2006 Mitsubishi Montero problems

The Mitsubishi Pajero (三菱・パジェロ, Japanese: ; English: /pəˈhɛroʊ/; Spanish: ) is a full-size SUV (sport utility vehicle) manufactured and marketed globally by Mitsubishi over four generations — introduced in 1981 and discontinued in 2021.
The Pajero nameplate derives from Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat. Mitsubishi marketed the SUV as the Montero in North America, Spain, and Latin America (except for Brazil and Jamaica) due to the term "pajero" being derogatory (meaning "wanker") in Spanish. In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Shogun (将軍), named after the Japanese word for "General." The model was discontinued in North America in 2006.
The Pajero, Montero, and Shogun names were used on other, mechanically unrelated models, such as the Pajero Mini kei car, the Pajero Junior and Pajero iO/Pinin mini SUVs, and the Triton-based Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport mid-size SUVs. The Pajero is one of four models by Mitsubishi (the others being the Triton, Pajero Sport and the Pajero iO) that share Mitsubishi's heavy-duty, off-road-oriented Super-Select four-wheel-drive system as opposed to their light-duty Mitsubishi S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
The Pajero has generated more than 3.3 million sales in its 40-year run. The name lives with the smaller Pajero Sport, which is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pickup. Despite the similarity in name, the Pajero Sport shares none of the original Pajero's underpinnings and is smaller in overall size.

Common 2006 Mitsubishi Montero problems
The Mitsubishi Montero 2006 is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is with the four-wheel drive actuator, which is controlled electronically by vacuum and small switches. These switches are prone to failure, causing flashing four-wheel drive lights and shifting issues with the transfer case and front differential
Another common problem is with the O2 sensors, which can go bad and cause catalytic converter failure. This is a significant issue because it can result in the need for expensive repairs, such as replacing the catalytic converter itself
The Montero's valve stem seals are also known to be a problem, especially in the 2006 model. These seals can wear out and cause the engine to burn oil, requiring a significant repair job to replace them
In addition to these issues, the Montero has a history of transmission problems, particularly in the 2001 model year. These issues can manifest as the transmission switching into neutral and refusing to shift, surging between shifts, or shifting slowly or with delays. While the causes of these issues are not well documented, leaking transmission fluid is a common culprit.
The Montero's electrical components can also be problematic, with issues such as the horn honking unexpectedly or the alarm activating in the middle of the night. These issues can be caused by a worn-out metal ring inside the airbag housing or other electrical malfunctions.
Despite these common problems, many owners of the Mitsubishi Montero 2006 report that the vehicle is reliable and capable, with good performance both on and off-road. However, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and to maintain the vehicle properly to minimize the risk of problems.

How many miles can a Mitsubishi Montero last?
I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.

Hi there! We were initially considering the Pilot, Expedition Ltd, Sequoia and Lexus LX, but we were pleasantly surprised when we gave the Mitsubishi a try. The interior and exterior look great, and it drives wonderfully on both streets and highways. We haven't had the chance to take it off-roading yet, but we've heard great things about its performance from 4x4 magazines and international races. The acceleration, cornering, and braking are all top-notch, and while the gas mileage is average (14 city/19 highway), the price is very reasonable. If you're in the market for a mid to large luxury SUV, we highly recommend giving the Mitsubishi a test drive. Plus, with SUV sales plummeting due to gas prices, the price is very negotiable right now. Thanks for considering it!

I drove a Toyota Tacoma from the 1993 to the 2014 models. While I found that some trucks with 4-wheel drive experience front wheel binding or jumping during U-turns or sharp turns, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was not the case with my Tacoma. Even with 4-wheel drive selected, I experienced no binding or jumping, making it a pleasure to drive. The truck has a lot of power and can easily pull heavy loads. I would give this truck the maximum rating if I could - it is designed with high-quality materials and excellent craftsmanship.

Hi there! I just wanted to share that I absolutely love my 3rd Mitsubishi Montero! It's been through a lot with me, including two cross-country trips with all kinds of weather and road conditions, and it has never let me down. The only downside is that the gas mileage could be better. I especially appreciate the extra engine power in my 2005 model, which has helped me tackle some tough road grades in Nevada and Colorado. It's definitely not as fast as a Greyhound bus, but it's faster than an 18-wheeler! I was disappointed to hear that Mitsubishi stopped making Monteros in '06 or '07, as I think there was so much potential for improvement. Overall, I think it's a really great vehicle.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the Montero Limited. I've been a fan of this vehicle since they changed the body style in 2000, and I finally got my hands on the last Black Limited in my area. Let me tell you, it's been an amazing ride so far! The leather seats, moonroof, and heated seats are just a few of the many features that make this vehicle so comfortable and roomy. I've had no issues with the quality of the vehicle, and I've received many compliments on it. It's always a pleasure to introduce people to the Montero Limited, as it's not a vehicle that many people have had the chance to see. I was considering other options like the Touareg, H3, and Aspen, but I'm so glad I went with the Montero Limited. I'm truly happy with my purchase and would definitely buy another one!

The Mitsubishi Montero is a fun and capable off-road vehicle. However, it may not be the best choice for towing as it struggles with even small trailers. When towing a single axle with 2 small ATVs, we only get 6 miles to the gallon on the freeway. It's important to keep this in mind if you plan on using it for towing purposes.
