The Chevrolet Trax is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors and marketed under the Chevrolet brand since 2013, currently in its second generation.

The first generation model was released globally in 2013 as the smallest, entry-level crossover SUV offering from the brand. Development and production were centered in South Korea by GM Korea. A restyled model was also produced as the Buick Encore in North America and as the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka in Europe.

In several markets, the vehicle was marketed as the Chevrolet Tracker, and as the Holden Trax in Australia and New Zealand. The Trax became available in Canada, Mexico, Germany, South Korea, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, and Europe for the 2013 model year and was released in the United States for the 2015 model year.

In 2019, GM released the replacement of the Trax for China and Latin America, the Tracker. The first-generation Trax continued to be marketed in North America, South Korea, and several other markets until 2022, when it was replaced by the larger second-generation Trax due for the 2024 model year. The second-generation Trax is also marketed in China as the Chevrolet Seeker.

Common 2017 Chevrolet Trax problems

The 2017 Chevrolet Trax has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to engine issues, heater failure, and the vehicle not starting. These problems are more severe than those found in other small SUVs, leading to more expensive repairs as the vehicle ages.

Engine issues are the most widespread complaint among 2017 Trax owners, with problems typically appearing around 35,000 miles. These issues often manifest as check engine lights caused by sensor error codes. Diagnosing the problem requires using an OBD-II scan tool, and fixing it can cost anywhere from $250 for a failed sensor to over $2,000 for more severe issues like valve problems.

Another common problem reported by 2017 Trax owners is the heater failing, which typically occurs around 20,000 miles. The heater core is known to wear out quickly compared to other small SUVs, and replacing it is a labor-intensive process, costing over $1,500 depending on local labor rates.

The vehicle not starting is also a common problem reported by Trax owners, typically occurring around 25,000 miles. The source of the problem can range from a dead battery, which costs around $150 to replace, to more severe issues like fuel pump problems, which can cost over $800 to fix. If your Trax won't start, you will need to diagnose the source of the problem.

There are three recalls on the 2017 Chevy Trax, with the most serious covering the lower control arms on the suspension, which may separate from the vehicle. Chevy will replace the lower control arms on affected models for free.

While the 2017 Trax has several mechanical issues, it does offer a standard 7-inch Touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a more powerful Bose stereo system as an optional upgrade. Standard safety technology is basic, offering a rearview camera, while optional driver assistance features include rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, and lane departure warning.

Despite these features, the 2017 Trax has a poor value rating, with depreciation being worse than other SUVs, losing about 15% of its current value per year. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $10,300 to $20,100, making it less expensive than a Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5. However, the frequent and expensive repairs required due to the mechanical issues make it a less attractive option for many buyers.

