Toyota T100 problems

toyota logo

The Toyota T100 is a full-size pickup truck produced by Toyota between 1992 and 1998. It was developed strictly for the US (and Canadian) markets, where larger pickups have a sizable market share.

History

As Toyota firmly established itself in the North American compact pickup truck market in the 1980s through 1990s, the company offered a truck that was larger than the compact as an alternative to the traditional North American full-size pickup truck market. North American Toyota dealers had long been clamoring for a full-sized Toyota truck, especially in light of the high percentage of Toyota Pickup owners who moved on to domestic full-sized trucks. The T100 reflected a philosophy of designing products specifically for localized international markets, where traditional products sold and made in Japan wouldn't sell well. This approach is also demonstrated with the introduction of the mid-size Toyota Camry (XV10) which was larger than the compact Toyota Camry (V30) in 1991, and again in 1997 when the Toyota Sienna replaced the slow selling Toyota Previa.

Rumored for many years before, the 1993 Toyota T100 boasted a full-size (8 ft) pickup bed but retained the engine and suspension setup of its smaller and older sibling, the compact Toyota Truck. Although the T100 was a bit larger than the competitive mid-size Dodge Dakota, it was still markedly smaller than full-size American pickup trucks of the time. This meant that the T100 occupied its own niche in the truck market. Before introducing the T100, the company reflected on its history of commercial truck manufacture and products they offered in the past. Past products started with the Toyota G1, the Toyota FA, the Toyota BX, the Toyota Stout, the Toyota ToyoAce, and the Toyota Dyna, and its market successes with their Hino Division. Though economical, reliable, and practical, the T100 was slow to be accepted by traditional buyers of full-size competitors, while it was larger than both the Toyota Truck followed by the Toyota Tacoma compact trucks. Wary of the market pushback of competing directly with the Big Three, Toyota chose this somewhat smaller size (and limited lineup) so as not to risk blowback and import quotas. The T100 was designed and engineered for the North American market and was not sold in Japan.

Although sales were slow at the start, the T100 sales did reach into the mid 40,000 vehicles sold range (1996) in the United States. Sales of the Chevrolet C/K were roughly 700,000 per year, while sales of the Ford F-Series surged from 550,000 to nearly 850,000 and Dodge from 100,000 to 400,000 with the introduction of the new Dodge Ram in 1993. Sales of the T100 fell approximately 30 percent when the new Ram went on the market in October 1993, 11 months after the T100's launch in November 1992.

Common Toyota T100 problems

The Toyota T100 is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. One of the most frequent issues is related to the starter, with 29 owners reporting that their vehicles won't crank due to starter issues. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty starter motor, a weak battery, or corroded electrical connections.

Another common problem with the T100 is related to the automatic transmission. Some owners have reported that their transmissions may not shift correctly at high mileages. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, worn or damaged transmission components, or issues with the vehicle's computerized control system.

In addition to these issues, the T100's front brakes have also been reported as a problem area. Some owners have noted that the front brake pads wear quickly, possibly due to the vehicle's weight and towing capabilities. This can lead to reduced braking performance and increased stopping distances, which can be a safety concern.

Another issue with the T100 is related to the clutch bracket on 5-speed models. The factory clutch bracket is reported to be a weak piece of junk that can flex and cause the bracket and the firewall to crack. This issue can be identified by a popping sound when the clutch is depressed. A replacement part is available, but it can be expensive.

Finally, the T100's transmission service is also a concern. Some owners have reported that their transmissions have died or locked into gear at high mileages, requiring costly repairs. It is recommended that T100 owners service their transmissions regularly to prevent these issues.

In summary, the Toyota T100 has several common problems that owners should be aware of. These include issues with the starter, automatic transmission, front brakes, clutch bracket, and transmission service. By staying vigilant and addressing these issues promptly, T100 owners can help ensure that their vehicles remain safe and reliable over time.

Toyota T100

Why did the Toyota T100 fail?

Reception. Upon introduction, the T100 was criticized for being too small to appeal to buyers of full-size work trucks, the lack of an extended cab, and the lack of a V8 engine; with the only available engine was a 3.0 liter V6, which was already found in Toyota's compact trucks and in the 4Runner.

