- Summary: All instrument panels and electric panels turn black. It is not replicable, it is not predictable, and there is no fix yet available. I have been in touch with VW and my dealer multiple times, and they do not have a fix. My dealer asked me to escalate the issue to the corporate side of VW and I did - they told me that I should take it into service. We got the service center on the line and they told them the same thing they told me: there is no fix available for this issue. As we go into winter, this has now become a CRITICAL safety issue. I cannot safely drive my vehicle, particularly in the snow or in the mountains, where I live. I am appalled at their lack of regard for this issue, and have requested to trade my vehicle in for the model that does not have the issue. They have informed me that is not an option. I am at a loss - I have a vehicle that I pay for that I cannot reliably drive. I have to drive my other leased vehicle so much that we are well over the mileage. This cannot continue like this.

I noticed only 1 door handle could do this and brought in for repair. The rest requires a lot more strength and 3 of the 4 doors work, but the dealership is reluctantly replacing the failed door handle. There are many who have the same issue but many who aren’t aware the potential danger during an emergency.

- Summary: My cars backup cameras have never worked properly and the dealer keeps changing me $485.00 to run a complete diagnostic every time I take it in. My car will erratically pulled to the right for no reason and caused the right front tire to blow forcing me to have it towed to the dealer and they had to replace both front tires which cost me $900.00 to replace. The car locked up the brakes and turned it to the right causing me to sever my left outer thumb which has cost me over $700.00 so far and is going to require me to have 4+ hours of surgery on my thumb by a surgeon and they haven't given me the cost of the surgery yet but it is estimated at over $7,000.00 and I am left handed and doesn't allow me to use that hand to hold the steering wheel or anything else.

Vehicle has been at the dealership for almost 2 months and they have not been able to fix. Several other reports show that this is a consistent issue with the ID4 (probably the first edition). Fixed are often temporary and the issues resurfaces again 2. Battery Module issue: it appears these vehicles have defective batteries. One module was fixed by Volkswagen - however the capacity only dropped further. I suspect there is a major issue with these batteries and pose a fire hazard (similar to Chevy Bolt) and Volkswagen is intentionally concealing this fact.

- Summary: I was backing out of an outdoor shopping center slot located at the end by the curb. I had to attempt this three times due to traffic and another car that was also trying to back out. On my third attempt, I hit the curb with my passenger rear wheel. When I changed gear to move forward, the ID4 jerked violently three times. At this point my hands were on the wheel and my feet were not on either the accelerator or the brake. Immediately after the third jerk the engine revved up and car took off. I tried to brake but was flying over 2 curb hit the road and flew over 2 more curbs with plants in the middle. The braking did not stop the vehicle. Coming up over the last curb the vehicle hit a parked car sending backward and it hit 2 more vehicles. No one was injured, since the vehicles were empty. The police did come and wrote an incident report, but not a police report because in California since it was property only they do not generate a report. However, this could have been fatal since people were waking about the parking lot. There were not any warning lights or messages. It has not as yet been inspected by by anyone . The car is available for inspection at a collision center. I am not sure which component failed and why it accelerated, or did not respond to the brake, or deploy the air bag upon impact.

- Summary: The 12v battery powering the electrical system failed. This caused the vehicle to stop unexpectedly in the middle of a busy street worth traffic on either side of the vehicle. All attempts to restart the vehicle resulted in an error stating the electrical system has failed. The problem was reproduced at the dealership. The techs were unable to diagnose the errors. The manufacturer is sending a District Representative to investigate. The vehicle component was recalled in 2023 and replaced by the dealer to address this specific issue and risk. There were zero warning lights prior to the vehicle stalling. Once stalled, the vehicle was able to start, but unable to drive, and all dashboard warning lights activated.

- Summary: In the VW ID.4, one can retract the rear-view mirrors, making the car a bit narrower, for example for parking. Multiple times, I have started the car and been unable to extend the rear-view mirrors. Not only can I not use the rear-view mirrors, but also, I am distracted trying to figure out how to make them extend. For example, I turn the switch multiple times and failing that, I LOOK at the switch (instead of the road) to verify that I am moving the correct item. This problem has been temporarily mitigated by pulling over, turning off the car, and re-starting it.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 111, "Rear Visibility."

