The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.

In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.

Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

The GMC Savana 1500, a full-sized van produced in 2012, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include tail light wiring in the cargo area being damaged, the check engine light and misfire due to stuck fuel injectors, and problems with the fuel level sensor.

Damaged tail light wiring in the cargo area is a common problem with the GMC Savana 1500. This issue can cause the tail lights to malfunction, which can be a safety hazard for both the driver and other vehicles on the road. The wiring in the cargo area may become damaged due to frequent loading and unloading of cargo, or from the weight of the cargo itself.

Another common problem with the GMC Savana 1500 is the check engine light and misfire due to stuck fuel injectors. This issue can cause a decrease in engine performance, and can also lead to a decrease in fuel efficiency. Stuck fuel injectors can be caused by a variety of factors, including the use of low-quality fuel, or a lack of regular maintenance. This issue can be diagnosed by a mechanic using a diagnostic tool, and can be resolved by cleaning or replacing the affected fuel injectors.

The fuel level sensor is another common problem with the GMC Savana 1500. The fuel level sensor can become faulty due to a variety of factors, including exposure to moisture or debris, or from wear and tear over time. This issue can be diagnosed by a mechanic using a diagnostic tool, and can be resolved by replacing the affected fuel level sensor.

In addition to these common problems, the GMC Savana 1500 has also been reported to have issues with excessive oil consumption, leaking coolant from a cracked intake manifold, and defective speakers. These issues can lead to a decrease in engine performance, and can also lead to more serious problems if not addressed in a timely manner.

Leaking coolant from a cracked intake manifold can be caused by wear and tear over time, or by exposure to extreme temperatures. This issue can be diagnosed by a mechanic using a diagnostic tool, and can be resolved by replacing the affected intake manifold.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-07-11
  • VIN: 1GDS8DC43C1
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON MY SECOND GMC SAVANNA 1500 VAN, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT FUEL IS LEAKING OUT THE SIDE OF MY FUEL FILLER PIPE, SLOWLY THEN HEAVILY WHEN I FUEL IT UP. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE I HAD WITH MY OLD 2003 GMC SAVANNA 1500 VAN. THERE WAS A NATIONAL RECALL ON THE 2003 GMC SAVANNA, YET THERE IS NOT ONE FOR MY 2012. I DID NOT REALIZE THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FILLER TUBE UNTIL I BROUGHT IT IN FOR SERVICE, TO CHECK THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT. A MONTH AGO, THE ERROR CODE WAS A SMALL EVAP LEAK. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SAID THAT THE FILLER TUBE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED SINCE IT IS RUSTED OUT OF THE SIDES. I AM A WHEELCHAIR USER, WHERE I NORMALLY DON'T HAVE TO FILL UP MY TANK. YET, AFTER GETTING THE DIAGNOSIS, I HAD TO FILL UP MY TANK SINCE IT WAS ON EMPTY. WHILE FILLING IT UP, I SMELLED GAS. I THEN NOTICED A PUDDLE FORMING UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. I THOUGHT ABOUT STOPPING, YET I WENT SLOWER. THIS DID NOT SLOW DOWN THE RAPID DRIPPINGS. SO I CONTINUED AS USUAL. IT WAS GETTING BIGGER WHERE IT WAS STARTING TO EXTEND BEYOND THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THEN IT WAS NEARLY FILLED UP WHEN I HEAR THE GAS SPILLING OUT ONTO THE LEFT REAR TIRE. I QUICKLY SHUT OFF THE NOZZLE, AND WIPED UP THE EXCESS FUEL OFF THE TIRE.
