2021 Volkswagen Id.4 problems
The Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID.5 are battery electric compact crossover SUVs produced by Volkswagen. Based on the MEB platform, the ID.4 is the second model of the Volkswagen ID. series. The production version of the ID.4 debuted in September 2020 as the first fully-electric crossover SUV under the Volkswagen brand, while the coupe-shaped variant of the ID.4 (akin to the Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron) is marketed as the Volkswagen ID.5 and was revealed in November 2021.
The ID.4 is positioned by Volkswagen as a high-volume, mass-market electric vehicle — a car for "the millions, not the millionaires," as the company claimed in its advertising. It was delivered to European customers from late 2020, and the first quarter of 2021 for the North American market.
The ID.4 was elected World Car of the Year 2021 over runner-ups Honda e and Toyota Yaris.
The vehicle was updated for the 2024 model year; this includes a new, more powerful electric motor.

Common 2021 Volkswagen Id.4 problems
The Volkswagen ID.4, a popular electric vehicle (EV) introduced in 2021, has garnered attention for its cutting-edge technology and sleek design. However, some owners have reported a number of common problems that can affect the overall driving experience. Here are some of the issues that have been reported:
- Active safety systems: Owners of the ID.4's sibling, the ID 3, have reported issues with adaptive cruise control and speed-controlling functions. While the ID 4 hasn't had as many issues in this area, it's worth keeping an eye on any potential problems, as electrical features on early ID cars are prone to bugs and issues.
- Battery management: The ID.4's battery management system has been a subject of concern for some owners, with reports of inaccurate tire pressure readings and issues with charging connectors not unlocking. These problems can affect the overall efficiency and usability of the vehicle.
- Software updates: Volkswagen has acknowledged the need for software improvements in its ID family of electric vehicles, including the ID.4. While updates have been rolled out to address some issues, they often require installation at a dealership, which can be an inconvenience for owners.
- Build quality: Some ID.4 owners have reported issues with the car's build quality, including the use of cheap materials. This can affect the overall durability and perceived value of the vehicle.
- User interface: The ID.4's user interface, particularly the infotainment system, has been criticized for its lack of structure and occasional malfunctions, such as Bluetooth sound control freezing. These issues can affect the overall user experience and make the vehicle more difficult to use.
- Recall: The ID.4 has had one recall for a possible missing bearing bush in the area of the steering worm gear. It is essential to check with your local dealer that this recall has been carried out to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
In summary, while the Volkswagen ID.4 is a cutting-edge electric vehicle with many positive features, it is not immune to common problems. Issues such as engine stalling, infotainment system hiccups, active safety systems, battery management, software updates, build quality, user interface, and recalls have been reported by some owners. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.
Is there a recall on the VW id4 2021?
(Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021-2022 ID. 4 vehicles. The affected vehicles may have been manufactured with door handles that allow water to enter the circuit board assembly, which can cause the doors to open unexpectedly when the vehicle is subject to high lateral forces at speeds below 9 mph/15 kmh.
What is the battery problem on the VW ID 4?
Volkswagen has announced a new recall on the ID. 4 electric crossover due to the risk of a fire caused by the battery—not the high-voltage unit feeding the motors but rather the 12V battery. The good news is that only a small number of units are affected including just over a thousand in the U.S. and 42 in Canada.
How many miles does the Volkswagen ID 4 last?
275 miles
The entry-level Volkswagen ID. 4 comes with a 62-kWH battery that enables your vehicle to travel up to 209 miles on a full charge. What is the problem with the id4 door handle?
This recall, initiated in May 2023, centers around a specific concern with the door handles found in 2021-2022 VW ID. 4 vehicles. It has been discovered that these door handles possess a design flaw that allows water to seep into the circuit board assemblies housed within them.
What are the drawbacks of the Volkswagen ID 4?
