1991 Buick Regal problems
The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Regal served as the Buick counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
Originally introduced as a personal luxury coupe, the Regal was later expanded to a full model line. To showcase its success in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick introduced the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. During the 1990s, while the four-door sedan superseded the two-door coupe entirely, forced-induction engines made their return, with superchargers replacing turbochargers.
For 1999, the Buick Regal inaugurated the sale of GM vehicles in the Chinese market, with the 1997 design lasting through 2008. Following the 2004 model year, Buick retired the nameplate in North America, with the Regal replaced by the Buick LaCrosse.
For 2008, Opel introduced the Opel Insignia as its largest sedan, with Buick rebranding the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market. For 2011, GM reintroduced the Regal to North America, rebranding the Insignia sedan for North America. For 2018, Buick introduced the second-generation Opel Insignia, sourcing all production from Germany; alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon in 22 years.
After 2020, as the division shifted away from car model lines, Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America.

Common 1991 Buick Regal problems
The Buick Regal, produced since the 1970s, has been known to have certain recurring issues that owners have reported. One of the most common problems is the ignition lock, which can prevent the key from being removed when the transmission is not in park. This issue is due to a faulty wire that relays information from the gear shifter or a failing automatic transmission. This problem has been reported in models from 1994 to 2016.
Another common problem, particularly in the 1994 to 2004 models, is the failure of the mass air flow sensor (MAF) and crankshaft position sensor (CPS). This can cause the vehicle to stutter and stall randomly at various speeds, including highway speeds, which can be dangerous. Replacing the faulty sensor should fix the issue.
Power window systems in the Buick Regal have also been known to malfunction, with the windows simply stopping to work in models made from 1990 to 2011. This issue is caused by a faulty switch and is less expensive to fix than replacing the power window motor or the window regulator.
The 2011 Buick Regal has been reported to have engine stalls or shut-offs while driving, which is the most-reported problem for this model year. The 2012 model year is rated as worse due to other possible factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage.
The 2012 Regal has also been reported to have brakes that failed to engage, with an average cost to fix of $10,000 and an average mileage of 4,000 miles.
The Buick Regal has been reported to have issues with the fuel pump, with the key getting stuck in the ignition, and with various sensors, including the water pump, fuel pump, and mass air flow sensor. These issues can result in expensive repairs if not addressed promptly.
In summary, the Buick Regal has several common problems that owners have reported, including issues with the ignition lock, mass air flow sensor and crankshaft position sensor, power window systems, and engine stalls or shut-offs while driving. These issues can result in expensive repairs if not addressed promptly. It is important for owners to be aware of these common problems and to address them promptly to avoid further damage to the vehicle.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-03-17
- VIN: 2G4WD54L2M1
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: ABRUPT, TOTAL LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL: AS THE VEHICLE ROLLED TO A STOP AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL, AND LOUD "BANG" WAS HEARD AND FELT COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE CAR. CAUTIOUSLY MOVING OFF FROM THE STOP, THERE WAS A COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL; THE STEERING WHEEL JUST SPUN FREELY, WHILE THE VEHICLE TRACKED ALMOST STRAIGHT AHEAD. SINCE THERE WAS STILL POWER AND BRAKING, THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO ROLL TO A STOP ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. (IF THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL HAD OCCURRED THREE MINUTES LATER, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AT 65 MPH ... WITH POSSIBLY FATAL CONSEQUENCES.) IN THIS VEHICLE THE ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, FRONT SUSPENSION, AND STEERING RACK ARE MOUNTED ON A SUBFRAME. THE SUBFRAME, IN TURN, IS ATTACHED TO THE PRIMARY STRUCTURAL FRAME OF THE VEHICLE WITH FOUR BOLTS M12X1.25 BOLTS; THE ATTACHMENTS INCLUDE RUBBER BUSHINGS TO PROVIDE SOME SHOCK ISOLATION BETWEEN THE SUBFRAME AND THE REST OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS A STEEL SLEEVE WHICH INSERTS INTO THE INNER BORE OF THE ISOLATION BUSHINGS, AND THROUGH WHICH THE MOUNTING BOLT IS INSERTED. (SEE ILLUSTRATION FROM GENERAL MOTORS "1991 BUICK REGAL SERVICE MANUAL," P. 10.3.3, FIGURE 1.) THERE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN NO CORROSION PROTECTION PROVIDED OR APPLIED TO THESE SUBFRAME ATTACH COMPONENTS DURING VEHICLE ASSEMBLY. UPON INSPECTION, THE CAUSE OF THE INCIDENT WAS DETERMINED TO BE FAILURE OF BOTH REAR SUBFRAME ATTACHMENT BOLTS AND/OR ISOLATION BUSHINGS DUE TO SEVERE CORROSION IN SERVICE. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE BOLT FAILURES, THE FRONT SUSPENSION SPRINGS FORCED THE REAR OF THE SUBFRAME DOWNWARD, RESULTING IN THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT DISCONNECTING ENTIRELY FROM THE STEERING RACK ASSEMBLY.

