Volkswagen Id.4 problems

The Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID.5 are battery electric compact crossover SUVs produced by Volkswagen. Based on the MEB platform, the ID.4 is the second model of the Volkswagen ID. series. The production version of the ID.4 debuted in September 2020 as the first fully-electric crossover SUV under the Volkswagen brand, while the coupe-shaped variant of the ID.4 (akin to the Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron) is marketed as the Volkswagen ID.5 and was revealed in November 2021.
The ID.4 is positioned by Volkswagen as a high-volume, mass-market electric vehicle — a car for "the millions, not the millionaires," as the company claimed in its advertising. It was delivered to European customers from late 2020, and the first quarter of 2021 for the North American market.
The ID.4 was elected World Car of the Year 2021 over runner-ups Honda e and Toyota Yaris.
The vehicle was updated for the 2024 model year; this includes a new, more powerful electric motor.

Common Volkswagen Id.4 problems
The Volkswagen ID.4, a popular electric vehicle (EV), has been praised for its sleek design and modern gizmos. However, like any other vehicle, it is not without its share of common problems that may affect its owners. This article will delve into some of these issues and provide insights into potential fixes.
- Active Safety Systems: Issues with active safety systems, such as adaptive cruise control and speed-controlling functions, have been reported in the broadly similar and slightly older sibling to the ID.4, the ID 3. These problems suggest that the electrical features on the early ID cars may be prone to bugs and issues.
- In-car Electronics: Owners of the Volkswagen ID.4 have reported trouble spots related to in-car electronics, including issues with the climate system, EV charging, EV battery, noises and leaks, electric motor, steering and suspension, and brakes.
- Software Issues: Some owners have reported that the software in the ID.4 needs improvement, with the user interface being slightly buggy and not intuitive. This can affect the overall driving experience and may require software updates to address.
- Reliability: The Volkswagen ID.4 did not feature in the most recent What Car? Reliability Survey due to a lack of respondents. However, its smaller sibling, the ID 3, finished seventh out of 12 electric cars polled, indicating that the ID.4's reliability may be comparable to that of other electric vehicles in its class.
In conclusion, while the Volkswagen ID.4 is a cutting-edge electric vehicle with a sleek design and modern gizmos, it is not without its share of common problems. These issues range from engine stalling due to software or battery connection problems to infotainment system hiccups and active safety system bugs. By staying informed about these issues and being proactive in addressing them, ID.4 owners can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable driving experience.

- Summary: All instrument panels and electric panels turn black. It is not replicable, it is not predictable, and there is no fix yet available. I have been in touch with VW and my dealer multiple times, and they do not have a fix. My dealer asked me to escalate the issue to the corporate side of VW and I did - they told me that I should take it into service. We got the service center on the line and they told them the same thing they told me: there is no fix available for this issue. As we go into winter, this has now become a CRITICAL safety issue. I cannot safely drive my vehicle, particularly in the snow or in the mountains, where I live. I am appalled at their lack of regard for this issue, and have requested to trade my vehicle in for the model that does not have the issue. They have informed me that is not an option. I am at a loss - I have a vehicle that I pay for that I cannot reliably drive. I have to drive my other leased vehicle so much that we are well over the mileage. This cannot continue like this.

I noticed only 1 door handle could do this and brought in for repair. The rest requires a lot more strength and 3 of the 4 doors work, but the dealership is reluctantly replacing the failed door handle. There are many who have the same issue but many who aren’t aware the potential danger during an emergency.

