The fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E46, which was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1997 to 2006, and was the successor to the E36 3 Series which ceased production in 2000. First introduced in November 1997, the E46 was available in sedan, coupé, convertible, station wagon and hatchback body styles. The latter has been marketed as the 3 Series Compact.

The M3 performance model was introduced in June 2000 with a 2-door coupé body style, followed by the convertible counterpart in April 2001. The M3 is powered by the BMW S54 straight-six engine with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed SMG-II automated manual transmission.

The E46 line-up was phased out starting from late 2004, following the introduction of the E90 3 Series sedans. However, the E46 coupé and convertible body styles remained in production until August 2006.

  • Oil and Coolant Leaks: Several owners have reported oil and coolant leaks in their 2004 BMW 325xi. These leaks can be caused by various factors, including worn-out gaskets or seals. It is crucial to inspect the car for any signs of leaks and address them promptly to avoid more severe engine damage.
  • Subframe Issues: The E46, including the 325xi, is known for its subframe issues, which can lead to a cracked subframe if not checked and addressed early. If the subframe is cracked, it can be welded back together, but it is essential to catch it early. Additionally, reinforcing the rear strut towers with a brace and the fronts, if desired, can help prevent further damage.

  • Taillight Recall: Some owners have reported issues with the taillights in their 325xi. It is essential to check if the car has been taken in for the taillight recall and have it addressed if not. If the recall has not been completed, the taillights may need to be re-wired.
  • Exhaust and Cooling System: Blue smoke from the exhaust can indicate a failing PCV, while shaking in the water pump could indicate a problem with the cooling system. Regular inspections and maintenance of these components are crucial to ensure the car's longevity and performance.
  • Suspension Work: As an 18-year-old vehicle, the 2004 BMW 325xi may require some suspension work. It is essential to check for oil leaks from valve cover, oil pan gasket, and other components, as these may need to be replaced.

In summary, the 2004 BMW 325xi has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, including timing chain and tensioner issues, oil and coolant leaks, subframe problems, window regulator failures, taillight recalls, exhaust and cooling system concerns, and suspension work. Regular inspections, maintenance, and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the car's longevity and performance.
