The fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E46, which was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1997 to 2006, and was the successor to the E36 3 Series which ceased production in 2000. First introduced in November 1997, the E46 was available in sedan, coupé, convertible, station wagon and hatchback body styles. The latter has been marketed as the 3 Series Compact.

The M3 performance model was introduced in June 2000 with a 2-door coupé body style, followed by the convertible counterpart in April 2001. The M3 is powered by the BMW S54 straight-six engine with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed SMG-II automated manual transmission.

The E46 line-up was phased out starting from late 2004, following the introduction of the E90 3 Series sedans. However, the E46 coupé and convertible body styles remained in production until August 2006.

Common 2006 Bmw 325xit problems

The BMW 325xi, produced in 2006, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues are primarily related to the car's electronics, engine, and transmission.

One of the most common problems is with the electronic steering lock, which has been reported to cause issues in the 2006 and some 2007 models. The yellow or red steering lock warning light might come on, and the steering lock can take some time to unlock. Eventually, the lock mechanism may fail completely, preventing the car from starting. BMW's recommended repair involves replacement of the steering column, which could be costly ($1,200-$1,500). Some owners reported that reprogramming solved the issue.

Another issue is faulty exhaust-side hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) in some 2006-2008 models, which can cause a ticking noise after the engine is warmed up. In some cases, the cylinder head also had to be replaced to completely resolve the problem. Some owners choose to live with the problem rather than spend money on repairs.

A failed electric water pump can cause overheating, and another symptom could be the radiator fan staying on at high speed for a long time. This repair should be done as soon as possible, as overheating can cause more engine problems down the road. Usually, a thermostat is recommended to be replaced along with the water pump. The repair could cost from $800 for a water pump only to $1200-$1800 with the thermostat.

Oil leaks are very common in the 325xi, with the most often reported sources being the valve cover gasket ($550-700) and the oil filter housing gasket ($370-$600). Transmission pan and the connector sleeve may leak too.

A failed ignition coil may cause the engine to misfire and run rough. Ignition coil replacement is not very expensive.

The under tray of the car is known to be broken, and the oil pan is leaking, causing the car to be covered in oil from top to bottom and leaking behind the car as well

. The engine mounts are worn, and the axles in the front are always breaking on front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive cars due to the turning radius.

While there are no specific complaints about the entertainment technology in the 2006 BMW 3 Series, it is worth noting that the technology is a cut above the industry standard, with an MP3 player and ten speakers included even in the entry-level 325i. Onboard safety tech is also better than expected for a 2006 model car, with ventilated anti-lock brakes, traction control, and crash sensors that automatically unlock doors and hit the hazard lights.