In conclusion, the 2017 Chevrolet Trax has several common problems related to engine issues, heater failure, and the vehicle not starting. These problems are more severe than those found in other small SUVs, leading to more expensive repairs as the vehicle ages. While the Trax does offer some entertainment and safety technology features, its poor value rating and frequent mechanical issues make it a less attractive option for many buyers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-21
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3GNCJPSB7HL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I am an [XXX] living on a remote ranch in northern Montana. Owning a 2017 Chevy Trax that has be in the repair shop 6 times since October 2023 to fix the heater fan blower motor that keeps burning up, leaving me without heat or defrost. Driving home on the evening of [XXX] the fan motor burned up again (6th time since Oct. 23) and left me with out heat or defrost. At night, about 10 miles away from home, I tried to drive home. With no heat or defrost my windows started immediately fogging up . I began to try to wipe the windshield with my hand to be able to see to drive. Frost appeared on the inside of the windshield because of being cold outside. I got to my driveway and went to turn in and missed the approach because I could not see. I ended up going down a steep ditch. When I braked my vehicle a stainless steel thermos dislodged from the center console and hit my right knee, injuring me. Chevy Trax and Sonic vehicles from 2014 to 2018 have a defective pigtail from the factory, that causes the heater blower motor to burn up. No recall and as of today Chevy has not manufactured a non defective pig tail. I feel this is a really dangerous situation for people in winter climates. Never knowing when the blower motor will stop working causing impaired visibility due to the car windows fogging up. Spending over $1,800 on repairs, that can never be fixed and as my only form of transportation, I am left with out a safe vehicle to drive. On the Chevy Trax forum you will see pages of people that have the same problem . The local Chevy dealer garage will not make the damage right & are very reluctant to honor the 2 recalls I have had on this car. Arguing with me that there was rodent damage that caused the fan to burn up. Their work order says no damage to the wiring, or no short. Also blaming Landreth automotive. The fan motor burns up with in days of repair even after the last Chevy garage repaired my car themselves, after blaming it on others. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-18
  • VIN: 3GNCJKSB4HL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My Check engine light came on at about 46,000 miles. The mechanic showed me that the oil was burned at looked like chips of metal. He said that the Turbo Charger was cracked also. He replaced everything and flushed the system clean. He video taped the whole repair process. Now, 8,000 miles later, the Check Engine light is back on and the very same problem has repeated itself. I looked on the internet and found HUNDREDS of Blogs with THOUSANDS of Consumers with the same problem. All of them state that the Turbo Charger cracks, leaks into the coolant, over-heats the engine and burns up the oil. They all state that the repair is about $3,000.00. Some are on their 3rd and 4th go-around with this problem. They state that Chevrolet does NOT respond. I, personally, contacted the dealership that sold me my care and reported the problem. I was told that mine was an isolated incident and then they tried to sell me another car. Here is ONLY ONE BLOG with all the consumers' complaints about this ONE MATTER: [XXX] I paid around $35,000.00 for this car at the time of purchase. I paid it off early. You can tell by the low mileage that I do not drive my automobile hard. I keep it well maintained. At 50,000 miles, it cannot be driven until I invest another $3,000.00 in repairs....that I just paid 8,000 miles ago for the the same repeating problem. I need Chevrolet to do one of three things: 1) Resolve the ROOT problem that keeps causing this ongoing problem and fix my car PERMANENTLY of this problem at NO CHARGE; 2) Give me a different model car that has 50,000 miles as an exchange; 3) Refund 2/3 of my money so that I can get a different vehicle. They have left me with no automobile to drive. They act like I am too stupid to understand that the problem lies with them (probably because I am female). They try to convince me to spend yet another 35,000 to 40,000 dollars on a different new car. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Negative 2017 Chevrolet Trax car reviews

  1. Nestor Johnston 2024-10-11

I paid almost $30000.00 for this vehicle, but unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with it. The front driver's seat has already gone bad at only 3700 miles, making loud cracking noises and the bottom of the seat foam has gone flat, uneven, and collapsed. Additionally, the engine and transmission have not been performing well, with the engine making a grinding noise at start-up and the transmission upshifting frequently when accelerated. The all-wheel-drive system has turned off unexpectedly while driving in the snow, and the traction control still works even when turned off manually. The body also creaks over wavy deviations in the road, and the gas mileage is only 17.4 mpg. The ride quality has deteriorated in just 3700 miles, making it uncomfortable to drive. I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle, as it has not met my expectations for a quality car. I have even had to sue GM with the Lemon Law in my state and was able to get back 20% of the car because they deemed it 75% a lemon. The latest issue with the car is an exhaust leak, and I received a notice from GM about purge valve and emissions problems, with an extended warranty on that. Overall, I strongly advise against buying this car and suggest looking for a better quality vehicle.

  2. Fritz Bahringer 2024-10-04

This is the first car I ever bought new. Although it has served me well, it has had a few issues. We have had to replace the valve cover twice and the water pump recently. I am not particularly hard on my vehicles, so I was surprised by these issues. It is time to replace the brakes, but that is normal wear and tear. Unfortunately, my radio barely comes in, even after unscrewing and screwing back in the antenna. It only works for a few miles before becoming staticky. However, the Bluetooth works well as long as it maintains a signal. Despite these issues, I have enjoyed the perfect size of this car, but I think it's time to trade it in.

