1999 Isuzu Amigo problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu MU is a mid-size SUV which was produced by Japan-based manufacturer Isuzu from 1989 to 2004.

The three-door MU was introduced in 1989, followed in 1990 by the five-door version called Isuzu MU Wizard. Production of these first generation models ceased in 1998 to be replaced by a second generation. This time, the five-door version dropped the "MU" prefix, to become the Isuzu Wizard. The acronym "MU" is short for "Mysterious Utility". Isuzu manufactured several variations to the MU and its derivates for sale in other countries.

The short-wheelbase (three-door) version was sold as the Isuzu MU and Honda Jazz in Japan, with the names Isuzu Amigo and later Isuzu Rodeo Sport used in the United States. Throughout continental Europe, the three-door was called Opel Frontera Sport, with the Vauxhall Frontera Sport title used in the United Kingdom, and Holden Frontera Sport in Australia.

The long-wheelbase (five-door) version was available as the Isuzu Wizard in Japan, and in North America as Isuzu Rodeo and the Honda Passport. Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden each also sold rebadged versions of the five-door as the Opel Frontera, Vauxhall Frontera, and Holden Frontera. It was also sold as the Chevrolet Frontera in Egypt, the Isuzu Cameo and Isuzu Vega in Thailand, the Isuzu Frontier in South Africa, and as the Chevrolet Rodeo in Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia.

Common 1999 Isuzu Amigo problems

The Isuzu Amigo, a sports utility vehicle produced by Isuzu, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Engine Failure: The Isuzu Rodeo, a model closely related to the Amigo, has been reported to have engine failure issues, affecting nearly every model year. The Rodeo's 3.2-liter V6 engine is known to consume large amounts of motor oil, leading to permanent engine damage due to a lack of lubrication. This issue can cause knocking sounds, holes in the engine, and overheating, which can lead to the shutdown of important safety features such as airbags, power steering, and power braking. Despite the high frequency of this issue, Isuzu has not issued any recalls for engine failure in the Rodeo, meaning that potential repairs will be at the owner's expense.
  • Air Bag Problems: Certain 2000 Isuzu Rodeo models have been recalled due to faulty air bag modules, which were manufactured and shipped without check valve pins. This issue can lead to insufficient inflation of the passenger-side air bag in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury or death to occupants seated on the passenger side.
  • Rust Condition: Isuzu recalled about 11,000 Amigo and Rodeo Sport models from the 1998-2000 and 2001-2002 model years, respectively, due to a corrosion problem with the rear suspension. The salt used in certain states can cause the forward mounting point bracket for the rear suspension to rust and break, leading to handling problems and potential crashes.
  • No-Start Problems: Isuzu Amigo owners have reported no-start problems, which can be caused by various factors, including a faulty alternator, starter, or battery, dirty connections, ignition system issues, or fuel system problems.

In summary, the Isuzu Amigo has been reported to have several common problems, including check engine light and erratic fuel gauge operation, engine failure, air bag problems, rust condition, and no-start issues. It is essential to address these problems promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

