The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. It was introduced in 1995 to replace the Acura Vigor and was badged for the Japanese-market from 1996 to 2000 as the Honda Inspire and from 1996 to 2004 as the Honda Saber. The TL was Acura's best-selling model until it was outsold by the MDX in 2007. In 2005, it ranked as the second best-selling luxury sedan in the United States behind the BMW 3 Series, but sales decreased after the 2008 model year. Four generations of the Acura TL were produced, with the final fourth generation TL premiering in 2008 as a 2009 model and ending production in 2014, when it was replaced together with the TSX by the TLX.

First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)

The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.

The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.

The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.

The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

Common 1997 Acura Tl problems

The 1997 Acura TL has been reported to have several common problems, including issues with the automatic transmission, suspension, visibility, airbags, and electrical systems.

One of the most significant problems with the 1997 Acura TL is related to the automatic transmission. In 1999, there were two recalls related to the transmission. The first recall, dated 1999-08-19, involved a transmission case bolt that could loosen and fall out, allowing the transmission to disengage from the differential. The second recall, dated 1999-05-10, concerned certain vehicles that were manufactured with ball joints that could prematurely wear out and, in the worst case, the ball joint would separate, causing the front suspension to collapse. The remedy for both recalls was for dealers to install a redesigned bolt or replace the front suspension lower ball joints, respectively.

In addition to the recalls, there have been several complaints about the automatic transmission. For example, there have been reports of a 1-2 shift problem, where the customer may complain of a delay or hesitation when shifting from first to second gear. This issue was the subject of a manufacturer communication in 1999-04-23 and 1998-01-01, which provided information regarding automatic transmission 1-2 complaints and recommended actions for dealers to take.

Another common problem with the 1997 Acura TL is related to the suspension. Specifically, there have been reports of slow windows, high pitched noise when closing the back windows, hard shifts from first to second gear, and marks on the window from opening and closing them. These issues may be related to the window regulator, transmission, or other components of the suspension system.

There have also been reports of visibility problems with the 1997 Acura TL. For example, there have been complaints about the rearview mirrors/devices, with a service bulletin issued in 1997-06-01 regarding replacing the exterior mirror housing. Additionally, there have been complaints about the check engine light, which may indicate a problem with the emissions system or other components of the vehicle.

Another safety concern with the 1997 Acura TL is related to the airbags. In 2004-01-16, there was a manufacturer communication regarding the airbag on/off switch assembly, which provided an application chart for the airbag on/off switch. This communication may be relevant for owners of the 1997 Acura TL who are concerned about the safety of their vehicle.

Finally, there have been reports of electrical problems with the 1997 Acura TL. For example, there have been complaints about the starter dying during cold weather, the D4 light burning out, and wind noise from the driver side window at high speeds. These issues may be related to the starter motor, wiring, or other components of the electrical system.

In conclusion, the 1997 Acura TL has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including issues with the automatic transmission, suspension, visibility, airbags, and electrical systems. While some of these issues may be minor, others may require significant repairs or replacement of components. Owners of the 1997 Acura TL should be proactive in addressing these issues and seek the advice of a qualified mechanic or dealership if they experience any problems.

Negative 1997 Acura Tl car reviews

  1. Kelley Rath 2024-07-01

I recently had to quickly find a replacement car when my BMW broke down. As many others have mentioned, I believe that this car will last me at least another decade with minimal maintenance. However, I do have some concerns about whether I would actually want to keep it for that long. From the outside, it looks very similar to a Honda Accord with an Acura badge attached to it. The Honda stamps on the glass don't help either. Additionally, the controls such as the wipers, cruise control, and even the horn are identical to the ones found in the Accord my family owned back in 1978. There doesn't seem to have been much evolution in this regard. The engine is also a bit of a disappointment. It can only break 10 seconds in the 0-60 test if I manually shift, and it's not very exciting when passing other cars.

  2. Murl Wolff 2024-06-13

This car is reliable and predictable, with good quality of fit and finish. Although it may lack the soul and spirit of a European car, it does everything it is supposed to do without any compromise on performance. The Acura dealership is excellent and the overall cost of ownership is low. The car has a quiet ride and a good stereo. However, there are some downsides such as wind noise, poor layout of dash, low unsupportive seats, miniscule trunk space, bland styling, cheap feeling leather, rough idle (typical for 5 cylinder), no tilt on sunroof and tendency to fog up on rainy days.

  3. Maximilian Christiansen 2024-05-26

The 2.5 TL model has had some issues in the past, but Acura has taken steps to address them through recalls and improvements. It's important to do your research and make an informed decision when purchasing a car. Acura is a subsidiary of Honda, a well-respected car manufacturer known for their quality vehicles. While there have been some reported issues with TL models, it's important to note that not all owners have experienced these problems. It's always a good idea to speak with current owners and read reviews before making a purchase.

Positive 1997 Acura Tl car reviews

  1. Deven Ullrich 2025-02-14

I'm glad to hear that you've had no problems with your car for the past 21 months, even with all the mileage you've put on it! Occasionally, the brakes squeal a bit and there's some road noise, but I find that turning up the great stereo system helps drown it out. It's impressive that you've already put 15,000 miles on it in just 7 months! With the way you take care of it, I'm sure it will last another 100,000 miles. When the time comes to get a new car, I would definitely recommend another Acura!

  2. Sid Trantow 2025-01-10

I've had this car for a decade now, and it's been a reliable companion. Apart from the usual oil changes and maintenance, I've only had to replace the on-board computer connector, which cost me $250. With almost 100k miles on the clock, it's time for a timing-belt change, but that's to be expected.

  3. Dedrick Zieme 2025-01-07

Just got a used one, so far so good! I'm really pleased with everything. I do wish they made this model with the vtech engine though, I'm kind of surprised they didn't!

  4. Darrion Gutmann 2025-01-07

Overall, the car is pretty solid. My only complaints are the road noise and the sheer wind factor on the driver's side. Cush claims this is a design problem and cannot be fixed. However, I find this hard to believe in a car that was sold in the 30s when new. The sheer wind factor can be very irritating, and I would love to be able to fix it. I must say that the Cush dealership is great, and I would definitely buy from them again.

  5. Manuela Schneider 2024-11-20

Car handles excellent. Power is what you'd expect from Acura - great. You've had your TL for 3 years and put 70k miles on it. No mechanical or appearance problems. You'll definitely buy another Acura.
