1997 Toyota T100 problems

toyota logo

The Toyota T100 is a full-size pickup truck produced by Toyota between 1992 and 1998. It was developed strictly for the US (and Canadian) markets, where larger pickups have a sizable market share.

History

As Toyota firmly established itself in the North American compact pickup truck market in the 1980s through 1990s, the company offered a truck that was larger than the compact as an alternative to the traditional North American full-size pickup truck market. North American Toyota dealers had long been clamoring for a full-sized Toyota truck, especially in light of the high percentage of Toyota Pickup owners who moved on to domestic full-sized trucks. The T100 reflected a philosophy of designing products specifically for localized international markets, where traditional products sold and made in Japan wouldn't sell well. This approach is also demonstrated with the introduction of the mid-size Toyota Camry (XV10) which was larger than the compact Toyota Camry (V30) in 1991, and again in 1997 when the Toyota Sienna replaced the slow selling Toyota Previa.

Rumored for many years before, the 1993 Toyota T100 boasted a full-size (8 ft) pickup bed but retained the engine and suspension setup of its smaller and older sibling, the compact Toyota Truck. Although the T100 was a bit larger than the competitive mid-size Dodge Dakota, it was still markedly smaller than full-size American pickup trucks of the time. This meant that the T100 occupied its own niche in the truck market. Before introducing the T100, the company reflected on its history of commercial truck manufacture and products they offered in the past. Past products started with the Toyota G1, the Toyota FA, the Toyota BX, the Toyota Stout, the Toyota ToyoAce, and the Toyota Dyna, and its market successes with their Hino Division. Though economical, reliable, and practical, the T100 was slow to be accepted by traditional buyers of full-size competitors, while it was larger than both the Toyota Truck followed by the Toyota Tacoma compact trucks. Wary of the market pushback of competing directly with the Big Three, Toyota chose this somewhat smaller size (and limited lineup) so as not to risk blowback and import quotas. The T100 was designed and engineered for the North American market and was not sold in Japan.

Although sales were slow at the start, the T100 sales did reach into the mid 40,000 vehicles sold range (1996) in the United States. Sales of the Chevrolet C/K were roughly 700,000 per year, while sales of the Ford F-Series surged from 550,000 to nearly 850,000 and Dodge from 100,000 to 400,000 with the introduction of the new Dodge Ram in 1993. Sales of the T100 fell approximately 30 percent when the new Ram went on the market in October 1993, 11 months after the T100's launch in November 1992.

Common 1997 Toyota T100 problems

The Toyota T100, produced from 1993 to 1998, was known for its refinement and superior interior quality compared to other pickups of the time. However, several common problems were reported by owners, which include:

  • Clutch bracket issues on 5-speed models: The factory clutch bracket on 5-speed T100 models is reportedly weak and prone to flexing, causing the bracket and firewall to crack. This issue is often indicated by a popping sound when the clutch is depressed. A stronger replacement part is available for approximately $70.
  • Transmission problems: Some T100 owners have reported transmission issues, such as locking into 5th gear, which may require costly repairs. Regular servicing of the 5-speed transmission is recommended to prevent such problems.
  • Front brake pad wear: The front brake pads on the T100 are reported to wear quickly, potentially due to the use of cheap parts. Frequent replacement may be necessary.
  • Starter problems: Some T100 owners have experienced issues with the starter, including instances where it continues to run for a minute or more after the engine has started, potentially causing damage to the cables. Replacing the starter may be necessary to address this issue.
  • Engine downgrade: In an effort to reduce costs, Toyota downgraded the T100's standard engine to a 2.7-litre inline-4, which was considered less powerful than the previous 3.4-litre V6.

Despite these issues, many T100 owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle, praising its reliability, dependability, and fuel efficiency, particularly with the 3.4-litre V6 engine.

Why did the Toyota T100 fail?

But, in typical Toyota fashion, the company decided that truck buyers didn't need a V-8 or massive bulk. So the Japanese automaker combined a full-size eight-foot bed with a smaller cab and V-6 engine to achieve better fuel economy. American truck buyers of the 1990s weren't having it. The T100 was shunned.

How many miles will a Toyota T100 last?

The 3.4L is a good motor but you must do preventive maintenance on valve cover gaskets and timing belt. These motors will easily get 250K+ miles if this is done.

Why did Toyota stop making the T100?

