The Mazda Tribute (Japanese: マツダ・トリビュート, Matsuda Toribyūto) (Code J14) is a compact SUV made by Japanese automaker Mazda from 2000 to 2011. It was jointly developed with Ford Motor Company and based on the front-wheel drive Mazda 626 platform, which was in turn the basis for the similar Ford Escape on the CD2 platform. The Tribute was priced below the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner in Ford's CD2 SUV lineup.

The Tribute and Escape debuted in 2000, offering front- or all-wheel drive and a choice of a transversely mounted 2.0 L Ford Zetec 4-cylinder engine or 3.0 L Ford Duratec V6. The Ford Escape was also sold as the Ford Maverick in Europe with a Ford 2.0 L I4 Zeta engine with manual transmission, or 3.0 L Duratec coupled to automatic transmission.

One main difference between the Tribute and the Ford Escape/Maverick is that the Tribute's suspension is tuned for a firmer ride than the Escape/Maverick, in order to correspond with Mazda's sporty image. As Mazda had offered "spiced up" models in other segments such as the Mazda3 and CX-7, the utilitarian Tribute was replaced by the more aggressively styled and in-house-designed Mazda CX-5 in North America.

THE LOCAL DEALER (OAK LAWN MAZDA, 6750 95TH ST, OAK LAWN, IL, 60453) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN VERY SLOWLY TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUBFRAME HAD FRACTURED. A REMEDY WAS NOT PROVIDED DUE TO THE DEALER AWAITING A RESPONSE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR COST BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS REMEDIED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V174000 (STRUCTURE) ON JULY 11, 2014, AND THE CROSS BRACE (BRACKET) WAS REINFORCED AT THAT TIME. THE REMEDY FAILED TO RECTIFY THE FAILURE. A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL WELL REVEALED THAT THE TOP OF THE STRUT, ALONG WITH A PORTION OF THE METAL MOUNT WAS BROKEN AWAY FROM THE BODY. THE MOUNT HAD COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY FROM THE WHEEL WELL EXPOSING THE INTERIOR OF THE CARGO AREA. MOST OF MY DRIVING IS DONE EITHER IN TOWN OR HIGHWAY. IT IS VERY DISAPPOINTING THAT MAZDA (AND FORD) HAS FAILED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS POOR ENGINEERING. I HOPE IT DOESN'T TAKE A FATALITY OR INJURY FOR EITHER THE MANUFACTURER OR THE GOVERNMENT TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE.

  • Summary: MY 2004 MAZDA TRIBUTE (JUST LIKE A FORD ESCAPE) HAS TOTALLY RUSTED OUT ON THE PASSENGER BACK WHEEL WELL.MY HUSBAND WAS DOING ABOUT 20 MPH AND HEARD THE LOUD BANG! THE SHOCK MOUNTING IS COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY AND BANGS AGAINST THE CAR AND PROVIDES NO STABILIZING CONTROL. I FOUND A BUNCH OF COMPLAINTS AFTER I GOOGLED IT - ALL RIGHT REAR! THE FRONT WAS RECALLED BUT WHY NOT REAR? OUR MECHANIC SAID IT WAS BASICALLY TOTALED. AND GOOD LUCK TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE TO FIX IT! IT CAN NOT BE DRIVEN AT ALL! CANT SELL IT OR TRADE IT IN! AND WE CANT FIND ANYONE TO TOUCH IT! MAZDA'S RESPONSE WAS THEY CAN HOOK US UP WITH A SALESMAN TO PURCHASE ANOTHER MAZDA. REALLY?????????????

2004 Mazda Tribute recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2004 Mazda Tribute.

2015-06-03
  • Manufacturer: Timken Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
  • Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
  • Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Tribute vehicles manufactured May 22, 2000, through December 19, 2003, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm.
  • Consequence: A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. The recall began on May 29, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 7514D.

  • Manufacturer: MAZDA NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: Mazda is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2006, and 2008, Tribute vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
  • Consequence: A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. Remedy parts are now available. The safety recall began on September 13, 2012. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500, option #6.

  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ANTILOCK BRAKES (ABS), THE ABS MODULE CONNECTOR MAY HAVE MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS. THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW CONTAMINATION TO ENTER THE MODULE CONNECTOR, CREATING A POTENTIAL FOR AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.
  • Consequence: AN ELECTRICAL SHORT MIGHT CAUSE AN ABS MALFUNCTION THAT WOULD ILLUMINATE THE ABS WARNING LIGHT, AND IN SOME CASES, THE MODULE MAY OVERHEAT RESULTING IN BURNING ODOR, SMOKE, AND/OR FIRE. THIS CONDITION COULD OCCUR EITHER WHEN THE VEHICLE IGNITION SWITCH IS IN THE OFF POSITION OR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE ABS MODULE FOR MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS, AND REPAIR OR REPLACE THE HARNESS CONNECTOR AS APPROPRIATE. THE DEALER WILL ALSO INSPECT THE CONNECTOR ON THE ABS MODULE AND REPLACE IT IF IT IS FOUND TO BE CORRODED OR DAMAGED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 9, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MAZDA AT 1-800-222-5500.

  • Summary: CERTAIN CARDONE MASTER CYLINDERS WITH PART NUMBERS 10-2925, 10-2987, 10-2987MZA, 10-3083, 11-3015, 11-3042, 11-3044, 11-3045, 11-3047, 11-3064, AND 11-3156, AND WITH DATE CODES LOWER THAN DCA7078 SOLD AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR USE ON THE VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE SEAL ON MASTER CYLINDER CAN FAIL AND LEAK BRAKE FLUID.
  • Consequence: LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID CAN RESULT IN POOR BRAKING PERFORMANCE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

  • Summary: CERTAIN 2004-2005 SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND CERTAIN 2001-2003 SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE HAVING REAR LIFTGATE COMPONENTS SERVICED WITH 2004 EQUIVALENT COMPONENTS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 206, 'DOOR LOCKS AND DOOR RETENTION COMPONENTS.' THE REAR LIFTGATE LATCHING SYSTEM DOES NOT MEET THE INERTIA LOAD REQUIREMENT IN ONE DIRECTION.
  • Consequence: IF THE LIFTGATE IS LEFT UNLOCKED, THERE IS THE POTENTIAL THAT IT MAY OPEN DURING A CRASH.

    I have owned two Mazdas, including this one for almost three years, and have unfortunately experienced numerous issues since the day of purchase. Despite countless services, I have had to replace all four tires, deal with leaks from the body, and contend with intermittent issues with the sunroof and electric seats. The latest problem is a concerning noise from the power steering when the car is cold. While I appreciate the ride and comfort of the car, these issues have eroded my trust in its reliability.

    I am writing my second review of this car, having left my last one over a year ago. While I initially thought highly of it, I have since experienced a number of issues. The stereo has required multiple replacements, the passenger airbag cover keeps popping off, the door seals are coming loose, and the wheels frequently become misaligned despite my mostly highway driving. Despite these issues, I have found the car enjoyable to drive and well-suited for out of town trips. However, I have had to persistently advocate for myself with my Waco TX Mazda dealership to get these issues addressed. Overall, I remain confident in my assessment of the car's performance and my ability to navigate any challenges that may arise.

    My car is less than a year old, but I have experienced several issues. The doors have a tendency to open on their own and sometimes lock me in, forcing me to crawl through another door. Additionally, the car has accelerated on its own while in cruise control. I have also noticed that the doors are not sealed properly and the tires are going flat due to incorrect balancing, which unfortunately cannot be fixed. While I am aware of two other individuals who have experienced similar issues, I am confident that these problems can be resolved with the right attention and expertise.
