2019 Audi S5 problems

audi logo

The Audi S5 is one of two high-performance variants of Audi's A5. It is also the coupé, cabriolet, and five-door fastback sedan versions of the fourth-generation (B8) Audi S4 saloon and estate models.

Like all Audi "S" cars, they are only available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive (4WD) system, here in S5 using a Torsen-based centre diff system.

Most versions of the S5 are manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are available as a coupé, cabriolet, and five-door sportback, which was previously not available in North America until the 2018 model year, which was released in the United States in mid 2017. The cabriolets are built at Audi's factory in Neckarsulm, Germany.

Is an Audi S5 a good car to buy?

It's genuinely enjoyable if you want to take it on twisty roads, and it doesn't sacrifice comfort and luxury. It's not perfect — the design compromises rear passenger space and visibility, and the price is a little steep for the top-end Prestige — but it's a highly compelling choice in the class."

Is an Audi S5 expensive to run?

Fuel economy

A high performance car with more than 300bhp is never going to be cheap to run and the S5 is no exception. The V8 coupe model averages just 23mpg and although the Cabriolet is better with 30mpg, it's far from economical.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
  • VIN: WAUC4CF50KA
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Our gas tank fuel level sensor is faulty so we can no longer tell how much gas is in our car. The check engine and fuel light are permanently on. This fuel sensor malfunction caused me to run out of gas in the middle of the road. The only way to fix it is to replace the entire gas tank at great expense. We were quoted $3500-$4000. We only have 44K miles on the vehicle.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-19
  • VIN: WAUC4CF53KA
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) DID NOT FUNCTION AS REQUIRED, AND PRESSURE WAS DANGEROUSLY LOW WHICH SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED THE TIRES OVER A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME (2-6 WEEKS). I AM CONCERNED GOING FORWARD IF THE TPMS UTILIZED ON THE S5 DOES NOT FUNCTION AS SHOULD BE EXPECTED PER FEDERAL REGULATIONS. PER 49 CFR 571.138 WHEN PRESSURE OF 1 TIRE UP TO 4 TIRES IS < 25% BELOW COLD INFLATION PRESSURE, A LOW PRESSURE WARNING SHOULD ILLUMINATE AND REMAIN ILLUMINATED. THE TPMS SHOULD HAVE PROVIDED AN ALERT WHEN ONE OR MORE OF MY TIRES WAS AROUND 30 PSI, YET ALL GOT TO UNDER 24 PSI WITH NO WARNING. THE AUDI SERVICE ADVISOR EXPLAINED THAT THE TPMS UTILIZED ON THE S5 IS AN INDIRECT SYSTEM THAT DETECTS CHANGE IN SPEED/CIRCUMFERENCE FOR AN INDIVIDUAL TIRE THAT WOULD INDICATE LOWER PRESSURE, AND IT WILL NOT ALERT IF PRESSURE IN ALL 4 TIRES DECREASES SIMULTANEOUSLY. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE, YET AUDI INSISTS THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE SYSTEM FUNCTIONING LIKE THIS. THE OEM TIRES ON THIS VEHICLE ARE VERY LOW PROFILE AND LARGE DECREASE IN PRESSURE IS NOT OBVIOUS FROM VISUAL INSPECTION. SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE REDUCTION OCCURRED MORE RAPIDLY WITH THIS VEHICLE THAN ANY SIMILAR VEHICLES I HAVE OWNED, SO A TPMS THAT CANNOT BE RELIED UPON IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN.

Negative 2019 Audi S5 car reviews

  1. Mohammed Hand 2025-02-04

I have owned this car for about 4 months. When it is kept in 's' mode and nothing is malfunctioning, it drives really nicely and is much faster than I would have expected. Although it has been back to the dealership for several problems already, the service department seems willing to resolve most of the issues. However, for a car this new (only 12k miles) and as expensive as it was, these problems shouldn't be there. The incessant rattling of things in the dash and the creaking, popping and groaning sounds when I leave my driveway that is somewhat steep or hitting bumps in the road are the worst things that cause me to want to get rid of it. Although the roads are pretty good where I live, it sounds like I am in a 20-year-old car that has had a rough life. I expect some banging from the firm suspension, but this goes far beyond that, especially for this level of a car. Some of the rattling has been resolved in working with the dealership, but inevitably some of it doesn't occur when I leave the car with them. Days where the weather has shifted dramatically will be days that the car has lots of unusual sounds inside. However, outside of the rattling, this car really does perform well. You won't find many other AWD cars that perform the way this car does. It also looks really good inside and out. I still stand by the fact that this car should not have any rattles for the amount of money it cost, but it is a decent sports sedan/coupe. Then you add super intrusive safety features that will actually slam on the brakes if you are moving through close traffic and the systems over-sensitive sensors (Audi pre-sense) think you are going to have an accident, it's just too much. I have lost track of how many times accidents were almost caused by this safety feature; it's too intrusive.I really like the way the car looks both exterior and interior, but I was expecting more for the money. Audi, if you are reading this, there are complaints all over the internet about these problems too.

