2012 Volkswagen Beetle problems

The Volkswagen Beetle, officially the Volkswagen Type 1, is a small car produced by the German company Volkswagen from 1938 to 2003. It is one of the most iconic cars in automotive history, recognised for its distinctive shape. Its production period of 65 years is the longest of any single generation of automobile, and its total production of over 21.5 million is the most of any car of a single platform.

The Beetle was conceived in the early 1930s. The leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, decided there was a need for a people's car to serve Germany's new road network, the Reichsautobahn. The German engineer Ferdinand Porsche and his design team began developing and designing the car in the early 1930s. But the fundamental design concept can be attributed to Béla Barényi in 1925, predating Porsche's claims by over five years. The result was the Volkswagen Type 1 and the introduction of the Volkswagen brand. Volkswagen initially slated production for the late 1930s, but the outbreak of war in 1939 meant that production was delayed until the war had ended. The car was originally called the Volkswagen Type 1 and marketed simply as the Volkswagen, but it was not until 1968 that it was officially named the "Beetle".

Volkswagen implemented designations for the Beetle in the 1960s, including 1200, 1300, 1500, 1600, 1302 and 1303. Volkswagen introduced a series of large luxury models throughout the 1960 and 70s—comprising the Type 3, Type 4 and the K70—to supplement the Beetle, but none of these models achieved the level of success that it did. Rapidly changing consumer preferences toward front-wheel drive compact hatchbacks in Europe prompted Volkswagen's gradual shift away from rear-wheel drive, starting with the Golf in 1974. In the late 1970s and 80s, Japanese automakers began to dominate the market, which contributed to the Beetle's declining popularity.

Over its lifespan, the Beetle's design remained consistent, yet Volkswagen implemented over 78,000 incremental updates. These modifications were often subtle, involving minor alterations to its exterior, interior, colours, and lighting. Some more noteworthy changes included the introduction of new engines, models and systems, such as improved technology or comfort.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-17
  • VIN: 3VWVA7AT9CM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Volkswagen water pumps keeps failing. I had the first water pump fail at 61902 miles replaced on 22 Mar 2017. I then had to have another Volkswagen water pump put in my car replaced by a Volkswagen dealership at 82,229 miles on 4 Jan 2019. I am now back at the Volkswagen dealer for yet another new water pump for my car at 108000. These Volkswagen water pumps should not be failing like they are and unfortunately I have found no 3rd party water pump to install in my make and model of car to try to avoid these numerous breakdowns. Not only are the numerous water pump failures expensive to replace, I am afraid the failure of these Volkswagen water pumps may lead to a catastrophic engine failure. Unfortunately, the failure of these Volkswagen water pumps are posted all over the internet.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.

2020-12-16
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2014 Volkswagen Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69BC.
2020-09-23
  • Manufacturer: Tenneco Automotive
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
  • Summary: Tenneco Automotive (Tenneco) is recalling certain Beck/Arnley Master Cylinders, part number 072-9831, sold as aftermarket or replacement parts for 2004-2018 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2012-2019 Volkswagen Beetle vehicles. The fluid seal crimp on the master cylinder may be insufficient, causing brake fluid to leak or the cylinder to come apart.
  • Consequence: If there is a brake fluid leak, it can reduce braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Beck/Arnley will notify the distributors that sold the master cylinders and will work with the distributors to notify the end users. Affected master cylinders will be exchanged for a new master cylinder (part number 072-9990), free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2020. Owners may contact Tenneco customer service at 1-800-625-9319.

  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2017 Volkswagen Passat, 2018 Tiguan LWB, 2007-2009 Jetta Sedan, 2011-2013, 2015 and 2019 Jetta, 2013 Jetta Hybrid, 2008-2009 Jetta Sportwagen, 2015 Golf Sportwagen, 2013 Golf, 2008-2010 and 2012-2013 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2008-2010 Beetle, and Beetle Convertible vehicles. Modifications made while the vehicles were in an internal evaluation period may cause the affected vehicles to not comply with all of the applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Consequence: If the vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, there could be an increased risk of a crash, fire, or injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners and repurchase the affected vehicles. The recall began November 6, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 01D7. Note: This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 18V-329.

