Chrysler Imperial 1992 problems
The Chrysler Imperial, introduced in 1926, was Chrysler's top-of-the-line vehicle for much of its history. Models were produced with the Chrysler name until 1954, after which it became a standalone brand; and again from 1990 to 1993. The company positioned the cars as a prestige marque to rival Cadillac, Continental, Lincoln, Duesenberg, Pierce Arrow, Cord, and Packard. According to Antique Automobile, "The adjective 'imperial' according to Webster's Dictionary means sovereign, supreme, superior or of unusual size or excellence. The word imperial thus justly befits Chrysler's highest priced model."
For several decades and multiple generations, the Imperial was the exclusive Chrysler and the favorite choice of luxurious transportation for senior executive leadership, government officials, royalty and various celebrities in comparison to the more affordable Chrysler New Yorker. Over the years the appearance, technological advancements and luxurious accommodations updated with the latest trends and fashionable appearances. Limousines, town cars and convertibles were the usual appearances, while special coachwork choices were provided by the industry's best providers, to include Derham, Fleetwood, LeBaron, and others.
The Chrysler Imperial rose was cultivated in 1952 and used to promote the brand.

Common Chrysler Imperial 1992 problems
The Chrysler Imperial, produced from 1990 to 1993, was known for its luxurious accommodations and technological advancements. However, it also faced several issues that were common among its owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported problems with the 1992 Chrysler Imperial:
- Powertrain Issues: The 1992 Chrysler Imperial came standard with a 3.3 V6 engine with 147 hp at 4800 rpm and 183 ft-lbs at 3600 rpm, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. However, this powertrain was criticized for being underpowered compared to its competitors. The Imperial's performance in comparison to other domestic luxury cars was found lacking, with the car's low-end torque being particularly criticized. In response to these criticisms, Chrysler introduced a new 3.8 V6 engine for the 1991 model year, which produced 150 hp at 4400 rpm and 203 ft-lbs at 3200 rpm. However, this engine was also criticized for being less efficient than its competitors and for being outgunned by the de Ville's new-for-1991 4.9 V8.
- Handling Issues: The 1992 Chrysler Imperial was criticized for its handling, which was described as being similar to that of a de Ville or Town Car without offering the interior size, suspension travel, and smooth V8 performance of either or the towing ability of the Lincoln. The Imperial's over-boosted rack-and-pinion steering and severe body roll were also criticized.
- Transmission Issues: The Chrysler Imperial's four-speed UltraDrive transmission was criticized for its electronic operation, which was prone to issues. The transmission was one of the first automatic transmissions commanded by computers, with an ECU that determined shift points via learned behavior based on how the car was driven. However, this electronic operation was known to be problematic, with solenoids replacing the many valves and servos that were part of the normal operation of an automatic transmission.
In conclusion, the 1992 Chrysler Imperial faced several common problems, including electrical issues, powertrain issues, handling issues, and transmission issues. These problems were often related to the car's electronic operation and its underpowered engine, which was criticized for being less efficient and outgunned by its competitors. The Imperial's handling was also criticized for being similar to that of a de Ville or Town Car without offering the same level of performance.

You had a very reliable car that performed well, even after 13-14 years. It was a smooth ride and the interior was in unbelievable condition. Although it was a little slow out of the box and the transmission was a bit rough, you easily passed much newer cars on the interstate. The car was white with burgundy interior and had no rust. Overall, it sounds like you had a great experience with this car!
-
Bought this vehicle 5 years ago and have driven it for 110,000 miles. I had to replace the transmission once and remove the air suspension, but overall, I have enjoyed the car very much. I hope to continue driving it for a few more years. Best regards, Wayne

I have had an amazing experience with my Imperial! I was looking for a car that was not only good-looking, but also dependable, economical, and unique, and the Imperial has exceeded my expectations. I constantly receive compliments on its unique front end, tailights, and formal roofline, and people are always surprised to learn that it's already 15 years old. The interior is absolutely sumptuous, with supple Mark Cross leather seats and a premium sound system that make every ride a luxurious experience. The car handles like a dream, without feeling too floaty like a boat. You'll feel surrounded by genuine luxury and security, and enjoy a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. Although the engine may work a bit hard, the fuel economy is excellent.

This is a unique ride. It looks and behaves differently than other cars in its class. I have driven Lincolns and Cadillacs, but the Imperial has a completely different 'feel'. It all starts with its distinctive appearance, but it goes beyond that. It is a great classic car and probably the best value for the money in its category.

Hi there! It's great to hear from someone else living in a small town. I'm glad to hear that your car has been working well for you these past few years. It sounds like it handles the road really well and is reliable in the winter. Plus, it's awesome that you've been taking such good care of it by keeping it in the garage and changing the oil often. The fact that the tires are in great condition and the transmission was replaced just 3 years ago is a testament to your excellent maintenance. Thanks for sharing!
