2000 Chevrolet Express problems
The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.
In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.
Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

- Passlock Security: The Passlock security system in the 2000 Chevrolet Express has been reported to cause issues for some owners, with one article stating that it can do the same thing to the actual owner as it does to thieves, preventing them from starting the car.
- Power Window Switch Issues: More than 200,000 Express and GMC Savana vans, including the 2000 model, have been reported to have issues with the power window switches, which can corrode and cause the switch to overheat, smoke, melt, and potentially cause a fire.

It is important to note that these issues are based on complaints from owners of the 2000 Chevrolet Express and may not be representative of all vehicles of this make and model. However, these issues should be taken into consideration when purchasing a used vehicle of this make and model.

- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: GENERAL GRABBER HTS BELT SLIPPED WHILE TRAVELING AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEEDS ON AUG 23, 2020. THIS IS THE 5TH TIRE FAILURE (SLIPPED BELT) OR THIS EXACT TIRE FOR THIS VEHICLE. THIS TIRE HAD 6,721 MILES ON IT. GENERAL HAS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THEIR 10 PLY TIRES. WERE IT NOT FOR MY UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO DETECT A SLIPPED BELT, A SEVERE ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED! NHSTA SHOULD PERFORM A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION; AS AN ENGINEER WITH EXCELLENT DOCUMENTATION, I COULD CONTRIBUTE VALUABLE DATA.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-31
- VIN: 1GBJG31J4Y1
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: PURCHASED 4 NEW AUTOGUARD (BCT) LT 225-75R16 TIRES, ON CLEARANCE FROM WM IN JULY 2017. INSTALLED ALL 4 ON REAR OF A 29' 2000 FOREST RIVER SUNSEEKER A WEEK LATER, PRIOR TO OUR FAMILY SUMMER ROAD TRIP IN JULY 2017. AFTER APPROX. ONLY 5000 MILES OF USAGE, THE RIGHT REAR INT. TIRE HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE ON JULY 31 2019 WHILE TRAVELLING AT ABOUT 55MPH, UP AN INCLINE, JUST BEFORE EXIT 145 ON INTERSTATE 81 SOUTH, NEAR HAZELTON PENNSILVANIA 18249. THIS CAUSED DAMAGE TO OTHER RR TIRE, RV WHEELWELL, RV HOLDING TANKS AND RV ELECTRICAL. REPLACED BOTH RR TIRES AT A LOCAL SHOP, INFLATED ALL 4 TO 75PSI. BELIEVING IT WAS A ONE OFF, COUNTED OUR BLESSINGS CONTINUED SOUTH ON I-81 ON OUR SUMMER ROAD TRIP TO THE OBX. ON OUR RETURN, APPROX 1000 MILES LATER, I NOTICED AN INCREASING ROUGH VIBRATION FROM THE LEFT REAR SIDE THIS TIME. VIBRATIONS INCREASED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE OVER 50MPH. I CHECKED THE TIRE PRESSURE OF ALL 4 REAR TIRES SEVERAL TIMES. THEY WERE ALL STILL AT 75PSI (MAX 80 PSI DUAL). I MADE 5 STOPS AT SEVERAL RIG REPAIR AND SMALLER TIRE RETAILERS OVER 2 STATES REQUESTING TO CHECK THE LR WHEEL BALANCING OF THE RV, BELIEVING I HAD LOST SOME WHEEL LEADS. NOT ONE WOULD TAKE A 29' CLASS C IN TO CHECK THE CAUSE OF THE VIBRATION. LIMPED BACK SLOWLY FOR 300 MILES, RETURNED TO THE SAME TIRE DEALER ON AUGUST 16 2019 WHO DISCOVERED THAT BOTH LEFT REAR TIRES WERE NOT ROADWORTHY, ONE WAS EXCESSIVELY WORN, DEFORMED, HAD INTERIOUR BULGING AND INTERIOR BLISTERING AND APPARENT TREAD SEPARATION. FROM THE TIRE RADIAL! 4 TECHNICIANS HAD NEVER SEEN SUCH PREMATURES DEFORMATIES. THEY BELIEVED IT WOULD BLOW IF THEY TRIED TO REINFLATE IT. I TOOK PICTURES AND VIDEOS AND KEPT THE TIRES AS EVIDENCE. I PURCHASED 2 MORE TIRES OF THE SAME MAKE AND SIZE. OBSERVATIONS: 2 OUT 4 TIRES WERE SIGNIFICANTLY WORN OUT FROM NORMAL USE. MILES DRIVEN WAS BETWEEN 5-6K MILES. TIREDOT OJ 20XB2 1113 0413 0413
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-07-12
- VIN: 1GBFG15R8Y1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 1 OF MANY ISSUES WITH THIS VAN. 62000 MILES. REAR BRAKE LINE BLEW, LUCKILY IN MY DRIVEWAY. UPON INSPECTION ALL THE LINES IN THE REAR NEED REPLACED. FUNNY THING IS THE BOTTOMSIDE OF THE VAN IS AS CLEAN AS CAN BE. I BOUGHT THIS VAN 2 YEARS OLD WITH 24000 MILES, I'M EXTREMELY PICKY ABOUT MY VEHICLES AND AM A MAINTENANCE NUT. ALWAYS GARAGED, WAXED NUMEROUS TIME A YEAR, SYNTHETIC FLUIDS..... HERE IS A LIST OF WHAT I REMEMBER HAS GONE WRONG WITH THIS VAN. INTAKE GASKETS, TWICE. FRONT BUMPER REINFORCEMENT ROTTED OUT 40,000 MILES, REAR CHROME BUMPER ROTTED 40,000 MILES, AC LINE CORRODED THRU, TRANSMISSION GRENADED AT 42,000 MILE(SUN SHIELD FAILURE?), LEFT WINDOW MOTOR HAS DEAD SPOT IN IT FROM DAY 1. REMEMBER THIS IS A VERY WELL MAINTAINED, ALWAYS GARAGED, MAINLY DRIVEN FOR VACATIONS. GM IS WELL AWARE OF ALL THESE ISSUES AND WOULDN'T HELP ON ANY. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-01-10
- VIN: 1GAGG29R6Y1
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I OWN 2000 CHEVY EXPRESS 2500 PASSENGER VAN. I BOUGHT THE VAN NEW FROM THE DEALER AND WITHIN TWO YEARS THE SIDE DOOR HINGES HAD SEIZED UP. THIS RESULTED IN THE INSIDE DOOR TRIM PANELS BREAKING AS THE PASSENGERS IN THE REAR TRIED TO CLOSE THE DOORS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEIR WAY OF CORRECTING THE PROBLEM WAS TO HAMMER OUT THE HINGE PINS AND REPLACE THEM WITH NEW ONES. WITHIN ONE YEAR THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED AND HAS PERSISTED. THERE IS NO WAY TO LUBRICATE THE HINGES TO ALLOW FOR THE DOORS TO OPEN AND CLOSE EASILY. I RECENTLY TOOK THE VAN BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE NEW WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS TO CUT OFF THE OLD HINGES AND WELD NEW ONES ON. THE PARTS DEPARTMENT EVEN HAS "HINGE REPLACEMENT" PACKAGES SET UP BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS SO COMMON. THE NEW FIX IS ESTIMATED AT OVER $1,700.00. THIS DOES NOT EVEN INCLUDE THE REPLACEMENT COSTS OF THE INSIDE DOOR TRIM PANELS THAT ARE STILL BROKEN. (IF THE DOOR IS CLOSED TOO HARD THE DOOR PANELS OVERLAP AND STICK MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE. WE HAVE TO CARRY A STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER IN THE VAN AT ALL TIMES JUST TO GET THE DOOR PANELS UNSTUCK). THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM THAT GM WAS AND IS STILL FULLY AWARE OF AND YET NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE HINGES TO BE REPLACED AT THEIR COST. THE FAULTY HINGES MAKE THE PASSENGER VAN WORTHLESS AND AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD FOR ANY OWNER. *TR