The ID. 4's touchscreen interface can be a bit tricky to figure out, and its controls are not particularly intuitive. Even though the ID. 4 added a larger 12.3-inch standard screen for 2023, that didn't fix the problems with the menu structure and layout of the system.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
- VIN: WVGTMPE20MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: Main screen goes blank sometimes when backing up Rear cross traffic warning has jammed on the breaks when nothing is nearby causing a jarring stop, VW has no fix to date and I want to get rid of this unsafe car
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-20
- VIN: WVGDMPE26MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 1. Electronic brake system failure - the vehicle exhibited this issue and so far it appears Volkswagen does not have a resolution. Vehicle has been at the dealership for almost 2 months and they have not been able to fix. Several other reports show that this is a consistent issue with the ID4 (probably the first edition). Fixed are often temporary and the issues resurfaces again 2. Battery Module issue: it appears these vehicles have defective batteries. One module was fixed by Volkswagen - however the capacity only dropped further. I suspect there is a major issue with these batteries and pose a fire hazard (similar to Chevy Bolt) and Volkswagen is intentionally concealing this fact.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
- VIN: WVGUNPE25MP
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: After installing the latest over-the-air software update few days ago, our car began exhibiting a serious braking issue. When coming to a stop, the brakes lock while the vehicle is still in motion, causing a sudden and dramatic jerk forward. This occurs nearly every time we decelerate to a stop, regardless of speed or road conditions. This problem has escalated to the point where we no longer feel safe driving the car, as it poses a risk to the occupants due to its forceful nature
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- VIN: WVGUNPE20MP
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The 12v battery powering the electrical system failed. This caused the vehicle to stop unexpectedly in the middle of a busy street worth traffic on either side of the vehicle. All attempts to restart the vehicle resulted in an error stating the electrical system has failed. The problem was reproduced at the dealership. The techs were unable to diagnose the errors. The manufacturer is sending a District Representative to investigate. The vehicle component was recalled in 2023 and replaced by the dealer to address this specific issue and risk. There were zero warning lights prior to the vehicle stalling. Once stalled, the vehicle was able to start, but unable to drive, and all dashboard warning lights activated.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
- VIN: WVGTMPE27MP
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Over the past month, the car has provided warnings when driving: 1. Front assist has limited availability, 2. ACC unavailable, and 3. Emergency assist is currently not available. Note: the ACC was not engaged when these messages appeared. On October 1 I was driving on a highway at about 65 MPH with adaptive cruise control engaged. The weather was clear. Suddenly the ACC disengaged and the car began to slow. I re-accelerated the car by pushing the accelerator and continued my trip without ACC. No accident occurred but I was surprised when the car began to slow without warning on a major highway at high speed. When it was safe to do so, I pulled over into the breakdown lane to read the messages. The two messages displayed were Front assist has limited availability and Emergency assist currently not available. The picture on the front of the dashboard also indicated that ACC was not available. Over the next few days while driving locally (without ACC engaged), these three messages would periodically appear on the dashboard. I brought the car into a local VW dealer (Wellesley Volkswagen) to have it looked at by the service department. They indicated on the invoice from the visit that they "performed road test. RAND GFF and performed soft configuration of the 5F, front sensor and cluster. Reset all codes with success." The invoice also listed "Concern: 919A vehicle software open. Correction Not available at this time - customer will get notice via mail". I was told by the VW Wellesley representative when I picked up the car that these error messages will likely re-appear until I get the 919A software update, which is not available. These error messages did re-appear yesterday, October 12, while driving locally without ACC engaged. As a side note, I received a recall 919A in the mail from Volkswagen in July 2024 (more than 3 months ago) telling me that a recall repair is not available.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
- VIN: WVGDMPE24MP
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Vehicle starts to accelerate then hesitates for about 5-6 seconds before accelerating again while even keeping pedal down. Has happened on the first drive after multiple dealer visits, I think it’s related to computer resets and the dealer says it’s normal operation of the vehicle recalibrating itself. Problem is it happens when I pull out into traffic and almost causes a wreck.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-07