HOWEVER, THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE CAR FRAME IS POTTED WITH LARGE RUST HOLES. I HAVE HAD SOME OF THE REACHABLE HOLES WELDED. I HAVE HAD ADDITIONAL SUPPORT BRACKETS WELDED INTO THE FRAME TO STRENGTHEN THE BADLY ROTTED AXLE AND SHOCK MOUNT POINTS. I HAVE APPLIED A RUST ENCAPSULATION PRODUCT TO THE INTERIOR OF THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE FRAME, AND RUST CONVERTER PRODUCTS TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE FRAME. THIS IS MY DAILY DRIVER. A CATASTROPHIC FRAME FAILURE IS INEVITABLE. BUT, IT CAN BE PREVENTED. THE AUTO MANUFACTURER NEEDS TO HAVE NEW FRAMES AVAILABLE TO AMIGO OWNERS WHO WISH TO PURCHASE THEM. SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-10-07
  • VIN: 4S2CM57W3X4
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: HELLO I AM THE OWNER OF A ISUZU AMIGO I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE DAMAGE TO THE UNDERCARRIAGE UNTIL AFTER I BOUGHT IT. 10-7-2012 I BROUGHT IT TO MY PERSONAL MECHANIC WHEN I FOUND THE DAMAGE ON 10-24-12. AFTER THAT, I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL, AND SENT THE CAR TO A DEALER, ISUZU CLAIMS THE RECALL HAS ALREADY BEEN TAKEN CARE OF BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER, AND THE EXCESSIVE RUST AND DAMAGE IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP AND MY PRIVATE MECHANIC SAY THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE, AND THE GAS TANK MAY FALL OUT AS A RESULT OF THE RUST DAMAGE, THE TRANSMISSION SUPPORT IS RUSTED BADLY AND THE BRAKE LINES ARE IN BAD SHAPE AS WELL. I WAS HOPING THEY WERE GOING TO JUST BUY THE CAR BACK FROM ME AS STATED IN THE RECALL LETTER, I CANT BELIEVE THEY SAY THIS DAMAGE IS NOT COVERED. I KNOW THE CAR ISN'T NEW, BUT THIS RUST IS UNBELIEVABLE. BEFORE I KNEW ABOUT THE RECALL, I HAD IT LOOKED AT AND WAS TOLD, THAT EVEN IF THE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE, THERE ISN'T ENOUGH GOOD METAL TO WELD THE NEW PARTS IN. AND WAS ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE IT. I AM HOPING YOU MAY HAVE SOME ADVICE AND GUIDANCE FOR ME. I AM STUCK NOW WITH AN UNSAFE CAR. THAT I WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO SELL TO SOMEONE ELSE. ISUZU DID ADMIT TO PART OF THIS EXCESSIVE RUST BY HONORING THE FIRST AND SECOND RECALLS, THEY HAVE TO REALIZE THERE IS MORE. I'M SURE THE DEALER WAS INSTRUCTED TO ONLY VERIFY THE PARTS LISTED IN THE RECALL AND IGNORE THE REST, AS IT IS NOT COVERED , BUT OUT OF CONCERN FOR MY SAFETY THEY STRONGLY SUGGESTED I HAVE THIS CAR TOWED OUT OF THE LOT. I GUESS THE ONLY WAY FOR ISUZU TO NOTICE IS IF I DRIVE THIS CAR UNTIL SOMETHING BREAKS OFF, AND I GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. I CANT AFFORD ANOTHER CAR RIGHT NOW. AND I CAN'T SELL THIS ONE. PLEASE HELP! *TR

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-10-01
  • VIN: 4S2CM57W7X4
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT 30 MPH, WITH THREE CHILDREN AGES 2, 8, AND 11, IN THE VEHICLE THE REAR SUSPENSION GAVE OUT N BROKE THUMPING ALONG THE ROAD, AS MY STEERING WHEEL VEERED TO THE RIGHT, YET MY VEHICLE REMAINED GOING STRAIGHT WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO BE CONTROLLED. MY MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR THE ONE MILE TO MY HOME GOING AT A SPEED OF 5MP OR LESS AS THERE WAS NO WHEEL CONTROL. AFTER CONTACTING ISUZU REGARDING THE REAR SUSPENSION RECALL, EVEN THOUGH I WAS THE REGISTERED OWNER AT TIME OF RECALL I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED, ISUZU HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO CLOSEST DEALER WHERE IT WAS DEEMED IRREPARABLE, ISUZU THEN TOOK OVER A WEEK TO CONTACT ME REGARDING BUYING BACK MY TRUCK AS A REMEDY TO THE PROBLEM, THEN REQUESTED A COPY OF MY TITLE, WHICH I SENT, THEN WANTED A COPY OF MY REGISTRATION, WHICH I SENT, AND NOW ARE ASKING FOR MY BILL OF SALE, WHICH I GAVE THE ONLY COPY OF TO THE NYSDMV, INITIALLY I WAS ONLY TOLD I NEEDED MY TITLE, NOW NEEDING EXTRA DOCUMENTS, THAT I CANNOT FURNISH WITHOUT EXTREME HASSLE, AND ALSO ARE VERY IRRESPONSIBLE, AS THEY ONLY HAVE ONE CONTACT NUMBER FOR ALL OF NORTH AMERICA, AND ONLY ONE REPRESENTATIVE ANSWERING THE PHONE, THE SITUATION IS VERY DISHEARTENING KNOWING ME AND MY CHILDREN COULD HAVE DIED HAD THE SUSPENSION LET GO 5 MINUTES PRIOR WHEN WE WERE TRAVELING AT 60MPH ON THE THRUWAY, I NEED ANSWERS AS THEY HAVE RECALLED THIS PART FOR FAULTY MANUFACTURING YET ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING TO JUSTIFY THE PROBLEM. *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-08-18
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: HELLO, I TOOK MY 1999 ISUZU AMIGO ON AUGUST 18, 2012 TO MY MECHANIC THAT HAS BEEN AUTHORIZED BY ISUZU TO DIAGNOSE THE SAFETY RECALL ISSUED UNDER THE SAFETY RECALL NOTICE IN JULY (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V306000). THE INSPECTION OF THE AREA SPECIFIED UNDER THE RECALL DISCLOSED VERY LITTLE RUST AND THAT THE MINIMUM SERVICE (CLASSIFIED BY ISUZU AS CONDITION 1) WILL APPLY. I WAS RELIEVED AND HAPPY ABOUT THE NEWS. HOWEVER, DURING THE INSPECTION, MY MECHANIC NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT RUST ISSUE WITH THE REAR INTERIOR BUMPER REINFORCEMENT (HIDDEN UNDERNEATH THE EXTERIOR RUBBER REAR BUMPER AND ONLY IS VISIBLE WHEN ON A CAR LIFT). IT WAS EXTREMELY RUSTED THROUGH AND PROVIDED NO PROTECTION TO THE AMIGO IN THE EVENT OF A REAR COLLISION. I INSTRUCTED THE MECHANIC TO LOCATE A REPLACEMENT PART AND THE REPLACEMENT REPAIR SHOULD BE PERFORMED IN A WEEK. IN TALKING TO MY MECHANIC, HE HAS SEEN THIS FREQUENTLY WITH ISUZU AMIGOS/RODEO SPORTS, GEO/CHEVY TRACKERS, AND SUZUKI VITARAS (NOT THE GRAND VITARAS). IT IS THE RESULT OF THE SALTING OF THE ROADS (AGAIN, SIMILAR TO THE CURRENT ISUZU AMIGO RECALL), AND WATER ACCESSING THE AREA DURING THE RAIN. I PLAN TO HAVE THE NEW PART RUST PROOFED BEFORE HAVING IT INSTALLED TO AVOID THIS ISSUE IN THE FUTURE. HOWEVER, I BELIEVE THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO GIVEN IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS IT AFFECTS THE REAR BUMPER. I HOPE I PROVIDED ENOUGH INFORMATION FOR YOU. *TR

