1996 Lexus Ls400 problems
The Lexus LS (Japanese: レクサス・LS, Hepburn: Rekusasu LS) is a full-size luxury sedan (F-segment in Europe) serving as the flagship model of Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota. For the first four generations, all LS models featured V8 engines and were predominantly rear-wheel-drive. In the fourth generation, Lexus offered all-wheel-drive, hybrid, and long-wheelbase variants. The fifth generation changed to using a V6 engine with no V8 option, and only one length was offered.
As the first model developed by Lexus, the LS 400 debuted in January 1989 with the second generation debuting in November 1994. The LS 430 debuted in January 2000 and the LS 460/LS 460 L series in 2006. A domestic-market version of the LS 400 and LS 430, badged as Toyota Celsior (Japanese: トヨタ・セルシオ, Hepburn: Toyota Serushio), was sold in Japan until the Lexus marque was introduced there in 2006. In 2006 (for the 2007 model year), the fourth generation LS 460 debuted the first production eight-speed automatic transmission and an automatic parking system. In 2007, V8 hybrid powertrains were introduced on the LS 600h/LS 600h L sedans.
Development of the LS began in 1983 as the F1 project, the code name for a secret flagship sedan. At the time, Toyota's two existing flagship models were the Crown and Century models – both of which catered exclusively for the Japanese market and had little global appeal that could compete with international luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar. The resulting sedan followed an extended five-year design process at a cost of over US$1 billion, and premiered with a new V8 engine and numerous luxury features. The Lexus LS was intended from its inception for export markets, and the Lexus division was formed to market and service the vehicle internationally. The original LS 400 debuted to strong sales, and was largely responsible for the successful launch of the Lexus marque.
Since the start of production, each generation of the Lexus LS has been manufactured in the Japanese city of Tahara, Aichi. The name "LS" stands for "Luxury Sedan", although some Lexus importers have preferred to define it as "Luxury Saloon". The name "Celsior" is taken from Latin word "celsus", meaning "lofty" or "elevated".

Common 1996 Lexus Ls400 problems
The 1996 Lexus LS400 is known for several common problems, primarily related to the engine and transmission.
One of the most frequent issues is with the engine, specifically the starter motor. The starter motor is located in a very inconvenient place, underneath the intake manifold, making it difficult to access and replace. It tends to fail between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, often requiring the removal of the intake manifold, which may cause the heater control valve to crack and need replacement as well.
Another problem with the engine is the timing belt. While the 1UZ 4.0L V8 engine uses a timing belt for quieter operation, it requires replacement every 90,000 miles or 7 years. The timing belt sets the timing for the entire engine, and its failure can lead to significant engine damage. The water pump, timing belt idler bearings, and two timing belt idler bearings should also be replaced during this maintenance.
The transmission in the 1996 Lexus LS400 can also present problems. Transmission failure can manifest as a shudder or delay when shifting into another gear, grinding during acceleration, the car shaking, or a burning smell. Replacing the transmission with a rebuilt one can help address these issues, but it is essential to ensure it is inspected before installation.
The transmission mounts are another problem area, often requiring replacement after the transmission is taken out for repair or replacement.
The power steering pump is also prone to issues, with seals and hoses developing leaks over time. Any leakage is likely to affect the alternator, located directly beneath the power steering pump. Replacing the power steering pump is a complex task and may require professional assistance.
Fluid-filled engine mounts, which reduce vibrations in the car, can collapse and fail over time, leading to increased vibration. These are surprisingly expensive to replace on the LS400 compared to simple rubber mounts used on other vehicles.
When buying a 1996 Lexus LS400, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and ask the seller for records of when the timing belt was last changed. Checking for signs of engine mount failure, starter motor issues, and power steering pump leaks is also essential. While these issues should not deter buyers, they are worth considering before making a purchase.
What are the most common problems with the LS400?
These are the common problems for the old LS400's: Starter, ps pump, alternator, ECU's caps, tranny, tranny's mount, flexdiscs (1 at the tranny & the other at the rear axle), strut bars & flex EGR pipe so ask the current owner if they've been changed along w/ the timing belt/water pump but for $800, you can't expect ...
What is the life expectancy of a Lexus LS 400?
A: You should be able to reach 200,000 miles in that car if you really take care of it. The LS 400 is a very reliable luxury sedan, but you should consider changing the timing belt because of its age.
How reliable is the LS400?
This is the most reliable car on the planet. There's multiple examples of these cars going 250, 300,000 miles with no issues. All you need is brakes, tires, gas, and oil changes, and that's it. And these things will run forever.
What is the mileage on a 1996 Lexus LS400?
EPA mileage rating is 19 city, 26 highway. A round of mostly city driving and some highway driving netted 17.6 mpg on the premium fuel the LS400 requires.

