2002 Cadillac Seville problems
The Cadillac Seville is a mid-size luxury car manufactured by Cadillac from the 1976 to 2004 model years as a smaller-sized, premium model. It was replaced by the STS in 2004 for the 2005 model year.
Origin of the name
The name of "Cadillac's first small car" was selected over a revival of LaSalle or the GM design staff's preference, LaScala, primarily because, as noted by GM Marketing Director Gordon Horsburgh, "It had no negatives." The initial suggestion was "Leland" in honor of one of the make's founders but it was rejected because most buyers wouldn't understand the reference and Henry Leland had also founded rival Lincoln.
Hundreds of suggestions were considered: after extensive research, LaSalle was the top pick with St. Moritz a distant second, trailed further by Seville. A troubled past (LaSalle) and difficult pronunciation (St. Moritz) led to the eventual selection of the Seville nameplate.
Seville is the name of a Spanish province and its capital, renowned for its history and treasures of art and architecture. Cadillac had first used the nameplate for a two-door hardtop version of the 1956 Eldorado. 1960 was the last model year for the Eldorado Seville, returning in 1967 under a different name.

Common 2002 Cadillac Seville problems
The 2002 Cadillac Seville, particularly the STS model, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are some of the issues and their details:
- Interior Design: While some owners have praised the interior design of the 2002 Cadillac Seville, others have criticized it for being unattractive and not award-winning as claimed by the manufacturer. The design of the interior may not be to everyone's taste, and it is a subjective matter.
- Dashboard Lights and Radio Issues: A few owners have reported that after starting the car, the dashboard lights up with several warning lights, including ABS, airbag, and traction control. Additionally, the stock Bose radio resets to 12 o'clock, and the owner loses control of windows and sometimes the climate control. This issue could be due to a faulty electrical connection or a problem with the vehicle's computer system.
- Steering Wheel Vibration: Some owners have reported a steering wheel vibration issue, which may be caused by an imbalance in the front tires or a problem with the vehicle's suspension system. It is essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to diagnose and rectify the problem.
- Burns Oil, Particularly Synthetic: Some owners have reported that the 2002 Cadillac Seville burns oil, particularly synthetic. This issue could be due to worn-out piston rings or valve guides, which can allow oil to leak into the combustion chamber. It is essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to diagnose and rectify the problem.
- Front End Shimmy: Some owners have reported a front end "shimmy" issue, which took several weeks to diagnose. This issue could be due to a variety of factors, including worn-out suspension components or loose steering linkages. It is essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to diagnose and rectify the problem.
- Driver's Side Seat Warmer: Some owners have reported that the driver's side seat warmer does not work. This issue could be due to a blown fuse or a faulty seat warmer switch. It is essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to diagnose and rectify the problem.
- Random Electrical Problem in the Radio Circuit: Some owners have reported that the vehicle has a random electrical problem in the radio circuit, which sometimes pulls current when the engine is off overnight. This issue could be due to a faulty electrical connection or a problem with the vehicle's computer system. It is essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to diagnose and rectify the problem.
- Expensive Parts for Original Ones: Some owners have reported that the parts for the 2002 Cadillac Seville are expensive, particularly the original ones. This issue could be due to the vehicle's age and the fact that some parts may no longer be in production. It is essential to budget for the cost of parts when owning a 2002 Cadillac Seville.
- Sunroof Issues: Some owners have reported that the sunroof of the 2002 Cadillac Seville has tracking issues. This issue could be due to a variety of factors, including worn-out tracks or a problem with the sunroof motor. It is essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to diagnose and rectify the problem.
In summary, the 2002 Cadillac Seville has several common problems reported by its owners, including front end clunking noise, interior design, dashboard lights and radio issues, steering wheel vibration, burning oil, front end shimmy, driver's side seat warmer, random electrical problem in the radio circuit, expensive parts for original ones, and sunroof issues. It is essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to diagnose and rectify these problems.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-24
- VIN: 1G6KS54Y83U
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS THIS YEAR, MOST RECENTLY TODAY (3/22/14), THE ENGINE ON MY 2003 (?) CADILLAC SLS ABRUPTLY CUT OFF, SIMILAR TO THE MUCH-PUBLICIZED RECENT FAILURES ON GM'S 2003-11 COMPACT CARS. MY CAR IS NO COMPACT, BUT I'M WONDERING IF IT USES THE SAME IGNITION COMPONENTS. IN ANY EVENT, WE WERE LUCKY TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT, I REFERRED THE CAR TO MY TRUSTED MECHANIC, AND HE COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. ONE FURTHER NOTE: WHEN THE ENGINE CUT OFF TODAY, ONLY *ONE* KEY WAS IN THE IGNITION, SO IT WAS *NOT* A MATTER OF THE SWITCH BEING "WEIGHED DOWN" BY AN OVERLOADED KEY CHAIN. I WILL TAKE THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC ON MONDAY AND SUGGEST THAT A NEW IGNITION SWITCH BE INSTALLED. BUT ALL THIS SHOULD SERVE AS A "HEADS UP" WARNING TO GM OWNERS WHO DRIVE NON-COMPACT GM CARS. *TR

ABOUT A WEEK LATER I WAS DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY 610 AND I TEMPORARILY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN TRYING TO SWITCH LANES, AND ALMOST SIDE SWIPED A TRUCK. THE LOSS OF CONTROL WAS ONLY DURING THE TURN OF THE STEERING WHEEL, I GAINED CONTROL WHEN I STRAIGHTENED THE STEERING WHEEL AND CONTINUED ON HOME. I bought this Caddy in March of 2005, it is my sixth Caddy. Two have been bummers but not this one. I have had no trouble with this car. I love to drive it and it handles very well. It has the Northstar engine and I get excellent mileage. On a trip, I get around 26 miles per gallon and around 20 miles per gallon around town. I also own a 1991 Seville that I love to drive. I have nothing but good things to say about this car.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Seville! It's a great car.
-
I had a 1997 STS before this one and it was impressive. However, this 2002 STS outdoes it with even greater features and improved gas mileage (I'm averaging 32-33 on the highway)!! The car handles great and has a sporty feel, more like a Corvette (I previously owned a 2000 Vette, and the Caddy seems to ride very similarly, except for the weight of the car). All in all, this is a fantastic car for the price! Enjoy!
-
When it comes to handling and both the outside and inside appearance, this vehicle is top-notch. However, it's worth noting that the rear leg room is quite tight. On the bright side, the performance is truly outstanding!
-
Congratulations on your new Cadillac! It sounds like you made an excellent choice. The Seville STS is a stunning luxury sedan, and the 4.6 litre Northstar V-8 is a legendary performer. The Delco-Bose stereo system is also a great feature, and it's wonderful to hear that it sounds even better than your home system. The Seville is packed with so many nice amenities that it's hard to list them all. It's great to hear that you considered a Lexus LS430, but ultimately found that the Seville offered better styling, performance, and value. Enjoy your new ride!

Sorry to hear about the trouble you've had with your 2002 Seville. It sounds like it's been in the shop quite a bit for some major fixes. I can understand why you might be worried about future system failures now that it's no longer under warranty. It's fortunate that the warranty covered the previous repairs, which would have been quite expensive otherwise.