- VIN: WVGDMPE21MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: when purchased from dealer . was told there were no recalls. Called Volkswagen america. said they would fix soon. no repair aviable. Car is unsafe.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
- VIN: WVGRMPE28MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing a loss of speedometer information, a loss of rearview camera image, and a loss of several communication functions within the vehicle. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-06
- VIN: WVGRMPE27MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The two noted open recalls on my 2021 ID.4 have no fix. There has already been one battery cell replaced and another has gone bad. The vehicles lease ends in two weeks and the dealer, understandably, cannot take it as a trade for another vehicle, sell it to us, or resell it as it will sit on the lot until it is picked up by Volkswagen and totaled out due to it being unsellable. However, Volkswagen has no remedy for the vehicle issues, we are now losing out on any sort of trade in value, and are expected to pay the mileage over the lease agreement for a car that will be scrapped once returned. The dealer can only do so much, but Volkswagen not stepping in to acknowledge the vehicle at this point is a lemon and they do not know how to fix it or others, but expecting us to pay "depreciation" and other fees for a totaled vehicle, totaled due to their issues, is unacceptable. It's one thing for defects, another to not be able to fix them and them dump the cost to the consumer. This vehicle has been a financial burden and for the last few months has been a safety concern, and the final result is we as the consumer have to pay the price for it. Fix your design flaws, take responsibility, or don't sell consumers defective products with no support/solutions and dump costs on them. The fact one open recall means the vehicle could lose all electronics (an electric car) and have no insight into vehicle controls while driving, but we have to pay for the defect upon return is ridiculous. Lemon law will be coming into play here as no solution to the issue or remedy for the costs incurred. Being that this could have caused an accident or otherwise harmed my family or others and again the cost is dumped on us is ridiculous. If the engineers in Germany cannot fix the vehicle and have no solution, take it off the roads and find us a solution, at your cost not ours.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-25
- VIN: WVGTMPE27MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the display screen seized and was displaying a black screen. The contact stated that the rear passenger's door handle failed to unlock and open the door. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (Structure) and 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: WVGDMPE24MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I leased a car three years ago. This ID4 on May 15,2023 left me at a full stop in the middle of the highway. I then dropped it off to the dealer where they inspected it and saw it was a sensor/software issue, I think. They never actually disclosed the problem, nor held accountability. They insured me after almost two weeks of having to pay gas for a loaner car that they had fixed it and it was safe. After that incident and before my car had been in service countless times, all very inconvenient but not immediate safety issues, until the door handles. The door handles have been recalled twice before this last incident. My car was in there for over two weeks again back and forth. They broke my actual handles and had to go back in again, they claimed they were fixed. Now, almost 6monthankater I go to buy this lemon pre certified through the dealer and they tell me they can’t because it has two open recalls. They failed to say that the open recalls have been since May and are only now informing id4 owners that their doors may unlatch any any moment while driving and kill your babies and someone else’s on the road. Yet, they want me to either extend my lease, turn in the car and pay over mileage (even though I thought I was leasing to buy) or buy out the car not certified through a third party with two open recalls. I am being bullied into keeping a lemon. This car is a lemon and I want Volkswagen to take it off my hands waiving any over mileage and either giving me a new id4 that is safe or my 21,000 dollars I have paid into it. I am not the only one legally bound to these lemons. I demand a resolution for my consumer rights. I will speak to every news station out there until I seek justice for me and so many others.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
- VIN: WVGKMPE23MP
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Vehicle had a complete failure due to electrical issues and was brought to dealership. It was apparently due to recall issues which were repaired. The vehicle was returned 2 weeks ago. Today, shortly after exiting a highway, while traveling approx. 15-20mph then vehicle completely shut down. It stopped suddenly and unexpectedly and went into neutral. I could not put the car back into drive or park. The dash indicated electrical issues, airbag issues, collision sensors, brake issues and said “vehicle must not be towed”. Vehicle is currently at dealership.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
- VIN: WVGJNPE20MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the center display failed to turn on. The contact stated while reversing at 5MPH, the rearview camera failed to engage, causing the rear vehicle panel to strike a tree and to become bent. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the failure was related to the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