GO ON THE HIGHWAY, DRIVE 50 MILES, EXIT, THE CAR IDLE SPEED DROPS TO WHERE THE CAR STALLS OUT. PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL, TURN THE KEY, IT STARTS RIGHT BACK UP, NO MORE PROBLEM. OR, DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY, DRIVE 50 MILES, ENCOUNTER STOP-AND-GO TRAFFIC, THE IDLE SPEED DROPS TO WHERE THE CAR STALLS OUT. PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL, TURN THE KEY, IT STARTS RIGHT BACK UP, NO MORE PROBLEM. I GOT TAPPED BY THE CAR BEHIND ME WHEN AT 1 MPH I WAS COMING TO A RED LIGHT EXITING THE FREEWAY AND THE CAR DIED, THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND IT TOOK ME A FRANTIC MOMENT TO TRY PUTTING THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND RESTARTING IT WHILE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THIS IS A CLEAR SAFETY ISSUE THAT LEXUS CLEARLY KNOWS ABOUT (SEE EG002-97) BUT WHICH THE NHTSA HAS DONE NOTHING ABOUT VIS-A-VIS A RECALL, EVEN THOUGH LEXUS THEMSELVES FIXED THE PROBLEM IN LATER-PRODUCTION '96 LS400S. THE PROBLEM IS IN THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE, RESULTING IN A FIX AND A NEW PART # FOR THE ECM, GOING FROM 89661-50302 TO 89661-50303. DOING A GOOGLE SEARCH ONE CAN FIND MANY FORUMS WHERE PEOPLE DESCRIBE HAVING THE PROBLEM AND FIXING IT WITH THE CHANGED ECM. I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR USED AND HAD NO IDEA THIS PROBLEM EXISTED. - Summary: THE NHTSA WEBSITE FOR REPORTING/DISPLAYING VEHICLE SAFETY PROBLEMS FOR MY 96 LEXUS LS400 (SAFERCAR.GOV) SHOWS THERE WERE ONLY 12 SERVICE BULLETINS, YET IN FACT THERE WERE MANY MANY MORE NOT SHOWN ON THE NHTSA SITE. GOING TO THE SITE WWW.ALLDATADIY.COM/TSB/31/96310210.HTML ONE CAN SEE A COMPLETE LIST OF SERVICE BULLETINS, 108 BY MY COUNT. A SIMILAR DISPARITY IN LISTS APPLIES TO THE NHTSA WEBSITE FOR THE 95 LS400, WHICH ON WWW.ALLDATADIY.COM/TSB/31/95310210.HTML SHOWS 128 SERVICE BULLETINS APPLY, BUT A NHTSA WEBSITE SAFERCAR.GOV SEARCH ONLY SHOWS 12, SAME NUMBER IT SHOWS FOR 96. NOW OBVIOUSLY THE TWO YEARS AREN'T IN REALITY GOING TO HAVE THE EXACT SAME NUMBER OF SERVICE BULLETINS, YET THAT IS WHAT THE NHTSA SITE SHOWS, 12 EACH YEAR, BOTH WAY SHORT OF THE REAL NUMBERS OF 128 AND 108 BULLETINS, RESPECTIVELY, FOR THE 95 AND 96 MODEL YEARS. THIS ISSUE OF INCOMPLETE DATA AT THE NHTSA MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO REFERENCE A PARTICULAR SERVICE BULLETIN WHEN REPORTING A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH A PARTICULAR CAR BECAUSE IT SEEMS THE NHTSA HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THE RELEVANT BULLETINS AND SO CANNOT VERIFY THAT THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS ABOUT AND HAS A FIX FOR A PARTICULAR PROBLEM BUT HAS NONETHELESS FAILED TO ELEVATE IT TO THE LEVEL OF A RECALL, LEAVING THE POOR OWNERS TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES IF THEY BRING IN A CAR WITH A PROBLEM AND THE DEALER FAILS TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AS ONE DESCRIBED IN ONE OF THEIR OWN SERVICE BULLETINS. NHTSA NEEDS TO GET ITS DATA-UPDATING PROCESS FIXED SO ALL THE SERVICE BULLETINS FOR A VEHICLE APPEAR ON THEIR OWN SAFERCAR.,GOV SITE, FOR USE BY PEOPLE CREATING COMPLAINTS AS WELL AS BY THE NHTSA INVESTIGATORS THEMSELVES, SO PEOPLE CAN REQUEST THAT NHTSA ELEVATE SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEMS (LIKE THE ONE IN LEXUS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN EG002-97, WHERE CARS STALL WHEN IDLING ON THE FREEWAY) TO THE LEVEL OF A RECALL AND NOT JUST A BULLETIN GIVEN TO DEALERS.