  • Summary: CONTACT WAS DRIVING DOWN A SIDE ROAD AT 20MPH WHEN THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD CLUNK AND IMMEDIATELY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AND ONTO A CURB WHERE ONCE STOPPED THEY WERE ABLE TO DRIVE IT INTO A PARKING LOT BUT ONLY IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. ONCE INSPECTED, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE REAR PART OF THE FRAME WAS SO BADLY RUSTED THAT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TRAILING ARM AND MOUNT BROKE OFF THE FRAME CAUSING THE REAR AXLE TO SHIFT BACK IN FORTH UNCONTROLLABLY. WHEN TAKEN TO A FRAME REPAIR SHOP AND STATE CERTIFIED WELDER THE FRAME AND MOUNTS WERE DEEMED BEYOND REPAIRABLE AND THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION THE REAR FRAME WAS RUSTING OUT SO BAD THAT IT WAS THAT IT WAS NO LONGER STRUCTURALLY SOUND. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT ISUZU RECALLED THE 98-2002 RODEOS IN WHICH WERE STATIONED IN THE NATIONS SALT BELT. MANY OTHER OWNERS ARE ALSO HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THE AMIGO'S. THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED AS THESE VEHICLES IN THE SALT BELT ARE NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. *TR

  • Manufacturer: ISUZU MANUFACTURING SERVICES OF AMERICA
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: ISUZU IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1998-2000 AMIGO AND MODEL YEAR 2001-2002 RODEO SPORT VEHICLES, THAT WERE ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR ARE CURRENTLY REGISTERED, IN THE STATES OF MAINE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, VERMONT, MASSACHUSETTS, RHODE ISLAND, CONNECTICUT, NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, PENNSYLVANIA, DELAWARE, MARYLAND, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WEST VIRGINIA, OHIO, INDIANA, MICHIGAN, ILLINOIS, WISCONSIN, MINNESOTA, IOWA, MISSOURI, AND KENTUCKY. THESE VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE VICINITY OF THE FORWARD MOUNTING POINT BRACKET FOR THE LEFT OR RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK.
  • Consequence: EXCESSIVE CORROSION MAY RESULT IN THE LEFT OR RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET BECOMING DETACHED FROM THE FRAME, WHICH CAN AFFECT VEHICLE HANDLING AND INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET AREA. FOR VEHICLES IN WHICH LITTLE OR NO CORROSION IS FOUND, THE AREA WILL BE TREATED WITH AN ANTI-CORROSIVE COMPOUND. FOR VEHICLES IN WHICH CORROSION HAS DAMAGED THE REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET AND AFFECTED ITS CONNECTION TO THE VEHICLE FRAME, A REINFORCEMENT BRACKET WILL BE INSTALLED. IN THE RARE EVENT THE CORROSION IS SO SEVERE THAT THE REINFORCEMENT BRACKET REMEDY WOULD NOT BE APPROPRIATE, ISUZU WILL OFFER TO REPURCHASE THE VEHICLE FOR AN AMOUNT BASED ON THE KELLEY BLUE BOOK “PRIVATE PARTY” PRICE. ALL INSPECTIONS AND REMEDIES WILL BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE FOR VEHICLES THAT ARE 10 YEARS OLD OR LESS. FOR VEHICLES OLDER THAN 10 YEARS, ISUZU WILL OFFER A FREE REMEDY, BUT ONLY IF THE VEHICLE IS PRESENTED TO AN ISUZU SERVICE FACILITY DEALER WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF WHEN OWNER NOTIFICATIONS WERE ISSUED. Negative 1999 Isuzu Amigo car reviews

