2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer problems
The Chevrolet Trailblazer (9BYC) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand since 2020. It is the smallest crossover from Chevrolet, slotting below the Trax.
Overview
The Trailblazer was launched on April 16, 2019, at the 18th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition alongside the Tracker, that replaced the outgoing Trax. The Trailblazer is aimed for developed markets, while the Tracker is aimed for emerging markets. Developed by GM Korea, the Trailblazer is assembled in Incheon, South Korea, while the Chinese-market model is produced in Yantai, Shandong, China, by SAIC-GM.
The Trailblazer made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2019, and sales began in early 2020 as a 2021 model year vehicle. There are five trim levels available: L, LS, LT, Activ, and RS. The latter two came standard with dual exhaust and top of the line features. The Activ and RS models also feature a contrasting color roof.
It was launched in the Philippines in October 2021. Imported from South Korea, it notably reused the nameplate from the previous Colorado-based Trailblazer which was discontinued in the same year.
On January 16, 2020, the Trailblazer was launched in South Korea. The Korean-market model is larger in dimension than Trailblazers sold in other markets, with a length of 4,425 mm (174.2 in) and width of 1,810 mm (71.3 in).

- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, A FUEL FILTER FITTING CAN BECOME DISCONNECTED. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE ENGINE, A NO-START CONDITION WOULD RESULT AND FUEL WOULD BE PUMPED OUT THE FUEL FILTER ONTO THE GROUND.
- Consequence: IF THE FITTING BECOMES DISCONNECTED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, THE ENGINE WOULD STOP DUE TO INADEQUATE FUEL SUPPLY AND CAUSE A LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST. IF AN IGNITION SOURCE WERE PRESENT, FUEL LEAKAGE FROM A DISCONNECTED FUEL FILTER FITTING COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILTER QUICK CONNECT RETAINERS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 20, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020. GMC AT 1-800-462-8782, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER, MINI VANS, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES HAVE AN AIR BAG INFLATOR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE THAT COULD FRACTURE AT A WELD DURING A DEPLOYMENT.
- Consequence: PIECES OF THE INFLATOR COULD STRIKE AND INJURE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS AND THE AIR BAG CUSHION WOULD NOT INFLATE FULLY, REDUCING THE CAPABILITY OF THE BAG TO PROTECT THE DRIVER.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT, AND REPLACE, IF NECESSARY, THE AIR BAG MODULE ASSEMBLY ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 15, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-800-521-7300, CADILLAC AT 1-800-458-8006, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, GMC AT 1-800-462-8782, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537, OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4-WHEEL DRIVE. THE CALIBRATION OF THE TRANSFER CASE CONTROL MODULE COULD CAUSE INSUFFICIENT HIGH SPEED GEAR ENGAGEMENT.
- Consequence: IF THE GEAR IS NOT ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE CAN ROLL WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS IN "PARK" AND A CRASH COULD RESULT WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE TRANSFER CASE CONTROL MODULE CALIBRATION TO INCREASE GEAR ENGAGEMENT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN NOVEMBER 6, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020 OR GMC AT 1-800-462-8782.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES (4 WHEEL-DRIVE). SOME OF THESE VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH A RANGE SHIFT COLLAR IN THE TRANSMISSION TRANSFER CASE THAT CONTAINS CRACKS.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN A COMPLETE FRACTURE OF THE RANGE SHIFT COLLAR AND SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF VEHICLE FORWARD AND REVERSE GEARS, AND THE INABILITY TO MAINTAIN "PARK" POSITION. THIS INCREASES THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH RESULTING FROM UNINTENDED MOVEMENT OF A PARKED VEHICLE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASES AND UPDATE THE CONTROL MODULE CALIBRATION. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 6, 2001.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM BRACKETS MAY FRACTURE. THIS FRACTURE COULD RESULT IN SEPARATION OF THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM FROM THE FRAME.
- Consequence: A SEPARATION COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, RESULTING IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LEFT AND RIGHT FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM BRACKETS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN BY TELEPHONE ON APRIL 4, 2001. THE FOLLOWUP LETTER TO CONSUMERS WAS MAILED MAY 3, 2001. This car was purchased in 2002 and driven until a terrible accident in 2010. Thankfully, no one was hurt due to the car's safety features, but unfortunately, it was totaled. Despite this, it was the best car ever and I am now on the lookout for another one.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your LTZ 4WD that you purchased 2 years and 60k miles ago! It's great to know that everyone loves the way the car looks, handles, and how quiet the ride is. I can understand how you must have had a tough time choosing between the Mercedes, X5, 4 Runner, and the MDX, but it's fantastic that the Trailblazer had the best combination of price, power, and features. It sounds like zipping around town is so much more fun in your Trailblazer than in your Yukon. Although the car has had some electronic problems, including electronic side mirrors (which have been replaced 6 times now at the dealer), dashboard power failures, occasional tendency to try to shift into 4wd Low! on the highway at 80 mph, and alarm problems, it's great to hear that overall you've been very happy with the car.

