2022 Hyundai Kona electric problems
The Hyundai Kona (Korean: 현대 코나) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. The first-generation Kona debuted in June 2017 and the production version was revealed later that year. It is positioned between the Venue or Bayon and the Tucson in Hyundai crossover SUV line-up. The battery electric version called the Kona Electric (or Kona EV) was first launched in South Korea during the first half of 2018 and rolled out gradually worldwide afterwards.
Naming
The Kona is named after the western district of the island of Hawaiʻi. The company stated the name "reflects the lifestyle of modern customers", in line with its "progressive design" that it adopts. The Kona naming also continues Hyundai's tradition of naming crossover SUV models after famous travel destinations, including the Creta, Santa Fe, Tucson and Veracruz.
The vehicle is marketed in Portugal as the Hyundai Kauai, as Kona is too similar to cona, a slang word for the female genitalia in European Portuguese. It's also sold in Iceland where the word kona means woman in Icelandic. Like Kona, Kauai is a place in Hawaii. It is also Hawaiian for lady.
In China, the vehicle was sold as the Hyundai Encino.

Common 2022 Hyundai Kona electric problems
The Hyundai Kona Electric, introduced in 2019, has been a popular choice for those seeking an electric vehicle with good range and competitive charging speeds. However, as with any vehicle, there have been some common problems reported by owners.
One issue that has been reported is related to the battery. Some 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric buyers have experienced early battery replacement within the first five months of ownership. This can be a significant inconvenience, as it not only requires a costly replacement but also the time and effort to find technical support who can properly address the problem.
Another issue that has been reported is related to electrical accessories. Some owners have experienced problems with the charging pad, with phones becoming extremely hot to the touch and battery power decreasing while charging.
The warranty coverage of the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric offers some protection against these potential repair concerns. With most of the notable issues buyers encountered coming within the first five months to 18 months after purchase, while mostly being powertrain and basic components related, Hyundai's comprehensive 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty or the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty provides coverage. This can help to reduce maintenance and repair costs.
Before purchasing a used 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric, it's important to look out for maintenance milestones. If buying at 15,000 miles, check if the climate control air filter has been replaced while inspecting the battery. This tends to be approximately the mileage owners claimed they faced battery failure issues. At 35,000 miles, check to be sure that the reduction gear fluid has been inspected, the car’s coolant has been replaced, and the tire pressure has been inspected.
In conclusion, while the Hyundai Kona Electric is a popular and capable electric vehicle, it is not without its issues. Owners have reported problems with the battery, electrical accessories, and other components. However, the vehicle's warranty coverage can help to reduce maintenance and repair costs. When purchasing a used 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric, it's important to be aware of these potential issues and to look out for maintenance milestones.
Is the Hyundai Kona reliable?
The 2024 Hyundai Kona has a predicted reliability score of 82 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
Are there any recalls on the 2022 Hyundai Kona?
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, 2022 Santa Cruz, Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles. The vehicle's "fail-safe" limited-mobility drive mode may be impaired, when prompted by a transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power.
How long will a Kona Electric battery last?
between 3-5 years
Hyundai Kona batteries usually last between 3-5 years, but this is variable depending on the type of battery, driving habits, weather conditions, and more.
Does the Hyundai Kona have transmission problems?
Or even complete transmission failure. While this is not a widespread. Issue it is something to be aware of if you're considering a Kona. Once again this is common on the cars with the 2-liter engine.

- Summary: There were several recall/service notices on my vehicle. I brought car to dealer in May and they were unable to address them all b/c I was informed a dealer specific piece of equipment necessary for the recall had broken and they could not address that issue. Why is it saying on NHTSA website zero unaddressed recalls for my car? Here are some of the notices: Service Campaign 9A4: Kona EV DTC Inspection, BMS Update, and BSA Replacement – Dealer Best Practice August 29, 2023 I believe there was an additional issue of concern. I originally scheduled for early 2024 & then there was an additional recall/concern and I could not be accommodated until May 2024; however, as mentioned, they were unable to address all the issues at that time. Please let me know.