How reliable is the T100?

T100 has super reliablilty, gas mileage & comfort

Reliable, easy to do routine maintenance like oil and filter changes. We always get compliments on it. It is 350k miles and still going strong after nearly 24 years.

Why did Toyota stop making the T100?

In theory, a full-size pickup truck from Toyota in the early-1990s sounded like a recipe for success. However, in practice the T100 was a commercial failure, never selling more than 40,000 units in a single year when some Big Three competitors were selling upwards of 700,000.

Is the Toyota T100 a classic?

The Once-Unloved Toyota T100 Is Now a Cult Classic.

The business owner and repair person put it on the rack and after examination, informed me that it was not worth the repairs, because the frame and undercarriage was too extensive and might as such cause safety issues. I chose not to have it repaired because of this issue.

Thankfully there was no one else on the road and I wasn't going at a high speed. The airbag hit me in the face, knocking off my glasses and producing terrible smell and smoke. My left cheek is bruised. The horn went off continually until I was able to turn off the road into another driveway and turn off the engine. There was no warning, no impact, no braking until it exploded.

AM CONCERNED IF VEHICLE IS IN AN ACCIDENT, IT WILL DISINTEGRATE AND CAUSE BODILY INJURY OR DEATH TO DRIVER AND PASSENGER, OR IF STRUCTURE FAILS WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION IT CAN CAUSE HARM TO OTHER DRIVERS/PASSENGERS. TOYOTA LEFT THIS MODEL OUT OF THE RECALL BUT THESE ARE THE EXACT SAME ISSUES REPORTED WITH TACOMA AND TUNDRA OF SAME MODEL YEAR RANGE. TRUCK WOULD RUN FOREVER IF NOT FOR EXCESSIVE RUST. • VIN: JT4TN14DXT0
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: MY DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED WITHOUT ANY WARNING ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19,2019. I WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY ACCIDENT OR COLLISION. THE VEHICLE WAS ALREADY IN THE PARK POSITION AND THE MOTOR SHUTOFF. I WAS PULLING INTO MY DRIVEWAY WITH MY SON AND BEFOREI COULD REMOVE MY KEYS FROM THE IGNITION AND EXIT MY TRUCK, THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED, SMACKING ME DIRECTLY IN MY FACE. IM SURE THIS WAS DUE TO A MALFUNCTION OF SOME KIND BECAUSE IVE BEEN OWNING THIS VEHICLE SINCE 1996 AND THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED. NORMALLY IF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOY THE ENGINE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO START BUT IN THIS SITUATION MY MOTOR STILL TURNS ON BUT ITS UNSAFE TO EVEN DRIVE AROUND WITH THE DEPLOYED AIRBAG DANGLING FROM THE CENTER OF THE STEERING WHEEL HOW IT IS. I USE THIS CAR EVERYDAY FOR WORK BUT NOW IM IMMOBILE DUE TO THIS. LUCKILY I DIDNT SUFFER ANY BODILY INJURIES MORE THAN PUFFINESS ON THE LEFTSIDE OF MY FACE AND REDNESS FROM THE IMPACT. MY FACE DID SWELL UP A LITTLE AND MY LEFT EYE WAS PRETTY RED AND IRRITATED. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS BECAUSE ITS DEFINITELY NOT SAFE. I NEVER IMAGINED THAT TOYOTA WOULD BE DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE ESPECIALLY IF MY VEHICLE WASN'T PART OF THE RECALLS IN THE PAST YEARS.

THE HORN WILL NOT WORK AND OF COURSE I HAVE NO AIRBAG PROTECTION. THE VEHICLE HAD NEVER BEEN IN A WRECK AT THE TIME THAT THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND SAFELY STOP IN SPITE OF THE CAB BEING FILLED WITH THE SMOKE FROM THE AIRBAG. I SUFFERED BURNS ON MY CHEST AND LEFT ARM AND BRUISING ON MY LEFT HAND AND ARM.