Your brakes may feel spongy and have a lot of play, and it would be nice if the headlights turned with the car. Additionally, you may experience loud road noise and a bumpy ride. Have you considered air ride to improve your driving experience?

I recently traded in my Equinox lease for a Trax and have been enjoying it, especially with its impressive fuel efficiency of over 34 mpg, sometimes even reaching 37 mpg. However, I have encountered some issues with the door locks malfunctioning and the security alarm going off when I open the door. I took it in for repairs and unfortunately, the problem persisted even after two weeks. Despite being told that only two other cars have experienced this issue, I am concerned as this is a leased car that I am still making payments on and cannot currently drive. As a loyal GM customer with a family who also drives GM cars and a father who worked at GM for over 30 years, I am hoping for a resolution to this problem soon.

I really liked the size and appearance of the car. However, I had to recall it to fix the front wheels bar/rod or something, 1-1/2 years after I purchased it. It was a serious issue that could have caused harm to me or others. Additionally, the engine light began coming on 2-1/2 years after purchasing it. I have owned 3 other new cars and 1 used car in my life, and the Trax has given me more problems in the first 3 years than any of my other cars, even the used one that I had for 9 years. I always kept up with general maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, and air filter changes. After 8 to 9 years, I never experienced having to constantly check what's wrong with the car because the engine light keeps coming on or the car sputtering. The cost of all these issues has been too much for me to handle, and I cannot afford it. I believe that after so many issues, the price should be lowered or the car should be taken back, and I should be let out of the loan. I apologize for the negative review, but I feel like I may be saving someone's life. You never know who's going through depression or anxiety these days. That's why I had to let someone know that I am praying for every owner of the Trax that's struggling financially. You'll be okay. Don't give up!

I was a bit unsure about the Trax at first, but after seeing it and taking it for a test drive, I fell in love! It's such an attractive little SUV with great mileage. I couldn't be happier!

I fell in love with my girlfriend's Rootbeer brown car in 2016. What really won me over was how easily it zigzagged through traffic and how simple it was to maneuver in the grocery store parking lot. It was a fun little ride, especially with my girlfriend who always changed her mind about which store to shop at or where to park (why do girls do that? lol). Anyways, the car was perfect for carrying her and her little fluff ball dog. The dog was kind of cool with an awesome attitude. A year later, I wanted to trade in my 1996 Honda Civic. I work as an electrician at one of the biggest multi-car dealerships in the state of Washington, so I know most of the people there. I tried an internet buy, but unfortunately, the people I dealt with were worthless and brain-dead. They priced themselves at $26,000 for a 2016 car with 5200 miles. I found one in Renton, Washington with only 2000 miles. I texted the guy and told him I wouldn't pay a cent over $17,000. I ended up getting a 2017 Chevy Premier that was fully loaded.

Good car, lots of features. The only issue is that I was unable to use Bluetooth voice controls to make phone calls. It's like Bluetooth lite even though the owner's manual says you can. However, after several attempts, the GM team got it to allow full hands-free voice controls. I really appreciate the hard work put in by GM and the local dealer to solve the issue. Thank you both!

My experience with the Bozarth Lone Tree location has been less than ideal. However, I must say that the owner has been very helpful throughout the process. Unfortunately, there were some issues with the car I purchased, such as incorrect mileage information on the title, and reluctance to clean the car before releasing it to me. Additionally, there were problems with service maintenance on issues that existed prior to the purchase. Despite this, I was able to get these problems addressed after complaining to the owner, Ed Bozarth. I was amazed and pleased with the solutions he presented to address these problems. I also appreciate the manager of maintenance and his staff member, Ed, for addressing an exterior problem with my car after yet another poor customer service issue erupted. Although my experience was traumatic, I hope that the dealership will improve their customer service and integrity in the future.

You got your 2017 LT used in August of 2017 with only 820 miles on the ticket. The Trax has great fuel economy, great reliability and it fits your needs well. The only downsides you can think of are that the sight lines are pretty awful when changing lanes and to have any kind of safe view out the back you need to lower the rear head rests. The ride isn’t exactly smooth either. But all in all, if it towed more, you would get another Trax.