Vehicle year: 2021
It's no secret that the touch screen can be a bit laggy and the Phone app has a delayed connection. Unfortunately, Volkswagen has not yet delivered on their promises of vehicle software updates and the phone app leaves much to be desired. However, the car itself is loaded with features and provides a nice, quiet drive (although it can be a bit bumpy on rough roads). Only time will tell the quality of the car and its gadgets, but for now, occasional onscreen system errors have not affected the drive-ability. It's worth noting that phone support is currently unavailable and parts may be hard to come by, but don't let that deter you from considering the tempting EV-ID. Overall, it's important to be aware of these minor issues before making a purchase, but they are easy to overlook and shouldn't detract from the overall experience of owning this nice car.

The car has a lot of pros. The interior is roomy and looks great both inside and out. It is fun to drive and has plenty of pick up and speed. The turn radius is great and it maneuvers well. The AC cools you down immediately and there is plenty of distance for the battery. It looks very similar to the e-torn from the outside and is much cheaper. The ride is smooth and the moon roof is amazing in terms of size and view. The back seats have plenty of space and the headlights and rear lights are very stylish. If you are planning to get one, I would recommend getting the Pro S as the upgrades are worth it. However, there are a few cons to consider. The front window allows too much sun in at a bad angle that causes glare off screens and heat on the driver. In direct sun, the car heats up too much even with the moon roof shaded. If you live in a sunny area, I would suggest getting a front window shade. Additionally, the voice activation is worthless, but it is not needed. I wish it had an upgrade for better speakers.

I've owned several EVs, including the original Chevy Bolt EV and my Model 3 Performance. However, I must say that this VW is the most well-rounded option of them all! The German build quality is evident throughout, and it's incredibly refined at higher speeds. When DC fast charging, it maintains 100kw+ all the way past 70% soc, making it the perfect road trip machine with its reliable fast charging. I believe it's an excellent fit for most people and is endlessly practical, with enough room for four adults and a weekend's worth of stuff. Although I've had a hard time finding faults, I'd say the audio system is average. Perhaps a Fender upgrade, like the other VWs get, would be a nice-to-have, but now I'm just nitpicking. I purchased this to replace my Subaru Outback, and I couldn't be happier!

We haven't been big fans of VW in the past. Every time we test-drove one, it just didn't measure up to the competition. However, the ID.4 is not your typical Volkswagen, so we decided to give it a chance. We test-drove a demo and were really impressed. Three dealerships told us we'd have to order one to our exact specifications online and then wait for it to be built and shipped from Germany. But the fourth dealership we visited had one available. By sheer luck, a model (1st Edition) that was exactly what we would have ordered was sitting on the showroom floor. Apparently, the original purchaser declined delivery, so we were able to buy it. First of all, it doesn't look like any other EV on the road. It has a sleek, standard SUV look and the interior is anything but cheesy (in fact, it's almost upscale). The range is just over 250 miles, and we get three years of free charging through Electrify America, plus a $7500 tax credit (if you owe that much on your return). The price is fair (MSRP $45,100, but we paid $44,400). Driving it is a pleasure - it's smooth without being sloppy, has plenty of pickup (we had no problem entering the freeway), responsive handling, comfortable seating, and it's incredibly quiet. We've also driven a Tesla Model Y, but there's really no comparison. If you get the chance to test-drive an ID.4, do it. You'll be just as impressed as we were. Update: After ten months of ownership, our opinion of this vehicle hasn't changed. It's still an outstanding EV. My wife is the primary driver and she raves about it to anyone who will listen (and even some who won't). We have a 220/240 setup in the garage, so charging is never an issue. We have absolutely no regrets about our purchase.

