1995 Chevrolet Chevy van problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.

Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.

After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common 1995 Chevrolet Chevy van problems

The 1995 Chevrolet Chevy Van, like any vehicle, has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the issues to look out for:

  • Fuel System Problems: Fuel system problems, such as pump failures, are not as common in the 1995 Chevy Van as they were in the earlier models with carburetors. However, they can still occur, and it's essential to check for any issues related to the fuel system when considering purchasing a 1995 Chevy Van.
  • EGR Valve Issues: The EGR valve can cause hesitation and knocking under low RPM acceleration, leading to a massive dead spot in the throttle. This issue can be due to a bad or disconnected EGR valve, a bad throttle position sensor (TPS), or a timing issue. Swapping the two injectors can help determine if the main fuel injector is bad.
  • Bad Hinges, Rust Issues, Worn Transmission, and Front End Wear: These are common problems with the 1995 Chevy Van, particularly if the vehicle has been abused or not well-maintained. The engine is generally solid if not worn out, but expect poor gas mileage, around 13 miles per gallon.
  • Steering Shaft Noise: Some owners of the 1995 Chevy Van have reported hearing a knock or clunking noise coming from the steering shaft. This issue can be due to a failed steering wheel position sensor, which can be replaced for around $200 to $300 to fix the problem.
  • Windshield Wiper Motor Component Failure: The windshield wipers on the 1995 Chevy Van may stop working intermittently due to a defective wiper motor control board. If this issue occurs, check with a dealer to see if there is a recall on your vehicle. A faulty wiper motor control board can cause the wipers to stop working, fail to turn on, keep running after being turned off, or only work on one speed setting.
  • Coolant Leaks or Oil Leaks From Intake Manifold Gaskets: Coolant or oil leaks from intake manifold gaskets can occur in the 1995 Chevy Van. These leaks can cause the engine to run poorly or even stall. If you suspect a leak, check the intake manifold gaskets for any signs of leakage and replace them if necessary.
  • Broken Door Handles: The door handles on the 1995 Chevy Van often break, particularly after around 140,000 miles. This issue affects both the indoor and outdoor door handles and can make it difficult to open or unlock the doors. Typically, it’s not possible to fix these broken handles, and the only solution is to replace them.
  • Idling Problems: 90s Silverados and Sierras, including the 1995 Chevy Van, may suffer from idling problems including a higher-than-normal engine idle. This causes the truck to waste fuel, and some drivers have also said that their engine shuts off when their vehicle is idling. The cause of this issue is most likely that the throttle body gasket has developed a vacuum leak. To fix this problem, you’ll need to replace any failed gaskets.
  • Abnormal Noise From the Front or Rear Differential: If you drive a 1995 Chevy Van, you may start to hear an abnormal noise in the front or rear differential at around 165,000 miles. This problem is often caused by worn bearings but could also be the result of another fault. You may be able to fix this problem by replacing the axle bearings if you catch it early, but you often have to do a full rebuild of the affected differential.
  • Alternator Failure: The alternator may eventually fail in the 1995 Chevy Van, causing the battery to die and possibly an abnormal noise to occur. This problem occurs on average at around 125,000 miles and requires replacing the alternator, which typically costs around $300 to $400.
  • Internal Distributor Faults: Some drivers have reported internal faults in the distributor, which can cause the engine to run roughly or stall. You’ll need to overhaul or replace the internal distributor to correct this problem.