- Summary: Started my 2022 Kona EV as usual in my driveway in Southern California in May 2023. Vehicle started then flashed "Check Vehicle System (EV) failure code appeared. Car would not stay started. Had it towed to Dealer they kept if for 2 week and called me to say the vehicle was fixed and I could come pick it up. Repair Order said that the "EV Safety Plug failed upon testing" That was a Friday afternoon. Drove the vehicle home and it seemed to be fixed. The next day (Saturday) went out in the am to run errands and got the same code again and again it wouldn't run. Again had it towed to Dealer (with poor Hyundai Roadside Service). It remains there as I suspect the Dealer tried an easy fix instead of a major one. Will update with status. Already a California Lemon Law buyback situation. I'm not even going to try to work it out because the new car is not operating as advertised. Car is unreliable.

Drained 3 batteries before it was found to be the culprit. Radio on backorder with no sign of ever showing up. Car has been at the dealer long enough to trigger the lemon law in CA. Considering the buyback as I have made two lease payments without the car in my possession6 weeks.

- Summary: The following was posted on 12/5/22 on Kona Owners Forum: "USA location. Have a '22 Kona (EV; but, that apparently that not relevant to problem). Horn stopped working at about 7500 miles. Immediately made appt with dealer. On day of service there was another 2022 Kona (gas powered) in shop for same thing. Since I only have one car and wife with Alzheimer's, dealer checked obvious things and released me, saying the other owner could leave their Kona for detailed diagnosis. Dealer reported back to me that they believed they had found problem with other Kona, ordered part and would let me know if problem would be solved for the other Kona. If problem solved they would replace my part, of course under warranty. Today I was informed part didn't fix other Kona. So, I am without horn and dealer back to square one. Dealer said there is no recall and no tech bulletin addressing this problem. I can see from forum history that many have experienced a failed horn. HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED A SOLUTION? If so, please share solution. Dealer welcomes any info I can provide. I think I will also report this to US Dept of Transportation, since 'no horn' is a safety hazard and may in fact be illegal.

- Summary: The 12V battery keeps draining on this 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric. This problem happened when I owned the car for 7 months, I believe the battery management system from Hyundai caused the ruin and drainage to the 12V battery. It has happened 10 or more time ever since the battery keeps draining and Hyundai refused to take any responsibility in their faulty 12V battery.

- Summary: This 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric keep draining the battery after I charged my electric car overnight. It has happened 6 or 7 times now, which I think Hyundai needs a recall on this car. It killed the 12V battery after fully charged the car. Something has drained the battery completely. It is very annoying when this happened.

- Summary: The car turned into a bricked mode 3 times after I fully charged the car to 100%. The car cannot open or start the engine. The battery was dead or drained somehow. I have to jump start the battery and reset the battery terminals in order for it to work again. Now the braking warning light has stayed on after I reset the battery terminals. I think this 2022 Hyundai Kona EV has some electrical issues that Hyundai need to fix or be aware of.

- Summary: After only having 2300 miles on my 2022 Kona electric I received a warning indicator on my dash, “Electrical system error.” I looked in the manual and was directed to take the car to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the issue and shared that the battery itself is defective and a new one will need to be ordered. As a result, I began some online research into the issue. It appears that similar issues arose within previous year models, and some even resulted in fires once the battery reached 100%. I also read other stories about how batteries had inconsistent charging rates. I Experienced an issue with inconsistent charging rates prior to the error message but assumed it was simply me not remembering the percentage it was at when initially plugged in. After reading the issues I quickly realized it was not a fluke. I also felt it important to report bc I asked the dealer if they had encountered any other issues with the Kona EV and it’s battery units and they said no. Obviously, this was before I did my own research, and am more very surprised they said they have had no other issues knowing that their copy recalled nearly 100,000 cards recently for faulty batteries.