The Amigo is a really enjoyable car to drive, despite its simplicity and tightness. Although the 4 cylinder lacks some power, it can still take off when necessary. I have the most basic model, but I appreciate how it's readily made for the V6 and 4WD. However, the hard suspension designed for this type of car is a little too hard for a smooth ride. I don't like how the engine taps loudly when it's cold, but it sounds fine after heating up. Unfortunately, the soft top hardens due to typical New England weathering, making it very difficult to use. The 2WD model is not ideal for snowy conditions and slides very easily (although I must admit, it can be fun to slide around). Overall, it's a fun car to start with, but it may not be the best choice for school.

I purchased my Amigo back in '98 and was very happy with the price and the dealership. At first, I absolutely loved my vehicle, but unfortunately, I started experiencing problems about 6 weeks after the purchase. Despite having the starter and ignition replaced multiple times, the issue persisted. Additionally, there was a constant humming noise and some miscellaneous parts that remained unresolved since I drove off the lot with only 3 miles on the odometer. Although I brought my Amigo to 4 different Isuzu Dealerships, the starting problem has never been fixed correctly. Overall, I still love the look of the vehicle, but I don't like the headaches caused by being stranded too many times.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my convertible SUV. Although I was excited to purchase it, I have encountered some issues with it burning oil. It burns a quart of oil every thousand miles, which is quite a lot. I have owned several cars in the past, including VW's, Oldsmobiles, BMW's, and Hondas, and none of them had this issue. Even my 1975 rabbit had a similar problem, which was due to an engineering defect. Unfortunately, the dealer claims that this is normal, which is quite concerning. I would advise anyone considering purchasing this car to be aware of this issue. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

Wow, you've put 90,000 miles on your car! It sounds like you've had to do a lot of work on it, including rebuilding the transmission twice, replacing the clutch four times, the catalytic converter, and even the entire engine. You've also had to deal with small interior parts falling off, like the seat levers, sunshade brackets, the accelerator pedal, and other little pieces that you find under the seat but can't figure out where they go. That must have been frustrating, but it's great that you've been able to keep your car running for so long!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I paid only $13,300 for the basic version of this SUV, which has a 4 cylinder 5 speed. Unfortunately, the clutch went early at only 29K miles, even though I mostly drove on the freeway after rush hour. I also spilled oil on the engine, which caused the plugs to get soaked due to the design. However, overall, it's been a good vehicle and inexpensive to maintain.

Getting into this little SUV from a big crew cab truck was like going from a large bus to a sports car. The off-road handling is very good in all kinds of adverse conditions.

  2. Emmitt Schaefer 2024-09-22

I've been driving my '98 Amigo for about a year now, and it's been an absolute blast. I've taken it through deep mud and snow, and it's only gotten stuck when I buried it up to the axles. As an 18-year-old driver, I can attest that this car can handle some serious abuse. While parts can be a bit pricey, you can find some great deals online. The only downside is that the SUV is so compact that it can be a bit tricky to work on. It does burn about a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so, but the gas mileage is superior to any other SUV in its class. This just means that you'll need to check your oil more often, but the savings on gas more than make up for it. Plus, it's super easy to install a new radio and speakers on your own. And let's not forget about the cool soft top - it's a real hit with the ladies!

This has been a great SUV so far! Although the timing belt snapped at 56,000 miles, Isuzu replaced the engine for free, so I can't complain there. I'm really looking forward to driving this truck for many years to come. The all-weather handling is fantastic; I recently got to test it out driving through 2ft of snow and it handled like a charm!

  4. Magnus Weimann 2024-09-07

You have a great truck! The only thing I regret is telling people that I own an Amigo. I usually just say Isuzu.

  5. Kane Hahn 2024-07-06

The car has proven to be a great performer and an exciting drive. Although it has been involved in two accidents, one minor and one more significant, the necessary replacements have only added to its impressive performance. Additionally, it is highly fuel-efficient and ideal for long-distance trips.