- VIN: WVGTMPE26MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: On multiple occasions this vehicle has failed to operate, a red hazard light goes on along with many other failure light indicators. I've been stranded where the car does nothing and also experienced the car dying while driving. When the vehicle comes to the airbag indicators come on warning that the airbags are not functioning. I have had to drive the vehicle this way. It's not the first time this car has had some type of electrical problems. It previously had an above lighting issue that had to be repaired. It's currently at Volkswagen of Leesburg in Florida, they are trying to figure out what is wrong with this car because they have not seen this type of failure before. It's been there for a week now. After getting stranded, vehicle failures, and electrical failures, I no longer feel safe in this vehicle. Im afraid this vehicle could have an electrical problem or fail while driving leaving me vulnerable to incoming traffic.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
- VIN: WVGUNPE29MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: This problem is very intermittent but also very dangerous. It's happened to me three times in the last month. All three times, while I was making a left hand turn, the accelerator stopped working. One time, I was making a left turn in front of 45 MPH oncoming traffic. My left turn was legal as I had plenty of room to complete my turn before the oncoming traffic arrived. My car started the turn then stopped when my car had turned to the left but was in the middle of the intersection with the right side of my car facing the oncoming traffic. I took my foot off the accelerator then pressed down on it again and the car moved forward and out of the intersection which saved me from an accident. The other two times, I didn't come close to an accident but as I was about to accelerate, nothing happened and I had to take my foot off the accelerator and then press down on it again for my car to move. Had there been cars coming from my right, I could have been in a collision. I took my car to the local VW dealer who said they haven't heard of this problem and will run diagnostics. I doubt the diagnostics will find a problem that only occurs a few times a month. I did a search on the internet and found a site where multiple VW ID.4 owners were complaining about this same problem. Some had the issue turning right, not left. I'll attach the document that shows the other complaints as well as the web site link.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-18
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WVGGNPE23MP
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I had backed in to a parking space in a parking lot. To exit, I shifted the car into Drive, gently touched the accelerator (which should have accelerated the car to 2 MPH) and turned the steering wheel about 90° clockwise with my left hand to straighten the wheels. In doing so, the base of my left thumb inadvertently pushed the Set button on the cruise control, causing it to set to 15 MPH, its minimum setting, and the car to rapidly accelerate. I jammed on the breaks but wasn’t able to stop in time to avoid colliding into the side of a passing car. Because my right knee was locked in my effort to stop my car, the force of the impact was transferred to my hip and, though nothing was broken, I ended up spending two days in the observation unit of my hospital followed by eight days in residential rehabilitation. At the time, I had no idea what had caused the car to suddenly accelerate, seemingly without any input and certainly without my intent. It wasn’t until several months later that a similar acceleration event occurred, fortunately not resulting in an accident, and I was able to determine the cause. This problem is not the result of defective parts but of design. I believe the cruise Set button should not be located so close to the steering wheel rim and should not be raised as it is, but the safety issue could also be resolved in software by not allowing the cruise control to engage at very low speeds.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-08
- VIN: WVGKMPE20MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: VW still has not remedied the rebooting screens issue from their May recall. If the main driver information screen shuts off, cruise control and lane keep also shut off, which means the vehicle slows down and will not continue following the lane, resulting in the vehicle possibly being put in a dangerous situation.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
- VIN: WVGUNPE24MP
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When accelerating from stop the vehicle loses power. If the accelerator is depressed further the power does not return. However, when the accelerator is released then depressed again power returns. In our case this has happened seven (7) times. The occurrence is random and is not limited to a specific location. It has occurred on the interstate highway when approaching the traffic on an onramp as well as in town driving. On two (20 of the seven (7) occasions automobiles following have had to emergency brake to prevent a rear end collision. Losing power when merging into traffic on an interstate could pose significant safety hazards to oncoming traffic as well as the vehicle merging. The problem has been brought to the dealer's attention but they have not been able to reproduce it. It has not been inspected by police or insurance because accidents have been avoided. I have owned the car for 14 months and the occurrence is random.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