Bought new. I'm so glad I did! It's really fun to drive and I'm impressed with how smooth the engine and automatic transmission are. The height is perfect and it's easy to get in and out of. I did have a couple of minor problems with the wipers and auto moisture detect, but the dealer fixed them and I haven't had any further issues. I previously owned a GMC Yukon, which was a nice vehicle, but the Trailblazer is even better. I would definitely buy it again. One thing to note is that the driver's side rearview mirror changes position when the key is removed and the engine is restarted.

I live in the mountains and have driven 61K miles on both Sierra Snow and California Freeways. I have had no unusual problems with this car and I consider it to be several steps above the 96 Grand Cherokee that I traded in. My only minor gripes are that the rear visibility when backing up is not great and the ground clearance is not quite the same as the Jeep. However, overall it is a much nicer package and is VERY capable in the snow.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my vehicle. I bought it new and have owned it for two years now. Overall, I've been extremely happy with it. While the handling is a little sloppy and the gas mileage is average, I've had no problems with it. Thanks for listening!

I really enjoyed owning this car. It was spacious enough for my family of five and even had some extra room. Unfortunately, I did experience some issues with the transmission. While it was covered under warranty the first time, I had to pay for repairs the other two times. The rear air conditioner also had some problems and needed to be repaired twice. After the third transmission failure in August 2005, I decided to trade it in. Although I miss the car, the repair and maintenance costs were becoming too expensive for me to handle, totaling over $4,000 in just 15 months after my warranty expired.

This vehicle has been in for service every nine and a half days since I picked it up. The problems range from a defective right front axle seal, to a severely leaking rear liftglass, to complete autotrac system failure, to the flooding of the driver's floor because the exterior seal was not tight enough. Counting the visit later this week for sticking steering wheel buttons, a mildew smell from the a/c, and parts that were replaced that now have to be replaced again, this vehicle has been out of my hands for almost twenty days in the six months of my ownership of it.

I purchased my 2002 LTZ brand new, and although I have experienced some issues such as squeaky hood hinges, a fallen rear gate strap, four safety recalls, and a cracked cylinder bore liner (which was promptly addressed by a factory recall), I am confident in the expertise of the mechanics who are currently working on my vehicle. Despite these setbacks, I have only driven 7000 miles and look forward to many more trouble-free miles ahead.

I have had this car in for service at least 10 times and unfortunately lost a lot of money in its resale value. I have had some issues with the build quality and some of the problems I have had were deemed as 'could not duplicate' by the dealership and went unfixed. Now, I am trying to sell this car and unfortunately not getting the price I was hoping for. This is the fourth Chevy in a row I have owned that has not performed well, so I hope you can learn from my experience. Thank you for considering my feedback!

My parents have always been fans of GM/Chevy cars. I remember going with them to buy their first car, a 1962 Impala Station Wagon. When they got their Trailblazer, I was there with them and it was quite an experience! Unfortunately, they faced some issues that many others have also reported, such as stalling at lights, rough idle, and high rapid idle for no reason. At 32,000 miles, they had to deal with these issues. Later, at 40,000 miles, they faced incorrect inside/outside temperature readings and inability to use climate control, which was supposedly unrepairable. They also had trouble with seatbelts that wouldn't release and just kept getting tighter and tighter since the purchase. Despite these issues, my parents still love their Chevy cars and are always excited to get a new one.