In theory, a full-size pickup truck from Toyota in the early-1990s sounded like a recipe for success. However, in practice the T100 was a commercial failure, never selling more than 40,000 units in a single year when some Big Three competitors were selling upwards of 700,000.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-05-16
  • VIN: JT4UN22D1V0
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I HAVE READ SEVERAL OF THE DESCRIPTIONS ON THE SITE AND AM AFRAID I'M DRIVING AN UNSAFE VEHICLE NOW BECAUSE OF THE UNDERLYING RUST ISSUES WHICH COULD BE AT THE ROOT OF SHIFTER ISSUES, AS IN A PREVIOUS COMPLAINT AND THE DANGEROUS FRAME RUST ISSUE. I AM NOT A MECHANIC, BUT I RECOGNIZE MANY OF THE RUST ISSUES DESCRIBED HERE ON MY T100. NHTSA SHOULD RE-EXAMINE THE DECISION TO GIVE TOYOTA A BREAK BY NOT REQUIRING THAT THEY BUY BACK VEHICLES AS DONE WITH SIMILAR MODELS IN THEIR FAMILY WITH THE FRAME RUST ISSUES. THE ALLOWANCE TO CONTINUE T100S BE DRIVEN PUTS PASSENGERS AND OTHER MOTORISTS AT RISK. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED, AND THE MECHANICALS AND APPEARANCE BELIES THE SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUES BENEATH.THE NHTSA IS REMISS TO NOT PUT PRESSURE ON TOYOTA TO INCLUDE THESE VEHICLES IN THEIR RECALL AS A GOOD FAITH AND SAFETY MEASURE... AS THE OWNER OF NEWER, ALLEGEDLY SAFE, TOYOTA PRODUCTS, I AM ALSO CONCERNED BY THEIR LACK OF RESPONSE... DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO LOSE THEIR LIFE BEFORE A SUITABLE RESPONSE IS MANDATED? AFTER ALL, THIS VEHICLE COULD BE BEHIND YOU ON THE DRIVE HOME TONIGHT. THIS IGNORES HOW THIS VEHICLE WOULD LIKELY JUST CRUMBLE IN AN ACCIDENT. I PLAN TO BRING THIS VEHICLE IN FOR A COMPREHENSIVE CHECK NOW, BUT IN THE INTERIM, WORRY ABOUT ITS SAFE USE. THE FACT THAT MY KIDS ARE EVEN NEAR IT WHEN IT IS PARKED GIVES ME PAUSE NOW. PLEASE USE YOU INFLUENCE TO IMPRESS UPON TOYOTA THAT WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS IS RIGHT FOR THEM. THANKS FOR READING MY THOUGHTS AND FOR YOU CONSIDERATION IN WORKING TOWARDS A RESOLUTION. *TR

THE TRUCK NOW HAS 65,000 MILES ON IT. I PURCHASED IT FROM A DEALER IN PENNSYLVANIA. I THINK TOYOTA SHOULD HONOR THEIR COMMITMENT TO T-100 OWNERS JUST AS THEY HAVE TACOMA AND TUNDRA OWNERS. I BACKED THE TRUCK OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY RECENTLY AND FOUND THAT THE BRAKES DIDN'T WORK AS I ROLLED OUT OF CONTROL DOWN A HILL. Positive 1997 Toyota T100 car reviews

  1. Gussie Schiller 2024-11-27

This truck has been a reliable companion, running smoothly even after 85k miles. While I have encountered some minor issues with the exhaust crossover pipe and the antilock brakes, they were quickly resolved. Although I personally prefer not to use antilock brakes, I must say that Toyota's system is quite good. Overall, I am confident in the quality and durability of Toyota vehicles, especially as the mileage increases.

  2. Nils Lindgren 2024-10-11

I bought my T100 in January 1997 with the intention of using it for commuting and light hauling, such as towing my 14ft. Alumnacraft boat. Throughout my 11 years of ownership, it has never let me down. I have only encountered two issues with the truck, both of which cost over $150 to repair. The first issue was related to the AC and was covered by the standard warranty. The second repair was due to wear and tear, as the valve cover gaskets needed to be replaced. The truck started leaking small amounts of oil. All other repairs have been minor or routine maintenance. I am selling the truck to a friend who needs a reliable and fuel-efficient vehicle. Best of luck finding one!

  3. Robert Flatley 2024-08-27

Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that you've successfully purchased a new item!

  4. Adolfo Dibbert 2024-08-07

Your truck came to me with 144,000 miles on it. It drives great on the highway, straight and true and smooth. It takes the bumps like a pickup, but then that's what it's called. I previously owned a '79 4WD Toyota, and this truck is like a Cadillac to me. It has a reasonable sized rear bed with an extra back seat for shopping and inside packages. The 4WD sits as tall as all its bigger brothers and sounds great! Even after my wife drove it into the end of the garage, with a new bumper and headlight, it looks the same as before. This is one tough truck!

  5. Rahul Gutmann 2024-07-19

What a great vehicle! Despite putting it through some serious abuse, including hauling heavy oilfield equipment and towing trailers, it has held up incredibly well. I've even taken it through mud with chains on all four wheels and it still runs like a dream. It's amazing that after all that, it hasn't burned a drop of oil. I've had to replace a few parts like the clutch, brakes, muffler, and timing belt, but overall it's been a wonderful vehicle. It's slightly smaller than a full-size pickup, but it matches up well with other trucks in deep mud. I've even found it to be better than the Tacoma. I loved it so much that I ended up buying a new Crew Cab Tundra in 2004!