We recently turned in our Tigaun at the end of its lease and leased the ID.4 Pro S in white with a grey interior. The white color with black trim accents looks great. The ID.4 Pro S is superior in almost every respect to the Tigaun, which was already a fantastic vehicle. This weekend, we took it out for a road trip through the Sierra foothills, driving on a mix of highways, small towns, and winding country roads. We only used 27% of the battery in over 2 hours of driving, achieving an impressive 3.3 miles per kw in terms of efficiency. The car is extremely smooth on the road, comfortable, quiet, fast, and handles well. We are really happy with our purchase. Update: 09/03. We wanted to drop a line after owning the car for longer. We still stick with our earlier impressions - the car is just awesome. It really is a sum of many parts that all add up to make it an enjoyable car to own. We have now taken it on a couple of road trips of over 350 miles and driven through various conditions. The car has performed extremely well in all scenarios. We saw one review complaining about interior material quality, but that couldn't be further from the truth. We really think VW overbuilt this car to ensure it was successful in a new market, and it just feels solid throughout. After a lot of driving, our kw per mile average stands at 3, which is not bad at all. That is mixed town, highway, and hills driving. We have never had range anxiety or worried about range once. Oh, and another thing - we see reviews complaining that it doesn't accelerate like a Tesla. No, it doesn't, but it is very fast and just a blast to drive. It is kind of like riding a motorcycle - that instant power and ability to quickly zip into traffic is awesome. We have never thought, 'wow, I wish I had more power.' It also corners extremely well. We really pushed it around a freeway on-ramp, and we gave up before it did. It was just glued to the road. It also just looks awesome, especially at night. It is a rolling light show, and we have had people stop us to ask questions about the car.I'm excited for the first major software update that will address some minor issues with the software. Overall, my experience with the vehicle has been fantastic!

In April 2021, my husband and I test-drove five electric cars. While he opted for a Tesla Model 3, I preferred the ID.4 since it had real buttons and felt more like a traditional car. We ordered both cars on the same day. He received his Tesla two months later, and when my old car started breaking down, I drove the Tesla quite a bit and got used to it. My ID.4 (AWD Pro-S) arrived exactly one year after I ordered it. It's a beautiful car (I got the red), and I receive many compliments on it. It seems very well-built both outside and inside. However, I have been experiencing some issues while driving it. Firstly, the software is super buggy and slow to respond. It seems like it is based on CPU technology from a couple of decades ago. If I tap something, there is a lag of a second or two, and I'm never sure if my tap was registered. Secondly, I cannot listen to audio via AirPlay from my iPhone. It works for a while, but then starts cutting out or stops altogether. I brought it to VW service, and they said that it overwhelms the infotainment system, so their solution was to disable the onscreen map. That didn't fix it, so now I not only cannot listen to my podcasts, but I don't have the map either. Thirdly, the voice command feature is not very reliable. Even simple three-word requests aren't recognized. Fourthly, driving is laggy. If I press on the accelerator, there's maybe a half-second delay. Lastly, there is no one-pedal driving. Despite these issues, I'm hopeful that VW will address them soon.Once you get used to one-pedal driving, you'll never want to go back. The Tesla has strong regenerative braking, which brings the car to a complete stop when you take your feet off both pedals. It's such a natural way to drive. Although the ID.4 also has regenerative braking, it is comparatively weak and requires frequent use of the brakes, which can cause brake pad wear. Most irritatingly, taking your feet off both pedals causes the car to creep forward. However, it's important to note that this is because it's programmed to Yay! Unfortunately, the car cannot tell you where the chargers are. However, I found a helpful app that does the job for me. I can also estimate whether I have the range to make it to the next charger. While Tesla may be ahead in this area, I'm still enjoying my ID.4. I'm looking forward to future updates that will resolve any software issues and improve the driving experience. While there may be other solid alternatives out there, I believe the ID.4 has great potential. I hope that VW continues to embrace the new EV paradigm and make improvements to their vehicles.

Additionally, it's worth mentioning that the ID.4 comes with a trailer hitch receiver, which can be used to install a fold-up bike rack. While the rack may obscure a bit of the back-up camera, there are ways to work around this issue. Lastly, while road trip charging on the Electrify America network can be a bit of a chore, it's worth noting that the ID.4 comes with free charging for three years. Overall, the ID.4 is a great car with some minor quirks that can be easily worked around.Yay! Unfortunately, the car cannot tell you where the chargers are. Goods: The car rides comfortably and smoothly, with a spacious back seat. At low speeds, it is impressively quiet. The exterior design is attractive and stands out among other EVs. The car's technology is user-friendly and offers a variety of features to make driving easier. Visibility is excellent, and the air conditioning works very well. Bads: Although the interior is sleek, the overuse of piano black can be a bit overwhelming. The infotainment system could be smoother compared to other competitors. The touch area for the volume and temperature controls is not illuminated, making it difficult to see at night. Fingerprints tend to show up easily on the infotainment screen. At speeds above 60 miles per hour, there is noticeable wind noise. The pedestrian sound at speeds under 20 miles per hour is louder than necessary and exceeds US standards. There are some design and assembly issues in certain areas that make you question the car's quality. The doors and hood are quite heavy.
