1999 Ford F-250 problems
The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.
Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.
Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.
The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1999 Ford F-250 problems
The 1999 Ford F-250 has several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most prevalent issues is engine troubles, which affect all models to some extent. However, the 2006 model stands out as the worst iteration of the Ford F-250 for engine problems. Specific engine troubles include EGR failure, stalling engine while driving, and sudden loss of power, with the 2006 model receiving the most customer complaints for these issues.
Another common problem is suspension issues, which can lead to an inability to control the car for a driver. This trouble was most apparent with the 2006 and 2011 models. Some of the suspension issues included death wobble, hyper shaking, and shaking and loss of control. These difficulties can be dangerous and expensive for the driver to fix.
Steering difficulties appeared in several versions of the Ford F-250, with the 2017 model being the most prominent year for this issue. Some of the steering issues that surface for drivers of this vehicle include wobbles when steering and locking up the steering wheel. These control issues also correlate with the suspension difficulties mentioned earlier.
The death wobble is another significant issue with the F-250 truck, which refers to a body integrity issue where the F-250 truck shakes violently and becomes harder to control. This issue is loosely related to the aforementioned steering issue above. Some owners claimed to have experienced the death wobble, especially in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 years.
The Ford F-250 Super Duty also has exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) valves that can leak coolant. When white smoke comes from the tailpipe, it’s an indicator the valves are leaking and need a checkup. A faulty or defective thermostat bypass is also another coolant leak source. This can make the cooling system pressure spike, causing the radiator to fail. If this happens, the thermostat assembly and radiator need replacing.
The Super Duty diesel engines are prone to liner pitting if the cooling system is poorly maintained. During cavitation, air bubbles or ice forms on the engine’s water pump causing corrosion. To prevent liner pitting, motoring experts advise regularly adding antifreeze like Nalcool or Caterpillar ELC over the existing coolant as a preventative measure.
A common problem with the 1999 Ford F-250 is the spark plugs ejecting from the cylinder head. When this happens, Ford truck experts recommend replacing the cylinder head. A cylinder head costs approximately $400 online. If you hear a ticking sound when your Super Duty is at idle, it’s a likely indication a spark plug is about to eject. A basic mechanical precaution is to check if the plug is tight enough.
In summary, the 1999 Ford F-250 has several common problems, including engine troubles, suspension issues, steering difficulties, and spark plugs ejecting from the cylinder head. These issues can be costly and inconvenient for a driver, and it is essential to address them promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of the vehicle.

- Summary: The Belt in the tire separated while driving. This caused a "Bubble" to form causing my truck to shake violently and required changing to the spare tire. If this happened on the highway I could have lost control and caused an accident. I took my truck to a tire installer who documented the above finding and noted the tire was properly inflated and there were no impact marks on the tread or sidewalls. I am currently working with the supplier but they are being unreasonable with the requirements to have it inspected. No other reps have been contacted at this time. STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-27
- VIN: 1FTNW21F2XE
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: My fiancé & I were driving down a 35mph road & I told her my steering wheel was a little crooked & I don't remember hitting anything to knock out of alignment. We got to my friends house to move a car trailer for him up his steep driveway. I hooked up to the trailer pulled it out, moved it around to line up to back up driveway & making the last adjustment all of a sudden I was turning my steering wheel but the tires were not turning, jumped out to find the output shaft of the steering box was cracked in half diagonally & the steering arm was laying on the street. When I got under the truck & looked at the part that broke you could see it was fractured for a long time. There was only about an 1/8" on one side that was raw metal from just finally breaking. Thank God we are alive if it would have happened going fast probably would have killed someone.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-30
- VIN: 1FTNF21L8XE
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I was driving on the interstate going highway speed of 65 mph and the accelerator was stuck open and I could not slow down. The engine stayed at a high rpm. I had to press with a lot of force to slow down and come to a stop with the engine still at high rpm and had trouble stopping. Luckily, where I live there's not much traffic, and I made it to a shop with this issue. Upon investigating, the accelerator cable became frayed where it enters the sheath and gets stuck there. The Ford dealer didn't have a replacement in stock or any nationwide. So I went to a junk yard to find one and found the same vehicle that had the same frayed accelerator cable. I located a newer, second vehicle with less mileage with same cable that matched without any fraying. In the meantime, I ordered a new accelerator cable through Ford, but it was backordered several months and tied up in shipping. With this happening on these two same vehicles, I thought I should report it. Thank you.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-14
- VIN: 1FTRX27L9XK
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: SPARK PLUG NUMBERS 2 AND 7 BLEW OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. NUMBER 2 BLEW OUT WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND NUMBER 7 BLEW OUT STARTING OFF AT A GREEN LIGHT ON A MAIN STREET. THERE WAS A STRONG ODOR OF GAS WHEN THIS OCCURRED AND SERIOUS VIBRATION FROM THE ENGINE MISFIRING. THIS CREATED A POTENTIAL EXPLOSION HAZARD SINCE THE AIR/FUEL MIXTURE IS DESIGNED TO IGNITE FROM AN IGNITION SOURCE. THIS JEOPARDIZED MY SAFETY AS WELL AS THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND MY VEHICLE. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM TO FORD AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED FOR ALL VEHICLES MANUFACTURED THAT ARE AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM. MILEAGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS AS OWNERS OF THESE SPECIFIC VEHICLES WITH ALUMINUM HEADS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE AT LESS THAN 100,000 MILES.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-14
- VIN: 1FTRX27L9XK
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: THIS ENGINE WITH ALUMINUM HEADS BLEW OUT SPARK PLUG NUMBERS 2 AND 7. FIRST OCCURRENCE ON AUG 11 2015 AND THE NEXT JAN 14, 2016. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY AND THE NEXT OCCURRED STARTING FROM A STOP LIGHT. THERE WAS A LAG IN POWER AND THEN A LOUD BANGING NOISE AND A STRONG ODOR OF GAS. THIS CREATED AN EXPLOSION HAZARD AS WELL AS PUT MY SAFETY IN JEOPARDY AS WELL AS THAT OF THOSE AROUND ME. SINCE THE AIR/FUEL MIXTURE IS BEING BLOWN OUT OF THE ENGINE ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE AND THE COIL FIRING NORMALLY THIS CREATED A DEADLY SITUATION. THIS PROBLEM IS KNOWN TO FORD AND THE COMPANY IS REFUSING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT FOR ALL VEHICLES WITH THESE PARTICULAR ENGINES THAT ARE HAVING THESE PROBLEMS. THIS SHOULDN'T EVEN HAPPEN WITH AN ENGINE. IT'S A MANUFACTURE/DESIGN FAULT. IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND FIXED. THE MILEAGE IS NOT THE ISSUE AS THESE OCCURRENCES ARE HAPPENING ON THE NEWER TRUCKS/SUVS AS WELL WITH WAY FEWER MILES. THAT SHOWS IT'S A MANUFACTURE/DESIGN FLAW AND A VERY SERIOUS ONE.