My car will erratically pulled to the right for no reason and caused the right front tire to blow forcing me to have it towed to the dealer and they had to replace both front tires which cost me $900.00 to replace. The car locked up the brakes and turned it to the right causing me to sever my left outer thumb which has cost me over $700.00 so far and is going to require me to have 4+ hours of surgery on my thumb by a surgeon and they haven't given me the cost of the surgery yet but it is estimated at over $7,000.00 and I am left handed and doesn't allow me to use that hand to hold the steering wheel or anything else.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-19
- VIN: WVGDMPE26MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 1. Electronic brake system failure - the vehicle exhibited this issue and so far it appears Volkswagen does not have a resolution. Vehicle has been at the dealership for almost 2 months and they have not been able to fix. Several other reports show that this is a consistent issue with the ID4 (probably the first edition). Fixed are often temporary and the issues resurfaces again 2. Battery Module issue: it appears these vehicles have defective batteries. One module was fixed by Volkswagen - however the capacity only dropped further. I suspect there is a major issue with these batteries and pose a fire hazard (similar to Chevy Bolt) and Volkswagen is intentionally concealing this fact.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1V2JNPE81PC
- Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was backing out of an outdoor shopping center slot located at the end by the curb. I had to attempt this three times due to traffic and another car that was also trying to back out. On my third attempt, I hit the curb with my passenger rear wheel. When I changed gear to move forward, the ID4 jerked violently three times. At this point my hands were on the wheel and my feet were not on either the accelerator or the brake. Immediately after the third jerk the engine revved up and car took off. I tried to brake but was flying over 2 curb hit the road and flew over 2 more curbs with plants in the middle. The braking did not stop the vehicle. Coming up over the last curb the vehicle hit a parked car sending backward and it hit 2 more vehicles. No one was injured, since the vehicles were empty. The police did come and wrote an incident report, but not a police report because in California since it was property only they do not generate a report. However, this could have been fatal since people were waking about the parking lot. There were not any warning lights or messages. It has not as yet been inspected by by anyone . The car is available for inspection at a collision center. I am not sure which component failed and why it accelerated, or did not respond to the brake, or deploy the air bag upon impact.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
- VIN: WVGUNPE25MP

- Summary: After installing the latest over-the-air software update few days ago, our car began exhibiting a serious braking issue. When coming to a stop, the brakes lock while the vehicle is still in motion, causing a sudden and dramatic jerk forward. This occurs nearly every time we decelerate to a stop, regardless of speed or road conditions. This problem has escalated to the point where we no longer feel safe driving the car, as it poses a risk to the occupants due to its forceful nature

The manufacturer is sending a District Representative to investigate. The vehicle component was recalled in 2023 and replaced by the dealer to address this specific issue and risk. - Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: In the VW ID.4, one can retract the rear-view mirrors, making the car a bit narrower, for example for parking. Multiple times, I have started the car and been unable to extend the rear-view mirrors. Not only can I not use the rear-view mirrors, but also, I am distracted trying to figure out how to make them extend. For example, I turn the switch multiple times and failing that, I LOOK at the switch (instead of the road) to verify that I am moving the correct item. This problem has been temporarily mitigated by pulling over, turning off the car, and re-starting it.

Wow, you've owned 17 new cars since 1969, including some premium vehicles! With all that experience, you definitely know quality when you see it. I can tell you really enjoyed your 1994 Volvo 850, which sounds like an amazing vehicle for comfort and safety during your 10 years of traveling across 17 states. It's great that you found another fine vehicle in the 2020 Tiguan SEL, but I can understand how rising gas prices can be a pain. Let's get to the meat of the matter - your test drive experience. You were blown away by the ride quality and the car's ability to absorb road defects, which is really impressive. You've driven some of the top brands like Honda, Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota, but the ID4's ride quality is the finest you've experienced. And the seats! They're the finest you've ever sat in, even compared to cars and SUVs that cost up to $80k. The Infotainment system may have received some criticism, but you found it easy to customize and use once you watched a few Youtube videos. The sound quality is also pretty good for a non-premium system. The amount of details and customization options available is staggering, but you found it all very welcome. The choice of materials used inside and the fit and finish are top-notch, making the ID4 feel like a luxury vehicle. You really appreciate the classic German engineering that went into every aspect of the vehicle's design and operation, from the mechanics to the seats and storage. The 19The safety features are amazing! I was able to drive 30 miles on a rural highway without touching the pedal. The Adaptive Cruise made it effortless to follow the car in front of me at a safe distance, and the vehicle slowed perfectly to negotiate the turns. I absolutely love the brake regenerative mode, as it is smooth and not abrupt like some people think it should be. The lighting and adaptive front lights are up-to-date with the latest safety standards for night driving scenarios. The steering wheel is beefy, solid, and tight, with no slop, and I love its accuracy. The doors close with a wonderful solid bank vault type of thunk, and the auto up and down back hatch is a real delight. The storage space is simply outstanding, and the hidden compartments are cleverly applied. All in all, this vehicle is flat out fun to drive, and I can't wait to get into it and go somewhere. I'm using only the supplied 110v charging cord, and it's perfect for us as we often don't go anywhere for several days at a time. To drive this vehicle is to love it, as it rides and handles like a dream.