  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:ANTI-THEFT:CONTROL MODULE
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."
  • Consequence: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall began November 19, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 37M2.

I purchased a vehicle in February, but unfortunately it has spent half of the time I have owned it at the dealership. After signing the papers, I noticed that the vehicle had two dents on the door that needed to be repaired. After getting it back, I had a problem with the defective window and had to bring it back three times for this issue. Although I was told that the vehicle was not on recall, I continuously experienced window problems. Additionally, I noticed that the paint was peeling around the bumpers. The dealership told me that the car paint was wrapped, but they still sent the vehicle to their body shop for painting. Unfortunately, the car has been back three times for correction. I have been in contact with VW Customer Care and the dealership to try and resolve these issues and receive some type of reimbursement for all of the headaches and possible diminished trade-in value.

My wife and I are disappointed with VW's recent actions. However, my love for the brand has not completely diminished. Despite some minor issues such as the windows and oil leaks, I have enjoyed driving my Beetle and taking care of it. I recently had to replace the valve cover gasket and another gasket during the 80k maintenance, which cost me an additional $750. Additionally, I had to replace the water pump for $1000. While I understand that tires are a necessary expense, I just spent $800 on new ones. Despite these setbacks, I am determined to keep a level head and not sell the car. My goal is to reach 300,000 miles with it.

My car has been plagued with misfires for the past two years, despite proper maintenance according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The issues started with an ignition coil, followed by another ignition coil, a fouled spark plug, and a purge valve. Unfortunately, the engine has now suffered a catastrophic failure at just over 100k miles, and the cost to replace it, along with possibly the turbo, is estimated to be between $5k-$7k. Despite this setback, I remain confident in my decision to avoid VW in the future due to their lack of reliability.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my new 2012 Turbo Beetle that I purchased three months ago. While I absolutely love driving the car, I have been experiencing some issues with the drivers and passenger windows. They go down without any problem, but when I try to close them, they stop and go. Unfortunately, the car has been in the dealership three times for the same repair, and I am not confident that VW will be able to correct the problem. Since the dealership has been working on the problem, I have noticed some wind noise and other issues with the windows that I did not have before. I am hoping that we can work together to find a solution to this problem, as I am considering returning the car due to this issue. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

It's really disappointing to hear about the issues you've been having with your VW. It sounds like you've had a lot of trouble with it, especially considering the amount of money you've had to spend on repairs. It's understandable that you wouldn't want to buy another VW after this experience. It's frustrating when a car that you initially loved turns out to be unreliable. I hope you're able to find a more dependable car in the future.

    Driving is so much fun!

  2. Kaleb Boyer 2024-10-21

After only one week of having the car, we have noticed that the windows are malfunctioning. They stop halfway up and then lower themselves, leaving about an inch of the glass visible. Despite several attempts, we have only been able to get them back up after a few tries. At one point, one of the windows was completely down and unresponsive to the switch. We are concerned about this issue and will be contacting our dealership in the morning. We hope to receive a satisfactory solution to this problem, as we have read about similar issues online without any clear solutions.

I love the styling update on the 'New Beetle'! It's a great tribute to the original Beetle, and the mechanical and technological updates make it a future classic. The interior is excellent, and while the seats aren't as supportive as those in the GTI, they're still comfortable on both long and short trips. The driving position is good, and the 2.0L Turbo combined with the DSG is a nice combination. There's ample storage space in the hatch, and the seats lay almost flat - several large storage tubs fit with ease! The only downside to the stock version is its weight, but the handling issues caused by the excess plumpness can be easily fixed with the addition of a heavier sway bar at the rear and/or some lowering springs. All in all, it's a fun car to drive and own!

The base beetle with five cylinder steel timing belts is a great car! It has received a 5 rating from the warranty companies, which means you won't have to spend a fortune fixing it.

Had a 74 Beetle and drove it for 10 years with no air conditioning. Recently purchased a used, 1 owner, 2012 Turbo, 4 Cylinder Beetle and I cannot believe how well this car handles the road. It has everything I’ve ever wanted in a Beetle. I am a very happy customer!