You've put over 60k miles on this amazing truck, including hauling a 36' fifth wheel trailer all the way from California to Tennessee! It's so impressive that you make yearly trips down into Baja Mexico. Although it let you down once due to a rare failure of the camshaft sensor, we understand that modern computer reliance can be a risk. It's great to hear that you love this truck and have no intention of ever giving it up. Just adding a posi unit to it will make it even better!

It's great to hear that after twenty five years, it's still running strong!

Bought at 62k, now at 97k. This has been the strongest pickup I have ever owned. It's a trailer pulling dream, and even with only the 4.6 engine, it still pulls like a mule. I can always depend on it, it's been 100% reliable. Although I'm moving into a Super Duty, I'm definitely going to miss this truck.

I've owned this truck for 26 years and every time I drive it, I fall in love even more. From the fin windows (why did those ever go away?) to the throaty roar of the 7.3 diesel, there's nothing I don't love. It's comfortable to drive, powerful enough to pull a 4 horse head to head trailer, and has an extended cab with an 8' bed. People are always asking me if I want to sell it, but the answer is always no!

The diesel capacitor issue was easily resolved by upgrading to Ford's 3rd generation capacitor, which is now highly reliable. Additionally, I improved the truck's height by adding a leaf all around instead of using a lift kit, and I am extremely satisfied with the results. This truck is highly dependable and capable of handling any terrain. I immediately upgraded to 265 tires. While the plastic trim on the XLT's interior is fragile, the rear seat is adequate, as we've had teenagers sit in the back for long trips twice. For optimal performance, I highly recommend choosing the manual transmission when selecting a diesel, as it provides the added benefit of using engine compression off-road and in poor road conditions.

It's a Ford, it can go just about anywhere.

No major problems (yet). Mine has the small V8 with a tow package, so it can be slow going up hills with a trailer. At 100k miles, the transmission is starting to have rough shifts when cold. However, I haven't done much towing or city driving, and it has a cooler as part of the tow package. Surprisingly, the original Goodyear tires lasted 92k miles! Additionally, I'm still on the original disk brake pads at 108k miles. Overall, this is the best truck I have ever owned.

I have a Ford F 250 XLT extended cab that has been garage kept and well-maintained. Recently, I noticed another truck like mine with rusted out rear fender wells. Upon inspection of my own truck, I saw signs of rust stains on the opposite side. After consulting with a body shop, I learned that Ford has a known issue with rust in the rear fender wells due to an extra panel that traps water and causes rust. Although the repair cost is $2,700, I am confident that once fixed, my Ford will continue to perform at its best. While this issue is disappointing, I remain loyal to the Ford brand and have no plans to switch to another truck manufacturer. Despite being eleven years old with 50,000 miles, my truck is still in great condition and well-maintained. I am confident that with proper care, it will continue to serve me well.
