Common 1993 Ford Tempo problems
The Ford Tempo, produced from 1984 to 1994, was a sedan designed to be environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient. However, it suffered from a number of common problems that affected its reliability and performance. These issues were based on complaints from owners of this car.
- Poor Idle and Engine Stalls: One of the most common issues reported by Ford Tempo owners was poor idle and engine stalls. This problem was often attributed to faulty ignition systems, which could cause the engine to stall while driving. This issue was particularly prevalent in the 1993 model year, with two complaints specifically citing the fuel pump as the cause of the problem.
- Engine Stalls: The engine stalling issue was not limited to poor idle conditions. Some owners reported that their Tempos would stall without warning while driving, which could be a serious safety hazard. This problem was reported across multiple model years, including 1992 and 1993.
- Hesitation on Acceleration: Another common complaint from Tempo owners was hesitation on acceleration. This issue was often attributed to faulty fuel systems, which could cause the engine to hesitate or stall when attempting to accelerate. This problem was reported across multiple model years, including 1993.
- Oil Leaks: Oil leaks were a common problem reported by Tempo owners, particularly in the 1998 model year. This issue could lead to decreased engine performance and increased wear and tear on engine components.
- Vibrations: Some Tempo owners reported experiencing vibrations while driving, which could be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty wheels or suspension components. This problem was reported across multiple model years, including 1993.
- Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump was a common point of failure for the Tempo, with two complaints specifically citing the fuel pump as the cause of engine stalls in the 1993 model year. This issue could lead to decreased engine performance and increased wear and tear on engine components.
- Recall Issues: The Tempo was subject to several recalls, including a recall for a faulty ignition switch that could cause fires even when the engine was off. This recall affected models made between 1988 and 1993, and was one of the largest safety recalls by a single car manufacturer in history.
In summary, the Ford Tempo suffered from a number of common problems that affected its reliability and performance. These issues included poor idle, engine stalls, hesitation on acceleration, oil leaks, vibrations, fuel pump failure, and recall issues. These problems were reported across multiple model years, with the 1993 model year being particularly problematic.

I'm glad to hear that you've had little to no problems with your car! It's great that you've been able to keep it maintained so well. I did notice that you mentioned having to replace the speedometer cable a few times due to noise, but overall it sounds like it's been a perfect car for 13 years.

I really appreciate your car! It still has a lot of power and I love the V6 engine and 5-speed manual. It's great to hear that the engine has never broken down for you or the previous owners. Although there are a few issues with the car, such as the right-rear door lock and window motor, it's good to know that the A/C is still working great. Overall, it sounds like a very reliable and enjoyable car to drive.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. Back in 1998, I bought this lovely car from a friend. It has a 4 cylinder engine and had already clocked over 140,000 miles. Despite this, I have been driving it for six years and 50,000 miles with only minor problems, mostly normal wear items. I did have some issues with the power door locks not working properly, but other than that, everything has been great. Recently, the original transmission finally failed at 194,000 miles, but the original engine still runs great and all the accessories still work, including the AC. I'm now trying to decide whether to fix it or look for another Tempo. Overall, I have been extremely pleased with this car and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable ride.
Chester Strosin 2024-10-29
While this car may not be the safest or most reliable option, it is important to note that regular maintenance and part replacements can help keep it running smoothly. Additionally, it is advisable to drive with caution and avoid any collisions, as the bumper may not withstand high impact.
Pete Metz 2024-10-13
198m000 miles with no major repairs. What more do I need to say? I want a new car, but how can you give up on the 'humbler'? That's what we call it because it's a humbling experience to drive it.
Hayley Keeling 2024-09-15
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my vehicle. Despite my best efforts to maintain it, I've had to spend between $1500 and $3000 each year on repairs. Unfortunately, it has finally given up on me. I'm glad to be moving on from the Tempo!
Larry Bailey 2024-08-07
I would advise against purchasing one of these cars. Unfortunately, they tend to require frequent repairs, which can quickly become costly. It seems that every time one issue is resolved, another arises. In my opinion, it is not a wise investment and I would recommend considering other options.