It's important to note that these are common problems reported by owners of the 1995 Chevy Van, and not all vehicles will experience these issues. However, being aware of these potential problems can help you make an informed decision when considering purchasing a 1995 Chevy Van.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-01-09
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1GBEG25K8SF
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: SEAT BELT ON REAR PASSENGER-SIDE SEAT CAME UNLOCKED DURING TRAVEL (THIRD OCCURENCE IDENTIFIED). THIS SEAT IS USED BY MY 3-YEAR-OLD SON WITH A CAR SEAT. TODAY THE CAR SEAT AND MY SON WERE THROWN FORWARD OUT OF THE SEAT WHEN I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AT AN INTERSECTION THAT IS ON A DECLINE GRADE. MY SON DID NOT APPEAR TO BE INJURED AS HE WAS STILL SECURED IN THE CAR SEAT, HE WAS, HOWEVER, VERY SHAKEN UP AND SAID THAT HE BUMPED HIS HEAD. TWO PREVIOUS OCCURENCES OF SEAT BELT COMING UNDONE DURING TRAVEL HAVE BEEN NOTED BUT WITHOUT INCIDENT. SPECIAL CARE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THE SEAT BELT IS SECURELY LOCKED WHENEVER THE CAR SEAT IS TAKEN OUT AND PUT BACK IN OR ADJUSTED IN ANY WAY. AS THIS IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED TO BE THE SAFEST PLACE FOR A TODDLER'S CAR SEAT IN A VEHICLE SUCH AS THIS, I AM HESITANT TO MOVE THE CAR SEAT TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE VAN (BEHIND DRIVER'S SEAT). ALSO, I DO NOT KNOW IF THE IS A PROBLEM THAT COULD ALSO OCCUR WITH THE OTHER SEAT BELT AS WELL, AS WE DO NOT NORMALLY USE IT. BUT, AS MY SON HAS A SEIZURE DISORDER DUE TO A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY, HIS HEAD MUST BE PROTECTED FROM IMPACTS. UNTIL I CAN DETERMINE THAT THE SEAT BELT IN QUESTION CAN BE USED SAFELY I WILL HAVE TO PUT MY SON AND HIS CAR SEAT IN THE OTHER SEAT. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM? HAS IT BEEN NOTED BEFORE? COULD IT BE RELATED TO THE CONVERSION PACKAGE ON THE VEHICLE (THROUGH TRAVELTIME VANS)? WHERE DO WE START TO GET THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION CORRECTED? *AK

Negative 1995 Chevrolet Chevy van car reviews

  1. Jordyn Zemlak 2024-11-12

I bought this van in April 2004 with 94,500 miles and it has been a reliable companion ever since. As of July 2006, it has 125,000 miles on it. It's a G20 Shorty (180in long) with a 4.3L engine. Compared to a Ford van, the front end is excellent. The gas mileage ranges from 17 (city) to 20 (highway) at 65mph. Although the A/C has been a constant problem, the engine has been very reliable. Unfortunately, the A/C compressor has been replaced twice in the last two years and is broken again now. Lastly, the factory jack is a bit clumsy to use.

  2. Robin Homenick 2024-11-04

Hi there! I noticed that your car has had some issues with the u joints and right rear axle rusting out. It sounds like you've had to replace quite a few parts already. Would you like some help finding a solution to these problems?

  3. Joesph Tillman 2024-09-03

Hi there! We have a great van available with moderate mileage.

  4. Gerard Witting 2024-05-07

I hope you had a great trip! It sounds like the vehicle was pretty dependable and fuel efficient (20+mpg/hwy) considering the size. Although, it may have been under powered when climbing up hills. Overall, it seems like an excellent economical work horse when it's fully loaded.

  5. Domenick Vandervort 2024-02-03

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my G20 full conversion van. It's been a great addition to my family, especially when we're towing our race trailer around. The amount of room it provides is amazing and it's been a better option for us than any SUV. Although, I did have a bit of trouble recently when the ignition lock busted at 93000 miles, but overall it's been a great investment for us!

Positive 1995 Chevrolet Chevy van car reviews

  1. Isadore Ferry 2025-01-07

This vehicle is really dependable, roomy, and easy to drive for its size. The fuel economy is comparable to more modern vehicles that weigh much less with smaller engines. The 350 V8 gets around 15 mpg in the city and 19 to 20 mpg on the highway. The overall build quality was good for its day, but the styling is a little dated now. It's great for interstate trips because kids don't get cranky and older folks can just chill out.

  2. Dayne Moore 2024-11-20

Lots of room for people and cargo. The Beauville trim option adds a nice touch to the already great styling.

  3. Brice Smith 2024-11-09

I love hearing about your 1993 G20 with a 5.7 liter V8! It sounds like a powerful and reliable vehicle that can handle anything you throw at it. It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it, and I hope it continues to serve you well for many years to come. Thanks for sharing your story!

  4. Ryann Kulas 2024-09-07

This van is mechanically sound with a trusty 350 C.I.D. engine. The ride quality is unsurpassed with four captain chairs that recline, and a rear bench seat that turns into a daybed for the weary. Refreshments are within arms reach with the supplied ice chest in the rear on the extended models, and closets provide additional storage for extended trips. The handling is soft but predictable. Overall, it's a great van for family travel and out of town trips for anyone.

  5. Sydney Thompson 2024-07-05

I'm so glad I bought this 93 G30/5.7L van, even though it had a lot of miles on it. It starts and runs like a dream, getting me through every day with ease. I've had to do minimal maintenance on it, and it's been incredibly reliable.