- VIN: WVGDMPE20MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: My car's display screen which shows the speed has now malfunctioned twice while driving and today while reversing the car, the center screen displaying the rear camera also reset mid-driving. In both cases, I turned off the car waited a few minutes, restarted the car twice and then the display came back on but who knows when the display will crash again. I have reported this issue to VW and to a local dealership, this issue is associated with a current active safety recall on the vehicle for which VW has no remedy. This has been the status quo for over 3 months. I wonder if actual accidents have to take place and people have to die before NHITSA will issue a vehicle recall for my model of ID.4 as I am genuinely scared to use my vehicle anymore and VW HAS NO IDEA WHEN IT WILL RELEASE OR DEVELOP A REMEDY. Hence I request you to please use your powers to urge the manufacturer to issue a vehicle recall as the current issue poses a MAJOR risk for drivers and other cars on the road. Please don't ignore this request as this could be quiet dangerous.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
- VIN: WVGDMPE21MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy the safety recall for my vehicle in a timely manner. It has currently been in there possession for over 30 days with multiple failed attempts to correct the recall/issue with my vehicle.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
- VIN: WVGTMPE23MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Our 2021 vw id4 has serious issues. It’s still getting addressed at the dealership and has been there since Tuesday. I had to have my husband come and pick me up because the car itself had indicated it was unsafe to drive. Please contact Jacksonville Nc Vw for our carfax report. I have detailed photos of the incident. We have purchased a second car partially bc of how many times we’ve had to leave this one for extended periods of time. This car is 3 years old. I took the car on a short trip. A minor alert started. When I went to park the car flashed through multiple alerts and started an (artificial) engine noise revving. It specifically told me to stop driving it.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-15
- VIN: WVGKMPE25MP
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: We have owned the ID.4 for there years and have had to put up with many recall issues that seam to take years in order to be resolved, it took VW over a year to resolve the random door opening issues, the car still sends messages the it is opening and closing the doors indiscriminately (at any time of the night or day). Now the infotainment screen started showing multiple errors, apple CarPlay works whenever it wants, on whatever phone it chooses, the screen goes blank frequently on its own, maps and car's GPS is useless, child lock errors, range calculations are erratic making it difficult to plan to trips. The over the air updates have seam to make the problem worse. Now we are waiting for another over the air update, the roll out has been extremely slow. Again it been three years and still no resolutions. We paid good money for this car, we were never late on a single payment. VW brought this vehicle to market without being properly tested, we have been paying money to Beta test a car for them and they have been allowed to slow walk repairs. The dealers cannot offer any solutions because VW of North America does not have any permanent solutions. The only solutions offered is trade in your car and we will sell you another car with less problems, of course if you trade in the car you loose thousand of dollars, if you sell the car you loose thousands of dollars, if you keep the car you have to deal with a Defective Vehicale and continue paying for it. How can this be allowed to continue. We need Help.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
- VIN: WVGTMPE23MP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: This car has had open recalls for over a year. No dealers in the area have been able to fix them. They claim Volkswagen cannot get them parts on time. They’ve cancelled my service appointments multiple times. The car is now completely dead after a series of electrical faults and I’m unable to get in the car at all. What if my daughter was in her car seat and I was unable to get into it?! The amount of issues I’ve had with this car is insane. Constant faults including “child safety lock” not working. This is 2021 leased brand new. The recalls started over a year ago and I haven’t been able to get them fixed. Isn’t there someone sort of SLA for when a recall needs to be repaired?
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
- VIN: WVGJNPE20MP
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Vehicle suffers from unintended and sudden acceleration when the "resume' capacitive touch button is accidentally brushed against. The vehicle is subject to injure or kill the vehicles occupants or others struck by the vehicle. Vehicle advised there is "no issue" with the vehicle but they did acknowledge the problem with the design of the steering wheel. The issue is intermittent and has occurred while driving at slow speeds in parking lots when the steering wheel is frequently turned more than 90 degrees and a body part can unintentionally touch the 'Resume" button.

