The Audi Q8 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV coupé made by Audi that was launched in 2018. It is the flagship of the Audi SUV line, and is being produced at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant.

Overview

BMW launched its coupe SUV in 2008, the BMW X6, and Mercedes-Benz followed suit in 2015 with the GLE-Class Coupe. Audi never made a direct competitor but had been planning to once the new body style became a sales success for other brands.

The Q8 is the first SUV model under Audi's new head of design, Marc Lichte, and introduced a new design language for the brand's SUVs. The grill is larger and now has an octagonal shape, with both vertical and horizontal slats. The Q8 features full-laser headlamps and taillamps. The interior features the knob-less MMI system, three touch screens, and an enlarged virtual cockpit which has a fully digital instrument cluster. Additionally, both haptic and acoustic feedback are provided in response to user inputs, although the design can still lead to distracted driving.

The Q8 is slightly shorter than the Q7 in terms of both length and height but is slightly wider. It also has less cargo space than the Q7 due to its sloped roofline, and unlike the Q7, the Q8 is not available with third-row seats. According to the Volkswagen Group's product strategy the Audi Q8 shares its platform with the Lamborghini Urus, among other products.

Common 2024 Audi Q8 problems

The Audi Q8, a luxury midsize SUV, is known for its sharp design and advanced features. However, like any vehicle, it has some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most frequently mentioned issues is throttle lag, which can be especially unnerving when trying to accelerate quickly or get out in front of other cars. This issue has been reported in the 2019 model, and it is unclear whether Audi has addressed it in newer models. Some owners have installed pedal commander devices to improve throttle response, but it is not clear if this has eliminated or improved the problem.

Another issue that some owners have reported is a lack of attention to detail and human engineering in the Q8's design. For example, the Q7 had a small red LED on the interval wipe switch for the rear wiper, which indicated when the rear interval wiper was energized. This feature is missing in the Q8, as are sensors in the door pockets that cause a small white LED light to illuminate as you open them. These may seem like small issues, but they can affect the overall driving experience and the perception of quality.

In addition to these specific issues, the Audi Q8 is expected to have about average reliability when compared to other new cars. Consumer Reports bases this prediction on similar models and the Audi brand scores. However, it is important to note that the reliability data is based on a questionnaire sent to subscribers, and the sample size may not be large enough to provide results of statistical confidence for some model years.

Overall, while the Audi Q8 is a popular and well-regarded luxury midsize SUV, it is not without its common problems. Throttle lag and a lack of attention to detail in the design are two issues that some owners have reported. However, the Q8 is expected to have about average reliability, and it remains a popular choice in its class.

Negative 2024 Audi Q8 car reviews

  1. Nathen Kertzmann 2025-01-06

The SUV is beautiful inside and out. Once you get rolling, the drive is wonderful! It could benefit from a little more power and torque, perhaps an additional 30 horsepower. However, there are a few issues that could be improved. The turbo response time could be quicker, and the oil-overfilled warning light has a faulty system design, which Audi has acknowledged in a TSB but has yet to provide a fix. Additionally, the auto stop & start feature cuts off a bit too quickly while still rolling, causing a rough start-up and exacerbating the turbo lag.

  2. William Green 2024-09-22

Make sure you are aware of a fault light that may continue to come on and stay on. This is a warning light indicating that your oil level is too high and instructing you to release some oil from the oil chamber. According to an Audi specialist, this is a recent issue that Audi is acknowledging in some of their newer model cars. If you don't drive the car far enough, moisture builds up in the oil chamber, triggering the 'overfill' sensors and turning on a false warning light. However, the engine is never in danger of oil spilling and causing any sort of damage. The specialist is hopeful that Audi Motors will fix the problem. The car is very nice, but has a weak launch at the start.

Hey there! This computer is quite big, isn't it? It seems to have a mind of its own and never does the same thing twice. Personally, I just want to drive without having to worry about programming it.

Hey there! Just a quick reminder to take your time. Remember, things aren't always as difficult as they may seem at first glance.

Positive 2024 Audi Q8 car reviews

  1. Godfrey Crist 2025-01-08

I've only had the car for a week, but so far it has exceeded all my expectations. It's exceptionally smooth, quiet, and comfortable on the road. The technology is cutting edge and the looks are outstanding. The Prestige model is rich with features. After owning the vehicle for about 6 months, I can say that I still like it as much as I did during my first days of ownership. People often stop me and say how good looking it is. I did have a couple of minor quality control build issues, but they were easily resolved by the dealer. If I were to list any complaints, I would say I have only two minor ones. Firstly, there is a definite lack of small storage spaces for the driver (i.e. center console and dashboard cubbies). Secondly, the engine stop/start feature is annoying, but it can be defeated. I would definitely buy this car again. The only thing I would change would be to get the 4 wheel steering option. This, I believe, would make parking and general maneuverability much easier. In January 2020, I traded my Q8 for an identical Q8, the only difference being that the new one has 4 wheel steering and air suspension. Other than that, there are NO differences in model or options. My previous opinion that 4 wheel steering would improve maneuverability was absolutely correct! The new car is significantly more maneuverable and MUCH easier to park. Now, having had the Q8 for over two years, I can say that it has been trouble-free and a pleasure to drive. Not being a computer geek, I still find some functions somewhat difficult to navigate, but I'm getting better at it. Having a couple of buttons/knobs for a couple of more commonly used functions would be nice. However, if you remember to use the voice function, which works very well, it's a good alternative.

  2. Jayde Quigley 2024-11-10

The Audi Q8 is a terrific car. It handles beautifully, has enough power, and provides a smooth ride.

  3. Adolph Jacobi 2024-10-23

I am thoroughly impressed with my Q8 Prestige model, equipped with all the latest technology assists. While using cruise control, I have noticed that the lane assist feature can still have some influence on the car's steering, even after being switched off. However, this is a minor issue and does not detract from the overall excellence of the vehicle.

  4. Tavares Kunze 2024-10-22

I'm so glad you love this car! To get the most out of it, it's important to outfit it with all the features you desire. I had the chance to drive a loaner Q8 premium and was amazed at how different it felt without the Prestige, Luxury package, adjustable suspension, premium stereo, 4 wheel steering, and S line packages. So, if you want the full experience, it's definitely worth going big. Otherwise, you might want to consider the Q4 e tron.