This car is amazing! It has exceeded my expectations - I wake up every day with a full charge and a range of 240 miles. Plus, the car is already pre-conditioned and ready to go with the AC on. The R and D drive modes are so much fun to use, and I never have to worry about running out of battery. Even with just the L1 charger, I can recoup all my miles overnight. The turning radius is the best I've ever experienced, and the features are simply exquisite. I especially love the panoramic sunroof! While there is a bit of a learning curve with any EV, the ID.4 is definitely worth the effort. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do!

I recently purchased the ID4 1st Edition from VW Boston and I must say, it is the best value for money when it comes to gas-saving EVs with good range. Unlike most EVs out there, the ID4 has a sleek and stylish design. The gas savings are impressive, as I used to commute over 200 miles daily in my SUV and now I save $600 a month in gas. Additionally, I received a $7,500 credit from Uncle Sam and a $2,500 check from the State of Massachusetts for getting an EV. This means that for the first three years of owning this excellent piece of German engineering, I am essentially net out of pocket zero. The ID4 has a range of about 280 miles on a single charge, as long as you keep your highway speed between 60-65. The safety features are top-notch and the luxury features are too many to mention. My favorite feature is the seat massage on both the driver and passenger side, and the panoramic moonroof is a close second. The car also has CarPlay/Android, semi-autonomous driving, stop and go adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, and much more. Although the voice control lags 2 or 3 seconds too long, I am sure it will improve over time with over the air updates. The infotainment system was unresponsive on day one, but VW Boston scheduled a service appointment, gave me a loaner (Jetta SEL-nice car for the price point), ordered a new computer for my infotainment, and I picked up the car two days later. The infotainment system works great now- lagging is gone and touch screen responds to tactile commands easily.I think that some people who prefer buttons may find the touchscreen controls for the car features a bit of a hassle, but I personally found it easy to get used to after a few days. When it comes to charging, I've had a good experience using Electrify America for fast charging. I was able to get about 80% charge in just 35 minutes while shopping at Home Depot, where they have charging stations in the parking lot. I also appreciate being able to charge for free at my condo's charging stations, which VW provides for three years. Overall, if you're looking for a mid-size SUV with all the features you could want in an EV, I believe the ID4 is the best choice out there. While I considered the Tesla Y, I found that the ID4's German engineering DNA gives it a better fit and finish, more in line with Audi's high standards. In my opinion, the ID4 surpasses all of VW's previous products and is sure to compete head-to-head with the Tesla Y and Mustang EV in sales. Thank you, VW, for putting out such a great product. I believe that Tesla will have to up their game now, and that can only benefit all consumers.