This vehicle has been fantastic! It's amazing that in 90,000 miles, the only issues I've had were a bad computer due to a corrosion issue and an intake manifold gasket. Despite these minor setbacks, it still runs like it's brand new!
-
Congratulations on your growing family! I can understand the hesitation in choosing between a full-size van, a mini, or a Suburban. However, it sounds like you made the right choice with the full-size van, especially with the cargo room it provides. It's great to hear that you have no regrets and that you can comfortably fit your whole family with plenty of cargo room to spare. The 5.0 V8 engine sounds impressive, with its smoothness and power, and it's great to know that towing up to 5000 lbs is no problem. The transmission is also very smooth, which is a testament to the quality of the GM product. With a mileage of about 15/18, it's also quite efficient. It's wonderful to hear that your van has been reliable and has never needed repairs (except for one body repair). It's no wonder that both you and your wife love it!
-
I've had this vehicle for six years and it has 218,000 miles on it. Despite recently experiencing some transmission issues, the van still runs great and starts every morning. I am definitely considering purchasing another Express in the future. While the interior parts may not hold up too well, the performance and mechanical reliability more than make up for it.
-
Excellent vehicle! You'll love the comfortable ride. It's perfect for a relaxing get-a-way and ideal for long trips!

I have a Mark III conversion van, so the interior is better than standard. While it's a good road warrior, I've had a few issues with it such as the ABS going out at 48k, the A/C at 25k, and a drive shaft leaking oil at 27k. The brakes are inadequate for such a large vehicle. At 59k, some bits and pieces of trim are departing or breaking, and I share the concern about vibrating rearview mirrors. The side door is also very flimsy. However, I am convinced that Chevy could build a better van if they tried. Now that my kids are bigger, our next car will be a Subaru, which I expect to last forever.

Hello! We've had our Chevy G1500 conversion van for 16 months now. When we bought it, it only had 62000 miles on it, but now it has 76000 miles. Unfortunately, we've had to spend some money on repairs in the past 16 months. We've had to replace the brakes twice, which cost us $600, and we also had to spend $1700 on a new transmission, $700 on the A/C (condenser), and $200 on a water pump. All in all, we've spent $3200 on repairs so far, and we're worried that there might be more to come.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my van. I bought it used and unfortunately, at 50,000 miles, the fuel pump went bad. I've had some trouble with the air conditioning too, and have spent over $1000.00 fixing it. I was hoping for better performance from a GM product, but unfortunately, I've had some issues. Additionally, I've noticed that the fit and finish could be improved, as the outside rear view mirrors vibrate excessively. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I see that you've recently purchased a vehicle to pull your camping trailer. That's great! It's wonderful to hear that after 7 years, your vehicle is still running smoothly and reliably. However, I understand that you may have some concerns about the interior fit and finish. It seems that the plastic doesn't fit cleanly and the outside mirrors vibrate. I hope that these issues don't detract too much from your overall enjoyment of your vehicle. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!