This car is amazing! It's roomy, quiet, and comfortable, with good power and smooth driving. The tight turning radius is especially helpful in city driving. Plus, it looks like a normal, nice SUV, but the spaceship sound at low speed lets people know it's electric! Charging at home to 80% on most nights is very convenient, and using the free Electrify America fast chargers for an extra 30-50% occasionally is a great perk. Even with 112,000 miles, I still love this car. There have been no problems, and a software update even improved the infotainment screen function. The battery has not degraded much either. When it was new, the 80% range showed about 225 miles, and now it shows about 215 miles. The Electrify America charging stations are more crowded now, but waiting 5 to 20 minutes is common. Overall, this car is a fantastic choice!

August 4, 2023: Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the ID4. While we were initially excited about our first EV, we did encounter some issues along the way. The infotainment system was a bit sluggish and we had some trouble with the voice commands. Additionally, we experienced some issues with the cruise control and the car shutting down unexpectedly. Despite these challenges, we were able to get the necessary recalls completed and ultimately decided to trade in the vehicle. While we did lose some money in the process, we ultimately found a great replacement in the 1st edition ID4. We've always been fans of VW and appreciate their focus on driver experience and affordable tech. The ID4 feels like a luxury vehicle and we're thrilled with our decision to lease it. Thanks for listening! The seats are incredibly comfortable, making our 365-mile highway drive from the dealer a breeze. We found the car to be very quiet, adequately powerful, and fun to drive. The safety and tech features are top-notch, and we were pleasantly surprised by the Electrify America stations, despite our initial range anxiety. Their support line was amazing, with a human answering the call within 1-2 minutes. We made it home with no worries and are already planning our next mini road trip. The front windshield visibility is superb, and the panoramic moonroof (viewing only, no open) is amazing. The storage for drinks is great, and the flexibility of moving storage holders for big cups is a plus. The wireless charging and USB-C plugs are convenient, and the motorized trunk opening/closing is a nice touch. This vehicle feels like the next generation, but it's still enough like a regular crossover SUV that it's not a drastic change. I don't want to attract too much attention personally. My only minor complaint so far is that the infotainment system seems to have too many options. I also personally prefer traditional buttons and knobs for climate control/radio, but we will get used to it. It's a minor complaint, and overall, this feels like a high-end affordable electric vehicle. We are optimistic that charging infrastructure will continue to improve in Texas. For now, it covers our most travelled routes, such as El Paso, Midland, DFW, San Antonio, and Austin. I highly recommend this vehicle.

This is a state of the art car! It sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun exploring all the technology it has to offer. The ride is so smooth and stable, which makes me feel safe and secure. I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your purchase, even though it was quite pricey.

We purchased the 2021 ID.4 Pro S RWD and have already driven 40k miles on it. We have only had to deal with two flat tires, but other than that, there have been no maintenance costs. The car is surprisingly quiet and rides smoothly, with decent acceleration. The turning circle is very tight, even better than some subcompacts! My wife was particularly impressed with the seats, which have adjustable lumbar support and even a massage feature. While some reviewers have complained about the software, we have not had any major issues with it. It is true that the VW navigation is not the strongest and the VW voice recognition could be improved, but we use Android Auto & Google Maps, so it doesn't really matter. Additionally, the travel assist is very relaxing, with Lane centering and adaptive cruise control. Overall, we absolutely love our car!

Hi there! I wanted to share with you this beautiful piece of art.