We haven't been big fans of VW in the past. Every time we test-drove one, it just didn't measure up to the competition. However, the ID.4 is not your typical Volkswagen, so we decided to give it a chance. We test-drove a demo and were really impressed. Three dealerships told us we'd have to order one to our exact specifications online and then wait for it to be built and shipped from Germany. But the fourth dealership we visited had one available. By sheer luck, a model (1st Edition) that was exactly what we would have ordered was sitting on the showroom floor. Apparently, the original purchaser declined delivery, so we were able to buy it. First of all, it doesn't look like any other EV on the road. It has a sleek, standard SUV look and the interior is anything but cheesy (in fact, it's almost upscale). It has a range of just over 250 miles, comes with three years of free charging through Electrify America, and a $7500 tax credit (provided you owe that much on your return). It's priced fairly (MSRP $45,100, we paid $44,400). Driving it is a pleasure - it's smooth without being sloppy, has plenty of pickup (we had no problem entering the freeway), responsive handling, comfortable seating, and is incredibly quiet. We've also driven a Tesla Model Y, but there's really no comparison. If you get the chance to test-drive an ID.4, do it. We're sure you'll be impressed too. Update: After ten months of ownership, our opinion of this vehicle hasn't changed. It's still an outstanding EV. My wife is the primary driver and she raves about it to anyone who will listen (and even some who won't). We have a 220/240 setup in the garage, so charging is never an issue. We have absolutely no regrets about our purchase.

This vehicle has been a major disappointment. The infotainment system has turned off by itself three times, the audio glitches and won't adjust, and the vehicle has even turned off when I put it in drive. The safety concerns are alarming, as the crash sensor has gone off without any trigger and the child safety feature has gotten stuck on the door. Additionally, the car play disconnects often and the infotainment system is unresponsive. To make matters worse, my vehicle was one of the 350+ vehicles with a battery recall due to improper soldering, which can cause accidents. Despite the manufacturer's claim to replace the batteries, a VW regional manager informed me that they do not have a fix yet. As a result, I have lost confidence in this vehicle and am returning it as a lemon. The safety plate screws were not put back in, which is crucial for keeping the batteries safe from the road. The AC condensation accumulates to a significant extent in this vehicle, to the point where it may seem like the 'water broke'. As the batteries are cooled by water pumping through, this caused me great concern and I had the vehicle towed to prevent any risk of overheating the batteries. I have had numerous issues with this vehicle, and seeing liquid break through and trailing behind me makes me feel unsafe. Despite attempting to fix the child safety lock for a year, it only resulted in more issues, including leaving the vehicle in the shop for 36 days, half of which the dealership refused to loan me a vehicle. I incurred over $800 of Lyft, Uber, and Amtrak costs, as I live an hour away from the nearest VW dealership.

I leased the ID4 to test out an electric car before making a purchase. I must say, I really love the look and ride of the car. However, after about 8 months, the car suddenly stopped working. The car was towed to a VW dealer near me, but unfortunately, nobody there had experience with electric cars. They then towed the car to another dealer in Ft. Myers, FL, where I bought it. It took them 2 weeks to find someone to work on it, and now it's been 3 weeks without a car. When I called to inquire about the situation, I was told that it would take another 2-3 weeks to fix the car. I was frustrated that I had to pay for a car that was sitting in the shop, but the company did offer me a car to use in the meantime. Although it wasn't an electric car, I appreciated the gesture. I was disappointed that I had to pay for gas on the rental car, but I understand that it was necessary. I called corporate to express my concerns, but unfortunately, they were not able to help me. Despite this experience, I still have a soft spot for VW, as I have loved their cars since I was a kid. However, I am disappointed with the way this situation was handled and will likely not be purchasing a VW again. I was really looking forward to the VW bus, but unfortunately, that won't be happening. I hope that others have better experiences with VW and electric cars. Thank you for listening to my rant.

I have experienced several issues with my VW Id.4 First Edition since May, which have been frustrating. Despite taking it to the dealership three times for observation, the problems persist. These include the driver's seat reclining while driving, the back-up screen appearing at high speeds, the screen turning off, the air conditioning shutting off, the windows opening by themselves, and the car not turning off. Although the dealership has been unable to find a consistent problem, I know that these issues are real. I have contacted VW Corporate, but they have not been helpful in resolving the issue. While this experience has been disappointing, it has not deterred me from seeking a solution. I remain confident that a resolution can be found, and I will continue to pursue it until the matter is resolved.