  2. Monserrat Zemlak 2025-02-02

The crash avoidance technology in this car has some flaws that need to be addressed. During my experience with the car, I found it to be extremely intrusive and on three separate occasions, it nearly caused me to have an accident by suddenly stopping in the middle of an intersection. For example, when I was trying to cross traffic in a common left turn lane and a car came opposite, the Audi would anticipate a head-on collision and stop my car suddenly. I had a 2016 S5 and I found the technology to work just fine. However, the 2018 update changed this technology dramatically, which I did not appreciate.

  3. Merle Kerluke 2024-11-20

Driving this car was great. However, the trim at the bottom of the door hits you in the bottom of your calf when entering, which is a major problem. Unfortunately, this issue kept me from buying the Audi S5.

  4. Ottis Renner 2024-07-09

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my S5 cabrio. I had a blast driving it for 15 days, but unfortunately on day 16, the transmission broke down after around 600 miles. It was a bit of a struggle to make it back home, but thankfully I did. I've been waiting for almost a week now to have it replaced, but I'm still hopeful that it will be fixed soon. While I do have some regrets about buying it instead of leasing, I'm still looking forward to getting back on the road with my S5 cabrio once it's all sorted out.

  5. Hubert Jacobi 2024-03-03

It's worth noting that some features that come standard on Japanese competitors are only available as extra cost options on the Audi. While the base price is attractive, getting the S5 out the door can make it a less appealing value proposition. Additionally, some dealers may be less willing to offer discounts on this model, which can make it harder to find a good deal. That being said, it may be worth exploring other options to find the best value for your needs.

Positive 2019 Audi S5 car reviews

  1. Roscoe Schmitt 2025-03-05

I really enjoyed reading your review of the 2018 Audi! It sounds like Audi has really stepped up their game with this new generation. The interior design, materials, and switch gear have all been improved, giving the car a higher level of sophistication. The suspension changes are noticeable and provide a more sure-footed feel, which is great to hear. It's also impressive that the understeer tendency has been eliminated when aggressively taking corners. The Turbo engine provides low-end torque, making the car feel much quicker with surges of power that are more instantaneous across the RPM band than the previous generation. The changes to the MMI took a little getting used to, but now it's second nature and accessing information is faster with the new button layout. Inputting information is also easier, especially with the touch handwriting recognition. The MMINavi computer is much faster, with no lag time between screens, and the navigation display is amazingly sharp with accurate directions. The visual cockpit is a joy to use, with information right in front of you where it should be. I'm glad to hear that the multi-gauge setups are also a great feature. Even the B&O stereo system is a step up in sound quality. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice in upgrading to the 2018 Audi!

  2. Jessie Moen 2025-02-01

This sports car is perfect for those who want a thrilling ride without sacrificing comfort. The road grip and acceleration are incredible, and it handles like a dream. Even when pushed to the limit, it feels like you're on a rail. Plus, it's surprisingly fuel-efficient, getting 33-35 MPG on road trips and averaging 27 MPG overall. The seat comfort is fantastic, even on long trips, and the passing power is impressive. The only downside is that the top-down 360-degree camera view doesn't work as advertised, but a software fix is pending. Overall, this car is flawless. However, it may not be the best choice for older passengers who need something to hold onto when getting in and out or when driving aggressively. If you're looking for a friendly and thrilling ride, this car is perfect for you!

  3. Carter Kreiger 2025-01-18

It's great to hear about your experience with the S5! It's been about 10 years since you last owned a German car and with great excitement, you bought the S5. You had everything you wanted: horsepower, handling, all wheel drive and it looked awesome! Your friends said quality and reliability was unbeatable. However, it seems that the windows don't really work when it gets cold. It's frustrating to spend $60K for a car and the windows won't work. You took it to the dealership twice and although they couldn't replicate the issue the second time, it's still a bummer. You're waiting for the lease to complete and you can go back to the reliable Acura. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  4. Hermann Kerluke 2025-01-11

This car is amazing! It drives like a dream and handles like a charm. Although the technology may seem overwhelming at first, once you get the hang of it, it's fantastic. The cabin is designed with the driver in mind, with perfect ergonomics and controls. The high-quality diamond-stitched Nappa leather and sound system are just a few examples of the great materials used. The virtual cockpit is incredible to use, and the engine response is superb. The acceleration is incredible, and the handling is so balanced that it's way out of its class. I could go on and on about how great this car is, but all I can say is that this was my first Audi S5 series, and it definitely won't be my last!

  5. Deion Sauer 2024-11-20

Great German quality! This outstanding vehicle boasts exceptional technology and performance. Even after 5 years, the build quality is still top-notch. I recently replaced the brakes, rotors, and tires, and the handling and performance are still fantastic. For everyday use, the single turbo is more than enough. The only downside is the lack of rear cup holders, but that's a minor inconvenience. 😆