Great car! It handles really well and has a comfortable ride. I particularly like the well thought out interior of the Base SEL model.
-
The car gets very close to the advertised range at 70 mph, which is definitely a plus. In and around town, it gets well over 300 miles per charge. Of course, if you're blasting the AC or heat, the HVAC will diminish the range, so expect less. With 295 ft-lbs of torque, it really goes in sports mode. The adjustable regen modes with paddles are a nice touch. It's a small crossover SUV, so there's limited cargo space with the seats up, but it's cavernous with them down. I managed to fit a 24-inch dishwasher in the box in the back with the seats down. The plastic interior is meh, but I got the ultimate trim, so the heated and cooled front seats are awesome.
-
The car is everything you could hope for! You drive 80 miles each way to and from work, so it's great to hear that in 8 months and 30000 miles, service and maintenance have been easy. It sounds like owning this car has been a real pleasure!
-
You've got plenty of power, and the handling is both responsive and smooth. The car comes with great safety features, and while it may have more features than you need, it's still a very nice car overall.
-
You've got yourself an excellent vehicle with plenty of cargo space when the seats are folded down!

I have the 2021 Kona electric prefer model. Unfortunately, I have experienced two negative issues so far. The breaking system has a definite problem, and I believe Hyundai should look into a recall for this issue. I did not hear any sound during the test drive or the first few weeks after purchase. However, every time I touch the brakes, I hear a “clunk” sound from the rear brakes. I took it to the dealer, and they had heard about it before. They changed my brakes after 2000 kilometers, but unfortunately, the “clunk” sound returned three weeks later. I believe Hyundai should seriously consider a recall for this problem as it is frustrating to hear this sound every time I touch the brakes on a brand new car. Secondly, I took my Kona in for an inspection at 4000 kilometers and informed them that there is not much heat in the car. On most regular cars, the temperature can go to 30 degrees then to HIGH. However, in the Kona, the maximum temperature is 27 degrees with NO HIGH. I drove 15 minutes to get to the dealer, and there was not much heat in the car. The mechanic explained that the maximum temperature is 27 degrees, and there is no high setting to avoid draining the battery too much. He also explained that regular cars get their heat from the prestone system, but in electric cars, it is only an element that gives the heat. I understand that this may be a concern for my wife, who drives this car, during the winter. However, the mechanic suggested that we can start the car to warm it up before entering it. I understand that this may not be a perfect solution, but it is worth a try. I am hopeful that we can find a way to make this work and enjoy our Kona even during the cold winter months.Good morning Hyundai, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring to your attention a couple of issues that I have been experiencing with my vehicle. I have noticed that the heating system is not sufficient for the harsh Canadian winters, and I was hoping that this could be addressed in future models. Additionally, I have found that the air conditioning system works well. Thank you for your attention to these matters. Best regards, Bob from Laprairie, Quebec.

During my test drive, I noticed that the compartments were smaller than I anticipated and the acceleration was a bit slow. However, I am confident in my assessment that this car does not meet my expectations for comfort and performance.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to check in and see if there's any update on your Kona. I remember you mentioned that the battery died a couple of months ago and it's still in the shop waiting for a new one. Is there anything I can do to help? Let me know if you need anything!

We leased a 2021 Kona Electric in May 2021. Unfortunately, we have had to bring the car back to the service department three times due to a battery malfunction. While we understand that EV technology can be complex, we have found that the service department could benefit from additional training and knowledge of the EV product line. When we have asked about the issue, we have been informed that the computer needed to be reset. However, we believe that there may be an underlying issue given the number of times we have had to bring the car in for malfunctions. Additionally, we have noticed that the car handles poorly on tight turns and can be unsteady if you accelerate too fast. Despite these issues, we appreciate that the Kona Electric is a more affordable option compared to Tesla. We do wish that repairs could be done remotely, as is the case with Tesla, but we understand that this is not always possible. Overall, we hope that Hyundai can continue to improve their EV technology and service department to provide a better experience for their customers.
