1991 Dodge Stealth problems
The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a front-engine, all-wheel/front-wheel drive grand touring/sports car manufactured and marketed by Mitsubishi from 1990 until 2000 over three different generations. Manufactured in a three-door hatchback coupé body style in Nagoya, Japan, the 2+2 four-seaters were marketed in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) as the GTO, and globally as 3000GT. In North America, it was sold both as the Mitsubishi 3000GT (1991–1999) and the Dodge Stealth (1991–1996), a badge engineered, mechanically identical captive import. As a collaborative effort between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, Chrysler was responsible for the Stealth's exterior styling.
The car was based on Mitsubishi's Sigma/Diamante and retained their transverse mounted 3-liter, 24-valve V6 engines and front-wheel-drive layout. The GTO's engines were naturally aspirated or with twin-turbochargers and were also available with active aerodynamics (automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers), four-wheel-steering, full-time all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension.
Mitsubishi marketed a retractable hardtop variant, which were engineered and converted from coupé models in California by ASC, and sold as the GT Spyder or VR4 Spyder for model years 1993–1995. These were the first fully automated retractable hardtop marketed since the 1959 Ford Skyliner.
The JDM model took its name from the Galant GTO, a two-door hardtop coupé marketed by the company in the early 1970s, which in turn took its name from the Ferrari 250 GTO, short for Gran Turismo Omologata – "Omologata" signifying that it met motorsport homologation requirements.

THIS REPAIR/PARTS COST ME UPWARDS OF 2500 DOLLARS. I BELIEVE THAT ITS THE MANUFACTURERS RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE THESE TRANSMISSIONS RECALLED BECAUSE OF POTENTIAL PROBLEMS THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD I BEEN DRIVING. - Manufacturer: DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
- Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES BUILT BY MITSUBISHI MOTOR CORPORATION FOR DAIMLERCHRYSLER, A CONDITION EXISTS THAT ALLOWS OIL TO LEAK FROM THE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE TRANSFER CASE.
- Consequence: LOW OIL LEVELS IN THE TRANSFER CASE COULD CAUSE BEARING DAMAGE AND RESULT IN DRIVE TRAIN LOCKUP, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TRANSFER CASE FOR INDICATIONS OF OIL LEAKAGE. VEHICLES THAT HAVE NO OIL LEAKAGE WILL HAVE THE TRANSFER CASE OIL CHANGED. VEHICLES THAT HAVE OIL LEAKAGE WILL HAVE THE TRANSFER CASE RESEALED OR REPLACED IF NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DECEMBER 2, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

- Consequence: THE SAFETY BELTS WOULD NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION TO AN OCCUPANT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CHECK THE CONDITION AND OPERATION OF BOTH FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLES AND CAREFULLY INSPECT THE RED RELEASE BUTTON FOR ANY BREAKS OR CRACKS. THEY SHOULD ENSURE THAT BOTH BUCKLES ARE OPERATING PROPERLY BY INSERTING EACH LATCH PLATE INTO ITS BUCKLE, TUGGING ON THE BELT TO MAKE SURE THE LATCH IS SECURELY LOCKED, AND THEN PRESSING THE RELEASE BUTTON. THE LATCH PLATE SHOULD POP OUT OF THE BUCKLE WHEN THE BUTTON IS PRESSED. IF EITHER RELEASE BUTTON SHOWS A SIGN OF BREAKING OR CRACKING OR IF EITHER BUCKLE FAILS TO OPERATE PROPERLY, OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CONTACT THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE BUCKLE REPLACED OR REPAIRED, FREE OF CHARGE. Great job!

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed driving it very much. It's unfortunate that you have to sell it, but I understand that the 'Lady' is getting old. It's impressive that she still has the ability to turn heads and zooms through the highways. Best of luck with the sale!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that I currently drive a Stealth and I absolutely love it. It's incredibly fast and has plenty of room for modifications. Overall, I think it's an excellent car.

I've owned my 1991 non-turbo R/T for about 3 years now and it's been an absolute joy to drive! It handles corners like a dream, is comfortable for long trips, and has decent performance (although I do wish I had a TT!). Despite being rear-ended twice, once very seriously (the other driver totaled their car, and I suffered permanent back injuries), my car only needed minor repairs - it's built like a tank! I've kept up with routine maintenance, such as the timing belt, water pump, and heater hoses, and have also had to replace the clutch due to wear and tear from the previous owner. Overall, I'm absolutely in love with this car and it's going to be tough to part with it for something more practical.

I purchased this car as a salvaged rebuild. Some Russians put it back together. Yeah, I know what you think, but this car is still amazing. My mechanic said the car is made of two cars welded together, but done very well. Whew! I saw my first Stealth in 1991 and said that someday one would be mine. In 2004, after searching for 2 years, I purchased my rocket. It now has a VR4 motor under the hood and some upgrades to push HP to 435HP. Hardly anything can beat it. This machine is great, the body flows, and the stance says 'don't mess with me'. I get yells from young girls trying to get my attention, but my wife is my girl. Still fun though. Keeping this all my life.

I bought my car from an older gentleman who took excellent care of it. It's a beautiful royal blue with a twin turbo hood that resembles the Batmobile. However, I was disappointed to find out that it does not have a true Dodge drivetrain, but rather a Mitsubishi one. Perhaps this is why the motor and transmission don't last long, but mine has because I have babied it. I will be selling it soon. If it had a real Hemi like a 426, I might have kept it.