- Summary: WAS TRAVELING ON A CURVE WHEN IN SPLIT SECOND LOSS STEERING AND ENDED OFF ROADWAY UPSIDE DOWN ,IT WAS AFTER ABOUT A YEAR I STARTED GETTING RECALL NOTICES THAT SAID THIS SAME THING WOULD HAPPEN ,THESE RECALLS STARTED IN 2000,AND 2001 ,AND THAT'S WHEN I STARTED TO THINK THAT INFACT THE BOLTS FAILING CAUSED MY ACCIDENT OR CONTRIBUTED TO IT . I MADE CALLS TO BUICK AND WAS EVEN SENT A RECALL LIST POST DATED 12-20-2000, TODAY LOOKING ONLINE SEEMS ALOT OF TROUBLE WITH BOLTS WERE OCCURRING 96 + 97 BUT I WAS NEVER NOTICED UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE ,I CALLED BUICK LAST YEAR AND THEY NOW SAY THEY HAVE NO INFO ON MY PRIOR YEARS CALLS TO THEM ,AND TO DATE I HAVE NOT BEEN REIMBURSED FOR MY LOSSES ,NO OFFER TO REPAIR ,REFUND ECT . MY ONLY THOUGHT THAT THESE NEED TO BE BETTER NOTICED TO CONSUMERS FOR SAFETY REASONS, AS WITH TOYOTA RECALL I'M NOT SURE THE PUBLIC IS OR HAS BEEN MADE AWARE THAT THEY SHOULD REPORT ANY THING ABOUT A CAR TO THE NHTSA WEB SITE AND LET IT WORK OUT ITSELF THRU THE DATABASE, I DID NOT HAVE A COMPUTER BACK THEN TO ACCESS THE 10 FOLD INFO ON SUCH RECALLS TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC ,MY MAIN CONCERN TODAY IS WHAT IS BUICK GOING TO DO FOR MY LOSSES? - VIN: 2G4WD54L9M1
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: ON APPROXIMATELY JULY 5, 2006 I HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM THE LEFT FRONT OF MY 1991 BUICK REGAL [XXX]. AS I AM A CERTIFIED MECHANIC, I REMOVED THE WHEEL AND TIRE IN ORDER TO INSPECT THE FRONT END COMPONENTS FOR A PROBLEM. I FOUND THAT THE STEEL WHEEL HAD A LARGE CRACK THAT WRAPPED ABOUT TWO THIRDS OF THE AREA AROUND THE LUG HOLES. THIS CRACK APPEARED TO BE CAUSED BY METAL FATIGUE. I THEN REMOVED THE OTHER WHEELS ON THE VEHICLE AND FOUND SMALLER CRACKS AROUND TWO OF THE REMAINING THREE WHEELS. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO BOTH GENERAL MOTORS AND MY DEALERSHIP. THIS VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED BY MY WIFE AND HAS NEVER BEEN ABUSED OR WRECKED. SINCE THERE ARE MANY THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES WHICH ARE USING THESE WHEELS, I FEEL THAT THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY RISK WITH ALL VEHICLES USING THESE WHEELS. I HAVE PHOTOGRAPHED THESE CRACKS FOR RECORD KEEPING PURPOSES, AND I WILL BE HAPPY TO SEND THEM IN WITH THIS COMPLAINT. THIS COULD BE THE BEGINNING OF A REAL PROBLEM AND PEOPLE COULD BE SERIOUSLY INJURED. *NM UPDATED 07/12/2012 *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

This was one of the best cars I've ever owned! It had a really cool interior and dash and was very reliable. You wouldn't believe it, but I never had to touch anything for 100k miles, and even then, they were just minor things.
-
The 1991 Regal Limited Sedan with the 3.8l engine is exceptionally fast. Mine clocks at 7.1 to 60mph. Although there is a little body roll, it is very responsive. It has a luxury feel and can always haul ass.
-
My Regal Limited is now 18 years old and with only 97,000 miles on it still runs and drives like new. I believe that the 3.8 engine is one of the best that GM has ever produced. It's kind of odd that this car is the Limited but has manual crank windows, but I have learned to live with them. It's an excellent car that I would highly recommend to anyone. Plus, the gas mileage is fantastic!
-
This car is great for real life driving, especially when you have to drive fast on the highway. It's comfortable whether you're driving in stop and go traffic or at 85 mph. It's been reliable and solid, and I wouldn't mind driving it from Florida to Alaska and back. The interior has enough space for 4 tall people or 5 regular ones, and the trunk is cavernous. I highly recommend it!
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it with 162,000 miles and it ran great the whole time. I only had to do a tune-up. I eventually traded it to my father, who is extremely rough on cars, and it ran for another 15,000 miles despite his abuse. Unfortunately, he ran it out of transmission fluid and burnt up the transmission. But even then, it still drove! The transmission needed a rebuild at 178,000 miles due to the lack of transmission fluid. Thanks for listening to my story!

I'm glad to hear that you had a positive experience with your vehicle! Although there were some issues with the rear brake calipers (4 wheel disc) that required replacement twice over the next 60-70,000 miles, it's good to know that regular maintenance kept the vehicle running smoothly. It's also interesting to note that there was a class action lawsuit filed due to problems with the rear brakes. Additionally, the parking brake broke sometime after 90,000 miles, but overall it seems like you have had no issues with the vehicle. Thank you for sharing your experience!

When I first saw her, I was blown away! What a car! It made me feel like I had truly arrived, especially coming from a Geo driver who now wishes she still had her old car. I am writing this review because I am so upset about how much money it will cost me, according to the Buick dealership, to get my baby purring again and see if she still has something left in her. I need an entirely new braking system in the Temple Hills area of Maryland, which will cost approximately $1952.00. That's more than what I paid for the car! Then I thought, maybe if the previous owner had taken better care of her, she wouldn't be asking so much out of me.