THE DEALER PERSONNEL IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REMOTE LOCATION ON THEIR LOT DUE TO THE GREAT POSSIBILITY OF AN EXPLOSION. I CONTACTED LEXUS TO NOTIFY OF THE SITUATION, RECEIVED AN INCIDENT NUMBER. CAR WAS REPAIRED, WHEN COMPLETE I NOTIFIED LEXUS, THEY SEEMED NOT TO CARE MUCH, OFFERED TO MAKE ME AN APPOINTMENT AT A LEXUS DEALERSHIP TO VERIFY THE TOYOTA DEALER HAD INSTALLED THE NEW PARTS CORRECTLY FOR A CHARGE. THAT IS AFTER PAYING OVER $2,300.00 FOR A NEW FUEL TANK. THEY CLOSED THE INCIDENT REPORT MUCH TO MY DISMAY. THE MONEY IS NOT THE ISSUE BUT MY CONCERN THAT THIS MIGHT BE AN AGE ISSUE THAT COULD AFFECT OTHERS. I HAD PUT OUT A CIGARETTE JUST BEFORE A FULL TANK OF FUEL EMPTIED INTO THE VEHICLE. OH AND YES I HAD FILLED THE TANK JUST BEFORE THE INCIDENT. I DO POSSESS THIS ORIGINAL DEFECTIVE TANK. TEJAS TOYOTA CAN VERIFY ALL OF THIS INFORMATION AND THE TANK IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION AT MY HOME. *TR

I've never been one to stick to a particular car brand, but after my recent purchase, I think that's about to change. I just bought a 1996 LX 400 with only 37,000 miles on it, and I've been driving it around all weekend. I have to say, this car is truly incomparable to any other vehicle I've owned, and I've owned quite a few (including a Mercedes 190E, BMW535i, Maxima, and Volvo 740 Turbo). It beats them all! The ride and build quality are simply superb, and I was amazed at how smooth and effortless it felt when I had it up to 90 mph on the highway. This car is the perfect road trip companion, and I'm confident that it will provide me with years of reliable service. Needless to say, I'm thrilled with my purchase!

It sounds like you're really enjoying your first Lexus! With 39 cars under your belt, that's quite the compliment. Thank you for sharing your positive experience.
Tillman Jones 2024-09-21
The cup holders are a bit small for my giant big gulp, but that's my only complaint about this 14-year-old car with 173k miles. It drives like new, which is a testament to Toyota/Lexus' quality.
Korey Bergstrom 2024-09-03
This car is an absolute joy to own! The ride comfort and handling are superb, making road trips a breeze. We love how reliable it is, and even though maintenance costs are slightly higher than a normal car, it hasn't been much of an issue. The car gets an impressive 22-27 miles per gallon. I remember a scary incident from 2 years ago when a car suddenly entered my lane while I was going 60 mph. Thanks to the car's superb emergency maneuverability, I was able to quickly steer out of the way and avoid a collision. Overall, we highly recommend this car!
Ronny Metz 2024-08-16
Hey there! In 2004, I bought a stunning black 1996 LS 400 with factory chrome wheels. Even though it was 8 years old, it had only 78,000 miles on it and it was a LEXUS! I have to say, I have never owned a car that rides better. The ride is so quiet and smooth, and the build quality is top-notch. The interior features and creature comforts are true luxury. However, it's important to keep in mind that this car can be expensive to maintain. I just called to set up an appointment for the routine 90,000 mile service and the price tag is $1,500! That's a lot, but I guess most people who own these cars from brand new would have no problem affording it.
