2004 Volkswagen Phaeton problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Phaeton ( /ˈfeɪtən/ FAY-tən) (Typ 3D) is a full-size sedan/saloon manufactured by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen, described by Volkswagen as their "premium class" vehicle. Introduced at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show, the Phaeton was marketed worldwide. Sales in North America ended in 2006 and global sales ended in 2016.

The name Phaeton derives from Phaëton, the son of Phoebus (or Helios) in Greek mythology, by way of the phaeton auto body style and the type of horse-drawn carriage that preceded it.

Production ended in March 2016 and an all-electric second generation was slated to be produced. Starting in April 2017, the Gläserne Manufaktur Dresden began assembling the e-Golf instead.

What was the luxury car failure of Volkswagen?

Great car to drive long distances. It's extremely comfortable.

I love this vehicle! There is no question that it rides, performs, and handles better than the BMW 745Li and Mercedes-Benz S500 4matic, hands down. That's why I just purchased one for 70k. You get a lot for your money. So, if you're in this price level, go out and take a look at one. It might be a VW, but this is a world-class car and, in my opinion, the leader of the pack.

If you're considering purchasing a Phaeton, I highly recommend test driving one at your local VW dealer. In my experience, the Phaeton outperforms its so-called competitors, such as the Infinity Q45 and other 'luxury' vehicles like the Lexus 400 series. In fact, the Phaeton is designed to compete with top-of-the-line models like the S Class Mercedes and BMW 700, and it not only holds its own against these vehicles, but surpasses them in many ways. For more detailed information, please refer to the comparison chart in the Phaeton's brochure/manual.

Hi there! I recently purchased a used, certified model with 60,000 miles from a VW dealer and I couldn't be happier! The superb materials and build quality make it seem hardly used. Everything from the buttons, carpets, leather surfaces, chrome, liners, etc all look new. I have to mention the paint too - my silver reflex paint scheme is absolutely beautiful! The car is incredibly comfortable, with ample room inside, especially in the back seat area. The air suspension is sublime, making it the perfect car for long trips. Plus, it's truly exclusive, as less than 3,500 Phaetons were imported into the US. And don't worry about obtaining parts - the Phaeton remains in production, so it's not a problem. Just make sure to get it serviced by VW and consider purchasing an extended warranty. Thanks for reading!

The Phaeton is a fantastic vehicle - really, it's the same as the new Bentley Continental Flying Spur. It's fun to drive and much nicer than the S-Class and 7-Series that I have driven in the past. Although its fuel economy is not great, it's important to note that it's a very heavy vehicle - approx. 5,300 lbs. In light of the weight and performance, its fuel economy could be much worse.

I've always been curious about owning a Bentley Continental Flying Spur, but unfortunately, the price of a decent used one, currently around $65K, is out of my budget. However, after shopping for a few months, I won the bid on eBay for a low mileage V8 model Phaeton at $11,800. The Phaeton is basically the same car as the Bentley minus the turbochargers, and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations. It's more comfortable, has better audio, and handles better than my previous daily driver, a 1993 Mercedes 300CE cabriolet, despite weighing 1,000 pounds more. The only drawback is gas mileage, which is about 4 MPG less than the Benz. I added Bluetooth capability, and it's been a year and 16,000 miles since we've been using this VW as a daily driver. The total mileage is now about 84,000, and we've only had a few minor issues that were fixed under the extended warranty. We're still very happy with this Phaeton.