  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN A DIVIDED HIGHWAY, THE DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED WITH NO WARNING. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE DRIVER HAD CUTS AND BRUISES (SEE PHOTOS). WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN MILLEDGEVILLE, GA. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO. HE SAID THAT THE "TRUCK WAS OLD AND PROBABLY JUST GOT HOT". HE OFFERED TO GIVE ME A RAZOR KNIFE TO CUT THE AIRBAG OFF OF THE STEERING WHEEL. I FIND THIS RESPONSE APPALLING IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT IT WAS APPARENTLY A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT AND NOT THE RESULT OF ANYTHING THAT WE HAD DONE.

  1. Vladimir Schumm 2024-06-24

    Vehicle year: 1995

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing Toyota truck that I bought back in 2001 from a really nice guy in Costa Mesa, Ca. Even though it had 80,000 miles on it, I knew it was a Toyota and that it would last me a long time. And boy, was I right! Seven years later, the truck now has 185,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. The only part that I had to replace was a starter, which is pretty impressive if you ask me. Plus, it even has an automatic transmission! I've been really happy with the truck's mileage too. My commute to work involves a combination of highway and city driving, and when I did the math, I was averaging 18 miles per gallon without even babying the truck. Thanks for letting me share my story!

  2. Reilly Konopelski 2024-05-21

    Vehicle year: 1996

I purchased this vehicle with 70000 miles in '99 and enjoyed every minute of ownership until the end. I religiously changed the oil and performed regular transmission and coolant services, as well as following the owner's manual. However, I experienced head gasket failure that led to cylinders 3 and 6 getting 'burnt' (as the mechanic put it) at 158000 miles. As a Toyota owner, I expected to get at least 200000 miles out of the product if I followed the recommended maintenance. I am disappointed in this outcome, but I still believe in the quality of Toyota products.

  1. Gussie Schiller 2024-11-27

    Vehicle year: 1997

This truck has been a reliable companion, running smoothly even after 85k miles. While I have encountered some minor issues with the exhaust crossover pipe and the antilock brakes, they were quickly resolved. Although I personally prefer not to use antilock brakes, I must say that Toyota's system is quite good. Overall, I am confident in the quality and durability of Toyota vehicles, especially as the mileage increases.

  2. Leonardo Satterfield 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 1995

In 1996, I bought my 1995 Toyota T-100 and it has been one of the best trucks I have ever owned. Every time I go to the Blue Ridge Mountains, she is right there beside me like a faithful dog. This 2WD truck is very capable on the trails and has never left me stranded, whether I am fording the North Fork of the Tye River or scrambling up 45-degree trails on the Crabtree Falls Fire Road. I also own a 2002 F-350 4x4 4 door, but I truly believe that my Toyota is a true competitor. Despite what some people may think, the T-100 is a highly capable truck.

  3. Kyle Harvey 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 1996

I bought this truck with 90,000 miles and now have 171,000. It's been a great companion for both farm work and commuting. It handles hills and highways with equal ease. It's been incredibly reliable (no surprises there) and has held up well despite some rough treatment. The bumper guards behind the plastic moulding below the bumper have been a lifesaver. All in all, this is one fantastic truck!

  4. Jarvis Hirthe 2024-11-22

    Vehicle year: 1998

    1. The truck is 207 inches long, which means it can easily fit in my garage or a parking ramp. 2. It has a 6-foot box and 4 feet between the fender wells. 3. It can even seat up to 6 people in a pinch. I have been the proud owner of this truck for 14 years, and if any manufacturer made a similar truck today, I would buy it without hesitation. I have no complaints whatsoever.

  5. Jerrell Yost 2024-11-20

    Vehicle year: 1993

I purchased this truck a year and a half ago from a company that regularly transported 1,000 lbs of nuts and bolts. Since then, I have driven it for 25k miles without any issues. The air conditioning has always been very cold, and the truck runs exceptionally well. I once drove it at 75 mph on the interstate while carrying 2,200 lbs of gravel. The 8' bed can accommodate 4x8 sheets of drywall between the wheel-wells, and the tailgate can be shut. In my experience, the T100 is the toughest truck I have ever driven. Despite repeatedly pushing it to its limits, it has never let me down. I am selling it now only because I found a great deal on a '98 T100 with low mileage.
