Chevrolet Express 2500 problems
The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.
In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.
Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common Chevrolet Express 2500 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Express 2500, here are some common problems with this vehicle:
- Tail Light Wiring in Cargo Area May be Damaged:
- Damage to the tail light wiring in the cargo area can cause one or more rear lights to stop working. This problem is often a result of normal wear and tear from using the cargo space of the van. Replacing the tail light harness and bulbs can resolve this issue, with the harness costing around $30 and an additional $3 for each bulb replaced.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks:
- Another reported issue is the leakage of coolant or engine oil from the intake manifold gasket. This leak can lead to external or internal leaks, potentially causing engine damage. Replacing the intake manifold gasket is the recommended solution, with repair costs estimated around $500.
- Coolant Leak and Engine Overheating:
- Owners have also faced problems with coolant leaks resulting from water pump issues, leading to engine overheating. Resolving this problem involves replacing the water pump, which can cost between $300-$550.
- Damaged Front Electrical Components:
- Excessive water usage when cleaning the van interior can damage various electrical components under the front carpet or rubber mat. It is advised not to hose down the rear cargo mat to prevent this damage.
These common problems reported by Chevrolet Express 2500 owners highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt repairs to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.

THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND UNACCEPTABLE SINCE GM KNOWS THE SITUATION FOR ALL VEHICLES IN 10 THOUSAND+ OCCURRING BETWEEN 2003-2009 AND I HAVE MET HUNDREDS WHO EXPERIENCE THIS FRIGHTENING DILEMMA. THE HEADLIGHT LOSS IS SERIOUS OCCURRING UNEXPECTEDLY IN NIGHT TIME DRIVING. THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH MY LIGHTS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO A NUMBER OF DEALERS WHO SHOULD KNOW HOW TO FIX BUT DO NOT. ALSO BROUGHT TO A NUMBER OF INDEPENDENTS IN SEARCH OF FIXING THE FAILING HEADLIGHTS TO NO AVAIL(INCLUDE THE FACT THAT I CONTINUE TO SEARCH AND PAY FOR NO SOLUTIONS ON A VEHICLE SYSTEM GM KNOWS IS BROKEN ACROSS ALL THEIR MODELS). THIS OCCURS WEEKLY AND REPEATEDLY. MY VAN IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS FAILING ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS AT HIGH SPEED OF 70 MILES AN HOUR FAR FROM A SAFE TRAVEL DISTANCE. WHO CAN DRIVE IN THE DARK WHEN LIGHTS GO OUT UNEXPECTEDLY? HAVEN'T CARS BEEN MADE FOR OVER 100 YEARS? CAN WE LEARN FROM THE JAPANESE HOW TO WORK THIS SAFELY AND RESPONSIBLY WITHOUT FAULTY LIGHTING SYSTEMS. THERE IS NO REASON TO BE SITTING AT A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP GETTING NOT REPAIRED. EVERY MECHANIC WHO CHECKED IT INTO THE SERVICE CENTERS TOLD ME. THIS VAN IS UNSAFE TO BE DRIVING!!!

MY INJURIES WERE NOT MAJOR AND I DECLINED TREATMENT SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE I NEEDED TO DEAL WITH THE WRECKER AND SUCH. END OF PREAMBLE I WAS LEAVING THE GARAGE AT THE CONDO WHERE I LIVE. THERE IS A STEEP INITIAL GRADE ENDING IN A 90 DEG. LEFT FOLLOWED BY A MORE MODEST DECLINE ENDING AT A STREET WITH TRAFFIC. BECAUSE THE RAMP IS NARROW AND EVERYTHING DISAPPEARS FROM THE DRIVER'S VIEW, I WAS TAPPING THE BRAKES AND CHECKING THE POSITION OF THE BACK WHEELS, WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL CEASED TO FUNCTION. I TRIED IT AT LEAST TWICE AND THEN GOT BACK TO STEERING. AT THE TIME MY ASSUMPTION WAS THAT THE ENGINE HAD STALLED, EVEN THOUGH THAT HAS NEVER OCCURRED PREVIOUSLY. I MADE THE LEFT TURN, BUT I WAS BECOMING ANXIOUS ABOUT MY SPEED. I CHOSE TO SWERVE AGAINST THE ONE EARTH BANK AVAILABLE, AND THAT RESULTED IN AN OVER TURNING OF THE VEHICLE. ONCE BACK ON ITS WHEELS THE VEHICLE STARTED, RAN, AND DROVE WITH NO EVIDENT ABNORMALITIES. GIVEN TIME TO CONSIDER WHAT HAD HAPPENED, I REALIZED THAT THE IGNITION HAD GONE OFF, I SUPPOSE THAT IT MUST SHARE A COMMON SWITCH WITH THE CARS PRESENTLY IN RECALL, AND I WOULD LIKE THE SAME CONSIDERATION. *TR

- Report Received Date: 2016-05-18
- Manufacturer: Mobility Works (WMK Inc.)
- Components: EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
- Summary: Mobility Works (WMK Inc.) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Ford E-150, E-250, E-350, and Chevrolet Express 2500 vans manufactured January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2015, and equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts by Ricon. The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack. When the vehicle's doors are opened, the platform may fall onto the lift operator, increasing their risk of injury.
- Remedy: Mobility Works will notify owners, and Ricon dealers will inspect the link arms for damage or for displaced bearings. The platform will be inspected for cracks. Any damaged parts will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on June 17, 2016. Owners may contact Mobility Works customer service at 1-800-769-8267.
