have a high failure rate. Many owners have reported problems with the transmission shifting, particularly when the computer throws an engine code, causing the transmission to go into "Limp Home Mode" and only utilizing 2nd gear. This can be a significant inconvenience and may require costly repairs.

The 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible also has a history of electrical problems. Owners have reported issues with the distributor and starter, which can lead to the car not starting or running poorly. Additionally, the car's convertible top has been known to have issues, particularly with the window regulators, which can be expensive to repair.

Despite these issues, some owners have reported that the 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible is a stylish and attention-grabbing car, particularly in sunny states. However, it is essential to note that the car has a low profile, which can make it challenging to see bumps and obstacles on the road. Additionally, the car's low profile can make it more susceptible to damage in accidents.

In summary, the 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible has several common problems, including engine sludge build-up, transmission shifting issues, electrical problems, and issues with the convertible top. While some owners have reported that the car is stylish and fun to drive, it is essential to be aware of these issues and to maintain the car regularly to avoid costly repairs.

MECHANICS DO NOT KNOW WHY THIS SHOULD HAPPEN UNLESS IT IS THE SEAT BELT CONTROL MODULE WHICH CAN ONLY BE DONE BY A DEALER. ONE WORD "EXPENSIVE!" THIS IS A SAFETY & LAW ISSUE AND SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MANUFACTURER FOR FAULTY SAFETY PRODUCT AND OPERATION. AFTER MY RESEARCH I SEE MANY OF THE SAME ISSUES WITH THE SEAT BELTS OVER AND OVER. THIS IS A REPETITIVE PROBLEM. *TR

CHRYSLER WON'T EVEN RETURN MY CALLS REGARDING THE ISSUE, WHICH I'VE RESEARCHED AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF OTHERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD AND CHRYSLER SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHATEVER IT IS THAT IS CAUSING THIS TO HAPPEN. I'M WONDERING IF I CAN TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THEM. SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-12-17
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: FRONT PASSENGER SIDE BALL JOINT FAILURE. WHILE TURNING RIGHT INTO A SHOPPING PLAZA THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT BALL JOINT FAILED ON MY WIFE'S 1999 CHRYSLER SEBRING CONVERTIBLE LIMITED. THIS CAR AT THE TIME HAD LESS THAN 61,000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED AS A USED CAR THE DAY BEFORE. THE CAR WAS SAFETY CHECKED BY THE DEALERS MECHANIC BEFORE THE SALE WITH NO ISSUES NOTED THAT WERE NOT REPAIRED. I UNDERSTAND THROUGH A SEARCH OF THE NHTSA DATABASE THAT THERE ARE OTHER REPORTS OF BALL JOINT FAILURES AND A SAFETY RECALL ON THE COUPE MODEL OF THE SEBRING FOR THIS FAILURE. I WOULD SAY GIVEN THE MILEAGE ON THIS USED CAR THAT A SIMILAR RECALL IS WARRANTED SINCE THIS CAR EXHIBITS THE SAME TYPE OF FAILURE WITH LITTLE WARNING OF A PROBLEM EXISTING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RECTIFIED BY THE MANUFACTURE DUE TO A CLEARLY FAULTY DESIGN. FORTUNATELY IN THIS CASE NO ONE WAS INJURED NOR WAS DAMAGE DONE TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE CAR. *TR

  • VIN: 3C3EL55H1XT
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 CHRYSLER SEBRING CONVERTIBLE. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED AND ALMOST CAUSED A CRASH. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. HE BELIEVED THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM. HE REMOVED THE FUEL TANK FROM THE VEHICLE AND FOUND BURNT WIRES, WHICH WERE CONTROLLING THE FUEL PUMP. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP WIRES AND THE FUEL PUMP ITSELF, BUT CURRENTLY THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START. HE STATED THAT THE DEALER OVERCHARGES HIM DURING EVERY VISIT AND THEY CANNOT DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT IT IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE RECALLED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 110,000.

  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I OWN A 1999 CHRYSLER SEBRING CONVERTIBLE THAT ALL THE SEAT BELTS LOCK IN THE RETRACTED POSITION FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THIS OCCURS RANDOMLY AND LASTS FOR A WEEK OR MORE AT A TIME. I USE THE CAR VERY LITTLE BECAUSE OF THIS. THE LOCAL DEALER MIKE FAMOUS (NOW CLOSED) SAID IT WOULD BE ABOUT $700 TO REPAIR. I THINK THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE SINCE THIS IS OF SAFETY IN NATURE. I CONSIDER SEAT BELTS A VALUABLE PROTECTIVE DEVICE THAT SHOULD NOT FAIL LIKE THIS EVER. I DON'T HAVE ANY CHANCE OF USING SEAT BELTS WHEN I WANT TO USE THE CAR. IF I GO OUT TO USE THE VEHICLE AND THE BELTS ARE LOCKED I DON'T USE IT. NOT TO MENTION SEAT BELT LAWS AND THE TICKET I WOULD GET . *TR

  • Manufacturer: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE LLC
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
  • Summary: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE IS RECALLING CERTAIN AFTERMARKET BALL JOINTS SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SOCKET MAY HAVE BEEN EXCESSIVELY HARDENED WHICH COULD CAUSE IT TO CRACK NEAR THE RETAINING RING GROOVE ALLOWING THE BALL STUD TO SEPARATE UNDER IMPACT LOAD. THE SUBJECT BALL JOINTS WERE SOLD AS FOUR PART NUMBERS, D10945, D10946, G10945, AND G10946. THE AFFECTED CONTROL ARMS, D10945 AND D10946, ARE STAMPED WITH THE FOLLOWING DATES ON THE BALL JOINTS: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, AND 116609. THE G10945 AND G10946 ARE THE SAME PART AS THE D10945 AND D10946 RESPECTIVELY. THEY ARE LABELED DIFFERENTLY DEPENDING ON THE AFTERMARKET CUSTOMER.
  • Consequence: SEPARATION OF THE BALL STUD FROM THE SOCKET OF THE BALL JOINT HOUSING WOULD ALLOW THE CONTROL ARM TO COLLAPSE AND THE WHEEL TO FOLD IN CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE WILL REPLACE THE BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 9, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE AT 1-800-493-4128.