In April 2021, my husband and I test-drove five electric cars. While he opted for a Tesla Model 3, I preferred the ID.4 since it had real buttons and felt more like a traditional car. We ordered both cars on the same day. He received his Tesla two months later, and when my old car started breaking down, I drove the Tesla quite a bit and got used to it. My ID.4 (AWD Pro-S) arrived exactly one year after I ordered it. It's a beautiful car (I got the red), and I receive many compliments on it. It seems very well-built both outside and inside. However, I have been experiencing some issues while driving it. Firstly, the software is super buggy and slow to respond. It seems like it is based on CPU technology from a couple of decades ago. If I tap something, there is a lag of a second or two, and I'm never sure if my tap was registered. Secondly, I cannot listen to audio via AirPlay from my iPhone. It works for a while, but then starts cutting out or stops altogether. I brought it to VW service, and they said that it overwhelms the infotainment system, so their solution was to disable the onscreen map. That didn't fix it, so now I not only cannot listen to my podcasts, but I don't have the map either. Thirdly, the voice command feature is not very reliable. Even simple three-word requests aren't recognized. Fourthly, driving is laggy. If I press on the accelerator, there's maybe a half-second delay. Lastly, there is no one-pedal driving. Despite these issues, I'm hopeful that VW will address them soon.Once you get used to one-pedal driving, you'll never want to go back. With the Tesla, regenerative braking is strong and taking your feet off both pedals brings the car to a complete stop. It's such a natural way to drive! Although the ID.4 does have regenerative braking, it is comparatively weak and requires frequent use of the brakes (with associated brake pad wear). Most irritatingly, taking your feet off both pedals causes the car to creep forward. However, it's important to note that the 2022 models do allow this feature to be turned off, which is a step in the right direction. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that the ID.4 comes with a trailer hitch receiver, which can be used to install a fold-up bike rack. While the rack may obscure a bit of the back-up camera, there are ways to work around this issue. Lastly, while road trip charging on the Electrify America network can be a bit of a chore, it's worth noting that the ID.4 comes with free charging for three years. Overall, the ID.4 is a great car with some minor quirks that can be easily worked around.Yay! Unfortunately, the car cannot tell you where the chargers are. However, I found a helpful app that does the job for me. I can also estimate whether I have the range to make it to the next charger. While Tesla may be ahead in this area, I'm still enjoying my ID.4. I'm looking forward to future updates that will resolve any software issues and improve the driving experience. While there may be other solid alternatives out there, I believe the ID.4 has great potential. I hope that VW continues to embrace the new EV paradigm and make improvements to their vehicles.

I have experience with the ID 4 as a company car in Sweden and unfortunately, it has been the most unpleasant car experience of my life. The user interface is seriously flawed and it is just mind-boggling how VW, one of the world's biggest car makers, could launch something so expensive and still so horribly bad! The infotainment system totally lacks structure, making it a nightmare to use. The inner lighting is also a joke, and the motion sensor on/off is just totally senile. Maneuvering the windows and mirrors is also quite difficult. However, the Lane Assist system is the most dangerous feature of all. It tries to keep you

It's great that VW is making an effort to produce an electric car, but there is definitely room for improvement. The electronics are decent, but the delayed charging could use some work as it is not consistent. The app is basic and could benefit from more features. Compared to similar cars, Hyundai seems to have better features. However, one plus point for the VW is the tax credit. It's worth noting that VW recommends charging up to 80% rather than 100%, which does limit the range but can help with usage in the long run.

As an experienced owner of several EV's and EV Hybrids, I can confidently say that the ID 4 is a decent EV. However, there are some areas that require improvement, such as the software. The touch screen can be glitchy and delayed at times, and the MyVW app is not up to par. Additionally, the estimated range is not always accurate, with a 10-15% discrepancy. On the positive side, the SUV offers ample space and the acceleration is satisfactory. While I purchased the ID 4 in Aug 2022 after a year-long wait, I am not entirely convinced that I would purchase another one based on my initial experience.

After only 7300 miles, my 2021 ID4 experienced a major engine failure that affected several other systems, including braking, steering, driver assist, hill holding, and even the proximity noise electric cars make. Despite the inconvenience, I am pleased to report that VW promptly replaced the motor and ultimately agreed to buy back the car after 5 months. While VW offered me extra cash to purchase another VW, I have decided not to take the risk based on my 13-month experience with this car. It is important to note that the infotainment system can be confusing, and the climate control and radio controls are difficult to see in the dark. Additionally, the line of sight when making left turns is poor. In my opinion, the VW ID4 still requires further improvements before it is ready for the marketplace.
